Richard,

believe me, some of the veterans know this by now. They are less astonished than you are. How childish people can be believing in heros, in Good and Evil. There was an age of enlightenment but some people missed it obviously.

You said US fought not for freedom, but for interest and money in France and Korea.I am astonished to hear that. You are insulting those brave men and women. You should face to face with those WWII veterans and told them,"You are not hero, you fight only for economy and money!".
Fine,Let's stop this debate.I am very happy to speak with you.God bless you.

Sorry, Richard, but you live in a dream-world. It's not true that the Iraqis freed themselves. Its was an invasion same style as the USSR did in Afghanistan. Of course I don't know the exact number of how many Iraqis fight the US in Iraq. But let me ask you: do you watch the news once in a while? These are not just a couple of terrorists. And I'm really shocked how naive you are. Do you really think it was about "freedom" in Korea and France? And how about Vietnam? Please... you can't really believe this. Its about political interests, its about the economy, its about money. Maybe its because you live or lived in a communist country that you think that outside of this country everything is better.

In fact, I really think those all dictator regimes should be overthrowed, no matter by inside or outside forces. I should remind you that it's not US freed the Iraqis in this war,but Iraqis freed themselves, under the help of the US.
As for the "hostages fighting the US.", Could you tell me in all Iraqis people, how many fight the US?
Brian,I am very puzelled by your attitude towards your own army.I respect them and their cause. They sacrified their own lives for those poor people, just as they did 50 years ago in France,40 years ago in Korea. When they only wait and do nothing, just as 50 years ago in china mainland, they left thousands of poor chinese into the hand of Communists.Did you have any experience living in an Communist Country?:)))

Richard,

in an older post you had a typo: "UN has already turned herself into an umbrella of protection of the dictatorship." I'm sure you meant "US" instead of "UN".

And tell me why the hostages now fight the US (SH is gone now). You use strange examples. With this kind of logic I guess there's a long list of nations who are next on Bush's list: Iran, North Korea, Cuba... and how about France (they really never understood the meaning of liberty) :)) But then, maybe they don't need liberty - because they've got no oil.

 Brian,
   Let’s make your argument clearly:
1 ) In previous debate, You admitted SH was terrorist himself, he hijacked Iraqis.
2 ) You said It was right to get rid of a terrorist and rescue the hostage-Iraqis.
  3) You oppose the war only because it caused hostages die, not because you are with SH’s side. If the war could only killed one person -SH and keep every Iraqis safe. I think you will be satisfied and support it.
In fact, the whole things should have the chance to go with your preferable way: Before the war broke out, SH was offered an alternative-quit from his presidency and exile, he rebuffed. FBI has tried many times to assassinate SH and failed. Like any other terrorist and hijacker, SH would not give up and release the hostage easily. Now, if you were president of US, facing a dilemma, one is rescue the hostage, taking risk of endangering some, the other is just wait, doing nothing, comforting yourself: “at least, those hostage were killed by SH, not by me!” which way you should go? Fortunately, you were not Bush, you need not to make choice. While Mr Bush must, for US citizen voted him to make decision. He made a right and hard decision, which those “intelligent and open minded person” will never have the courage and sense of commitment to make.

joe joe -

thanks for calling me an "intelligent person". I guess you really believe that it is "Good" vs "Evil": welcome to the Middle Ages.

How many of the hijackers from 9/11 were from Iraq? You have a very weird understanding of "self-defense" I must say. Something like: "Shoot the guy, he might attack me later." It would be funny if no real people would die.

The world isn't a computer game.
joe joe  62

Brian -

You clearly show that you are an intelligent person who appreciates complexities, but you are wrong. This is indeed Good versus Evil.

Although it is of course unfortunate that innocent people will die in this war, you fail to consider the many, many more innocent people who would die if we failed to prevent these state-sponsored terrorists from attacking our cities.

And by the way, self-defense is a sovereign right. While the U.N. recognizes this right, it does not confer it.

