questions about the adaboost training algorithm. I sincerely hope you could answer my questions.


1. For each haar-like feature, a lot of face and non-face samples are used
to train the weak classifier h(x,f,p,è). I wish to know how can I obtain a
suitable value of the threshouled è?

2. In your paper, you proposed "For each haar-like feature x, if pf(x)< pè, h
(x,f,p,è)= 1, else h = 0." Does pf(x) indicate the sum of all feature values
which were computed by x?

3. My advisor asked me to implement your paper to compare experimental
results with ours. Would you please provide me any implementation details or source code about this paper ?

I have downloaded your code and tried to implement it on my computer. However, the results were not expected. No red rectangles around the faces and even my color image became gray scale image. This is a request for collaboration for working on Viola and Jones' Adaboost algorithm.

Recently, Hamed Masnadi-Shirazi released his Matlab source as part of an assignment. I have taken the code and tidied it up a bit. But importantly, optimized to run 30 times faster. So to get the 10 best features, it now takes only about 1 hour using Matlab 6.1, on a 512 MB AMD 2.8+ Sempron processor under Win98. This was done mainly by replacing for-loops by their vectorized equivalents.

I've spent a lot of time trying to get very good results, but with memory restrictions and time catching up, I felt that I've taken the code as far as I can go. Specifically, I can only load in about a total of 1600 face or nonface examples only. Still I believe more can be done. I'd like some collaboration on this project.

Here's a list of amendments to the code in order of significance:
- optimized code in training features - removing for-loops in several places significantly speeded up things
- Created code for the simpleboxeszero.m function
- Tidied up code for generating features in violaboxeszero - seemed to give incorrect looking features
- Provided code for calculating thresholds. One is testclassifier.m
  I have created another function to create thresholds - based on Viola and Jone's IJCV 2004 paper.
- Changed values for results in face/nonface detection to be 0 and 1 (as per original paper) instead of -1 and 1.
- Clarified algorithm in DisplayFeature.m -
   seemed like a mysterious piece of code, using trilinear matrices to get a picture of a feature!
   Created a new function to overlay a feature over an image and show the feature value calculated.
 The image and the feature number are selectable through a slider bar.
- created a function to read in and generate a list of desired files for training.

Regarding the comment that the robot has trouble detecting faces, I think it depends a lot on training. If it was only trained for frontal faces, it would be rather succeptible to rotations. The scaling of the face also seems to be an issue and of course complex background can give plenty of false positives if they are not initially well accounted for.

The idea of using many different detectors (all with low false-negative rates) to progressively screen out non-faces until only faces are left seems to depend on the various detectors being independent of each other. Training late-stage detectors only on data that passed through the early stages seems reasonable, but how are the features used in each stage chosen in the first place? Can the order in which features are incorporated into the cascade's stages be optimized to produce independent stages?


Rajit: the use of rectangular features was purely for computational efficiency (section 2.2, page 6). Looking at the figure on page 4, the features can be seen as crude approximations to first-order (a,b) and second-order (c,d) derivative-of-gaussian or gabor filters. The "integral image" is a computational-efficency thing, calculating an intermediate term for each pixel, storing them, and combining them many times (for the various features and subwindows).

Louka, thanks for pointing out that difference. I think the MPI implementation used Gentle Boost. False positives were as much an issue as false negatives. It found dozens of faces in the background to every one time it found my face. This could, however, be purely an implementation problem, and not a flaw in the method itself. It's not terribly surprising though that bookshelves and kitchens would match to lots of rectangle combinations, so that's why I started thinking more about backgrounds and how they might cause unexpected problems....

Robin, thanks for the link to the Viola-Jones implementation. This came up before in the Chen and Yuille paper last week. AdaBoost is designed to minimize the overall classification error – not minimize the number of false negatives. In “Fast and Robust Classification using Asymmetric AdaBoost and a Detector Cascade” from NIPS 2002, Viola and Jones discuss a modification to AdaBoost to correct for this by making false negatives cost k times more than false positives in the weight update step in each round. I’m not sure whether this implementation uses Asymmetric AdaBoost or not, but that can definitely have an impact on the results.

The authors seems to give no intuition why they tried to use rectangular features on their integral image. I think, the rectangles with three regions are nullifying the advantage, if any, gained by integrating the picture intensity up to a point (x,y) in the image. As a result, I am not amazed by the poor quality observed by Robin regarding the method.

About a month and a half ago I downloaded a V-J implementation from http://sourceforge.net/projects/kolmogorov I set it up to use with a webcam on a home robot, but was disappointed in how it performed. It really likes to find faces in my bookcase, for example. But it only finds my face when I'm at just the right angle to the camera. (This was the case even without my glasses.)

This could be an implementation (rather than a method) problem. Still, it got me thinking about possible method issues. One is background representation. It's probably impossible to train any detector on all possible backgrounds. Further, a specific implementation will have its own characteristic set of backgrounds. For that reason, it's desirable to have a method that the end user can easily train, or at least tweak.

I had read this paper some time ago. I know some other applications have been deduced (tracking people, other Viola and Jones paper: Detecting pedestrians using patterns of motion and appearance) but I am just wondering if the method has been improved in speed by some other tricks (it's been 3 years now).
