One must beware of what is known as BUCK FEVER. That typically is worst the first and last weeks of GUN SEASON.Nuff other places to ride that are less dangerous. 1. Charlotte Whitewater
2. Itusi ,kinda boring
3 Dark Mountain
4 Hobby Park
5 Fisher River Park
Try Em

I don't ride during gun season...except on Sunday's. Long ago, I rode about midday on Saturday. I would never ride just before dark.

My deer hunting friends who live near the Uwharrie advise me to never to go in the woods during gun season. They always hunt on private land from a stand. They say that there are many novice hunters in the Uwharries.

During the gun season, it's safest to wear bright colors, travel in groups, and stay on the trails. Riding on Sundays is usually pretty safe, as no one is supposed to hunt on Sunday.

The trails are not closed because of hunting season.

If you ride Keyauwee and Supertree, it's 11+ miles including the trip down Woodrun road to get there. You'll run into a number of uphills/downhills; one may be a mile long....but nothing like the NC Mountains to the west. It's in the Uwharrie National Forest....and is marked with royal blue blazes.

I'm going from NJ to Myrtle Beach in a week, and I thought I’d make a stop in the area to do a little mountain biking. Would someone be good enough to recommend a place to go if you only have time for one place? I'm somewhat a skilled rider but a little out of shape because I haven't gotten out enough this year. so, I'm looking to avoid long steep mountain climbs. wharrie looked pretty cool on trianglemtb.com. Any thoughts?

Pleas visit the site and let us know what you think as it is still a work in progress. Please check the site now and then as we have lots more to come. A photos section will be coming soon where you can purchase prints made in the Uwharrie Mountains lakes and trails. Skyrock is currently closed. It was flagged and had some work done on it 2 or 3 years ago, but is not rideable. We are waiting on an archaeological study to be done so that we can apply to the USDA Forest Service. Brian at Middle Ring Cyclery in Albemarle knows more.

Brian Bristol, Lynda Campbell, and myself completed a second workday out at the XTERRA course this past Sat, April 14. We cleaned Blackburn and Kaitlyn. Some log work is needed on the Short trail back to Greg. We had worked on the start of the loop a couple of weeks ago. The trail is in pretty good shape already. We haven't had a good opportunity to look at any drainage issues yet, most of our work has been concentrated on downfall and overgrowth. The trail is rideable in it's current form. If you would be interested in working on the trail or volunteering for the race on May 6th, please contact Middle Ring Cycles. We can point you in areas that you could work on by yourself, if you only have a little time to devote or can't make any of the trail work days.

Trails were in great shape on Saturday (Mar 31). I liked riding Keyauwee clockwise. Others might not agree with that but I enjoyed it. That first climb was a bear but doable however the long descent down the gravel road was awesome. The following singletrack climb wasn't so bad and the creek crossings were refreshing.

The Badin Lake Group campground was in great shape. Showers had hot water and the site was clean. The bathrooms could have been a bit less smelly but that's hard to achieve with just a hole in the ground for bio-waste.

We are also going to be in the Badin Lake area this weekend, at Arrowhead campground. It's a pretty nice campground. (never have stayed in Badin) Anyway, at the race we had at Wood Run this weekend, Brian Bristol the owner of Middle Ring Cycles talked to me about lots of trail opportunities that have recently opened up in that area (the ORV area and Badin Lake Area) I'm going to go over there this weekend to scope it out and ride it also. He is putting on an XTERRA race there May 6. Anyway, I will be e-mailing people about working these trails into riding shape. This area should have awesome potential. Get up with Brian or you can e-mail me back at this address for coming info... Have fun this weekend, maybe see ya on the trail!
