Sandy, I was reading one of Carol's postings on another site inre: turning
65 and Part D (for your husband). Here it is..hope it helps:


If you are over age 65 and on Medicare, you must sign up for a Part D
Medicare Drug Prescription Plan and cannot use the Medco Plan as that
is for people under age 65. ( There is a Medco Medicare RX Drug Plan,
but you must pay monthly for this plan.) If you have a late sign up
for Part D, then you will have a monetary penalty.. Also, UHC will
ASSUME that you have signed up for Medicare Part D and only pay for
the portion of the drugs that they are responsible for after Medicare
pays, leaving you with anywhere from 75-95% of the drug cost. (gulp!)
Once you are signed up with a Part D Plan and after Medicare pays
(since Medicare is now your Primary even with drugs,) complete the
UHC Drug Reimbursement form and send it to the address on the form
along with copies of your original drug prescription and Summary from
your Part D Plan and send to address on the form. UHC is now your
secondary insurance even for drugs. Only the amount that UHC pays
will be applied to your deductible and Out of pocket for the year..
You will be responsible for 20% of the portion that UHC pays, but
once you reach your max. out-of-pocket for the year of $1000 (medical
and drugs combined), UHC will reimburse you directly at 100% of
anything you paid out of pocket for your drugs - the same as medical.
I recommend that you go online at www.medicare.gov , do a plan
comparison and find the cheapest plan. Once you sign up for the plan, they will send you a card in the mail which you should give to your pharmacy before you order your drugs. The pharmacy will bill the Plan directly for the Medicare portion and you will pay the difference which is about
20-25% (UHC portion). Then you will send the drug reimbursement form
to UHC

Sandy, I don't know if Carol reads this message board. I post her emails that she sends out. I know when you go on Medicare you have to get a Plan D. His medco account stops when he turns 65 so make sure he fills all of his prescriptions before then.

According to the latest notice from AAL, if you are one of the f/a's who chose the RPOS option, we have $1M ea,.not $500K per person for the $180. At least, until we reach Medicare. Then, we drop down to the $500K option. Don't know why, just know that's the way it is. Anyone out there know the scoop?

Thanks for this explanation, Peggy...my retirement counselor only gave me a vague explanation about the benefits involved in HealthFirst. He only lit a fire under me to be sure I got that 60 dollars in the mail before I left the airport! Now its 180 but it's a necessary evil, I guess!

By now you should have received the bill for your AA Supplemental Insurance from HealthFirst TPA.
The price has increased from $60 to $180.
When you reach age 65 and go onto Medicare, your regular Blue Cross Ins drops to $50,000 and you are then processed by UHC. The Supplemental Ins kicks in if you use up the $50,000.
This bill must be postmarked by January 31. If you do not pay it, you will loose this insurance with no provisions for reinstatement.

You sure do. Thank goodness I have that policy. My husband's bills are already at $200,000 with Medicare. UHC supplimentary pays whatever medicare doesn't .. I also received the new statement from Health First which is the supplimentary connected with UHC. I paid that bill so fast the ink wasn't dry on the statement yet. If you research you will find that even with the increase it is a deal. My friends pay aprox. $200.00 per month for their coverage.

Does anyone know if we retain this coverage AFTER we go on Medicare?

I don't think I got a benifits enrollment plan to sign anything. I think they stop sending it out after you reach 65.

Yes, I did. Had some warning about it, but doesn't make it anymore palatable. I think they hope that we'll drop the coverage on our own.

Yes, I received mine, but I was aware ahead of time from reading the benefits enrollment summary of the increase. If you wanted to cancel it you had to do so before October 31st by calling the 800 # that was provided. Although it's expensive, my husband and&#A0;I&#A0;opted to keep it. Pat

Addition to Information Regarding Annual Benefits Enrollment for Retirees under age 65:

- Those retirees under age 65 who have qualified for Medicare due to health reasons stay with the Preferred Provider for your state under the RSMP-PPO and it will be your secondary health provider with Medicare being your Primary. Once you turn age 65, you will then switch to UHC as your secondary provider with Medicare being primary.

With all the talk about the company eliminating non-union Retiree Medical,
I
just want to remind people that they've already tried to change APFA's
Retiree Medical from 80/20 to 60/40 without anyone even knowing. I wrote
about it in 2007. APFA's been telling flight attendants who inquire about
the latest announcement that they need not worry because APFA is unionized.
Well, they DO need to worry because there IS NO language in the 2003
Restructuring Part icipation Agreement protecting Retiree Medical. It was
left. AA and AFA have agreed via Side Letter of Agreement to address
Retiree
Medical during negotiations.

Here's what I wrote:

Medical Malpractice | February 3, 2007

As you may have heard, APFA reached another Presidential Grievance
Settlement with AA in January, this one over the company's January 2006
changes to the Retire Health Plan.

In short, the company made changes to the Retiree Medical Benefits Plan
effective January 1, 2006, and made notice of the said changes via JetNet
and Flagship News in September 2005. We, the APFA membership, only became
aware of these changes via a chat board in December 2006, and that was only
because an APFA retiree joined the chat board to inquire about the changes.

At issue is whether retiree medical benefits are contractual or not. The
union's position is that the Retiree Medical Benefits Plan is a contractual
issue and not amendable until negotiations. The company's position is that
the Retiree Medical Benefits Plan is not incorporated into either the 2001
Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) or the 2003 Restructuring
Participation Agreement (RPA).

Though this Settlement might seem like the first real victory for APFA
since
the Hutto-Blake Administration assumed office in 2004, the Settlement
itself
leaves some very important questions unanswered: mainly, why is the company
claiming that the Retiree Medical Benefits Plan is non-contractual? What
happened to the language? We know it existed, so where did it go?

The company claims that:

"...there has been no contractual violation in this matter. Attachment K of
the 2003 RPA incorporated only the "Standard Medical and Dental Plan for
Flight Attendants" into Article 35 of the CBA. It did not incorporate the
Retiree Medical Plan...."

The RPA Letter of Agreement signed by Jeff Bott and witnessed by Lenny
Aurigemma, Susan M. French, Patt A. Gibbs Patrick Hancock and Becky Kroll
states:

"It is hereby mutually agreed that the Standard Medical and Dental Plan for
Flight Attendants shall be incorporated into Article 35 of the Collective
Bargaining Agreement...."

