As a youth I loved playing Dodgeball. I first played at Stemmons Elementary School in Dallas, then at Tyler Street Christian Academy (also in Dallas). As an adult, I was fortunate to play on my Marine Corps unit's "Warball" team, the military version of Dodgeball. Now, the new Dodgeball movie starring Ben Stiller has me yearning to play Dodgeball again. After watching the movie I thought I could just come home and search "Dallas Dodgeball" at Google and find a league. No such luck. So, I have posted this Web page in the hopes that I can find other people interested in playing Dodgeball in the Dallas area for recreational purposes. If you are in the Dallas Fort Worth area and have a similar interest please contact me. My thoughts are that if enough people are interested (ages 16 and up) that we could get together about once a month at a Dallas location to play Dodgeball. Contact me - Tom Wakefield - at postalmag@comcast.net. Please use "Dallas Dodgeball" for the e-mail subject heading. Go to http://www.dallasdodgeball.com for more information. (This page is also at http://www.militaryspot.com/dallas-dodgeball.htm

Progress report: People are already contacting me about the Dodgeball games. Just to let everyone know, there are already 6 man team dodgeball games in Addison at Duke's Restaurant every Wednesday night (I believe). However, I would still like to organize separate Dodgeball games. Does anyone have any ideas on where to play? We need a gymnasium (for free), preferably with multiple courts.

Duke's is 21 and older. But yes they have them every wednesday at 7. If a gym isn't available, we could use like a tennis court maybe or something. Or an outdoor hockey court.

Ideas?

Well in Mesquite there are some out door hockey rinks that have been created that could be used.
There is one by a elementary school that would be perfect. They took out the hockey goals and the lights are button pushed till 10 or 11 PM.

I don't know if the City of Mesquite would like you using the place for dodgeball but it would be perfect for a small rec league when not raining.

I guess the desire to play Dodgeball was short lived due to the fact that I have not heard back from anyone. What the movie "Dodgeball" has now been out only three weeks and everyone has forgotten about playing dodgeball. I came to the message boards and over two weeks ago and saw a good start, but no one willing or able to put thing together. This is a pathetic as the nerdy team from Dodgeball. Let me hear back from you and let me know what is going on at themoviecritic79@yahoo.com

I live up in Addison, and have been contemplating talking to the Athletic club about leasing their basketball court one night a week. They do this for a volleyball league, so there might be potential there. If anyone is interested in ACTUALLY PLAYING....post some replies to this.

I'm definitely interested in playing - schoolteacher on summer break right now, so I have some time to potentially help on the organizational side of things too if someone needs unskilled labor.

Has anyone thought of going to the Wednesday night thing at the restaurant and doing a bit of recruiting?

Also - why once a month? I play Ultimate Frisbee once a week.... ;)

I may try to make it out to Duke's this week to do some "market-dipping" and see what I can find out. If I find out that there are enough people interested, I will pursue the Athletic Club thing further. Duke's is kinda like breeding ground for the yuppie "ex-jocks" I used to pound in elementary and junior high at dodgeball, so it might be kinda fun! I will let ya'll know.

Later,

Does it have to be a *gym* per se, or could we find a creative approach like they do at Duke's? Surely we can find a way around that.

Just wanted to drop in and say I went to Duke's last night.

There were - count them - FORTY teams signed up. Do the math on the bodycount. ;) Some people were on multiple teams, but it was still well in excess of 150 players. The question then is NOT "are there enough interested players in Dallas." The question is - do we have what it takes to interest them?

I think if Dallas Dodgeball is serious about getting things going, it would be very prudent to print up 200 or so fliers, and drop by Duke's for a few weeks trying to spread the word. We might even talk to Duke's about using their court on other nights. Business was booming for them to be sure.

The potential is definitely out there for a d-ball league in Dallas; all that is required is for someone to lead the way.

