I'm going from NJ to Myrtle Beach in a week, and I thought Id make a stop in the area to do a little mountain biking. Would someone be good enough to recommend a place to go if you only have time for one place? I'm somewhat a skilled rider but a little out of shape because I haven't gotten out enough this year. so, I'm looking to avoid long steep mountain climbs. wharrie looked pretty cool on trianglemtb.com. Any thoughts?

If you ride Keyauwee and Supertree, it's 11+ miles including the trip down Woodrun road to get there. You'll run into a number of uphills/downhills; one may be a mile long....but nothing like the NC Mountains to the west. It's in the Uwharrie National Forest....and is marked with royal blue blazes. www.childrey.com http://www.rideumba.com/woodrun.htmlTommy < replied-to message removed by QT >

Any concerns riding UMBA trails during deer hunting season?

During the gun season, it's safest to wear bright colors, travel in groups, and stay on the trails. Riding on Sundays is usually pretty safe, as no one is supposed to hunt on Sunday.
The trails are not closed because of hunting season.

I don't ride during gun season...except on Sunday's. Long ago, I rode about midday on Saturday. I would never ride just before dark.
My deer hunting friends who live near the Uwharrie advise me to never to go in the woods during gun season. They always hunt on private land from a stand. They say that there are many novice hunters in the Uwharries. Tommy

One must beware of what is known as BUCK FEVER. That typically is worst the first and last weeks of GUN SEASON.Nuff other places to ride that are less dangerous. 1. Charlotte Whitewater 2. Itusi ,kinda boring 3 Dark Mountain 4 Hobby Park 5 Fisher River Park Try Em GUY ---- QT - Tommy Taylor <qtopic+27-j5jTbnpufAwXT@quicktopic.com> wrote: < replied-to message removed by QT >

Weather report shows 50% chance of rain on Thursday. I want to ride Friday. Do the trails drain well? Does anyone manage trail closure? Thanks for any information.

No one manages trail closure. It drains quickly. If it rains Thursday, you're OK on Friday. Conditions are good. I rode on Sunday... Deer season is open; hunting is legal in the Uwharrie National Forest. Tommy

I rode the Wood Run trails today. Lots of fun. Question, though. I started the Supertree trail from the Wood Run Camp. After passing the power lines the 2nd time it turns into double track and after a little way there's a trail to the left. It doesn't appear marked, but it's definitely a trail as it was well ridden and had man-made bridges. This trail looped back to the Wood Run Camp without going back to the Wood Run Road as the map appears to take it. Am I reading the map wrong or is this a new trail that is not on the map? Also, there are a couple proposed trails on the map. Are they completed yet?

More than likely its the Dutchmans Creek hiking trail. Dutchmans something or another-- that I do remember.Given the glacial pace of new trail approval in the Uwharrie Forest it almost certainly cannot be a new biking trail. That said though, the trail does receive bicycle traffic. When confronted by anyone you can simply say I am sorry, I must be turned around back here or my fave. No entiendo, no habla Ingles. Speaking of the proposed trails. Is there anything us humble MTB can do to help speed up the process. It only takes a couple of primitive tools, and maybe a chainsaw. Just kidding....I am just impatient. Meanwhile I will continue to hang out up here at Owl's Roost, and hobby park.

Check with the UMBA guys or whatever they call it. There seems to be NO REAL concerted effort on the bikers part to expedite the trail process. The Forest Service is simply another government Agency that converts energy to solid waste, you cannot expect them to move fast with anything that holds little promise of a monetary return for them. However, check this months Dirt Rag issue #132. There is talk of a IMBA sponsored ride center in North Carolina to be built at Uwharrie. page 70 of Dirt Rag #132 Access section. In reading this I do not believe that this is accurate as there is no real dedicated and active MTB club, no real vibrant downtown and in my opinion not a current demand in that area.I will check out IMBA to read up on that. If in fact this is going on I more than likely believe that they have Uwharrie confused with the USNWC Whitewater Center in Charlotte aka Riverfront Park. Everything mentioned in the article is present in that area. My suggestion if you want some more mountain and woods riding go to Dark Mountain. Afterwards grab a bite to eat at the Chli Verde if you like Mexican. Later GUY ---- QT - Shawn <qtopic-27-j5jTbnpufAwXT@quicktopic.com> wrote: < replied-to message removed by QT >

It's a rideable fire road that we hope to add to the system one day. We'll have to have an archeological study before the Forest Service will consider adding it.

Just wondering what the trail conditions are like this time of year. Thinking of riding on Saturday. Any comments are helpful? Thanks.
