This discussion space is for posting trail conditions for UMBA's Wood Run Trails and for general UMBA news.

Get out and ride!!

As of September 22, Keyauwee is clear of fallen trees. The trail is dry and clear. The bed of the biggest creek on Keyauwee has changed and needs some work. Due to recent trail work, Keyauwee is ready to ride within 24 hours of a big rain. Supertree is in good condition. There are a few trees across the trail. Watch for logging trucks on Woodrun road. Deer bow season has begun. Walker Mountain Road and the power line right of way have been mowed.

After 8 inches of rain from Jeanne, on September 29, trail conditions are good. It is damp but OK. On fast downhill runs, the line has changed due to the runoff. Keyauwee has several low hanging trees near Moonshine Creek. Supertree still has about 5 downed trees, most are rideable.

Trail conditions are almost dry. Someone did some rock work on the big creek on Keyauwee. It's now rideable again. Nice Work!

Me and my riding buds from trianglemtb.com fixed the Keyauwee creek crossing on 10-10. The trails are in excellent shape everytime I ride Uhwarrie,You guys do a great job! Keep it up and happy trails.

Trail Care Day and Ride This Sunday, Nov. 7 from 1-4...

We will likely focus on Supertree. Here's a list of some things that we have to do...

 Keyauwee:

There is one tree across the trail near Moonshine creek...it can be ridden.
There are two low hanging trees next to Moonshine creek. The courdoroy near Moonshine creek still exists.
The big creek is fixed...by someone...not me. The uphill side could use a few buckets of small rocks.
The vistas need clearing
Foliage could be moved back in some places.
There are a number of places that could be drained.
We need to build a bench at the first vista.


Supertree:
There are about 4 logs across the trail. All can be ridden over or around by experienced riders.
There are two deep washouts...one is at the beginning of Supertree if you go counterclockwise. The other is just uphill from the far entrance to Keyauwee The washouts are "protected" by flags and or logs.
The far side of the creek is muddy and could use a lot of gravel.
Foliage could be moved back...not a big deal.

Bring your riding stuff of course, but maybe also some work gloves, hand pruners or loppers or a small folding saw if you have them. We won't be doing any heavy work that would require too much more than that. We'll have some shovels, picks, and a wheelbarrow in case we need them.

I visit your area a few times a year to visit family and just happend upon your trail system but the first few times I rode the trails they weren't well marked and traversing the whole loop was a little confusing for a flat lander like me but this past summer I found your handout for navigating the trails and can not believe how much it has changed in just a few years. Thank you all for your efforts to make this one of those diamonds in the rough that you can ride all day without ever incurring overcrowded conditions or rude riders I hope to be able to attend one of your future trail up-keep days so I can contribute to your fine trail system, KUDOS!! and keep up the good work fella's for us flatlanders need riders like you to maintain such great riding destinations such as yours in outta the way places with little other choices for out door rec. in montgomery county later JA

Trail conditions on Keyauwee and Supertree last Sunday were
excellent...we've had a couple of inches of rain since then, but the trails should be ready for Sunday, Dec 12.

I only ride on Sundays during deer hunting season from Nov. 6 to Jan. 1 as there is no hunting on Sundays.

During the last trail care day in November we rode Supertree and cleaned it up as needed. Supertree was a mudhole last year at this time. Now due to several trail care days it dries out as fast as Keyauwee.

Work Left To Do:

Keyauwee:

There are two low hanging trees next to Moonshine creek. We will cut them once they are on the ground.
Replace the cordoroy on Moonshine Creek with good drainage or armoring. The big creek is fixed...the uphill side needs to be graveled with baseball sized rocks.
Vistas need clearing to open of the views of Morrow Mountain, etc. Foliage could be moved back in some places.
There are a number of places that could be drained. We should probably go clockwise from the Hunt Camp and do some drainage work through Moonshine Creek.
We need to replace the logs on the gravel causeway with rock.
We need to build a bench at the first vista.


