Matthew Fox's book The Coming of the Cosmic Christ might be of interest to some people on this list.

Fox looks at how early Christians, Eastern Orthodox Fathers & Medieval Catholic Mystics shared a quest to find the Christ which lives within us all, like a "Mirror of God."

He looks for a paradigm shift in Christianity, a change from how we seek personal salvation to realizing that there is divinity within us all.

Instead of searching for the historical Jesus, he suggests that we discover the "Cosmic Christ" which has a connection to ultimate knowledge.

On June 15, jerriais@bolshie.co.uk pointed out that Matthew Fox's views are
Essentially Gnosticism. I think the book has been mentioned in some of the Yahoo Gnostic groups.
Thanks, Jerriais, for your point. Yes, I found this book discussed on one of the Gnostic lists.

I Know What the Bible Means

A father was approached by his small son, who told him proudly, "I know what the Bible means!" His father smiled and replied, "What do you mean, you 'know' what the Bible means?" The son replied, "I do know!"

"Okay," said his father. "So, son, what does the Bible mean?"

"That's easy, Daddy. It stands for 'Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth.'"

At the End

At the end of our life, we ought to be able to look back over it from our deathbed and know somehow the world is a better place because we lived, we loved, we were other-centered, other-focused.

God and sexual identity?

If a crab can be accidentally born with both male and female identity, which exhibits both kinds of behavior and desires ... (see story here or here or here) ...

... and if a dog can accidentally be born with six legs and two penises ... (see story here or here) ...

... then I consider it possible that maybe God's views about sexual identity are not as clear cut as some ministers paint them to be.

I'm sure that God loves the over-sexed dog and that sexually confused crab just as much as She/He/All-That-Is loves single-sex crabs and 'regular' four-legged dogs, and I'm sure that God loves people who are not the same as us just as much as He/She/Infinite-All loves me and you.

With all of the recent news about religious suppression in the U.S. Military Academy, I thought that some of you might be interested in this military website (Royal Military College of Canada) that shows openness to all religious points of view:

http://www.rmc.ca/military/chaplains/interfaith2002/prayers_e.htm

Points of view include: Native American, Buddhism, Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Sikhism, and Zoroastrianism

I enjoyed seeing how similar some of the beliefs really appear to be.

Rv. John Amazing, do you really believe that God loves everyone? Or, is this just a catchy phrase you like to use? Do you think God loves the Freak that kidnapped the 9 year old Lunsford girl, from Florida, and then repeatedly raped her, and after several days of torturing this little girl, threw her into a trash bag, and then buried her alive?

God Loves Everyone?

Yes, BBQ, I believe that God even loves that criminal, in spite of the fact that I also believe that the justice system needs to deal with that perpetrator.

Do I believe that he's going to heaven? Yes, with a proviso ...

I believe that there are some souls on Earth who have a LOT of work to do before they get to the same Heaven that other souls get to with a lot less work.

For example, I believe that Mother Theresa got to heaven a lot quicker than it might take for me to get there. Perhaps I have some lessons that I haven't learned in this life that it will take another life for?

And perhaps the "freak" that you mention needs even more lives than I might need before he makes it.

I believe that even the Osama's and Adolf's of this Earth will eventually make it to the same place that I will eventually reach.

In the case of the person that you mention, I believe that before he makes it to heaven, he will have to experience being on the receiving end of his behavior before he'll be allowed to reach full fellowship with others in Heaven. In other words, he will have to experience the hell that he created for others before he can reach the heaven.

I believe that God will allow him to experience the hell that he created for himself specifically because God Loves him just as much as he loves me and you.

One of the mailing lists that I subscribe to is A Spirit's Journey. It is an American Indian list. The reason I subscribe is because I enjoy receiving the daily "Elder's Meditation" message. It starts with a quote, continues with a short paragraph discussing the quote, and finishes with a short prayer.

Here is yesterday's meditation:

Elder's Meditation of the Day - June 24

"Believing people can soar beyond ordinary life."

--Fools Crow, LAKOTA

We are created by God to be vision people. First we set the goal and then we see. If we create within ourselves a picture or vision and we hold that picture or vision in our mind, whatever we picture will show up in our reality. If we can see ourselves being educated, then schools and teachers will show up in our lives. If we picture in our mind a positive, spiritual person to be in our lives, we will attract this type of person in our relationships. How big can our dreams be?
Great Spirit, let my visions today be Your vision.
Put within me a vision of the being you would have me be.
Then help me to keep the vision in my mind.

Yesterday's "quote" could be read two different ways, both of which can be true, if it speaks as true to you. (In other words, I believe both readings to be true, but I don't believe that everyone will agree with me.)

Here is that quote again:

"Believing people can soar beyond ordinary life."

ONE

"Believing people" can be a noun phrase, making "believing" a kind of adjective (sorry, Mrs. A, I can't remember what you told me to call it):

If you are a "believing person", you can soar beyond ordinary life.

TWO

"Believing" could be a verb that describes what the unnamed subject of the sentence might be doing.

In other words, some people may believe that other people can soar beyond their ordinary lives.

*****

I assume the truer translation of the original quote is the first one with believing an adjective, part of the subject "Believing people" rather than the second in which believing is a verb describing what the unnamed subject is doing.

Another of the mailing lists that I subscribe to is Beliefnet Hindu Wisdom, one of several several Daily Inspiration lists they operate.

Here is a quote from today's newsletter:
If you could give up thoughts, you will right here and now attain the realization of oneness with all.

And here's a quote from Beliefnet Buddhist Wisdom, another Daily Inspiration beliefnet list:
One of his followers urged the Buddha to perform a miracle in order to attract some nonbelievers. The Buddha replied:

"I detest and will not undertake the so-called miracles of magic power and divination. I and my followers attract non-believers only by the miracle of truth."

-Digha Nikaya
