A famous statue in Brussels. Fancy a beer when you get back and are reasonably settled?

Waterloo! Take a daytrip to where history turned. Some of the musket-pocked buildings are still standing.
Work off all that fine beer and chocholate by walking the field and imagining taking a volley every 30 secs or so.

Brussels is not a large town with a lot of 'highlights' to see; nevertheless, it is possible to enjoy a nice time while there.
In addition to the Atomium, you easily could spend the better part of a day strolling around the old part of Brussels around the big market place (Grand Place), which some claim to be the most beautiful in the world. There are many quaint streets in that neigbourhood, nice galleries, (covered streets), etc...
Enjoy "a Golden" (a very light aperitif) in the Chaloupe d'Or (The golden Boat) in the Grand Place. It is a nice, even romantic place to while away some free time. If you would like to sample a serious Belgian Beer, try a Duvel.
Apart from this, I would suggest boarding a train to Leuven (~15 minutes), which is a very young feeling university town with many old buildings, streets, etc. Similarly, Gent and Antwerp are ~30 minutes away, and Bruges is 45 minutes distant. The train service is very unlike that of England (and Scotland?), as they are reliable (and frequent).

I did Brussels in 6 hours once, on a day trip from Antwerp when my partner was living there, about 10 years ago so things have probably changed a bit. Atomium, Mannikinn Pis, Grand Place, Tintin musueum, Victor Horta museum (art nouveau central), and the iguanadons in the National Museum are what I remember, but I think that there were more attractions there too.
The trains, while cheap and frequent, are actually quite slow by UK intercity standards, though fast by West Riding ones. Unless they've finally put the TGV in. For an afternoon in Antwerp: check out the railway station bar, take a trip up the KB tower to see the place, and see if Extra Large is still open on Oude Beurs. If it is, buy a giant Zippo lighter.
Drink De Koninck <- sound general advice. Duvel, Kwark, Leffe and co are all very well, if you want to lose the ability to walk and/or talk about 2 hours sooner than you were expecting to.