U tell me about UN charter?
hehe, UN has already turned herself into an umbrella of protection of the dictatorship.US,UK,and those Anglo-Saxon nations are the only hope of the whole world.Maybe ps those Eastern Europe countries.

BBC's headline of today:

Iraq war illegal, says Annan

The UN's Kofi Annan tells the BBC the US-led invasion of Iraq was illegal and contravened the UN charter.

Right. There are average Iraqis who were happy that SH is gone. There are many average Iraqis dead or wounded, there will be more dead and wounded: average Iraqis, US soldiers and others. You just have to watch the daily news. You can't stop this through military actions. This topic is ironically true: we're on a "road to nowhere".

To quote one of the soccer players from Iraq who played in Athens: "If I were at home in Falluja, I would fight the Americans." Think about it: why?

The picture is much more complex than joe joe (and you?) like it. It's not "Good against Evil". Its "ignorance against an open mind". And you will find both on both "sides" [I don't like this word].

Brian,
You said"The only ones who profit(from the war) are Mr Bush and the defence industry."I am surprised by your conclusion. How do you think of those average Iraqis who fired to the sky hearing SD's capture? How do you think of the free Iraq football players that no longer feared to be strapped by KUSAI and UDA?
  Don't make conclusion too early,Please.

joe joe -

I educated myself about the expert and I learnt that you prefer to believe the "World Socialist Web Site" rather than the BBC, CNN and the New York Times.

You and Mr Chen talk about "toppling" and "get rid of" - but constantly avoid to look at the results of this still ongoing war: thousands of dead people. Yes, SH is a terrorist himself, no doubt, but joe joe's assumption that more lives are saved by the invasion is just wishful thinking. Don't you think, Mr Chen, that this kind of calculating is disgusting?

joe joe - how can I feel gratitude if the result of this invasion is not to protect but to endanger so many lifes?
Richard Chen  56

Brian,
It does't matter if SD has links with those terrirosts.Saddam is terrorist himself. He killed thousands of civilians with chemical weapons,he built so many palaces when his people were starving,he has the supporting rate 100% .Is that enough for U.S to get rid of him? Talking and spending too much time in finding "the links"between SD and the terriorsts is obviously foolish, disgusting.

Here, please educate yourself about your alleged "expert":

http://www.wsws.org/articles/2003/aug2003/guna-a08.shtml

And to answer your question, yes, state-sponsored terrorists in Iraq justify -- indeed necessitate -- toppling the government sponsor. ( And this ultimately saves a lot more innocent people than it harms ).

Sorry you have no gratitude toward those who protect you.

joe joe:

you wrote: "Ansar al Islam is one terrorist group who is now less capable of attacking my family." So, you don't care if your family is attacked by other terrorists groups? Maybe you didn't read what the head of the terrorism research at the Institute of Defense said?? Sorry, joe joe, but some time you need to wake up and face reality. We can't solve problems by killing people and statements like "God Bless our troops". BTW - that's exactly what the terrorists say: "Kill the bad guys (westerners) and god bless those who succeed in it."

Really, I'm disappointed by your statements.

This so-called "link" you're talking about: is this enough for you to invade a country and kill a lot of innocent people? You never answered this question but it seems you don't care about them.

Ansar al Islam is one terrorist group who is now less capable of attacking my family. I thank the military for reducing this threat.

And as I have already shown, Ansar al Islam is also the "link" between al Qaeda and Saddam Hussein that you simply refuse to acknowledge.

Democracy grew in Japan - it can grow in Iraq.

God Bless our Troops.

First of all let me say that I agree with "start" 100%. Then I'd like to quote Dr Gunaratna [head of terrorism research at the Institute of Defense and Strategic Studies]: "...as a result of the US invasion of Iraq, new terrorist groups have emerged and several existing ones that were weakened have become stronger." That's exactly what I meant, joe joe. I don't feel safer now - on the contrary. So many people in arab countries sympathize now with the terrorists because of the invasion of Iraq. And although I don't appreciate this it comes as no surprise. This invasion was a big mistake and we all (western world and middle east)will have to pay the price for that. The only ones who profit are Mr Bush and the defence industry.

