I haven't read the lateste issue so I don't know about that whole ultron thing. Second, last i checked they weren't fight loki, they were just following what he said in reference to thor. I don't care about ultimate wrecker either. i'm more interested in seeing the new spins on character origins as well, but new spins doesn't mean kicking everyone's arse that's already on the team.

First off, please turn off your caps lock key.

Second, The Ultimates are fighting Loki now, they just beat the Skrulls in the last arc and Ultron just appeared in the latest issue. I'm more interested in the great spins Millar puts on classic characters than in just seeing "Ultimate Wrecker".

I'VE BEEN THINKING ABOUT THIS FOR A LONG TIME NOW. DOES ANYONE ELSE SEEM TO HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THE ULTIMATES? WE DON'T SEE AN NEW "ULTIMATE" VERSIONS OF CLASSIC VILLANS LIKE ULTRON, BARON ZEMO, THE WRECKING CREW, OR GRIM REAPER OR ANYONE. ALL THE OTHER ULTIMATE BOOKS (XMEN ESPECIALLY) HAVE DONE A GREAT JOB RECREATING STANDARD VILLIANS. THE ULTIMATES HAVEN'T FOUGHT ANYONE OUTSIDE OF THEIR OWN RANKS. FIRST IT WAS BANNER, THEN IT WAS CAP AND PYM, THEN IT WAS THOR. IF YOU WANT TO TAKE IT A STEP FURTHER, THEY'VE ONLY FOUGHT IN ONE BATTLE WHERE THE ENEMY WAS TRULY EVIL WITH THAT WHOLE CHITAURI THING. AND DON'T PULL THE MAGNETO CARD BECAUSE THAT WAS LIKE A 2 PAGE FIGHT AND HE WIPED THE FLOOR WITH THEM. EVERYONE ELSE THEY FOUGHT, INCLUDING THE XMEN, HAVE ALL BEEN HEROES. DON'T GET ME WRONG, IT'S A GREAT BOOK, BUT TO ME JUST DOESN'T MAKE SENSE.

Hey, does anyone else think that Nick Fury has been acting a little dazed and confused lately? He doesn't seem like his old thinking-one step-ahead self. It seems more like he is being taken for a ride instead of grabing the wheel and driving.

Of course, there is one other possibility.

Cap.

Like Janet, sounds weird, but it would fulfill the requirement of someone familiar with HAnk and who would find the stuff that was happening objectionable.

But Cap would be a real stretch - the explanation would have to be really twisted.

I'm still going with Janet, with Betty a close second.

One other culprit comes to mind re last two pages.

Betty Ross.

Just read the latest Ultimates, and the final two pages several times.

So who is the mystery member of the team drinking coffee with Pym?

Tony? Don't buy it - he turned on Thor...and he really LIKED Thor.

Hawkeye? Don't think so. His character doesn't seem shaped to where he'd be friendly with Pym, let alone familiar.

Pietro? If Hawkeye would be distant, Quicksilver would be on another continent.

Jarvis? I know he isn't an "official" member, but he seems in on everything, and the way the dialogue comes out you could almost see it, except Jarvis likes to push the hyperbole and innuendo especially.

So what does that leave us?

I think it is a woman.

I think Wanda is out. Hank was pretty much gone by the time she was officially on board.

Black Widow? Same deal, and she doesn't seem nay more inclined to be friendly as Hawkeye - and the reasoning offered doesn't mesh with her origins (same with Wanda.)

Process of elimination:

Dammit!

It's Janet!

Think about it.

Hey, if you like alternate futures, DC has a couple of stories going on that are fun reads. Check out Teen Titans #17 & #18, and also Superman/Batman #14. Both futures are very grim but entertaining. The Teen Titans encounter themselves ten years in the future and do not like what they see. It is interesting to see how the characters' powers and abilities have grown but with the influence of some terrible "crisis" event. In Superman/Batman, both are taken from their point of origin into the future (guess by who?). Both are trained so they can rule the world once they are put back in order to change the future. I do think in the end, the Anatole(heroic) universe will prevail over the Mario(darker) universe.

Buy The Gift TPB! OUT NOW!!!! This is one trade you don't want to miss.

The Gift #8 is out! According to Raven Gregory this is the most important and different issue of The Gift.

The story follows the Ancient One. He has these item's...these "gift's" that have these incredible powers that he gives to normal everyday people. So depending on what kind of character the person is or what kind of situation their in determinds how the story plays out. Now the first arc of the series deals with a different character receiving a different "gift" each issue. But as you read through the stories you start to see subtle hints and clues as to why the Ancient One is doing what he's doing. And as the characters start to come back around later on in the series and interacting with each other you start to realize that nothing has happened by chance...that it's all been a part of this plan that he's had from the very beginning.

Kinda like the Twilight Zone on crack.