Supertree:
There are two deep washouts...one is at the beginning of Supertree if you go counterclockwise. The other is just uphill from the far entrance to Keyauwee.
The far side of the creek is muddy and could use a lot of gravel. We have enough gravel left over from the causeway project. We just don't have a way to get it to the creek about half a mile. Five to ten trips with a motorized wheelbarrow ($90 a day from the local rental center) would do the job.

Expansion:
We will work with the USDA Forest Service to expand the trail system in 2005 as possible.

We had two inches of rain last week and the creeks are full, but as of Saturday, January 15, trail conditions are good.

The next trail work/ride day is scheduled for Saturday, Feb 5th at 9 AM. We will mostly be limb trimming and removing tree debris, no earthwork this time. More info to be released soon.

It looks like there is going to be a controlled burn in the Supertree area. I noticed that a tracked vehicle had bulldozed in a counterclockwise direction down Supertree. I don't know how far down Supertree they went...probably to the power line. It looks like the dozer also made a fire "road" at about .8 of a mile down Woodrun Road towards the power line. They burned this same area 2 or 3 years ago.

The controlled burn has taken place on Woodrun road and Supertree. Supertree may be muddier than usual after a rain from the Hunt Camp to the creek because of USDA-FS bulldozer work. Trail conditions on the rest of Supertree and Keyauwee are good.

We need to do some drainage work on this section.

  I went and road the Super Tree trail, clockwise, and I must say I was very impressed. The only real amount of mud we encountered was near the end at the creek where the bulldozing occured. On a side note, I found a headlamp (One used for riding at night or for walking at night, not a car headlamp) on the Road leading to the Super Tree Trail start, if you lost one please email me at ntodd@carolina.rr.com with as description of the one you lost and I will return it to the rightful owner. Trail Care Day March 19: Matthew, Matthew, Michael, and Chris...all from Aberdeen worked to drain a number of spots on Keyauwee, cut back branches, and dug out roots. The two leaning trees near Moonshine creek have been fixed...Thanks to Marcus and Co. Keyauwee is ready for race day.

I'm new to the area, just moved here from PA and I'm anxious to get out and ride. I've been hiking and scouting trails. My best friend is flying down in May for a weekend and we'd like to ride Uwharrie, but it's too expensive to fly her bike down, too. :( Are there any bike shops around that rent bikes? Even demos? Thanks for any info you can give.

There aren't any bike shops in Stanly or Montgomery County...the closest counties to the trails.

Thanks guys. I already talked to the guys at De Oro and they said no one in town rents bikes. Maybe she can dismantle hers and UPS it down? Probably cheaper. Glad to hear the trails are in good shape. I'm jonesin' to ride. I haven't ridden since last August before we moved. My bike just sits in the garage calling out to me.

Going to the Concord area and plan on doing some riding. We are going to Beech Mtn. Bike park and Renassaince Park. I understand Catawba River Trail is closed due to CWWP construction. Any other trails worth riding?

Yes, you can ride in the Uwharries, no permit needed..no special gear...trail conditions are good. Maps are available at www.rideumba.com and at the trailhead. The trails are blazed with blue blazes. There is an information board at the parking lot.

Here's a list of "nearby" bike shops...Right Gear in Kannapolis is probably the closest. I believe that Southpark Cycles rents Mountain Bikes.

      FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ)

      Q: Are the trails clearly marked?

      A: Yes. Keyauwee and Supertree are marked with blue blazes. The blue blazes are 2X6 inches rectangles. These confidence markers are found at trail, road, or power line right-of-way intersections. A double blaze means be alert, intersection ahead. Otherwise follow the beaten path. Let us know if additional blazes are needed.



      Q: Where do the mountain bike trails start? Do they leave from the parking lot?

      A: No, the trailheads of Supertree and Keyauwee are located 1.5 miles down Woodrun Road, the gravel road to the Woodrun Hunt Camp. You know you've reached Woodrun Camp if you come to a large clearing with a permanent port-a-john. Keyauwee starts on the left side of the hunt camp it stays to the left of Woodrun Road and comes back to Woodrun road. Supertree starts on the right side of the hunt camp near the gate and runs on the right side of Woodrun road. Supertree ends a 1.5 miles down Woodrun Road.just across the intersection from the "end" of Keyauwee. Supertree and Keyauwee are marked with blue blazes.