As you can see, the word "Retiree" is not mentioned, which leads me to
believe that the company's assertion is correct.

So what happened? What happened to the language protecting Retiree Medical
Benefits? We know that there was language. It read like this in 1995:

"The Health Benefit Plan for retirees, other than Article 30 retirees and
those flight attendants who elect to take Appendix T, shall be the retiree
health plan for pilot employees of American Airlines represented by the
Allied Pilots Association ("Pilot Retiree Plan"). This shall include any
changes, modification and/or amendments to the Pilot Retiree Plan,
including
changes, modifications and/or amendments to contributions made by retired
pilots."

As you can see, the=2 01995 language regarding the Retiree Medical Benefits
Plan for flight attendants had clear language; it was tied directly to the
Pilot's Retiree Plan. But in 2001 APFA loosened the language when it
incorporated prefunding and tied the plan to the Ground Workers Retiree
Plan. The 2001 language reads:

"Effective January 1, 2002. Flight Attendants will participate in
American's
prefunding program under the terms and conditions in effect for American's
ground personnel as of June 30, 2001, whereby employees contribute toward
the cost of Retiree Medical Plan coverage during their active status.
Flight
Attendants who elect not to prefund will not be eligible for Retiree
Medical
Plan coverage at retirement."

What I personally find so fascinating about this issue, more than the
mystery surrounding the missing contract language, is how APFA portrayed
the
2003 RPA Medical Benefits Changes as an improvement over anything we
previously had. Yes, even though flight attendants were going to have to
continue prefunding their Retiree Benefits with income that was greatly
reduced by the pay cuts imposed on them against their NO vote of April 15,
2003, Jeff Bott, former APFA VP, considered this an improvement.

So was this another empty bAAg???

When we consider that AA and APFA " agree to reserve their respective
positions...with respect to the question of whether the Retiree Standard
Medical Plan was incorporated into the CBA in the RPA..." (in other words,
agree to disagree) and " agree to attempt to resolve this question during
the next round of collective bargaining," (in other words, waste valuable
resources renegotiating the blunder) I would have to say yes‹absolutely.

What we do know about the 2003 changes comes from an article Jeff Bott
wrote
in Skyword. Mr. Bott wrote:

"The collaboration between seasoned APFA representatives and experts of the
highest caliber paid off. We put together a proposal that gave the company
$8 million in savings for 2004, no more, no less, and provided significant
benefits for flight attendants."

Seasoned reps??? Experts of the highest caliber??? If these reps were so
seasoned, how then did the language protecting retiree medical benefits
disappear? I believe the only thing accurate about this statement is the
fact that APFA "gave" the company millions in savings.

Mr. Bott continues:

"GIVING CREDIT WHERE CREDIT IS DUE"

I put together what I consider a dream team to work with me on this
project.
I would like to thank them publicly for the participation, commitment, and
for sharing their collective knowledge and wisdom: Susan French, Patt
Gibbs,
Patrick Hancock, and Becky Kroll. We could not have put this deal together
without the support and participation of the Division Representatives: Lori
Bassani, Jeff Crecelius, Brett Durkin, Greg Hildreth, Leslie Mayo and Linda
Richardson. Thanks also to Executive committ ee member Lenny Aurigemma and
Tony Leonhardt (LAX).

I could say something here, but I believe the words "dream team" say it
all;
rather than hiring professionals to assist us, APFA Leadership once again
chose to save money by using flight attendants.

When will we ever learn‹we get what you pay for? Every time APFA opts to
save money by not hiring professionals, the APFA membership pays for it and
pays dearly. We ALWAYS get the short end of the stick.

We we consider that 800 or so members of AMR's senior management team are
going to be sharing approximately $210,000,000 in bonuses come April,
there's no denying that the flight attendants were almost duped. I say
"almost" because we said NO on 4/15/03. Even without professionals, the
flight attendants could see the writing on the wall. And so did our union
leadership. They knew about the bonus plans back in 2003. And because of
their unwillingness to hire any professionals, AMR execs are going to be
receiving lavish bonuses for TAKING money rather than MAKING money.

Why is this stuff even important to us? I answer this question by asking
this: Do flight attendants want the very people who gave it all away
negotiating for them in the future? Remember, Tommie Hutto-Blake's campaign
slogan was "He gave it away; We want it back." So far, three years later,
Ms
Hutto-Blake hasn't gotten us anything back that didn't cost us something
else.

I am reading everything I can find on the new changes to the non-union retirees effective 1/1/2010 and so far everything that Carole Peck, DFW said in the following email is correct. I have also talked to the owner of Golden Wings and asked about how these changes are going to affect those non-union members who elected Golden Wings Supp. Medical when they retired. He said that they are still in talks regarding this and do not know what they are going to do just yet. Since the changes are not in effect until January, Golden Wings has some time to come up with a solution. I will let you know as soon as I get any information from the owner of Golden Wings as it may affect ALL of us. I suggest, in the meantime, that you do NOT give up your Golden Wings Supp. Medical policy even with the increased premium and annual deductible.. Until this is all straightened out and we see how negotiations go for Union members regarding retiree medical, I think this $600,000 worth of extra Medical coverage with Golden Wings is a good to have. I will resend the detailed info on renewing your Golden Wings Supp. Medical which is due on October 1, 2009 for the year 2010. There is a 30 day GRACE period to get your check in which will end on October 31, 2009.

Like you, I was under the impression that I had a "contract" with AA for free standard retiree medical and the right to purchase supplemental insurance. I am now somewhat skeptical. If the APFA negotiating committee chooses to give our medical insurance away I suspect there is nothing we can do about it. If Patrick Hancock sees this, perhaps he could weigh in with an opinion ?

What we stand to lose (after age 65) is the $50,000 UHC secondary insurance and the Health First supplemental. I understand from Carol B. that "Golden Wings" is still undecided as to their course of action.

Hi Everyone!

