What's the rationale for having poets pay and how much? Is it pay per time, weight of subject matter, quality, or lack thereof? Does the money get redistributed to the audience after the show?

Hey, John, congratulations and best wishes to your dearest!

Hi John, nice piece, but it left me wanting more. Is there a sequel in the works? :)

Jay-sus Stiles! Whatcha' doin' in England? N'wonder I hain't seen ya around. Good to read your voice. These poets who pay to perform: I assume they do it because of all the big-shot editors and such who attend? Seems a little like vanity publishing to me. Although it would maybe shorten the queue for the open mike. Any success stories? What's the quality of the work like?

Is there anything like a small press scene in the UK? Is the UK lit world generally structured like the Can lit world? Where would one go on the WWW to get a peek of the UK small press scene?

p.s.
Liked the article!

for brit stuff try the website Freebase Accordian. look in the links section. http://www.manson88.freeserve.co.uk/

If Ireland is close enough for you then Wild Honey Press is a good place to start.http://www.wildhoneypress.com/

I was in England a few weeks ago and in the 20 or so book stores I went in to (new and used) in London the poetry sections were chock full (anyone know where that phrase comes from?) of Bloodaxe and Faber.

Nice to see how many non-British books Bloodaxe publishes. Maybe one day our presses will be so grownup.