      Q: I'm confused; explain where the Keyauwee and Supertree trailheads are located again.

      A: Woodrun road is the key as it runs down the middle of the mountain bike trails. Keyauwee and Supertree both start 1.5 miles down Woodrun Road at the Woodrun Camp. Keyauwee stays to the left of Woodrun; Supertree stays to the right. Both trails meet again a mile or two further down Woodrun road. Since together, both trails are just one big circle, many riders ride both, as one big loop. If you park at the main parking lot, ride down Woodrun Road and ride both trails as one loop, the distance is just over 11 miles.



      Q: The signs at the Woodrun Hunt Camp confuse me. There is a wooden sign on the left side of the clearing that points down a trail. The sign says, "UWHARRIE TRAIL." What does that mean?

      A: The sign is at the beginning of the Keyauwee Mountain Bike Trail. It means that the Uwharrie (walking only) Trail intersection is located about ¼ of a mile down Keyauwee. If you're following blue blazes, you are on Keyauwee or Supertree. The Uwharrie hiking-only trail uses white blazes. Dutchman's Creek hiking-only trail uses yellow blazes.



      Q: A sign on the right side of the clearing confuses me; it has the UMBA symbol and points to the left. Does that mean that mountain bikers should always go left down Woodrun road?

      A: No, go either direction. The sign is confusing, and we plan to fix it. The Supertree Mountain Bike Loop starts here. You can either go down the trail to the right or left down Woodrun Road.either way you are on the Supertree Loop.



      Q: How long does it take to ride from the parking lot, go counter-clockwise on Supertree and come back to the main parking lot on Woodrun Road?

      A: It may take 45 minutes to an hour depending on your condition. Advanced riders do it much faster. Supertree is a more forgiving trail, but you will do some climbing.



      Q: How long does it take to ride from the parking lot and go clockwise on Keyauwee and return down Woodrun Road?

      A: It will take at least an hour for novice riders. Keyauwee has more elevation change and steeper climbs than Supertree. There are some climbs over a mile long. Keyauwee has more technical sections, but it is permissible to push your bike past the tough spots. Don't be embarrassed as only advanced riders ride Keyauwee without hike-a-bike.



      Q: How long does it take to leave the parking lot, travel clockwise on Keyauwee, then Supertree, and return t the parking lot?

      A: Many riders plan on at least 90 minutes, although advance riders will ride it much faster. If you are out of shape or a novice, allow for more time.



      Q: Which direction can we ride? A: Either direction



      Q: When is hunting season?

      A: Deer-gun season has begun by Mid-November and ends usually by Jan. 2. Bow season starts before that. There is also a turkey season and a squirrel season. There is no hunting on Sunday or after dark. During deer-gun season, I only ride on Sundays.



      Q: Can I ride on the Uwharrie Trail or Dutchman's Creek Trail?
      A: No these are walker-only trails as designated by the USDA Forest Service. Keyauwee crosses the Uwharrie Trail twice. Supertree crosses Dutchman's Creek Trail twice.



      Q: What are the International Mountain Bike Association's (IMBA) Rules of the Road? http://www.imba.com/

Hey, here's the scoop on Uwharrie. Years ago they had scores of trails for bikers, now the only stretch they have (specifically) for bikers is about thirteen miles of good singletrack. You may however, ride on all of the jeep and ATV trails you desire. I cannot comment on the length or condition of them. As for maps, I would look online. I really don't know where else to tell you. As for shops, I would access a phonebook for that area online as well. I'm at Ft. Bragg and couldn't tell you what shops, if any, they have up there. On the other hand, you may want to consider hitting the trails around Greensboro area. I don't know them personally, but have talked to two experienced riders who spoke highly of them. Additionally, there are great reviews and links for those trails (including lots of photos) , on mtbr.com That's where I went looking for my information about the Greensboro trails, aside from meeting those two riders I mentioned. I am originally from WNC, and if you can tell me exactly where you'll be staying the weekend, I may be able to make some other, more specific recommendations about trails. Trail conditions are good. There is one large tree across the trail on Walker Mountain Road. It can be ridden over by advanced riders; It's in plain sight. Wondering if anyone had rode the trails in the past week or so and could give a report? Last time I went, probably in June, they were a little grown up.. Not complaining though!! That grass and those tree limbs grow quick!! I'm about 30 miles away so don't want to go that far and be dissapointed.