Everyone got to play more than once, in fact - really not sure that setting this up at exactly the same time as Duke's Wednesday night tourney is a sharp idea. :/

lol, Medieval Teacher. Last count I heard is that we had 15 people and we will probably have more. Hey Medieval let me explain something to you if too many people come then we won't get to play for long and if the count stays about the same that it is now there should be just enough people. Tom was nice enough to pay with his own money to rent the gym and all you can say is "really not sure that setting this up at exactly the same time as Duke's Wednesday night tourney is a sharp idea. :/. This is a good time to set it up. Medieval then go to Duke's you big baby

WTF is with your attitude? I make a suggestion and you go off lobbing insults? If I do go to Duke's - which I was considering not doing to try and support the formation of a real, permament Dodgeball league in this town, it will be because of your incredibly poor attitude.

Tom was nice enough to rent the gym and all you could say was that I don't think it was a sharp idea. How about thank you. You are probably the same type of kid that on your birthday and when you got all your presents and all you could say was is that all I got, instead of saying thank you.

I already mentioned I will be there on Weds. Tom, now that you have 6 dodgeballs do we need to bring more? I was going to go out and buy 1 today or tomorrow. If you have all we need then I wont worry about it.
Hey guys. Let's just chill. Let's just play and beat the hell out of your opponents on Weds.
Hey Tom.... People play this game with all different types of rules. Is there going to be any special rules for Weds? Are head shots allowed and are we playing the same rules that were in the movie?

Thanks for passing out the fliers. Those should bring more people in to play. Yes we do need more dodgeballs. We need as many as we can get. That way we can just keep throwing them at eachother. Of course headshots are allowed. Unless you are a woose and dont want to be hit in the head. Ill be there wednesday. Just watch for the best one out there playing and you'll know its me.

Hey Jon.... I wasn't complaining about head shots. Actually I was making sure we can hit people in the head.
I have seen some rules that states a head shot will cost the person who threw the ball.

UPDATE: You will need to purchase a Participation Card from the City of Mesquite to play in this game (on the 14th). Participation Cards are $5 for Mesquite residents and $10 for non-Mesquite residents. Under 18 may need a parent/guardian signature. These cards are valid for one year and are necessary to the City of Mesquite for legal/insurance reasons. You can purchase the card at the Dunford Community Center. I apologize for the late word on this fee. Originally, I had been told that I (the renter of the gym) needed a card only, but a guy from the Parks Department called me today and said everyone must have a card. I am a little perturbed at this late word, especially because I am hoping this doesn't affect anyone's decision/ability to show up. Nevertheless, the card is a good deal. If we play 12 times during the next year, that's only 50 cents a game night for Mesquite residents, plus you have access to Dunford for all other activities during the year as well. Also, this is a nice, enclosed air conditioned gym. Some of these leagues that are starting up in the Dallas area (at clubs) will be charging a lot more for registration to play outdoors on parking lots enclosed by temporary chain linked fences. Again, I apologize for this late word (I won't be asking for $1-$2 donations to cover the rental). Hope to see everyone there. Bring as many friends (targets) as you like. Also, we do not need any more balls. I have purchased some, but the Dunford center has about 10 dodgeballs already! More info at http://www.dallasdodgeball.com

Initially, the person that told me that nobody needed a card but me (as the renter of the court) is probably hired help or a volunteer. After I received the contract in the mail with the differing information I contacted the Parks Department and they got back with me with the correct information. It's partly my fault for not being more thorough. Anyway, the people I have talked with so far are still coming. So the game is still on. Bring a friend, too! See you Wednesday

I had fun last night as well.

Next time we should put teams together and have a tournament or something. Playing 15 on 15 is fun but I think it would be much more fun if we cut down on the playing size and have teams play against other teams.