Below are the details regarding the annual billing for Golden Wings Supp. Medical Insurance for retirees. In light of all that is happening with the AA non-union retirees losing their pre-funded AA $50K and pre-funded Supp. Medical $500,000 without electing to now PAY for this coverage when they go on Medicare as of 1/1/2010, and the Company now wanting Union members to do the same, I suggest that you do NOT drop your Golden Wings Supp. Medical policy even with the increased premium and deductible. APFA is in negotiations regarding these retiree medical issues, so let your opinions be heard by sending an email to negotiate08@apfa.org . We cannot lose these pre-funded benefits! Once retired, it is hard enough making ends meet on a fixed income without having to PAY for our secondary coverage from AA after qualifying for Medicare!

I have spoken to the owner of Golden Wings and asked how they are going to handle those non-union members who elected the Golden Wings Supp. Medical Insurance coverage when they retired, as now Union members may be facing the same surmise He said that they are still in talks regarding this and will have a solution by the time these changes go into effect on 1/1/2010 for the non-union members. As soon as Golden Wings has come up with a solution, I will let you know. In the meantime, I suggest you get your check to Golden Wings to cover the annual bill for Golden Wings Supp. Medical for 2010. It is due on Oct. 1, 2009, but there is a 30 day GRACE period which ends on Oct., 31, 2009. In my opinion, the extra $600,000 worth of medical coverage from Golden Wings is good to have especially since we do not know the outcome of the APFA negotiations regarding our retiree medical.

Hi Everyone

The annual billing for the Retirees Golden Wings Supplemental (Medical) Insurance Plan has been sent out. ( I received mine yesterday, so watch for it in the mail) You will only get this billing if you elected to sign up for this insurance within 31 days of your retirement date. You cannot sign up after that time frame.

Here are the particulars:

There is another increase of $90 for the year 2010 due to Healthcare costs skyrocketing as well as retirees maxing out their $50,000 American Airlines Coverage at an alarming rate.

Cost per person: $540 for the year 2010
Due Date: October 1, 2009 with a 30 day GRACE PERIOD after which you will forfeit your policy
Send: Check or money order payable to Golden Wings Supplemental Insurance Plan and mail to this address:

Be certain to add your Retiree ID Number and Policy Number on your check and send it along with your payment stub in the envelope provided. Remember that if you elect to drop this coverage and you signed up for the Golden Wings Dental Plan, you will lose that dental coverage as you must be a part of the Medical Plan to keep your Dental Plan coverage.

I know that this is a lot of money to put out at one time, but it is only $45 a month per person for an extra $600,000 worth of extra medical insurance, not to mention that their Dental Plan which is underwritten by Cigna is excellent and most inexpensive coverage. To date, there are no plans that I know of where we could make monthly payments which would be easier for all of us! Any questions, call Golden Wings at 1-800-521-2510

The following is an email from Jill Frank Smoak who is a very bright lady and someone whose opinion I respect. She voices her thoughts on the possibility of losing our retiree medical in great detail, but she is NOT saying it WILL happen. May I reiterate the necessity to write an email to the negotiating team and let them know how you feel about this and any other issue on the table at negotiate08@apfa.org . Additionally, Golden Wings is sending out a survey to everyone asking if you are part of the non-union group who are subject to changes to their retiree medical effective 1/1/2010. Do NOT respond to this letter if you are not a part of this group. They are just trying to get a count of how many people are involved so that they can make a decision on how to handle this group.
 
All of this is alarming and we should be prepared, but don't become overwhelmed by anticipation. To quote a dear friend, "the worst determent to happiness is anticipation." Therefore, stay informed by visiting www.APFA.org , get involved, write your emails but stay optimistic. The Company is probably gloating over the chaos they have created. Let them see our strength.

I think I will call TPA and see if AA decides to dump the retirees if we would still be covered with an additional fee, just like GW's. I would be willing to pay a little more since I have no other choice and no one would cover my husband now.

Hi all: In response to Jill's msg and others re: Golden Wings. Several years ago when AA was tettering, I called Golden Wings and asked what would happen if AA went under, would I lose my supplemental with G.W. and the man said no but that the premium would probably go up. Of course, I do not have the person's name nor do I have that in writing but I think that I will give them a call this next week and see what they say then I will repost a msg.

I have good news and bad news regarding the comments below. Retirement consists of two categories: Pension and Benefits. The scenario described (contractual changes) regarding pension is accurate - nothing short of a bankruptcy can alter the pension one is receiving (or has accrued for active people) and then there is PBGC protection which is generally sufficient to cover a FA pension.
 
Health benefits do not have the same protection. I do not think Laura and our team will give up without a fight here but - IF APFA negotiates a change in retiree coverage with APFA it could easily apply to those of us who are already out here. The groups who are currently impacted DID pre-fund, but they gave it up in the consensual rape of benefits in 2003. We (APFA) believed that prefunding would hold the line for us, but then in 2007 AA tried to implement changes in retiree coverage on the premise that although we had negotiated coverage there was no guarantee that it would be the remain the same as it had been. We disputed it and there was agreement to make the issue part of bargaining. So, our health coverage is very much on the table, and yes, it could apply to those of us who have already retired.
 
They (APFA) could also attempt to 'grandfather' those who are retired (like a backwards B scale) but I don't know if they would be successful since AA has imposed it upon the already retired in the other groups. The imposed change applies to over 65 who have Medicare - we are already required to pick up Medicare A, B and D when we turn 65 (increasing monthly costs to about $200+ per person) and now they are trying to get us to be responsible for any additional coverage. Since the AA coverage is reduced to $50,000 that is not a huge amount of coverage, I suspect they were spending a gigantic amount administering this, and they wish to be done with that relationship (think of all the HR people they won't need if we each fall off the books at 65). In a perfect world they are negotiating with UHC to create a policy that will be inexpensive, then the Supplemental would remain in place, because without some coverage I'm afraid that the supplemental (and possibly Golden Wings) will no longer cover us since they are both predicated on the theory that you have AA coverage.
 
So, I am very concerned, I realize that my comments above sound like I think it may happen, I don't necessarily think that, BUT if we ended up in arbitration like we did after the strike in 1993 I see this as the trend in the country, plus there does seem to be a move away from corporate sponsored benefits. So, I am closely watching and hoping that we will hold on but it is not a guarantee.

