Journey Family,

We miss you so much! We're in New York and are toughing out the cold weather. We've been doing great out here but do miss family, friends and good Korean food. I ventured into real estate, Ryan's busy with work, our Golden Retriever puppy is keeping us busy and we've found a great start-up church.

I hope all of you are doing great and hope to keep in touch. Email if you can at jamy_cho@yahoo.com.

Take care

From Jannet in Thailand... Jannet, we miss you. Hang in there and may God continue to use you for His Kingdom!

hello all,

how is everyone doing? i've been in thailand for about 3 weeks now. right
now i'm in khao-lak (which is in southern thailand). my team is working at
one of the biggest displacement camps in this area which is called bang
muang. there are about 2,000 people living in this camp. there is a tent
that we mainly work in which is run by calvary chapel. my team is teaching
english to kids and adults and we're also going around and just helping out.
for example, some of the guys have done some construction work and us
girls have spent time taking care of babies. today i picked up trash and
helped to clean the community because the prince of denmark will be coming
to the refugee camp tomorrow. a lot of kids come to our tent to just hang
out with us. they are so cute. they cling to us like super glue. our main
focus is to serve the people and build relationships with them so that we
can share our faith. about a dozen people have come to the Lord because of
former ywam teams that have been out here.

last wednesday was the thai new year so a lot of businesses shut down for
one week to celebrate. the thais celebrate by putting powder on their faces
and throwing buckets of water on eachother. it's a massive water fight
which is good because it is super hot and humid over here! i don't think
i've sweat so much in my life!

we've also experienced death in the camp. one young guy named jay died last
week. he had accepted christ about 2 months ago but he was struggling with
depression and alcoholism because he tried to save 4 children during the
tsunami but they all died so he blamed himself a lot and was blamed by
others in his village for their deaths. he died of alcohol poisioning. but
before his death he led his father to the Lord and his sister accepted
Christ the night that he died. his mom is still a muslim but she comes to
the tent more often so i believe that she will eventually accept Christ.
because of jay's death a lot more people have been coming out to the tent
and many people ask us questions about our faith. the thai tradition is to
keep the dead body (in the coffin) in the person's home for 3 days. because
jay had spent so much time at the tent his body was kept in the tent and
when he died some of the guys in our team decided to sleep in the tent with
some other guys from calvary chapel (who sleep in the tent every night--it
is their home right now). people asked us whether or not we were afraid of
jay's spirit so it was a good opportunity for us to share how our flesh is
nothing and how our soul either goes to heaven or hell and that in Jesus
Christ we have nothing to be afraid of.

i've made friends with a few thai women but i feel there is one woman who
God has placed on my heart to minister to. her name is pen-pish. she has a
5 month old son. i met her the first day i arrived at the camp and she's
been learning english from me. i really believe that God is after her
family because her cousin comes to learn english as well and he has a strong
desire to learn more about Christianity. pen-pish has read a book on
christianity but i really pray that God will convict her in her heart so
that she will passionately accept Christ.

it's hard to listen to so many different stories of how the tsunami has
affected people. most of the people in this camp have lost family members
and they have tears in their eyes as they tell their stories. one woman was
flung onto a pole during the tsunami and she cut her achilles tendon but
didn't feel anything until after everything was over. she was just in
complete shock and she was holding onto the pole for 30 minutes until a huge
crane came to take her down. and she was never able to find her sister's
body. she told me that she has dreams about the tsunami every night.

please pray for these people because many of them feel depressed and
hopeless even though they smile on the outside. the thai people are really
nice and hospitable.=)

hope this brings some light about the tsunami and some encouragment as well.

thank you for all your prayer!

AN UPDATE FROM JANNET:

hey everyone,

just wanted to let you know that i'm going to be going to thailand for my 2-month outreach. thailand was on my heart even before i came to dts and i prayed about my outreach location...so i know that God wants me to go to
thailand. my team will be helping out with tsunami relief. also, next week i'm going to be going to kauai with my outreach team. we're going to be serving a small church on that island. please continue to keep me in your prayers...that God would work through my team and that He would show us how to reach out to everyone we come in
contact with.

thanks so much! have a great weekend.

Hey guys! Just wanted to update ya'all on our apartment situation. Well, yesterday we spent all day looking for apartments in Pasadena, La Crescenta, K-town, and Alhambra. It was very tiresome! We decided to cut a deal with our manager since we have a good relationship with him. He offered us a 2 bedroom/1.5 bath apartment (upstairs and on the other side) for a low price of $1050. This place is like 2.5 times bigger than our itty bitty apartment. And we don't have to pay another security deposit and can start paying from the 1st of February. We also have 2 weeks to slowly move in. No boxes, no moving truck. So, praise God! Also, they are hiring an investigator to check out the mold problem. And both Sung and I got checked out by the doctor, and we're both fine. We are just going to need some help with the heavy furniture this weekend...(hint, hint =) )Anybody need some weight-lifting exercise?