I am glad to see that more people are making posts and I hope I continue to see it. I know our last dodgeball game was probably your first game in a long time and we were playing for fun. I think we should add some rules in order to improve our game and make it more exciting. I think there should be a 5 or 10 second limit as to how long you can hold the ball. This will make the game quicker paced. I also want to do this due to the fact that last time we played I heard comments that it was getting boring when there was no one throwing and we were just waiting for each other to throw. I believe this will eliminate that and you will find that many leagues use this rule. As far as the boundaries go. I think everyone did a good job of following all the boundaries except for the sideline boundaries. Please remember as in the middle line on the court that you are not suppose to step across the sideline boundaries or you are out. We may have a rule where players may leave the boundaries only to retrieve stray balls or may have it where your teamates who have been eliminated can only retrieve the balls on their side. This way even though they are out of the game they can still help out their team and hopefully pay more attention to what is going on. When we move up the lines I think we should move them up at a certain time during the match. For example if we play a 10 minute game the lines should move up at 5 minutes or in a 8 minute game at 4 minutes, not when there are only two people left on either side. This way if it seems like a match will go in too long moving the lines up will decrease the chance of that. By moving the lines up after two members on either team are left gives the team with more members an unfair advantage. As far as the balls go I think we could use some smaller balls along with the larger 10 inch balls. I played with larger balls and smaller balls when I was a kid. The smaller balls were called (stingers) since they were smaller they could be thrown harder abd stung like hell. You could also if you were good, put a spin on it which made it harder to catch. If anyone has smaller size dodgeballs please bring them to our next game. Now remember our next game will probably take place the first week in August we just have to confirm when the gym will be available to rent. If you have any comment about my ideas or have your own ideas please email me at themoviecritic79@yahoo.com or post here on the boards and we can discuss them. These are just a few of the ideas I have that we could use. However, I don't want to do too much at once so maybe in the future we can add more rules. I hope I hear back from you and remember when the next game is announced print out some fliers and try to post them around town and hand them out to your friends. Hopefully this will help and the next time we will have a greater turn out. I did this for our last game. I found that if you asked a store if they would let you post a flier for the game they were more than willing to help you out.

Hey I saw the little notice in the Mesquite News, I could get lots of people to play, but almost everybody I've told said they would only play if could be a tournament setup, with teams. If you plan a tournament there will be a better turnout.

I will be there again this Weds.

I don't know about adding to many more rules. I would cut down on the number of balls we use however. I think we should use 6 or so. That would make every throw even more important.
Just an idea.

Also if we have 20 people whow up maybe we could split up into 4 teams and then play a small tourney. The games go so quick we could actually get 5 tourneys done if we wanted.
themoviecritic79  58
07-26-2004 01:48 PM ET (US)
I agree. I think we did have too many balls last time. If we cut down on balls it would lead to a more strategic game. I don't really want to add many rules. In fact we should enforce the rules before making new ones. Like staying in bounds and running off the court to avoid getting hit. Just like the boundary lines we use to separate the teams. You cross them and you are out, you cross the sideline boundaries you should be out also. Also, the lines should be moved up at a certain time in a match. For example five minutes into the match the lines should be moved up. The way we were doing it last time when two guys left on either side and the lines moved gave the team with more guys an unfair advantage. It would be easy. We could ask someone from the rec to blow a whistle a certain amount of time into the match. However the 5 or 10 second rule would be harder to enforce for the time being, We would need referees to enforce this. How many people are you bringing with you Jugster? Thanks for taking the time to post and I will see you next Wednesday.

Hey, we were on the front page of the Mesquite News on Thursday 8/05/2004!

http://www.zwire.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=...ept_id=528206&rfi=6

Movie spawns interest in dodgeball
Movies tend to create unique fads.

The Star Wars series created an army of stormtrooper/jedi knight wannabes, dressing the part and going to conventions.

The movie "Swingers" created an interest in the big band swing music of the 20s.

And, recently the movie "Dodgeball - A True Underdog's Story" has the country playing a bygone junior high physical education elimination game.

The interest appeared in Mesquite recently as Wednesday night, a group of dodgeball enthusiasts gathered at Dunford Community Center to play.

But unlike the movie - where the team from Globo Gym tried to embarrass and humiliate the team from Average Joe's - the dodgeball games at Dunford are simply for fun and relaxation.

Postal worker Tom Wakefield saw the movie and remembered playing the game as a young man.

So, he decided to create an Internet forum looking for people who might be interested in playing.

"The movie provided the impetus," he said. "I posted a little page on the Web asking if people would be interested in playing. I didn't even register it with the search engines, but still people found me and wanted to play."

Last week, Wakefield said about 20 people showed up to play.

And play they did ... almost immediately.

"Everyone got there and started talking about choosing up sides," he said. "But before any of that could happen, we rolled 12 balls on the floor and everyone went to a side and we just started playing. It was the most fun I've had since the fifth grade."

The movie prompted a general interest in dodgeball - a game involving combatants trying to hit their opponents with red, rubber balls to eliminate them from the game.

