There was some point during the initial invasion where like 10% of the casualties were from drowning--men, vehicles and the like going into those canals.
Get used to it. This war is going to go on for a while.

I have friends over there...marines. I sit up nights going through the news channels looking for word on their unit, anything on Iraq. I appreciate so much Kevin's news reports. I have started trying to catch his when I can. I too wish this war was over and will be so glad when it is.

i just wish politicians had to fight. im not a big military cheerleader, hate war personally. but i am starting to think we shouldnt have politicians who havent seen the effects war firsthand. this whole fiasco started because power attracts corrupt ambitious monsters and the present group, in both parties, let politics come before asking for serious evidence of threat. now our soldiers are having to live like savages as they kill an enemy that wasn't there before we started ravaging the place. over a decade old chemical shell and a non-american power hungry shithead. i dont even say torturer or murderer anymore, seems we are no better in that regard. its seriuosly depressing that things have come down to partisan extremism, to the point of war. i pray for all the people over there, ours and theirs. hopefully if anything was learned from this whole tragedy, its that hopefully people know to question their leaders, not to just take things at face value strictly because they are a part of the same party as you.

OK, maybe some uniforms are like this on one shoulder, but the American flag has been flipped around its vertical axis, hasn't it? Does that mean the photo has been 'shopped?

There's well-informed debate going on all around the world right now and we're all sick of this war. This is truly horrible and the knock on effect is incredible. I rarely read the regular news now (only "blogs") and we think about the political debate. I'm afraid it has become something we're all preoccupied about. I'm in HK, where I guess WE are tied to the US economy. I've already completely alienated one friend with my reaction to it - that the Bushie neo-cons are wrecking the world with their stupid ventures. The rest of us just wish it would end and dread the thought of those thieving, lying bastards getting back in again and we can't even vote AGAINST them. I feel sorry for those kids and angry at the chickenhawks that sent them including my own prime minister "Blurred".

Bush and Blair are defending their countries, and indeed the world, from islamic fascism. Fanatical muslims are killing non-muslims in over 20 countries. That they do not wreak more havoc is simply due to the fact that they don't yet have the means. If muslims don't start pointing fingers where they deserve to be pointed (such as at the barbarians in the Sudan) instead of at Americans, you will force us to literally destroy Islam.
America has no need to "extricate" itself from anything. The only reason there is any difficulty at all in Iraq is that we are good people, and would rather try and root out terrorists there while leaving civilians alive than simply remove trouble spots like Fallujah and Najaf from the map with a coupe of MOABs.

Hey Jean-Michel, if our soldiers come back in body bags, then next time your people are thrown into a crisis, here's hoping your own damn country can handle it yourselves. I am so sick of your kind whining about Americans and wishing death on us all as if every single one of us is to blame for this. Yet if we went over to Afghanistan and slaughtered them like pigs after 9/11, you would claim their people are not to blame, only the terrorists themselves. Your hipocrisy is astounding and quite frankly disgusting.

Is killing for "your cause" really a mute point?
Are you shooting without thinking?
Is aiming your weapon at a target and pulling the trigger a reflex action?
Are you shooting a pop up polyurethane foam bad guy or a human being?
Do you have to face your target before you will shoot?
Are you prepared to shoot your target in the back?
Are you prepared to shoot a child? A woman? An old person?
Are you prepared to bury the person you have killed?
Are you prepared to touch the body you have just killed with your bare hands?
Are you prepared to look the dead person in the face and touch their face?
Are you prepared to talk to the person's family?
Are you prepared to justify your reasons for killing this person?
Does the Bible really provide you with justification for killing?
Are you convinced that Jesus didn't really mean Do violence to no man when the soldiers asked him What shall we do? Luke 3:14
Are you sure Jesus didn't really mean Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you? Luke 6:2
Is your justification for killing For he is God's minister to you for good. But if you do evil, be afraid; for he does not bear the sword in vain; for he is God's minister, an avenger to execute wrath on him who practices evil? Romans 13:4
Is the passage for he does not bear the sword in vain your justification?
Does Jesus kill anyone with a sword in the bible?
Do any of Jesus's apostles kill anyone with a sword in the bible?
You can see how questions like these could activate your conscience or cause you to hesitate to pull the trigger.
If you find yourself asking these questions, see a Combat Stress officer immediately.

Thank you for showing with honesty the situation that the troops face everyday. My husband served over there the first time, and most people have no idea what those people go through over there. All of the anti-war folks still haven't been able to tell me the answer to this question..."9-11 connections aside - I suppose all of you were perfectly fine with the injustice and blatant killing of the Iraqui people under Sadaam Hussein?" These same people would dare to say "we Americans" waited too long to do anything about the Holocaust. Hypocrites!