I wanted to share with Barbara Fritsch and everyone the value and importance of retaining our retiree benefits, including supplemental. My husband was a retired pilot with AA when he found out he had a malignant tumor. He was already Medicare age. His treatment took almost 8 months and fortunately, he is now cancer free. That was 2 years ago and we are just now finishing up on insurance coverage. He exhausted his lifetime benefit with UHC during this process and although Medicare covered quite a bit, he still had to use his Healthfirst supplemental policy to cover quite substantial co-pays. Also, in this whole process, I found out that there was some dental and eye coverage for me as his spouse on his Healthfirst policy!

This is a very disturbing point in time for all active AND retired f/a's. I urge EVERYONE to express their outrage towards AA through our union. Send your email to APFA NOW! And, Barbara, please don't give up hope......together we will fight this.....for your husband AND for all of us.

How sad to even think the supplemental insurance is even being considered. My husband is very sick with stomach cancer and I am counting on the secondary, United Healthcare, and TPA Supplemental to get us through all of the Bills. If this goes through would those already counting on this additional insurance be cancelled as well. We are going to need this coverage very soon. The Bills are mounting, and medicare doesn't cover everything.

I would guess that everyone who carries Wings Supplemental Insurance has received their premium bill with its increase to $540. Do not cancel this insurance due to the raise in price.

Let me explain. There was some information going around about our Retiree Insurance and it triggered a memory for me from the Union Book of the 2001 Contract.. It took me awhile to get around to tracking it down, but I finally did. I then talked with Patrick Hancock who is the Retirement specialist for APFA.
I asked if Retiree Insurance was on the negotiation table and he said20yes. He is hopeful that it will not be a part of the contract, and we will stay status quo as now.

This is what American has presented in negotiations. Right now our Retiree Medical under United Health Care is free, as you pre funded while active. What they want now is to cut out some of the cost of Health Insurance by cutting anyone at 65 and over out of the plan. They will make sure that everyone that wanted it would get Medigap coverage. Those under 65 would pay a portion of the premium until age 65 then go on the Medigap.

If you are also carrying TPA Health First Supplemental ( the $60 per year $500,000 coverage) that kicks in when your $50,000 is used would also be gone as it is held by American Airlines.

So for the time being until the contract has been resolved hopefully without the cutback, keep your Wings supplemental coverage to Medicare in effect.

Also the PBGC web site is very informative as to our protection of retirement pay benefits...

I don't mean to be a "scare baby", but I was told today that there are 20 companies on a possible Chapter 11 List, and American was there. Upper Management enjoys their bonuses way to much to claim bankruptcy so I am hoping this is wrong.

Many of you may already have this information, but I felt it=2 0was important to pass on.

APFA is going back into negotiations with the company with one of the issues on the table being retiree medical. The Company wants the Union to agree to the same terms and conditions as the non-union retirees age 65 and older or once on Medicare who will now pay 25% for that insurance effective Jan. 1, 2010.
They also are losing their Supplemental Medical once on Medicare.
 
This is the time to make your voices heard as to what is important to you during these negotiations. Making us pay 25% of our Retiree Medical is NOT something we want to see especially when on a fixed income. Go to www.APFA.org ornegotiate@apfa.org and let your opinions be heard. All Active F/A's will be retirees one day. Making ends meet is not easy as there is no picking up an extra trip! The Union also welcomes retiree comments!

A. CONTENTS OF LETTER DATED 7/29/2009 FROM AMR, MANAGING DIRECTOR HUMAN RESOURCES DAVID LEVINE

 

 2: BENEFIT PAYMENT OPTIONS

                      OPTIONAL FORMS OF BENEFIT (Page 18)

 

Add the following new section immediately following the last paragraph of the "optional Formal of Benefit" section on Page 18.

 

Benefit Payment Restrictions

The Pension Protection Act of 2006 imposes benefit restrictions on plans that do not meet certain funding requirements. If the Plan is between 60% and 80% funded, the level income options will be limited to the lesser of: 50% of the amount you could have received if the restrictions were not in place, or the present value of the maximum PBGC benefit at your current age. If the Plan is less than 60% funded, the level income options will not be available as payment options. In addition no further benefit accruals will be allowed. If the Company is in bankruptcy and the Plan is less that 100% funded the level income options will not be available as payment options.

 

II. EXPLANATION OF PENSION STATEMENT

 

A. On a typical pension estimate in the section titled “Estimated Monthly Benefit” there are over 20 different numbers which represent possible monthly payments. These various numbers represent calculations done in 5 categories of benefit. When you retire you select ONE of these calculations for your monthly pension benefit.

 

B. The categories:

            1. Lifetime Annuity – the basic calculation done using the formula in Article 36 – you would receive this amount every month for the rest of your life

            2. Joint & Survivor Annuity – you supply the birth date and gender of the person you wish to have as a beneficiary, your monthly amount is reduced but if you die your named beneficiary receives a payment for the remainder of their life. There are three possibilities here, 50%, 75% and 100% - which represents the amount your beneficiary would receive.

            3. Guaranteed Period Certain – also has a beneficiary but not dependent upon their age or gender. This pays you forever or for a period of time from your retirement date should you pass away.

            4. Joint and Survivor pop Up Option – Same concept as b above but extra protection for retiree in that if beneficiary passes away monthly payment “pop’s back” to the lifetime annuity (the amount you would have received if you hadn’t named a beneficiary). Only the flight attendant group has this and it is an excellent protection.

 

NOTE FROM JILL FRANK SMOAK – NONE OF THE PENSION CHOICES DESCRIBED ABOVE ARE IMPACTED BY THE COMMUNICATION RECEIVED FROM AMR REGARDING THE “BENEFIT PAYMENT RESTRICTIONS”.

 

            5. Level Income Option – this option allows a retiree to "borrow" money from the pension fund by taking more benefit until either age 62 or full Social Security age. Then, at the age that was indicated when you began taking your pension, your benefit is reduced to the amount that was stated on the estimate.

 

III. DISCUSSION BY JILL FRANK SMOAK

 

A. This CHOICE of benefit election is way to start out your retirement with the amount of money that you will have in total once you become eligible for Social Security. The money comes as an ‘advance’ from the Pension Trust – based upon the projection that it will get it back by paying you a lesser benefit for the rest of your life. If you live past age 72, generally you end up getting less money during your lifetime from this option.