The game takes varying forms, but the general premise remains the game - the team whose last member is eliminated loses the round.

However, the thrower can be eliminated if the person he or she is trying to hit catches the ball.

The game's detractors say it is nothing more than an attempt for stronger players to prey on weaker ones.

Still, Wakefield said it shouldn't have been eliminated from P.E. programs.

"It takes skill, strategy and intelligence," he said. "And, I play racquetball and I'm in pretty good shape. But it [dodgeball] is a pretty good work out. There were people saying they were very sore because they were using muscles they hadn't used in a long time with all of the stopping and starting."

A restaurant/club in Addison has actually formed dodgeball leagues with teams, schedules and everything.

Wakefield said he's really not concerned with structured league play because of the costs involved and the liability waivers that would have to be established.

"If you get into leagues, then it's $35 a team or something and uniforms and insurance and whatever," he said. "We just want to keep it fun and unstructured. Besides, the Addison league is at a bar and that's certainly no place to take kids. If you want to play in a league, go to Addison. If you want to play and have fun, we can do it this way."

There is a risk involved in playing dodgeball - some players throw harder than others. But Wakefield said the injury risk is not that great - at least from the flying dodgeballs.

"I think in our games, players would be more likely to sprain and ankle or something than they would be likely to get hurt by the balls."

Wakefield was even a little reluctant to talk about the dodgeball and Dunford for fear it might begin to grow out of control.

He said he has two nationally recognized Web sites, but he has been amazed at the responses from the simple dallasdodgeball.com forum.

"I had someone drive all the way over from Arlington to play," he said. "It really has been amazing."

If you have attended one of our dodgeball games in the past or plan on attending one in the future please send me an email at themoviecritic79@yahoo.com. I am sure you all have heard that Dodgeball III is in the works. Please keep checking the web site to see when we will play next and please tell your friends about our games and the web site. Also, about two months ago I sent a message through dodgeball meetup to a guy in Plano who says he plays with about 15 to 20 other guys and is interested in playing in a tournament or playing against other teams. Again I sent him thismessage about two moths ago and he is just getting back to me, so who knows if I will even here back from him. I sent him an email telling him that we play in Mesquite and to get back with me. Would anyone be interested in playing against him? Please let me know. I am also looking for suggestions as to what we could do different at our next game. It could be anything thing from rules to how we operate. One thing I would like to suggest is that when you get out of the game stay off the court. Last time it was hard to tell who was in and who was out. Talk to you later.

I have not heard back from him, so I went ahead and sent him another email. I will let everyone now if I hear back from him. Again he claims to play with 15 to 20 players twice a week in Plano. I told him we are planning another game soon and that he needs to get back with me as soon as possible. Since school is fixing to start I figured we may lose some players and hopefully this will give us a chance to play with new players so we can keep playing. I have been in contact with one of the guys that works in intramural sports at UTA and although he said he can't post any fliers he said he can tell the students by word of mouth. I am also thinking of contacting the principals at Mesquite high schools if it looks like we lose too many players and are in need of more people. The turnout has been good for the past two games, although I would have liked more this past game seeing as their was mention of us in both the Dallas Morning News and Mesquite newspaper. I think we lost some people since the last game, but gained some as well. I talked to a few players this last time and they said they found out about the game through the newspaper or by the fliers that I printed up and left up there at Dunford which I plan on also doing for our next game. Hopefully being front page on the Mesquite News will help us bring more players this time. If any one else has any ideas on how we can bring in new players please let me know.

Hello,

I made it to your games last week and really enjoyed it. I'm glad that you are doing this. But dang, I was sore for the next few days! Definitely stretch beforehand!

If I may make a couple of suggestions. I wasn't really sure who was in charge and would just like to encourage those that are setting this up to make an effort to introduce themselves. I only say this because I would have liked to have met the people and give my rental donation.

Plus, I worry about smaller kids playing. I know it's all in fun but the reality of it is, balls are thrown hard and kids with bloody noses is now a reality. Maybe either acclimate the rules toward smaller ones or set up a separate game.

In addition, I know I haven't seen anything about it, but some female friends of mine are actually interested in playing. So is there a 'rule' against that or does it really matter? I figure not but just wanted to be sure.

