I have an new dual antenna imesh here. It is not behaving itself. I must be doing something wrong. I bring it in the house and it talks to other meshboxes in the area. I put it outside on the building where it is supposed to live and it won't. I have put an 8db omni on the primary antenna and left the other one alone. As I said, it works in the house...
help anyone! Is anyone reading this thread or did it die in 2004?

PRetty much, you nail it to the house, yes! :-)
I like the idea. An Ethernet cable works just fine for well over 50m, probably twice that if you don't kink it. An antenna cable over a couple of metres is starting to cause losses. So it means that you can really get some height for your mesh box - and that, obviously, means range.
I'm struggling, though, with a concept of using this to get better in-building penetration. I have this vague idea that if all of us in the neighbourhood put these boxes on our highest walls, then set up a mesh. then we really won't have any blind spots. I guess I just have to set up a mesh, and find out...

What I mean is that the modern cell phone is worn discreetly behind the ear :-) Cell towers are larger, I do realise, and that's what this box corresponds to - right? But still... . Edited 09-23-2004 07:10 AM

there is actually an RF port (type "N") that you connect an antenna to. I think the best antenna for a mesh is on Omni-Directional so it can talk to many other nodes in the area.
Funny you feel it is husky for a wireless outdoor solution, if you look at others like Proxim, even Motorola's Canopy (both not mesh) they are similar or larger in size then this...

I did wonder why it appeared to have a power lead and an antenna and no other connection, and to be the size of a modem in 1990. You don't expect 3G-cell era comms gear to be so husky - well, except for satellite dishes. So, what, you just strap it on your chimney and let it radiate? . Edited 09-22-2004 06:10 AM

Could it be that you were promised a view of a whisky container? Pringle containers have the same effect in guiding the direction of radio waves. So I have heard. Don't ask me how it works.