I'm surprised you talk about moral standards and internationally acceptable behavior in this context because the invasion of Iraq violates both points. The government gave fake reasons for this invasion (as did SH when he invaded Kuwait). There are no WMD in Iraq, no links to the terrosists who did the attacks on 9/11... The only "reason": SH is a bad guy. If this is a reason to invade a country, the US will be busy to invade a lot of counries in the future.

Okay Brian -

Please check out the bipartisan 9/11 Commission Report. While they found no evidence of a "collaborative operational relationship" between bin Laden and Saddam, there were indeed multiple meetings and "friendly contacts" between the two. (page 66). And bin Laden supported Ansar al Islam. Although this fundamentalist Islamic terror group was initially anti-Saddam, by 2001 the Iraqi regime "tolerated and may have even helped" Ansar al Islam. (page 61).

Brian - I'm hoping you and others will recognize the grave and immediate danger terrorism poses to ALL of us. Described by the commission as "an enemy who is sophisticated, patient, disciplined and lethal" (Preface, page xv), these murderers certainly don't differentiate between Republicans and Democrats.

This war is not just "worth it" -- it is necessary to our survival.

-- We are on the same side, brother.

well, McCain got to say something like that if he wants to have a political future. "We have nothing to fear from each other" applies perfectly to his relationship to Bush - it's politics: give and take. A wise decision for McCain - not for the people.

Did you catch the speech by Sen. McCain the other day? - He essentially said this war is necessary to prevent the graver threat of terror. But in times like this when we face grave danger, it indeed is necessary that we disagree w/ one another - "we have nothing to fear from each other."
- Words of wisdom from a man who's been to hell and back.

joe joe:

The question is not if I believe your sources, the question is if it is worth to kill thousands of innocent people in a war just because people like you feel threatened by groups he reads about in the press.

Don't get me wrong: you said it is refreshing that people respect each other who have different views. I agree and (if you believe it or not) I respect you, too. It's just that I think you don't see the whole picture and because of that you come to the wrong conclusions.

God bless all peaceful people.

Messrs. Chen and Zhao -

It is refreshing to read the civil discourse between the two of you. You two clearly have a great deal of respect for each other, and we all need more of that these days.

Let me just interject that the premise of "no link" between Saddam Hussein and terrorism is false. The link is a terrorist group called Ansar al Islam. Brian didn't like the link I referred him to, so here is another (liberal) link describing this terrorist group that was decimated by Allied forces during this war :

http://www.hrw.org/backgrounder/mena/ansarbk020503.htm

As an American, I am deeply grateful to my military for protecting me from these terrorists, and I am grateful to those in the free world who understand this grave threat we are all facing.

God Bless China, God Bless the Free World, and God Bless America.

  Mr zhao,
I apologize for somewhat impolite words in the process of debating. Those words were not intentionlly uttered to insult anyone, they are the results of my not so good skill of selecting proporiate words, especially when talking such emotional and sentitive topic.
From your words and arguments,I'm impressed by your elegance and smartness. It seemed you are chinese-blooded too,I don't know if you still could write in chinese? If you are interested to talk deeper-in chinese,I'll be very happy. My email address: riffle76@yahoo.com.cn
  Thanks again,Mr zhao.

Dear Mr Chen,

even though I don't share your opinion, I respect you as a person, of course. I think we both know now what the other is thinking. If we both think now about the others position, this discussion was not in vain. You said a very true thing:

"In most of time, differences don't occur for logic reasons, but for basic belief."

