Love the Ithaca dog Park. Am trying to do some research on opening a Dog Park in Watkins Glen. Any help or suggestions would be great.

"Our politicians don't want to hear from us. We don't vote as a block, much less contribute to political campaigns. Unlike other interest groups, such as gun-owners, we've let our lawmakers and neighbors ride roughshod over us, with hardly a squeak of protest."

this is not true. the TCDOG folks have driven people away from the park area of and around the Festival Lands by bullying, harassment, refusal to follow simple agreed-upon rules, and the uncontrolled behavior of their dogs. it is not a single "woman ... who started an 'unofficial' and unlicensed dog walking service." they are either unwilling to clip a leash on their dogs for 30 seconds to take it for a drink or not clever enough to think of that as a solution to water access. their goal is dominance of the park, obvious from the fact that they will not accept a fence around just the Festival Lands. their proposals are irrational, incoherent, and targeted only at their own desires.

I have no idea about Binghamton. It is a man from Vestal, that is causing problems for those of us in Ithaca. I am working in my neighborhood in Ithaca. Good luck. Every community should have a dog park. M

Hello,
I am currently living in the Binghamton, NY area. I was wondering if anyone has heard anything about a dog park being built in Binghamton. If there are no current projects in process I would be interested in starting up a local effort. If anyone as any information please contact me at adinfito@hotmail.com.

The dog park at Cass Park was pretty good when it was being respected. There was a woman, Briton, who started an "unofficial" and unlicensed dog walking service and brought her dogs there frequently.

While she provided a great service at low rates (little overhead, training, or certification) to dog lover folks she got in over her head and took too many dogs at once and had unruly dogs (and even mean) that should not have been off leashes.

She got into trouble with tickets from actions she presented with her dog activities at that park and then it became big news in Ithaca. Before that, there wasn't much of an issue. This was the turning point where people playing soccer there and other dogs were threatened by dogs in her care and she got in trouble with the park police.

I have seen great parks in Varna for dogs to run which is only a 10 minute drive. I don't know how much has changed over the years but it is across from the Laundromat just before the train trestle on the left as heading away from Cornell on 366. Watch for speeding traffic while crossing (there was a gravel driveway to get down close to the water but it sometimes gets pretty muddy as far as driving goes).

Doesn't Cornell have some old lot somewhere they're not using, or piece of farmland, or industry that could be used?

I have numerously encountered dog poop in my yard, loose pit bulls (one who was biting a 12-year old's dog in front of my house), and have some concerns about my family's safety, rollerblading, and bicycling because of a couple of irresponsible owners.

My 2 cents

If we can't swim or use Stewart park in that fashion, our dogs should be allowed!!!

I have a question ? Wouldn't it be easier to get City Council to pass a local law allowing dogs to run off leash at Stewart Park ? You have great access to water. What happens now if you are caught walking your dog off leash at Stewart Park ? How severe are fines ?

Hi. Great site. I got a ticket at the dog park on Monday, 2/7 for my lab being off leash. Does anyone know why Atty. Arthur Samadovitz is taking such a stand against our animals. I have his home and work addresses, as well as his email. I am thinking about sending him a letter. I would really like to be able to understand his position. If not, this summer, every weekend, we can all stand, with our dogs on leash, and stare at him as he gets on and off his boat.

All,
I work with Akita Rescue of Western NY, and we *really* need help. Due to a bizarre crime (see our website: http://www.akitarescuewny.com/indexx.htm), we're handling 30 rescue dogs. This is 1/3rd of the total number of dogs we placed last year!

If folks can donate supplies or funds, any/all help will be greatly appreciated. Info on how to donate is posted on the website (it's also tax deductible, since we're not for profit).

Another way to help indirectly is by donating good used books, CD's, videos &/or DVD's -- I've been selling this on Amazon to raise funds for Akita Rescue, as well as the Schuyler Co. Humane society & Shultz's shelter in Waterloo.
If you have items to donate, please contact me at almanndc@hotmail.com
thanks, Nancy

Mariko,

The SPCA is having an informational meeting in January to discuss their upcoming plans to create a fenced, off-leash dog park on the grounds of the new shelter. It's so good to hear that Lilac has a good home with loving parents. She was such a sweetheart! I'll be sure to post here when there is a firmer date about the new park...

Congrats on the new member of your family!

Hi! I just got an adorable puppy (8 months) from the SPCA –you may have seen her – they called her “Lilac” but we’ve named her Bella. We’re wondering where people in Ithaca go to let their dogs socialize. We live near the Recreational Trails on South Hill but we rarely meet other dogs and owners willing to let the dogs meet and play. When we do it’s a real treat – shes full of energy and she loves to play. Are there any gathering times or places or non-official dog parks in the area?

Wow! What a great site. We have brought our Minchy to park a few times, and it is already STUNNING what a difference off-leash socializing has made on his everyday behavior. All local dog owners should take part in this movement to provide a permanent, safe, leash-free place for our four-legged family members. How is the site related to the group that sometimes posts meetings at the park?

I can't do the party for Sept 18, so I think it will be postponed. My mother fell and broke her hip so I am now consumed by this emergency...Also, don't know when I will be back in the groove...
