Hello Huss, thank you for your question. I believe a business model is critical and guides a business plan, but they can be seen as equally important to success because success is often so dependent on implementing the right strategies and activities. Not sure if a business model can ever be 'perfected', as it needs to evolve regularly as the environment changes. Osterwalder & Pigneur define 9 building blocks for a business model, namely customer segments, value propositions, channels, customer relationships, revenue streams, key resources, key activities, key partnerships and cost structure, refer to their work on Business Model Generation. Let me know your experience developing and executing business models, john@audiencedialogue.net.

Do you believe that a business plan is more important than the business model? To me, if the business model is not perfected, no amount of business planning can fix.

Dear Mr. John,
Audience dialogue is truly a bible for the beginners and the for the people who are already in the field. Tons of thanks for your work.
I like to read more about New Media Research (eg. Social Media, video sharing, IP TV, Blogging etc.) I do not find it on your site. It'll be really great if you update the site with New Media Research. And meanwhile please give me any links or literature for my knowledge.

With a country like Bangladesh, which has a growing rural market, how do you get to 'motivate' the traditional media (TV, print) to start focusing more on rural audience needs. This comes at a time, when the traditional media here are very skeptical about research findings but at tme same time local companies are increasing their marketing budget to target rural. Any help or insight would be much appreciated. FYI I work of a poverty alleviation project who aims to work in the media market and influence them, sustainably, to cover rural news.

I stumbled upon this web site and based on some of the comments here I thought some readers might be interested to hear about my company's 21CFR11 compliant electronic lab notebook software called CERF. CERF is mainly used by scientists, but it's flexible enough to be used to gather any data from any source and securely store in in ways that are digitally authenticated and date stamped, making it admissible in legal and regulatory procedures. Although it was designed to protect multi-million dollar scientific patent research, it would be extremely useful in any qualitative research project that works with human subjects, and therefore necessarily will involve IRB and other strict regulations. www.rescentris.com

Thank you very much for your request Marianne and I apologise for the slow response. We can provide ideas on evaluation methods that may be helpful to your project and indeed others. Our website has a variety of content related to evaluation and can also point you in the right direction to more resources. I have emailed you and Steps and await your response.

Dear John

I have come across your website and would like to establish contact . We are working in a communication for social change project: STEPS for the Future www.steps.co.za

Based in Cape Town, South Africa and have produced over thirty documentaries about HIV and AIDS and established an extensive outreach programme around Southern Africa to stimulate debate around HIV and AIDS through community screenings. The method of using documentary film screenings facilitated by people, who are openly living with HIV has proven effective in creating safe spaces for open dialogue to challenge stigma and discrimination.
We are now looking for professional input while following up audiences to measure the longer term impact of our intervention. How can we exchange ideas ? Can I also order the book : Know your audience.

Website under new management. My name is John Goslino and I maintain the website on behalf of its creator, the late Dennis List, with whom I had great pleasure in working and sharing ideas for several years. Dennis List was an innovative and passionate thinker and developer of research, planning, communication and evaluation methods who worked closely with people and organisations across the globe, helping them better understand their world and how they could achieve their goals. He was also a keen proponent and user of the internet. This website is testimony to his great breadth of knowledge, experience and most importantly perhaps, the commitment he gave to help others, including many in the developing world. It contains a wealth of well researched and tested information, tools and techniques that are relevant, practical and usable.

I intend to retain, update and enhance the website to keep it relevant and useful for you and your colleagues. Many of the ideas for change or new content may I hope come from site users like you, so please send me your suggestions and comments. I will endeavour to answer your questions as best I can, and if I can't do so, try to find someone who can. You can email me directly at john.goslino(@gmail.com) - remove brackets in the address when you write to me. I look forward to a dialogue with you and trust you continue to enjoy visiting this website (and refer your friends and colleagues).
