The margin of the OS on a PC is, really, not the biggest cost. Even today's ultra-cheap hardware still requires more dosh spent on keyboards, displays, cooling and power supplies than the typical smart phone.

But for a phone, a switch to Linux from Windows (or Symbian) could save a lot. Especially when you factor in the smaller footprint of Linux...

So no wonder Steve Ballmer was reduced to vague threats...