I have enjoyed reading this article. These soldiers sacrifice so much for our country and Iraq. It is easy to get caught up in the critizism of soldiers, our government, and the Iraq war. Reading stories such as these reminds me of how blessed our country is to have soldiers that are willing to sacrafice so much for their country. The media tends to focus on the negative aspects of the War in Iraq, but I would like to hear and see evidence of the good we have accomplished. A POW once said that he would be willing to return to Iraq to help the people there rebuild their country. He said the satisfaction of helping the Iraqi's rebuild their government is worth the sacrifice. Thank you for allowing Americans to see what life in Iraq really is like...the good and the bad. Please let the soldiers know we are praying for them daily, and tell them they are setting a wonderful example for everyone in America.

Someone needs to get the message out. Know you are appreciated, both by those of us at home who would hear the REAL story and by the soldiers who need to get the situation off their chests and know it's being heard at least somewhere. Tell them that we know they're there. We haven't forgotten the true soldiers and their honor. Let them know we're thinking about them and all those that risk their lives overseas.

I don't have any sure opinion about it, even if I read a lot and try to understand different point of vue . There is no sure answer , read some blog from Irak and you'll see that it's not as evident as we can think over here. Helene - GO HOME, you have to pick a side in war hon, you French (and I do mean ALL) have picked your side and it is not the US's. When I see a photo of a French solder or even a French reporter in Iraq I will begin to believe that it is not all of you. Why are you here??? You still consider yourself French. The only French in Iraq are the contracters that are there now to make money!!! How convienent!!!! Do you people even have an army any more??? Or do you just bank on the fact that if your sorry asses got in trouble the good old US would come save you. And by the way where was your president during the Regan funeral, anouther smack in the face and lack of respect on YOUR country's part. Keep up the class act. And ps if you are so impaitent with Americans why are you still here????

Hugo, I don't know where was Chirac during the funeral ,nobody ask me to plan my president agenda ! Yes, France still have an army...only professional for the last 4 years or so...They were in Haiti and Ivory Cost not long ago. Well , too bad you don't speak french so you could have translate the last sentences of my message, which was saying to Jean Pierre that I was very impatient to have my american citizenship to not be anymore from the same country as a morron like him..but reading your answer I wonder if the US is the best for me, it seems that stupidity and arrogance are not the privilege of french guy... So you see ,I consider myself french because I have to wait 5 more years to be able to ask for citizenship, and I 'm here to care for you american , and to treat your cancer ... And , No I don't have to take a side in this war because I don't have all the information and I don't vote so I don't have any possibility to make my opinion known. Hope this answer will make you think a little more before you write !

Helene, I apologize for "Ugly Americans" like Hugo. This country was founded on welcoming people from many countries and nationalities. There are many thoughts and opinions on this war and it's not black and white but rather shades of grey. Hugo, if you check your American history you may find that very possibly we would not be the United States we now know without the help of the French in the Revolutionary war. Kevin, thanks once again for the truth.

Wow, everyone has so much to say. Kevin-I REALLY enjoy your site, this is the kind of thing I would like to hear more about. The media makes it so that we are somewhat desensitized to what is actually happening, with so much fuss over the Administration. It's nice to hear from the guys on the front lines.
For those of you that just can't see the forrest for the trees - Life is One: God led men into battle, I'm not going so far to say that God led us into battle, but the fact remains, He did lead men into battle - its there, look at Gideon's story. Our goal in Iraq is NOT to kill, our soldiers do not WANT to kill. However, what you don't understand is that they, the fanatics, are killing us as well. Kill or be Killed. Where do you draw the line between defending yourself and blatantly killing people? Like a suicide bomber?? And Jean-Michel, you poor thing. What you said doesn't make you worth any more than what you wish for us. That was a terrible thing to say. I wish that no one would have to go home to where ever in a body bag. Shame on you! And people wonder where hostilities come from???? Tinashe, do you say those same things to the terrorists who continue to kill not only Americans but the Iraqi people as well??? There is a distinct difference in what we are doing there compared to what the terrorists are doing. We experienced only a part of the evil on 9-11-01. That IS terroristic. The suicide and car bombings are TERRORISTIC. We are not their only target, so be leary. Helene, I'm sorry but Hugo is upset. I can understand that. Anyone who reads this should understand that the mess we are in - we are in. We can't take it back. I don't necessarily agree with the war but I do think that Sadam should at some point have been "de-throwned". I don't like the fact that we are loosing precious people in the process, but its part of the inevitable. People should not hate Americans b/c we didn't get to vote (and that could at some point be skeptical) on whether or not we wanted to go to war, nor did the soldiers. So, why verbally attack us on such a personal level? Don't assume that we all think alike, that would be like us thinking that all muslims are evil, or ALL people think alike for that matter.