 

B. Since my retirement in October 2006 I have been consulting with many AA Flight Attendants on an individual basis regarding their retirement planning and choices. I have never recommended this option for a variety of reasons; including the fact that the PBGC does not and never did recognize this as an option and would recalculate a benefit that was being paid using this formula should our Plan ever be taken over by them.

 

C. It makes total sense that people would not be allowed to select this if our Trust Fund was severely underfunded; this is an accelerated drain on funds when they are needed to retain stability in the Trust. The communications from AMR Human Resources DOES NOT in any way impact the two primary choices from our plan: the Lifetime Annuity and Joint and Survivor Annuity.

 

D. Where it says "In addition no further accruals would be allowed" I beleive it is a protection in that what each of us had accrued as of that date would remain as our benefit, subject to PBGC maximums. Since AMR has continued to fund our Plan, if the funding goes below 60% we would probably be looking at broader problems, possible/probable bankruptcy and a PBGC takeover. In any of those situations accrual is terminated.

 

E. Generally the FA pensions are covered by the PBGC maximums - if you wish to confirm this go to the web site: PBGC.gov. Review "What the PBGC Guarantees" then "Maximum Monthly Guarantee Tables". Since there is a new table each year you can only use this as a guide, but IF our plan were to go to the PBGC in 2009 this is what would be allowed if you were already in benefit. If you were still working, this would be the table used but it would be the age you were when you actually commenced benefit.

Hi Everyone! I'm posting an email from HR (Annette) that addresses our concerns inre our pension. According to her (please read the small print of her email) it does NOT apply to us because we are already retired.

Following is the verbiage that was included in the Flight Attendant SMM recently sent out that is causing the questions:

Can anyone read into the Human Resorces letter we got regarding the pension plan? I thought AAL fully funded the pension but it sounds like they are trying to lower it so we will get less or even just half. Would appreciate some input. Thanks to anyone who might know. I just heard from a retired F/A who went on Medicare on June 1, 2009. She sent the following information that I didn't know and will add to the next update of the Retirement Booklet. You might want to jot it down, now, on your personal copy.
The additional information is:

- Medicare Deductible/Out-Of-Pocket Carry-Over : At age 65, all retirees will switch to UHC as their Secondary insurance with Medicare being the Primary insurance. Any amount the retiree/spouse/domestic partner has applied towards their deductible and out-of-pocket for the year with BCBS or Aetna will be carried over and applied to the UHC coverage. However, it will NOT be done automatically. You must call your previous Provider, either BCBS or Aetna, and ask for a letter from them verifying the amounts of what already has been applied (with them) to your deductible and out-of-pocket for the year which should include both you/your spouse/domestic partner. Once you get this letter, make a copy and send it to UHC when it will be applied to UHC's yearly deducible and out-of- pocket. If UHC does not have this letter, they will start your deductible and out-of-pocket all over again from the first bill they receive from your doctor/facility.

- Medicare Effective Date -Age 65: If the retiree's 65th birthday falls on the 1st of the month, your Medicare will become effective on the 1st day of the PREVIOUS month. Example: If your birthday falls on June 1st, your Medicare will become effective on May 1st. If your birthday falls any day from the 2nd of the month to the end of the month, your Medicare will start on the 1st day of the month of your birthday.

I just finished updating the Retirement Booklet effective July 2009 from June of 2008. There is a lot of new information since the addition of the new Health Care Administrators which went into effect in January 2009; Aetna and Blue Cross Blue Shield have been added to UHC for "choices" of Medical providers with stipulations. There were many pages to update so I will highlight some in this email. However, I suggest that you download the attached updated booklet and delete the old one dated June 2008. If you cannot download it from this site, it will be available soon in the permanent files on the LAX-I Baseline. Also, I will be happy to email it to you directly as an email attachment. Here are some highlights:

To All Retirees and Friends of Retirees on Medicare

I recently got an email regarding how our Insurance coordinates with Medicare for Part D Drug Plans.
In the past, I was told incorrectly by someone at AA during an online chat on Jetnet regarding the "Gap" or Donut Hole" and how our insurance pays. I have since verified it using 4 sources, AA, the Union, Jetnet and our insurance company. The following is correct for those who are on Medicare, signed up for a Part D Drug Plan and fall into the gap. Fortunately, the following is in OUR FAVOR!!:

For those on Medicare and signed up with a Part D Drug Plan that has a "Gap" or "Donut Hole", there is no drug coverage during the Gap with Medicare. HOWEVER, our insurance with any of the Administrators will cover the gap and pay at 100% during the Gap, provided the participant has reach ed both the yearly deductible of $150 and their an out-of-pocket maximum for the year of $1000. If the deductible and yearly out of pocket have NOT been reached, you will be responsible for 20% of the cost of your drugs during the Gap and your Administrator will pay 80%. Regardless, the amount that your Administrator pays during the Gap will be applied to your lifetime insurance maximum. Please follow the instructions on the form for Medicare Part D Drug Reimbursement. The form, by Administrator, can be found on Jetnet, (forms)

With respect to Golden Wings Dental, the only way to sign-up if you miss the initial opportunity at retirement is to wait 'til the company has open enrollment. No date scheduled for that right now. In addition, you have to already be a Golden Wings participant. Anyone who is already participating but not on the Dental plan will be contacted by them. Sam Velez

This info is correct....