The briars are trimmed back as are the face slapping branches...fallen trees have been cut off the trail. On several fire road sections, weeds are moving in towards the center. This is normal for August/September. Frost will knock them down. I ignore the weeds but not the briars. Trail conditions are good.

I generally only ride on Sunday from Nov. 5 to Jan 2. Instead, I ride on the PAVED roads at Morrow Mountain State Park...just across the river. If you park at the gate, ride to the top of Morrow Mountain, then through all of the campgrounds, and to the Kron House, then to the Pee Dee River, you get about 11 miles with lot of hills...300 feet elevation at the river to 900 feet at the top. Auto traffic is usually light and slow; you'll usually see more deer than cars.

I met you at Uwharrie a couple of months ago. Has any progress been made in opening new trails? I recall you saying that the Skyrock trail was nearing completion. I know one of the geologists who was digging on it and he supposedly is finished with the field work. How about the other loops?

In the last several months, we haven't had any formal workdays so there has been no progress. Our next step is to consult with the USDA National Forest Service ranger in Troy. We are waiting on an archaeological study before we go back to Skyrock. Skyrock was flagged and raked several years ago but no work since then. It would take a lot of hours to make it a good ride. 9:00 AM - We will meet at the Uwharrie National Forest Parking Lot 1.5 miles east of the bridge over Lake Tillery/Pee Dee River on 24/27. The parking lot is located 11 miles east of Albemarle and 9 miles west of Troy on 24/27.

Bring your bike, water, lunch, gloves. We plan to ride bikes to the work area, and do a ride afterwards.

Uwharrie National Forest Management Plan Revision is Underway...Meeting Oct. 11...my notes...NEXT MEETING OCT. 24. If you can't come, you may want to email or mail your wishes to the forest service...see below.

The purpose of the meeting was to tell the forest service what "desired conditions" we want in the next ten year plan. There were several hundred suggestions. The attendees then used a score sheet to rate or make notes on each suggestion. I submitted: "Increase the amount of mountain bike trails in the UNF." This process will go on through December. It will take another year to finalize the plan. The Oct. 24 meeting will be about DESIRED CONDITIONS...PART II. I think that our job is to narrow down or pin point the objectives.

Question: Is it safe to ride the trails during hunting season?

We usually recommend that riders stick to Sunday's, when there isn't supposed to be any hunting. It's a good idea to wear some blaze orange, and to ride in groups if possible, any time during hunting season. If you do end up riding on other days, try to avoid being out on the trails at dawn and dusk when visibility isn't so great.

There haven't been any hunter/rider incidents that I'm aware of. It's usually just the hunters shooting each other or themselves by accident.

The Trail Care Day previously scheduled for 11/13/05 has been rescheduled for 11/20/05. There will also be another Trail Care Day on 12/4/05. Visit www.ride.umba for more details.

Before the wet season returns, we'll try to take care of a few spots where drainage is becoming an issue. We'll also get a chance to ride the trails in the process. Come out and help us show support for mountain biking in the Uwharries!

Although we had a small turnout on 11/20, UMBA managed to make some significant progress towards improving drainage on Keyauwee. We installed a half dozen or so turnouts along the trail descending from the north end of Dennis Mtn down to Moonshine Creek. It was just in time too! I'm sure today's rain put our work to the test!!

If you can, make plans to come out on 12/4 for some final year end maintenance efforts and great riding.

How are the trails currently? I will driving through there the 30th and then again on the 2nd. Are dogs allowed? Thanks!

If dry enough, the trails are in good condition. I couldn't find info about dogs on the Uwharrie NF website. Keyauwee is drier than Supertree. There is no hunting on Sundays and the last day of deer season is Jan. 2, 2006.