Thanks again,
R

Yeah I was sore after our first game which is why I stretched before this last game and in fact I think I may have been the only one which is how you will be able to recognize me at the next game lol. As far as introducing ourselves I would also like to get a chance to know everybody's name and at least get to know a little bit about everybody. Maybe not though because when you are pounding someone with the ball do you really care to know their name I mean knowing someone’s name makes it that much harder to throw the ball at somebody and take them out. Just kidding. I like the suggestion and if time would allow maybe we could do this. These forums give us the opportunity to do this and I wish more people would take advantage of this. The only people that I have seen take advantage of this on a consistent basis is Tom, Jugster, and me. Yes, females are welcome to play. I was actually wondering if there would ever be any females to come and play because up to this point it has been all males. I have actually invited some people to come play dodgeball and the first thing they ask me is if there are going to be any women there lol. We are planning our next game and it should be posted on the web site very soon, so please tell your friends about the web site and keep checking the site and be sure to join our mailing list. We could always use more players. Thanks for showing up at our last game and I hope to see you and your friends at the next one.

I was much less sore after the second time we played. As for girls/women playing, that sounds good to me. As for smaller kids, I was concerned about the yourger ones myself, especially after the one received a bloody nose in the last game. I don't want to set an age limit, but if you are the parent of a child wanting to play, please use your best judgment. These games consist mostly of adults age 16 and over, and some can throw pretty hard.

Yeah, I was concerned too when I saw younger kids. From observing them it looked like they had a real good time though and I would like to give credit to the kid that did receive a bloody nose. He left the game to wipe the blood off and still kept playing. I don't think there are many people who would have kept playing. I don't want to see age limits either, but would like everyone to take it easy on the younger ones and remember it usually does not take your hardest throw to get them out. Jim the past two games we have played have been from 7 to 9 pm and both games have fallen on Wednesday. I think the original plans were to play at least once a month. Just be sure to check the web site for updated game information. I know another game is in the works and I am hoping for an announcement very soon. Please tell your friends about our games and tell them to check out the web site. I hope to see you at our next game and hope your friends come along. Talk to you later.

The kid with the bloody nose was my kid. I really didn't mean to bring him but my wife went over board when I said he could go. I mentioned it about a week before the game in a serious but not expecting to be taken up on the offer. She then told the mom of the red head kid and I was stuck. I don't know if they will play again because they are a bit to young.
I do want my son to get a bloody nose and to play with older people. I believe that people wont learn how to deal with pain and embarrasment if they never feel it. Anyways I digress.

What do you guys think about getting our best 5 or 6 guys that are over 18 and playing in the Addison tourney some weds night? One week when we don't have anything scheduled it would cool to see where we stand.
themoviecritic79  73
08-12-2004 04:56 PM ET (US)
I understand Jugster. Just be sure your wife does not read these boards because she may kill you if she saw that you said she was going over board. I would be willing to go to Addison for a tourney as long as we planned it ahead of time, so I could make arrangements to attend. I still have not heard back from the guy from Plano who claims he plays twice a week with a group of 15 to 20 guys. My thought was to see if they could play with us, so we could play with new players and maybe one game we could have 5 or 6 of their best players against our best players. But like I said I posted a message to him on the dodgeball meetup at it took him a month to even reply back and since then I have sent him three emails asking him to reply back but have heard nothing. I guess he is scared of us lol. Does anyone know what rules they gp by in Addison? Are they the same as ours or different?

I am not sure if anyone is aware of this, but Dodgeball is not an Olympic Sport. I was at first shocked and appalled when I first found this out. After I got over my grief. I did further research and found that there our actually talks of Dodgeball becoming an Olympic event. I am currently looking to see if there is a petition that could be signed to help further this cause. I still can't believe it though. I mean just look at some of the sports that are in the Olympics currently Canoe, Table Tennis, and Trampoline just to name a few. What kind of idiots do they have running the Olympics? Which got me to thinking if I ran the Olympics what sports would I have in my Olympics. Down below I have compiled a list of Summer and Winter Sports I would have in my Olympics. Feel free to add your own and send your suggestions. I hope you enjoy them and I will see you all at the next Dodgeball game.