Part A and Part B (Hospital, Part A, Doctors, Facilities, Part B) - Retiree Medical acts as a secondary to Medicare. What this means is that your medical coverage with AA will pick up if Medicare should fall short of the 80% coverage amount leaving your responsibility at 20%. Under the Standard Retiree Medical Plan, once the individual meets their out-of-pocket maximum of $1000, the UHC plan will cover 100% after Medicare's coverage. Although most recipients of Medicare are aged 65 or better, there are some instances where there has been a disability award from the Social Security Administration that makes one eligible for Medicare; again, the benefit woks the same.
Part D (Medicare Drug Prescription Provider that you have chosen) - The retiree is responsible for 20% of the bill until they reach the "donut hole" of $2499 at which time UHC will pay 100% of the remainder of the bill after your Part D Provider had paid their portion. How it works is that you will fill prescriptions and pay the total cost up front. (100% of prescription cost). Then you will receive a Part D Explanation of Medicare Benefits (EOMB) from your chosen Part D Provider (PDP) that states that you have met the initail coverage limit for the plan year.You should forward this paperwork along with along with the Part D claim form AND your prescription receipts to UHC (the Plan Administrator) for payment to reimburse your eligible out-of-pocket expenses for consideration of any additional reimbursement. The Retiree Medical plan administrator (UHC) will provide reimbursement directly to you as the plan participant. You may receive reimbursement via check or convenient direct deposit into your bank account. You may enroll for direct deposit of reimbursements at www.myuhc.com . Please review the Medicare Part D article on Jetnet, detailing how the Retiree Medical Plan coordinates with Medicare Part D.

I don't know if you all get the AARP magazine but I read a helpful money saving hint in it. They suggest that when you get a prescription that is generic from your MD to not file it under part D if your local pharmacy has the $4.00 for generics program. Just pay the $4 separately. When you file under part D apparently they say the drug is worth more and that goes against your part D deductible.

The problem is and I think this is true with most plans,&#A0; Initially, They cover minor expenses UNTIL you have been with them 1 year, then they cover Major procedures, Caps, Crowns, Root canals, etc.etc. 80/20..... So Its important to get an insurance soon if you need work on your teeth!!!! Only if you want to keep them!!!!Ha-Ha!!!! I am also looking for vision coverage? Any ideas for that??? For those of us who are paying $60 a year for health ins with AA (retirees)--have you noticed that it is referred to as "supplemental insurance"?? If so, it should pay for items which the "secondary" insurance doesn't, right?

At this point, BCBS has to contact the providers for a refund and have
 them bill Medicare as the Primary first before they will pay their portion of the bill. .
  
- Some retirees who are UNDER age 65, but their spouses are over
age 65 are having trouble getting Medicare to pay as their Primary for
 their Medicare eligible spouse Neither BCBS or Medicare can decide
 who is Primary so doctor bills are not getting paid. Everything is being
sent round and round. Now what?
  
- F/A's who have retired before age 65 and will turn age 65 during the
 year they retire must be advised that they should remain with their
current Administrator and will NOT start UHC as their secondary
insurance until their 65th birthday when Medicare starts. Otherwise,
they may end up PAYING for their insurance if UHC is not the
Preferred Administrator for their state.
  
- AA is not sending the retiree an advisory letter of "change of Administrators"
 a month in advance of the retiree's 65th birthday as they said they
 would. Also, this information regarding the 65th is delayed getting
to UHC and health cards are not being sent unless the participant
requests it. The old UHC card still has the correct information on it,
 but many have thrown their old UHC cards away. They cannot pull
 up a temporary card since UHC does not have them in the system yet.
  
- Retirees who will turn age 65 during the year should not file the
Crossover Form until they are in the UHC system. If they send it
ahead of their 65th birthday, the form will be returned stating that
they are not a UHC member. They should wait to file the Crossover
 form until they are age 65 and call UHC be sure that they are
 in the UHC system

More on retiring: Bonnie, i retired last May at 62. Got to take advantage of these good years while we are young and healthy..ha, ha. I flew 41 years and get around $1300 from SS and that combined with the pension serves me just fine. The last 14 months i have been going back and forth to Florida, in two month shifs, to help take care of my 93 year old dad. Heading that way here in the next two weeks. Another added message to Bonnie about Social Security..... I also worked for AAL for 40 years, Flew well over the 85 Hours a month and I get close to $1600&#A0; from S.S. The raise was almost $100 more a month that had previously stated on my yearly form they send. Now you can also choose to have taxes taken out ( A forced savings) All this is well explained in the booklet they send . I also had scheduled a one on one telephone call with a social security agent. We did all the "Paperwork" on the phone, ( It was over 30 minutes) If you had been married and divorced, (A few times like me~~Ha-Ha!) you have to provide dates and proof of the marraiges and divorces...... I did take it early at "62", They say it would take 10 to 12 years to make up the difference if you waited till age 65 or 66 for the full benefit. All in all, I am very pleased! This is for Bonnie Balch. Hi Bonnie. You receive a statement once a year from Social Security. It usually comes a few months before your birthday. The statement indicates the amount of money you would recieve at 62. It also shows you how many years you would have to wait to receive full SS. SS is calculated by the government on how much you made from the first year you started working, until the last year. It varies for all of us. Hope that helps you. Plus, we are getting a small raise this month from SS. They do that every so often.

Please be advised that the Medical Claims Forms for the new Administrators,
 Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas (BCBS) and Aetna are now available on Jetnet.
To copy and print these forms, go to the Jetnet Home Page, then:

 - Click on Benefits on top bar, then
- Click on Forms and Guides on left bar, then
- Click on Health and Welfare on left bar, then
- Scroll down to Medical Forms and click on appropriate Administrator's
 Medical form to view/print form
 
Remember: Eligible family members have the same Administrator as
 you as the plan does NOT split family members between Administrators.
 
Retirees and Eligible Family Members on Medicare AGE 65 AND OLDER
 
 - NO CHANGES - Your Administrator is United Health Care (UHC). If you
 have filed a Medicare Crossover Form, it will continue to be in effect.
If you have not filed a Medicare Crossover Form and wish to do so,
 it is available on Jetnet now. Also, the Medicare Part D Prescription Drug
 Reimbursement Form for UHC is available on Jetnet for you to view/print.

Retirees and Eligible Family Members on Medicare UNDER AGE 65:
The following forms will be available On Jetnet sometime this month,
]January, 2009, for the new Administrators, BCBS and Aetna.
Follow the links above to check for these forms and scroll down to view/print them:
 
- Medicare Crossover Form (For Part B): If you have a new
Administrator other than UHC, you must file a new Crossover
 form for the Administrator you have selected which will enable
 Medicare to send their copy of payment directly to your
 Administrator for the secondary payment to be made..
Your portion of the bill will then be sent to you by your doctor
 or Part B facility. (Much easier for you as it will alleviate extra paperwork)
 
- Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Reimbursement Form: If you
 have a new Administrator other than UHC, you must use the
appropriate Administrator's form for drug reimbursement after
 Medicare pays. Follow the instructions on the form as it will be
sent back to you if required information is missing. There is
NO Crossover form for Part D Prescription Drug Reimbursement;
therefore, you must submit this form to receive reimbursement.