Trail Conditions on Keyauwee and Supertree are excellent. The Walker Mountain Road section has been mowed, I guess as a fire break. They moved the big downed tree off of the road bed. There are some wet spots, but trail work in recent years has reduced the number. Drainage work done in Nov./Dec. has made a positive difference! Deer hunting season is over...let the games begin!

Big game hunting season ended Jan 2. There may still be some small game (squirrel, etc) hunters out there, but it's hard to mistake a cyclist for a squirrel, so I'd say we're pretty safe.

That would make 7 total trails to create a network of routes from. Can you say Epic! However we need your help so we can turn the routes and plans over to the USFS for public approval.

Deborah Walker is the USFS Ranger and is extremely helpful with keeping our interests in order. The ball is in our court now.

Allan, Skyrock is not open...none of the other proposed trails are open...we are working with the USDAFS on these proposed trails. Keyauwee and Supertree are in good condition. Someone has done some nice rock work on the big log and on the bottom of the big creek...on Keyawuee.

Note: Although you cannot ride on Skyrock or the hiker trails, you can ride on any of the fire roads in the area.

Hello everyone, I am new to the area. However, I have been riding on the trails for awhile. These trails are great. I am looking to get involved in helping to maintain the trail system.

I am looking to head to this area for the first time shortly. I am wondering if there is camping of any kind allowed in this area so I will not have to do a lot of driving in and out. I want to do a weekend outing this fall. Any suggestions would be welcome.

You can camp in the Woodrun area. Check the top link or call the Uwharrie National Forest HQ for more information. There are no facilities there...except for an outhouse. Sometimes the gate is locked but once again, contact the UNF. Deer season begins in Mid November...then I only ride on Sundays...no hunting. The UNF has camping with facilities 10 miles north of the Woodrun area.

Simple question: When does hunting season end??? I want to ride Uwharrie on a Saturday, but not while the bullets are flying. I have a WRC hunting schedule, but it's confusing me because there are different dates for different counties and different animals and different guns (or bows and arrows). Sheesh. Can someone tell me when it will be relatively "safe" to ride on a Saturday? Thanks!

Uwharrie National Forest Proposed Land Management Plan Available for Public Review and Comment
The Uwharrie National Forest Proposed Land Management Plan is now available for public review and comment. The Proposed Plan is the result of a collaborative effort among the USDA Forest Service, numerous members of the public, and other local, state, and federal agencies.
“I’m proud of this plan as much for what it represents as a community effort as for what it represents as a change in direction for forest management,” states Marisue Hilliard, Forest Supervisor for the National Forests in North Carolina. “The public has worked with us to build this Plan every step along the way.”
This Proposed Plan focuses around three main themes:
1.
Restoring the forest to a more natural ecological condition: For example, reducing the amount of loblolly pine plantations in favor of reestablishing longleaf pine forests or oak-hickory forests.
2.
Better managing heritage resources: The historic and prehistoric sites and artifacts found on the Uwharrie would be protected, but we would also use them to provide opportunities for research, teaching, and interpretation.

Providing outstanding and environmentally friendly outdoor recreation opportunities, with excellent trails and facilities: Our focus for this program would be on improving the conditions of the horse and off-highway vehicle trails in the Badin Lake area and working to complete the Uwharrie National Recreation Trail.
Another big change called for in the Proposed Plan is the designation of 32 Special Areas on the Uwharrie National Forest, comprising a total of 5,391 acres, including areas with unique or rare botanical, zoological, geological, historical and archeological, scenic and/or recreational values. They also include the best examples of more commonly encountered ecological systems, such as intact oak/hickory forests.
People may submit comments on the Proposed Plan for a 90 day period starting February 15th. The Proposed Plan, along with several related documents, is available electronically at:

This plan sounds great for the entire area. I hope this means know more logging in the area. They are really stripping away the area, and some places look aweful.

I am looking forward to the expansion of the MTB trails. Does any one know when a planned trail maintenance day will be??

I believe this plan also calls for a small user fee of 2.00 per person for use of the Wood Run Trail system like the one currently in use in Tsali. One must remember that the logging activities in place on public lands/ forests are nothing more than a subsdized welfare program for the less fortunate of the local populations. It is not driven directly by market demand or direction. Toursist driven economics are a lot harder to try to employ or involve SOME of the less educated or motivated of the local populations. As such it will be difficult to overcome the MORE TRADITIONAL USES philosophies ie Logging, Hunting etc. It is an ingrained mindset that will be difficult to overcome.