Gracious Father of light,
give us eyes to see Your worth.
Heal our blindness. Save us from the deadly diseas of seeing the world
as worth more than its Maker.
Restore the capacity of our hearts to cherish
infinite beauty and savor infinite sweetness.
Deliver us from the deadening effects of
thinking this short life is the main thing.
In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen

From Jannet (YWAM Training Center)

aloha from hawaii!

i got here on thursday but officially started classes today...well, we had
introductions and went over the overview of the dts program.  i'm getting to
know my roommates and different people around me.  our class is so
big...there are 231 students!  there are usually about 40.  the worship time
is so awesome because you can just feel the holy spirit in this place.
people are so carefree and they just worship however they want to.  i feel
so blessed that the school is being led by the founders, loren and darlene
cunningham.  i know that this is the place that god wants me to be and i'm
so excited to grow closer to him.

the weather was so nice for two days...warm with a cool breeze.  but now
it's overcast and it rains randomly...but it's not cold so i can handle it.
=)

i hope everyone is having a good new year so far.

the picture i've attached is taken from the balcony of the building i'm
staying in.

"From Mattie's Website" : www.mattieonline.com
Making Real Sense of the Senses

Our eyes are for looking at things,
But they are also for crying
When we are very happy or very sad.
Our ears are for listening.
But so are our hearts.
Our noses are for smelling food
But also the wind and the grass and
If we try very hard, butterflies.
Our hands are for feeling.
But also for hugging and touching so gently.
Our mouths and tongues are for tasting.
But also for saying words, like
"I love you," and
"Thank you God, for all of these things."

Mattie J.T. Stepanek is a 13-year-old young man who was born with a rare neuromuscular disease called dysautonomic mitochondrial myopathy. His disease is one of the 43 types of diseases being researched by the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
Mattie has a sister, Katie, and two brothers, Stevie and Jamie, who each died during early childhood from this same infant onset disease that affects Mattie. Mattie's mother, Jeni, has the adult onset form of this disease. She did not know that she would ever have the disease, or that she would pass such a disease on to her children until after she gave birth to them. Mattie lives with his mom and his service dog, Micah, in Maryland.

Even though Mattie's form of this neuromuscular disease is a mutation and very, very rare and difficult to understand, his doctors have learned a lot about what it does to Mattie's body and some of the ways to help Mattie stay as healthy as possible. Mattie uses a wheelchair to get around, like his mom, Jeni. But he also needs a trach (a breathing tube in his neck/trachea), a ventilator (machine that breathes for him), lots of extra oxygen, a Broviac (tube into his heart for medicines and blood products), foot braces, and lots of other equipment. It may sound like a lot of stuff for a kid, but Mattie really knows how to "celebrate life" and "play after every storm."
One of the things Mattie has done to help him cope with loss and continue celebrating life is to write. Since the age of three, Mattie has been dictating, recording, and writing poetry, short stories, and essays about many topics, such as grief, nature, love, disability, hope, life, and peace. He put together his first collection of poetry at age five for a school contest. At age 11, he became a New York Times bestselling author when his volumes of poetry were published. Now, he has had five books of "Heartsongs" poetry collections reach the New York Times bestseller lists. His second book, Journey Through Heartsongs, reached all the way to number one!

In addition to writing, Mattie loves public speaking. In his role as the National Goodwill Ambassador for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA), Mattie does a lot of speaking about how the MDA helps kids and adults with neuromuscular diseases.

He also likes to speak about peace efforts and global tolerance. Mattie has spoken to school children and business leaders, medical personnel and church groups, fire fighters and Harley Davidson riders, all across America. Mattie loves talking to anyone who loves to listen, and then ask questions! One of his favorite speeches was when he got to introduce his hero, Former President Jimmy Carter, at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC.

Mattie has also shared his messages of hope and peace on many television programs. He has been on the Oprah Winfrey Show, Larry King Live, Good Morning America, Primetime, The Today Show, and many other programs many times. Every year, he also helps with the Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon. In 2002, he drove cross country with his mom, and friends, Sandy and Chris, to be in Los Angeles for the Telethon.

He loved getting to see his country coast to coast from the van. In 2003, he was unable to travel because of a decline in his health, so he enjoyed co-hosting all 21 hours of the local Baltimore, MD station telethon.

Mattie feels very lucky to have met many wonderful people during his journey through life. He has become close friends with lots of great people, including Jimmy Carter, Oprah Winfrey, Larry King, Christopher Cross, Lance Bass, and Billy Gilman. During 2003, Mattie and Billy Gilman collaborated on a CD project, Music Through Heartsongs. On the CD, Billy sings 12 of Mattie's poems that have been put to various styles of music, including Celtic, soft rock, Hawaiian, country, jazz, and pop-Christian style. One of his favorite tracks, I AM/Shades of Life, was made into a music video, where Mattie has a cameo.

Mattie also feels very blessed just to be alive at age 13. Children born with his disease do not usually live very long. Mattie knows that each day is a gift, and he makes the most of it. He says he gets his strength from God and his mom, and also from the people that become part of his circle of life. "People tell me I inspire them. And that inspires me. It's a beautiful circle, and we all go around together, with and for each other. What a gift," says Mattie.

I am looking for more information on Mall Latino, which I understand is a ministry of the Journey through All Nations in Lake View Terrace. I am the director for a learning center in Pacoima, which is around the corner from Lake View Terrace.

This is interesting. Well, i'm posting only cuz i was pressured into it by a couple of people who will remain anonymous but are the only other people who posted anything...heheheh. Well, since this space is meant to share i have a prayer request. I just took a blood test to see if something is wrong with me. Pray that it will come back negative...it's not for HIV...or is it? It isn't. Thank you.