Me too. I'm going to miss Capt. Boomerang.

Okay, that was a joke. I'm really going to miss Ronnie Raymond. The way they "killed" him was pointless and only so they could expain the new Firestorm series, which I'm sure will be canceled any time now.

Interesting related developments in Flash--Heatwave and a couple of other rogues who have gone straight are ticked off at being harrassed by JlAers... as well they should be. This comic has all the DC heroes acting like amoral vigilantes. Very sad.

Welcome, Danny. I think Colossus died as a result of the mutant killing legacy virus.

Check out:

for a nice history. He died testing the vaccine that eliminated the virus. I'm sure it seemed noble and important at the time, but it was a weak way to kill off such a beloved character.

I had a neighbor down the street who got shot in the eye with an arrow. He lived but he lost the eye. If GA was smart he'd have jammed it in Slade's good eye, not the one that doesn't work! Seriously, can you really be the world'd greatest assassin with no depth perception?

I always thought the good-natured hippie vs fascist bantering between Green Arrow and Hawkman was to mask their obvious attraction for each other. You're right that it's a little bit of a stretch to say it was really all about whether it was ok to brainwash super villains. Wasn't this already done in Squadron Supreme?

They can't kill Jimmy, but I think you might be right about Jack(?) Drake, Robin's dad. It would get him out of the way and we'd be back to the classic revenge-driven orphan acrobat model for Robin.

So the Identity Crisis #3 was a little more palatable, because of who they killed off (I never liked her anyway), and it recalled one of my favorite old series, the Secret Society of Super-villains.

Stupid stuff (spoilers)

1) Wouldn't an arrow in the eye kill you? 2) The moral issues are why GA and Hawkman have quarrelled (good naturedly, if you look back) all these years? Don't think so. 3) They said the second woman who was killed went public with her divorce. Um, wouldn't that have compromised her husband's secret ID? *He* never went public.

Looks like they're setting up the potential victims for next time--will it be Robin's dad or Jimmy Olsen? Will we care?

The reviewer doesn't seem to like it, but is willing to give Brad Meltzer "the benefit of the doubt"

I wouldn't ocunt Daredevil as Grim 'n' Gritty, because DD wasn't a vigilante psychopath who basked in violence in the Miller stories.

DD was certainly darker, but more in the vain that the '70s Batman was more the "Darkknight Detective" who operated from the shadows.

Well, I wouldn't call rape and murder, as well corrupting the values of heroes (which I consider central to what they're all about) "fun".

Dan,

Of course you and I both know that "best selling" and "best quality" aren't synonomous. Otherwise, you wouldn't keep recommending all those cutting-edge graphic novels...

And, as for what time period of comics I would prefer, you completely skipped the 60's and 70s. Give me the idealism of the early 40's, or the idealism, hipness, social relevance and innovation of the late '60s to the Grim 'n' gritty 80s, in which comics writers turned inwards, contemplating their navels, and decided they were paranoid nutcases, and comics should be too.

Look for the Avengers Disassembled spinoffs to vary wildly in quality, depending on the creative teams associated. Anatole,

All I can say is that ID Crisis is the best selling comic in the store and that people are responding positively to the story. I thought #2 was a bit brutal, but I think the point was to point out that the squeaky clean memories of halcyon days gone by are mostly just nostalgic cover-up to the real problems of the era.

Would I rather have grown up in the grim & gritty in-your-face eighties, or the serenely racist and xenophobic fifties? I think the choice is obvious.

Art, story, concept...the whole thing was very, very excellent. And it left me with the best of feelings as a comic reader...the impatience at having to wait another month for the next. (Happily - NOT - both the Ultimates and NYX have taught me that kind of patience)

Supreme power was good last week but you can describe the entire storyline in one sentence. I agree with Anatole that not enough happens in one issue nowadays. Can anyone tell me what the storyline is for Superman? I keep waiting for a story to start, but now I am just hoping there IS a story. Thumbs up for Swamp Thing. It wasn't that it started a great story, yet, but the approach to the mutant group takes the x-men back to their glory days and moves them forward at the same time. To steal an old line, if you only buy one book this week, this is the one!! nuff said.

Okay-some comics I don't get around to reading for a while. Just finished a six-month run of Birds of Prey, and I'm nominating it for best series that no one talks about. Good art, interesting writing, and lots of plot.

Hey, I read in Wizard that the fans voted for Mimic as one of the worst x-characters ever. How can fans not remember this classic villian with the same fondness as I do. Flying around with Angel's wings with the amazing athleticism of the Beast. Deflecting attacks with an ice shield while blasting away with his optic blasts. All this plus the brain power of Professor X! I used to think he was a perfect villain because he could always be as powerful as his opponent. Talk about playing to the competition. I use to love when this guy showed up, of course I was five at the time. What ever happened to this guy?