When did they put a trash receptacle in the Wood Run Parking Lot?? I cleaned up the mess left by a whole bunch of inconsiderate people but could not take the bag due to the stench. Sorry, I was not driving back to Winston with that in the back. Why put a Trash can if no one is going to empty it?? Typical Forest Service thinking..

Your bag was still intact...good job. I think there was some kind of event in the parking lot...I saw a port a john not long ago...They pick up every several weeks....and that usually takes care of it, but an event will overload.

There are a number of spots on the trails where the water runs down the trail instead of across it; these places need the lower sides trimmed so that water can "sheet" across. Riding conditions are excellent.

I try my best to be a good trail steward. Yeah, there were the usual suspects as far as soft spots on the trail(s). Overall though, I think thats the best I have ever ever seen the trail as far as upkeep and maintenance. Good job to whoever, they did whatever needed to be done but did not go so far as to sanitize the trail of its technical
features as has happened at Hobby Park in Winston and Tanglewood and Owls Roost in G-Boro.
I hope to make it out to ride down your way again soon.

I don't have any recent pics but I just rode Keyauwee, part of Supertree, and a fire road...conditions were excellent.

If you're asking what trail maintenance is needed.
There has been a lot of erosion of the fire road sections, but it doesn't interfere with riding. There are some wet spots that need draining. The biggest creek on Keyauwee needs some rock work...but it's very rideable.
Where are those creek rock experts from Charlotte, Greensboro, or Winston?...they did a great job about 2 years ago on the creek bed. Lately a high volume of water caused a little erosion.

I was there Sunday and the conditions were great. I hope Sandhills gets enough Porta Johns @ the trailhead Sunday. I do not want to do the bear in the woods thing again. Way to go Sandhills!!. First creek crossing was a little deep but it just kinda adds to the fun. Where is this so called Whitetail trail?? Heard of some people riding it but do not know where.

We are also going to be in the Badin Lake area this weekend, at Arrowhead campground. It's a pretty nice campground. (never have stayed in Badin) Anyway, at the race we had at Wood Run this weekend, Brian Bristol the owner of Middle Ring Cycles talked to me about lots of trail opportunities that have recently opened up in that area (the ORV area and Badin Lake Area) I'm going to go over there this weekend to scope it out and ride it also. He is putting on an XTERRA race there May 6. Anyway, I will be e-mailing people about working these trails into riding shape. This area should have awesome potential. Trails were in great shape on Saturday (Mar 31). I liked riding Keyauwee clockwise. Others might not agree with that but I enjoyed it. That first climb was a bear but doable however the long descent down the gravel road was awesome. The following singletrack climb wasn't so bad and the creek crossings were refreshing.

The Badin Lake Group campground was in great shape. Showers had hot water and the site was clean. The bathrooms could have been a bit less smelly but that's hard to achieve with just a hole in the ground for bio-waste.

Brian Bristol, Lynda Campbell, and myself completed a second workday out at the XTERRA course this past Sat, April 14. We cleaned Blackburn and Kaitlyn. Some log work is needed on the Short trail back to Greg. We had worked on the start of the loop a couple of weeks ago. The trail is in pretty good shape already. We haven't had a good opportunity to look at any drainage issues yet, most of our work has been concentrated on downfall and overgrowth. The trail is rideable in it's current form. If you would be interested in working on the trail or volunteering for the race on May 6th, please contact Middle Ring Cycles. We can point you in areas that you could work on by yourself, if you only have a little time to devote or can't make any of the trail work days.

I'm going from NJ to Myrtle Beach in a week, and I thought I’d make a stop in the area to do a little mountain biking. Would someone be good enough to recommend a place to go if you only have time for one place? I'm somewhat a skilled rider but a little out of shape because I haven't gotten out enough this year. so, I'm looking to avoid long steep mountain climbs. wharrie looked pretty cool on trianglemtb.com. Any thoughts?
