You're probably wondering: How, if the Computex network had crashed were you able to get this story posted? The network really wasn't working. And you couldn't use any of the press office PCs so kindly provided by Shuttle and others. And you couldn't even plug your PC into the LAN using a cable. And no of course there wasn't any wireless network. The answer? A completely obsolete Vodafone GPRS data card. I had it for evaluation, and when the new vodafone 3G data card arrived naturally, I put the old one aside. But luck! - I put it in my pocket. And when I found the 3G card didn't work here in Taiwan, I thought: "I'll just give the old one a try..." ...it worked...!

It sounds like the World Trade Centre still doesn't have air conditioning. The only exhibition venue more uncomfortable for exhibitors (and journos) than Earls Court in the Summer.
Though at least one can gently melt in the bar at the Grand Hyatt next door.
Did you sell timeshare on your Vodaphone to others, or just smugly file your copy? :-)

No! Sasser uses the MS04-011 hole from April 13th, not the MS03-039 one. http://www.microsoft.com/security/incident/sasser.asp has the stuff. Get the right patch. It was still stupid, given a live exploit virus making real-world global headlines. But presumably a journalist brought the virus into the show? .

I thought Sasser was propagated over the web, not from hard disks? It could easily be that they didn't correctly identify the virus, and just slammed in all the patches including the one I saw going in.
All working OK, now. But my guess would be that the network was internet-vulnerable, rather than infected by a visiting machine. One reason for that guess: it was virtually impossible to connect your own PC to the network...

http://wel.com/ is telling casual visitors they don't have permission to access /. I think MS03-039 is the (second attempt to) patch against the Blaster worm. Or, rather, the Blaster worm exploits the MS03-039 vulnerability. There is only one thing in the world worse than patching against a virus that first came out nine months ago, and that is, /not/ patching against a virus that first came out nine months ago. Incidentally, if anyone can suggest a way to ensure I think of the brilliantly apposite remark before posting a message, instead of after, ... .
