Hey wait...I thought the 70's were the grim & gritty period?!?! Either way, I always felt Josh Whedon was a pompous ass but he is currently writing a great series and Cassaday is 20 times BETTER than the overrated Jim Lee in my opinion.
And I can't believe no one has mentioned CONAN yet?? It's great storytelling and artwork.
Dan, I will be in touch re: the possible gig. It isn't cleaning the cigarette butts after Fred's poker parties is it???? Actually that would be a step up from what I'm doing now.

Dan,
Of course you and I both know that "best selling" and "best quality" aren't synonomous. Otherwise, you wouldn't keep recommending all those cutting-edge graphic novels...
And, as for what time period of comics I would prefer, you completely skipped the 60's and 70s. Give me the idealism of the early 40's, or the idealism, hipness, social relevance and innovation of the late '60s to the Grim 'n' gritty 80s, in which comics writers turned inwards, contemplating their navels, and decided they were paranoid nutcases, and comics should be too.

In all the fuss, I left off the great job they're doing with Astonishing X-Men. Josh Wheldon is really laying down a captivating plot...and the dialogue is good, very good.

Joe,
Look for the Avengers Disassembled spinoffs to vary wildly in quality, depending on the creative teams associated. Bendis has gone on record saying he's planning a long run on the book, not unlike his incredible run on DD. Don't forget to check out Powers too. Formerly published by Image, this title is Bendis at his uncensored best. The letters page is particularly fun to read, too.

Anatole,
All I can say is that ID Crisis is the best selling comic in the store and that people are responding positively to the story. I thought #2 was a bit brutal, but I think the point was to point out that the squeaky clean memories of halcyon days gone by are mostly just nostalgic cover-up to the real problems of the era.
Would I rather have grown up in the grim & gritty in-your-face eighties, or the serenely racist and xenophobic fifties? I think the choice is obvious.

Finished Avengers 500 last night.
Art, story, concept...the whole thing was very, very excellent. And it left me with the best of feelings as a comic reader...the impatience at having to wait another month for the next. (Happily - NOT - both the Ultimates and NYX have taught me that kind of patience)
I only hope the spin-off sub-stories in the other titles can live up to the standard that was set.
On a scale of one to four stars, give it five.

Holy Cochangas!!! First I get canned at SUN which renders me unable to babble on this board (can't do it from home.....I have to be on company time for inspiration to hit) and now that I can finally log on, Wilson's gone NUTS!!!!
I'm gonna have to buy this "nasty" comic. With that said....good comic flick news for Anatole at least. Bryan Singer has dissed the X-Men franchise and decided to direct the SUPERMAN movie.
Heartbreaking for me since X2 was quite the homerun and I deee-spise Superman. Now all you delinquents go crazy....break some windows and oh yeah....find me a REAL job already!!!

So I read "Identity Crisis" #2. Dan, *this* is your idea of a good comic?!?!?! Not only has Sue Dibny been killed just as she finds out she's pregnant, now she's been raped too? And some of our most prominent DC super-heroes are running around lobotomizing the bad guys?
What garbage!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Is this really what people think makes a "realistic" comic? Is this how low DC thinks they have to stoop to get readers? How sad...

Crossgen proved the old adage that the best way to make a small fortune in the comics business is to start with a large one.

Oh--A May Steven Grant column says CrossGen went belly up. Rats!
So before I risk breaking my little niece's heart again, is Image planning to put out any more Leave It To Chance books?

So does anyone know what's going on with the CrossGen titles? I just got my 11-year-old niece hooked on Abadazad, and then I go check out the CrossGen site, and it hasn't been updated since May. :( I read something about them declaring bankruptcy?

That said, the pictures in Action are realllllll purty, and I am enjoying the characterizations of the Teen Titans.

Superman comics this month are easy to summarize:
Action - It's Gog! Pow! Superman - Hi Father. Where's your congregation? I feel so guilty. I'm so unhappy. See you next month!
Did I leave anything out?