I feel home here, much more than in France. I completly agree with you about the war Aprilla , I 'm not sure we should have go to war but I'm sure that we had to take Saddam down , shame on the world to let him kill so many people for so long we should have all go long ago. I also think the UN should have take responsability for that , it would felt more " legitimate " but..

You have got to be kidding me... Helene - did you not hear me the first time?? GO HOME... Who do you think you are??? Let me guess.. you're French... you think you rule the world... you don't, only one little shitty country. Here to help us??? I don't think so, you are here to learn what we can teach your sorry ass and take it back there to help YOUR PEOPLE like JM, whom I would like to remind you, hopes that all AMERICIANS COME HOME IN BODY BAGS and this is who you are defending as our people are defending your ass. Whats this below?? You think the world should have taken him down long ago??? Hello, wake up your people that you defend sure as hell didn't feel that way. And how sad is it that you people have to go back to LafFeette to find a frenchmen that helped the US, he has his portrait hanging in the s court chambers and a few high schools names after him what else do you want??? You people have to go back over two hundread years to find one of you that helped us, and you still want praise??? What do we get for d day you bitch. My relatives have been here and fought in every war this country has ever had, and they were glad to be here and be AMERICAN they would never never never bad mouth a soldier that wears this country uniform, and there are many soldiers that have not been here that long and still are proud to fight for what we stand for. What do you people stand for? Do you really think we care that your asses screwed us again? In case you didn't notice, we didn't need you. What would you have contributed? Creme puffs? The only good thing you people have going for you is the editor of french vogue (and she is half russian, so that proves I can be fair, cuz they suck too)and maybe a few wines. Why don't you stop worrying about the 1700s and try current events, YOUR country and NATO last week really helped AGAIN!!! PLEASE save me the bullshit. And by the way Helene, give up, you will never beat an American. Never have and never will. And you feel at home here? That is the problem with you people, you want it both ways (just like in Iraq) screw us and our soldiers but I like living here. YOU MAKE ME SICK!!! Someday you will need us and I hope America doesn't forget, that is what you are banking on, smack us around all you want and we will still be there as the nice guys, maybe not, and I hope it happens when you need us the most. Oh, by the way if all of our people did come back in body bags (which they won't cuz it hasn't happened yet) your sorry asses will be minced meat. So I hope your army can handle it, I find that hard to believe, I personally think that Monaco and all ten of their defences could take your ass (admit it, you all want those casinos real bad). Ta Ta for now Bitch.

Hugo, SHUT UP already. I really tried to give you the benefit of the doubt - that you weren't a complete ass but, you fooled me because I was terribly wrong. Americans like you are the reason why they don't like us, so arrogant. And, why might I ask are you taking your frustration for the French government out on Helene?? Isn't that the same as them taking their anger out on us when we really have no control? She obviously doesn't get to decide what the French government does. Like we don't get to decide here. You sound so ignorant. And, the freedom of speech is something our country takes pride in and is extremely important to our people. You obviously didn't read my post?? Why do you think that "We" should get anything for D day? Did YOU do that? America IS about helping people. Why must we brag about all we've done? It's history, everyone knows what happened. Are you a soldier? Enlisted?? How about you save us all the BS. "And, by the way Helene, give up, you will never beat an American." WHAT?? What? Come on, you can't be serious. Is that what it is about?? You are so terribly confused. JM is the one that made the terrible remarks, check the posts, sweetheart. You act like you're a commanding general or something, like you have control, but your talking out of your ass. You are so rude and insanely ignorant that your post really shouldn't even be acknowledged. But, I'm sure will here from you again... Take a pill and think long and hard. Try to open your narrow mind a little and let some light shine in. I'll pray for you.

America is an unique and awesome country. We have achieved so much in such a short time. Think about our young country in the throes of revolution...while forming a new government for the people and by the people. We are not infallible...we are vulnerable, combined with our freedom of speech, rich literature, open minds, kind hearts and committed soldiers...we will always be America: envy to some, hope to others!

Helene and the dancer chick - Taking out my frustration on Helene? I hope that people like me are the reason they hate us. Do you really think I give a shit. Oh, PLEASE let the French like me!!!! Are you for real?? D day about helping others? We were blown apart on those beaches bitch, it wasn't a tv movie of the week. Maybe if you voted (well, the dancer chick anyway, helene can't for what, another five years, thank god) you would have some control. The problem with you people is that while you seem to think that you are at a poetry reading, people are dying. Maybe you should bump up to Poe so that you are closer to the correct genre. Put down your violins and wake up. I think you really want Match.com or something. And it doesn't surprise me there are pills involved with you people, really clouds the head. I realize he is harsh but Hugo is correct about how hard some are on America. Where is the outrage over the beheading of Mr. Johnson? There was SO much outrage - maybe deserved - over the way that we treat others, but not much over this civilian being brutally murdered in that way. There is a double standard one for the United States and one for the rest of the world. We will never win a war when the other side is banking on our hands being tied to make the rest of the world happy.