I have made fliers for this game and the previous two games in order to bring more people to play in our games. What I have been doing is printing them up and asking local businesses if they would allow me to post them and many businesses have actually allowed me to do this. I have been having the most luck with convenience stores. I also have been handing them out to friends and inviting them to come to the game. If anyone would be interested in having a copy of the flier and doing the same please send me an email to themoviecritic79@yahoo.com with "Dodgeball Flier" in the subject and I will send you the flier in an attachment. Dodgeball IV and V
We had a very good turnout for Dodgeball IV played on September 15th. Dodgeball V will be played on a new night - Tuesday (October 12th)! Also new for Dodgeball V: Bowling pins! You may remember bowling pins from your grade-school PE classes. You must guard your pins from the opposing team while trying to knock down your opponent's pins. There a several variations to the rules regarding bowling pins in dodgeball, especially concerning when the game ends. Does it end when all players are out on a team, when all the pins are knocked down, or both? Discuss how you think we should play in our forum.

I have nothing but fond memories of playing dodgeball in school and am glad to be playing again. From my experience of playing in school there are different types of players. As I begin to play more I am beginning to recognize the same type of players from my days of playing in elementary school. Here are the different types of players as I see it. Which one are you? I hope you enjoy it.

Runners- They get the ball from the opponents hands to the stash your team accumulates. Or they are the ones that fear for their lives because they are on someone's hit list.

Hitters- These are usually the jocks. They like to nail the runners, who are usually people of a different school social status, or hit other hitters as a joke or as a sign of showing that they are the best (very primitive). They usually are hit last

Sitters- Usually consisting of girls, as the boys always like to show off (or stay alive). They always stand around behind the hitters and talk. They are usually the last ones to get out because they are in the back, or the first, because someone throws a good shot into a crowd. Sitters also provide good cover for...

Hiders/Dodgers- These are the guys that would be runners, but want to save energy for a more interesting situation. Usually only intense D-Ball players are hiders/dodgers (me), or girls that actually throw the ball sometimes.

I know we are going to try to raise thirty dollars at our next game and was just thinking of what else we could do in order to raise enough money. Here are a few of my ideas I came up with.

1.Donate your brain to science. Hey after Tuesday’s game you will get hit in the head so many times you won’t need it any more.
2.Three Words: Nude Car Wash.
3.Every time you kill a guy, put a nickel in a jar.
4.Cutting your own hair is a great way to save money.
5.For the next six months do nothing but check local pay phones in your area for change.
6.In order to save gas money you could buy yourself a cadaver, so you can drive in the HOV lane and with the money you save on gas you could donate.
7.If all else fails you could always sell your blood.

If you will be attending the dodgeball game on Tuesday October 12 again it cost no money, but we ask that you make donations to the white bucket you will see at the game marked DONATIONS. If we raise thirty dollars at the game we can have another game in two weeks, instead of the usual one game a month. If we raise at least thirty dollars at every other game there is the possibility of having a game every other week. Also, at the game you will see a sign in sheet. The purpose of this is to keep the players informed on when are next game will be by sending out an email. It is hard enough since we don't have a set schedule and our games are based on the availability of the gym. This should cut down on the problem of people not knowing when the game will be and missing out.
I ask that both players who have attended the games and new players please try to help us out with donations and sign up even if we have your email address so we can update our mailing list. Please also tell your friends so that can help us out with donations and we can get their contact info as well Thanks for the help and I will see you at the game on Tuesday.

What was everyone's opinion of the pins and what else would you like to see in the future, this being either rule changes or things added to the game like we did pins for this last game. I felt using pins added more strategy to the game. One of the complaints I here from alot of people is that we don't play enough and I agree with them. Our plan was to try to have a game every other week which is why we had a donation bucket for this last game. It cost $30 dollars to rent the gym and we were not even close to raising that much. I know of only two people who actually donated money and I would like to thank you again. Maybe if we could raise $15 at every game we could arrange to have a game every other week. I even gave examples to people on how they could raise money for donations. To see what they were look back at my previous post. I would like to thank the three guys from Stephenville who came to the game. I am not sure if anyone is aware of this, but Stephenville is 120 miles away. I hope these guys come back because it was exciting playing with new players. I was disappointed that not as many people showed up as in the past. We were still throwing the balls around still at 7:15 hoping that enough people would show up.