Just got off the phone with Carolyn Crane - Lou just passed away
this morning peacefully while sitting in his favorite chair at home in
Inverness. What a shock-- they introduced Al and I. No details as
yet. Carolyn's going to the funeral home tomorrow. Please pray for
the Crane's. She's always been so thoughtful and considerate of others
and together they were the greatest hosts in the world. His smile and
good humor will be so missed.

  Barbara Jenkins, aka JENKS, has spent 4 days in the hospital with a broken ankle. She lives alone in a Chicago suburb but I don't know where she lives. She is unable to get to her computer because it is on the top floor of her house and she can not walk on her foot. If anyone knows her address, please post it so I can write to her. Also, if anyone in Chicago lives near her, please visit to see if she needs help. She has about 20 screws and 3 titanuim plates embedded in her ankle and the doctor is hoping this will work. Does anyone have more info???

Hi Everyone!
The Benefits Enrollment begins tomorrow, October 1, 2008 through October 31,
2008 for commencement on January 1, 2009. There are some choices to consider
so please review the information available on Jetnet, look through the
explanations in the Life Matters booklet which is coming in the mail or attend a
Road Show in your area. If you are under age 65 and do NOT do an enrollment,
you will default to the Health Care Administrator for the state in which you
live. If you, meaning the employee or retiree,are over age 65, UHC will
continue to be your secondary Health Care Administrator after Medicare. Most of the
changes are for people under age 65.
I have just returned from the Benefits Enrollment Road Show here in Los
Angeles. The following are a few points that I had clarified with one of the
reps. from AA HR Services:

- If under age 65, you, meaning the employee or retiree under age 65 who are
enrolled in the Standard Medical Plan or Retiree Standard Medical Plan, you
will change to the preferred Health Care Administrator for the state where
you live. You can find the Administer for your state on Jetnet by following
the prompts. You/your spouse/qualified dependant must stay with the same
Administrator. American Airlines does NOT split Administrators. This also includes
anyone who has qualified for Medicare.

- If you are under age 65 and currently have the POS Plan or the Retiree POS
Plan for you/your spouse/domestic partner or qualified dependant, then you
have a CHOICE of any of the Health Care Providers: Blue Cross-Blue Shield,
Aetna or UHC. You and your spouse/domestic partner/qualified dependant must
choose the same=2 0Heath Care Administrator.

- There are NO changes or restrictions or disqualification for a
pre-existing conditions if you are changing to another Administrator other than UHC .

- Deductibles and out-of-pocket maximums remain the same.

- There are no changes to dental as it remains with Met-Life

- If you require a new Health Care Administrator card, you will receive it
after enrollment and prior to Jan. 1, 2009 or you can print a temporary card by
going to the wed site of the company you chose until you get your permanent
card in the mail.

- To determine what the American Airlines Health Benefits provide, go to
Jetnet, then click on Benefits, then forms and guides, followed by Summary Plan
Description. This will encompass all Health Care Administrators.

- You can only change to a administrator during Benefits Enrollment in
October or when you are filing a Life Event

- It is advisable to check with your doctors, hospitals and facilities to
check if they are a Network Provider with the Health Care Administrator you
have. If not, be prepared to billed for an out-of-network co-pay. However, that
amount will be applied to your out-of pocket maximum for the year.

- If you and your spouse/domestic partner both work for American Airlines,
you can have different Plans and Administra tors.

- RETIREES SPECFIC INFORMATION
- You may change from the Retiree Standard Medical Plan to the
Retiree POS Plan during in benefits enrollment BUT, keep in mind that you must pay
monthly for the RPOS Plan and once you change to the RPOS Plan, you will
NEVER have the opportunity to change back to the RSMP which is the only plan
that American Airlines recognizes as the plan you pre-funded for.

- Medicare Information.- IMPORTANT - Both the RSMP and the RPOS Plan
- If you, as the retiree are under age 65 and your spouse/domestic partner
is on Medicare, he/she will follow you and have the SAME secondary Health Care
Provider after Medicare. Once you, as the retiree, reach age 65, then BOTH
you and your spouse/domestic partner will switch to UHC regardless of what
state you live in. HR Services will advise you of these changes once you, the
retiree, near your 65th birthday. American Airlines does NOT split the
Administrators; dependants follow you, as the retiree.

- If you are Medicare Qualified due to illness, you will stay with
UHC and your spouse/qualified dependents will also stay with UHC as American
Airlines does NOT split the Health Care Administrators. Your spouse/domestic
partner/qualified dependants follow you..

=2 0 - HR Services will provide information at a later date as to doing a
NEW Medicare Crossover Form for a different Health Care Administrator as the
only one on file right now is with UHC. The Crossover Form is found on
Jetnet, forms, and enables your Health Care Administrator to be billed directly
from Medicare for payment of their portion of the bill. There is no crossover
form for Part D Prescription Drug Plan The UHC reimbursement form can be found
on Jetnet.

       He was a ladies' man & he was a men's man, both gravated to him because of his charisma, his honesty, his forthrightness, his realness & his humanitarianism.
       He accepted everyone at face value, rarely judging anyone, & always looking out for his fellow man or woman. He was direct, caring, & a true believer in the goodness of his fellow human being.

Happy New Year to all of you from the Pantorillas! Most of you may know that Ernie retired in Jan. 07 as a result of his bout with Blastomycosis in the summer of 06. he was hospitalized for 6 wks. and was on a ventilator for 2 of the 6 wks. and dialysis for 4 wks. His road to recovery was long and hard and continues today. In the summer of 07 his right lung collapsed and the Drs. do not know why. He was able to work at a local Golf Course the remainder of the summer and have some fun when the lung reinflated. His wish is to return to Hawaii to retire but the doctors here will not allow the move because of the lack of doctors in Hawaii to meet his needs. We are looking at downsizing here and then spending our winters in Hawaii.I am stilling enjoying flying and will continue at least another 1 1/2 yrs.

