Peanut's Mommy  21
06-26-2007 12:30 PM ET (US)
Hi there. Just wanted to introduce myself and then ask a question. I'm a stay at home mom of a wonderful, active toddler. DH and I are white. My daughter, whom we adopted at birth, is biracial... black and white. We live in NM, and only 3% of our local population is black. I take DD to many community activities... story time at the library, swimming lessons, a play group with friends, etc., and the people we meet are diverse (Hispanic, Native American, etc.) but DD is usually the only black or biracial (with African American) person there. I really want her to have opportunities to be involved in the local African American community as she grows up. She's only a year and a half now, but I've begun to look online for opportunities for us to get out and meet people. I haven't had much luck. Does anyone know of public events in and around the Albuquerque, NM area which might celebrate her heritage and be an opportunity to get more involved in the local African American community? Especially family or kid friendly events where she would be welcome, now or in the next few years?