I'm going to do my best to not drop to your level Hugo. For one, you really need to READ my post before you TRY to respond. I'm not going to rewrite my last post so that you can actually get what I'm trying to say. 1) You are taking your apparent frustration(if that's not what it is, then what IS it?)out on Helene and just being plain nasty. 2) I really don't care if you don't care if "they" like you- I was making a point, like it or not. Some how you always find a way to misconstrue what I've said. 3) I didn't say that D Day was about helping people - it was obviously about defending our country. But you should read my post for real. I am well aware of the FACT that we were blown away on those beaches and know that it isn't a TV movie... You're making what I've said something its not. 4) I DID VOTE, I'm not stupid. BUT EVEN THOUGH I VOTED DOESN'T MEAN I HAVE ANY CONTROL! You are so so pityful, I mean really. Are you even an adult? I think you have a problem understanding the English language. So, let me give you a little lesson: "Take a [chill] pill" is a figure of speech. I am a college graduate and work in finance. I'm not ignorant. Your going to have to come up with something better than that. Liz, do you want to talk about the other citizens that have been beheaded since we went to Afghanistan? I'm willing.

Hugo in a way I am on you're side but you could possibly make your point in a nicer way. Just a suggestion if you want people to agree with you.

Dancer chick - drop to my level? I am sure you are use to droping down and all but really, why are you so concerned about my frustration? Just a job hazard I guess. I really don't think that d-day was just about defending OUR country it was also about defending all those snotty ass french (and the rest of europe) that are bitchin about us now. And for the record, there was no reference to "chill" in your post, take one and sit down and think. That is your problem (well one of them anyway) you twist and wiggle out of any point you try to make. I do not think that counting ones is to be considered "working in fiance" but hey, however you want to label it. Maybe you should stop swinging around the pole, I think it is getting you dizzy. To get back to my point.... I leave you with the bottom line AMERICA HAS FREED MORE PEOPLE IN 230 YEARS THAN THE REST OF THE WORLD COMBINED SINCE THE BEGINNING OF TIME....this is fact and now we are getting bitched at because some assholes would like us to do it nicer.... whatever, every time WE go in and free and spill our blood, we than rebuild with our money and they walk away a new and free nation thanks to us. ...do you even understand this, do you (and the french) just choose to believe that this is not the case?? Look it up, if it wasn't for us, who would have came to the calling? certainly not the creme puff eating french.

Hi... Kevin... as always, thank you for your words from the front. The harsh reality is for me very difficult to digest today as the man I am in love with just recieved deployment orders for October 8th. I guess it is the fear of the unknown that is most frightening to me. But everyday, I put a smile on my face, tell him how proud I am of him and move to a subject that is less impactful and reality based. It is almost a game really, because I don;t want him to think about me worrying about him. I just want him to think about what he needs to do to be safe so he can come home to me. We have only known each other a short time. He is a Major with the Reserves and is 35 years old... we have discussed marriage and engagement.... what we will do over the next three weeks I am unsure of. I pray everyday that he is deployed to Kuwait because I heard that it is not nearly as dangerous. (Is that selfish of me?? Still I hope he does.) When I read about the infantry men.... what struck me most was the fact that their lives are changed forever. What they see, hear, do, etc.... these experiences will stay with them forever... and at such a young age........ It also saddens me, and worries me even more that the military is not granting our soldiers the ability to go home. Shouldn;t they be home after one tour? I wonder... will my love go over there only to find he can not come home to me...... maybe ever....???? As I write this... I think of you Kevin..... because I know that you have done several tours over in this part of the world beginning with Afghanistan after 9/11. Although I do not know you personally, I admire and respect you and am so very proud of you...... You are a beautiful person to bring the human story home to all of us. I better stop writing now... tears fill my eyes, my heart aches, and fear is breeding sickness inside.....

I thank you for these words and photo's---these young men become my own sons and son's friends when I see their faces and read their words. I have not done enough to see that they are protected from such things such as what is happening in IRAQ now. I will do all I know to help now. If there is anything they would like to recieve such as food, clothes, reading material letters or whatever let me know. They are all in my prayers and hopes and in the way I will vote come November. I want them all to come home now.