Just to let you know that our very dear friend Jonii Patterson passed away this morning at 11::51am at her daughter Mischa's home in Moline.  Mischa said that our little Jonii went very peacefully. We'll miss her for sure!

I just wanted to thank all the people who sent me the comforting messages and cards after my Dad died.  It was especially appreciated due to the fact my Mom went into the hospital with pneumonia two days after my Dad died and was not able to attend my Dad's service. She just returned home 2 wks ago from rehab were she was sent to build her strength back up. Now we have had to get round the clock care for her.
I was off work for 4 mos. during this time due to chronic bronchitis, and other health concerns. The stress they tell me added to my health troubles.
So I just wanted you all to know, that all of your support was VERY much appreciated!

   Are you aware of Mary Lou's turbulence injury on Friday out of Shanghai?We had very sudden and very intense severe clear air turbulence. She hit the ceiling and landed on her bent left leg. She broke her ankle, two bones in her leg and bones in her foot.

Hello everyone, 
I just received word that Camille Mason's husband Dri died yesterday!  I don't have any details yet, and I haven't been able to contact her on the phone.  I would imagine Russ Johns and "Herb's News" will be putting forth information ASAP regarding the date of the funeral etc. 
 
Camille and I used to talk quite frequently on the phone, and without fail, she would always tell me how happy she was, and how lucky we both were to have found "our guys" at such a late time in our lives!  Just a few days ago we made plans to get together as soon as the weather warmed up, and they were going to spend a weekend with Gene and I out here in the country relaxing by our pool, and enjoying some of the restaurants in our area.  Sadly those plans now won't include Dri in the future.  Camille told me that the two & a half years she has been married to Dri have been the happiest of her whole life.  I know she will appreciate hearing from all of you.

Latest update re: Lesley Shaw...i have now started chemotherapy every 3 weeks for several months...the treatments make me fatigued and unsteady on feet...it's a slow process, and patience is not one of my virtues...i will be doing physical therapy to get around better...good news, i will not have to wear my back/body brace all the time...God bless all of you for your support throughout my ordeal...love, les shaw

To the retirees who are unaale to get email from American on Lesley Shaw's progress. Here is an update. She is on the Rehab floor, at Lutheran General, in a back brace that goes from her waist up her back. I spoke with her Mom the other day. She will have to have radiation and chemo once she is recovered and strong enough. Some of the tumor had to be left at/or near her spine. No calls or visitors are allowed at this time. Lesley is in a lot of pain. As one can only imagine. She has been thru so much. As always, keep her in your prayers. Thanks to all of you. Kathy Coffman

The reunion was fantastic. I had so much fun seeing everyone again. I just received Eloise's picture album by email and it is great! Thanks for sharing it Eloise. Two days ago I spoke with Lesley Shaw's sister, Jennifer. Lesley has just had surgery on her spine. She went into Emergency Surgery Mon. or Tues. for a cancerous tumor on her spine. She just got out of Intensive Care. From there, she will remain in hospital and then rehab. Les has been a very courageous woman, and gone thru so much in the last five years. Her Mom and sister do not want visitors or cards sent to the hospital just yet. Les is in terrible pain, and isn't up for company. I have just hung up talking with Health First and they are in the process of sending out bills and I was told have extended the deadline date on our supplemental insurance.

If you are a retiree who funds your Supplemental Insurance Program through HEALTH FIRST, be aware of a last minute change in premium payment...in the fall, Health First sent out a notice offering automatic bank drafts for the premiums, which many of us filled out and sent in. It was in lieu of paying the $60 annual premium by check, a bill for which had been sent out on September 22nd. They told us we could ignore the bill, fill out the bank draft info, and it would automatically be deducted from our bank account each January in the future...we wouldn't need to remember to pay the bill by mail from now on. Well, they have now reversed course, and sent out a message saying we have to pay the bill by mail after all, the bank drafts are no good. That premium payment is due on JANUARY 31st! It is the front and center story on the Jetnet Homepage for retirees. If, when you access Jetnet, you glance at the main story on the homepage, and don't see it, it's because the homepage cycles through 3 or 4 stories as you look at it...so click on "previous stories" until it comes up. The number to call to get your premium straightened out at Health First is 1-800 711-7083. Follow the prompts to customer service. I've been told they are supposed to contact us by mail to notify us of all this, so be on the lookout for it. Ginger Gainer

    It seems that the holidays bring us many happy tidings, but unfortunately some sad ones as well.
    Just got word that Kay Fasano's husband was killed in a car accident. They were in NJ visiting their daughter. He went for a walk after dinner and was hit by a car. No details as of yet. Will keep you posted. The office has been advised. Please pass it on. They will need lots of prayers. That is about all we can do right now.
    Also, Valerie Smith, now retired, has lost her husband to cancer. Will call Gloria Herrera to find out more info. & will pass it on.

Hi to all who still read any messages on this web site. I like Pat Avery seem to have too many things going on at once or I have lost my ability to get all of the things done that I want to get done. On that note I am asking for any information about new retirees. I haven't updated the phone list since July partly because I keep taking two steps back for each one forward and partly because I haven't received much information from anywhere. Eloise and Russell send me stuff now and than, but the web site from AA hasn't been updated since April. Golden Wings can be reached at 800-521-2510, but it is my understanding that you have to purchase their insurance within a month (or two) of retiring in order to qualify. After you purchase their $600,000 supp policy you are then able to sign up for their dental policy, which I understand is far superior to the dental policy that AA offers retirees.

For new retirees you need to send a copy of the letter that AA (United Health Care) sent you attesting to the amount of your American Airlines Pre-Funded Retiree Medical Insurance to: 389 Linwood Avenue, Buffalo, NY 14209

Susan Harrigan is correct. Golden Wings is used when one exhausts their AMR insurance. One must buy the basic medical inorder to buy the dental. (Consider the dental as a rider to the basic) However, their dental insurance is great. I can find no better dental. My decision was to buy the basic, just so I could have the dental. I spend about $1,000 yearly for dental care, so I break even with the medical and dental premiums. But, if I ever exhaust my AMR I would have that extra medical, that I might not otherwise be able to buy.