This doesn't just apply to you or me but also to people with different religions like Muslims in Iraq and elsewhere. I'm not Christian nor Muslim - but people should respect each other.
Richard Chen  36
08-17-2004 09:19 PM ET (US)
Mr zhao
I admire your strict moral standards when talking about US role in this war.Maybe you are right,or at least, you should do so for being an American citizen,it's natural you fell some kind of moral obligation for the government's policy. But as to me,I don't care if Us are morally perfect.Things are obvious :Some people(SH) are doing bed things to his people and the whole world, any actions aiming to stop him should be encouraged.
Frankly to say,I am tired of debating this topic. In most of time, differences don't occur for logic reasons, but for basic belief. I'm very happy to stop a debate with a guy who have different basic belief with me.Thanks again,Mr zhao.
Zhao Zheng-Fu  35
08-17-2004 07:31 PM ET (US)
Dear Mr Chen,

I'm surprised you talk about moral standards and internationally acceptable behavior in this context because the invasion of Iraq violates both points. The government gave fake reasons for this invasion (as did SH when he invaded Kuwait). There are no WMD in Iraq, no links to the terrosists who did the attacks on 9/11... The only "reason": SH is a bad guy. If this is a reason to invade a country, the US will be busy to invade a lot of counries in the future.

Things are unfortunately not so simple as you think, the real world isn't a Hollywood movie where there's only good and bad - it's much more complex.

And have a look at Iraq now. What did the people get? Thousands are dead, no security, no freedom, civil war. Anyone who's not naive could have predicted this result, and many did. But the US government didn't listen. And you still think the invasion was the right thing to do?
Richard Chen  34
08-14-2004 06:39 AM ET (US)
 Mr zhao

1 SD killed thousands of innocent Iraqi with his chemical weapons, invaded kuwait during his regime. But you say he didn't attack the free world? Free world doesnot only mean nations but mean the moral standards and internationlly acceptable behavior.Things is not so complex :sometings you could do,and others you could't, or you will be punished.
2 I agree with you that US do not have moral supriorty to decide who should be punished, and sometimes US are selfish and hypercisy. But that doesn't means this war is morally wrong. The war overthrowed a ditator, freed a people who are craving for freedom and dignity. So the war is right and worthy GM's sacrifice.
3 I am not living in US.So to me,if sD has links with terriorists are not so important. They get rid of a dicatitora and scared the other dictatorship regime in the other part of the world,so it's helpful to our wellfare.
Zhao Zheng-Fu  33
08-13-2004 08:52 PM ET (US)
Dear Mr Chen,

I, too appreciate your polite way in debating. But still I'm think you're wrong on several points. Regarding my age, I think you are probably younger than me (over 70?). Then, the 9/11 attack happened in 2001, not 2000. Also the comparison between Churcill and Rumsfeld is incorrect. The Nazis attacked the free world, Iraq didn't. And another point: you say that Saddam (SD?) killed more than the invasion of Iraq by the US military. So, your logic is: it's ok to kill 10,000 if someone else killed 15,000 people? If you are caught by the police (just an example) stealing $5,000 from someone, will you defend yourself by telling the police that someone else stole $10,000? With all due respect for you: this is how a child argues.

We agree that Saddam is a bad man and leader, right? There were and are bad leaders in many countries. But our US government didn't care about that - so why Saddam? What kind of freedom we are talking about? The freedom of our government to change the world landscape by force? If China would do this, we would condemn it, the same with any other country. But we have the right to do so? There's no logic or moral behaving like that.

And finally: what's the reason for this war? I'm not sure because people who defend the invasion always change their arguments. Sometimes they say: get rid of Saddam (he's a bad leader), sometimes they say that there were connections between the 9/11 terrorists and Iraq. The first has no moral justification, the second was proven wrong. Or is it just because we would like more influence in the middle east?
Richard Chen  32
08-13-2004 10:29 AM ET (US)
 Dear Mr zhao

I greatly apprciate your polite way in debating. But your logic are not as appreciatale as your manner. It's not the anti-terriosm war create terrorists, but those terrorists kindled the war against them.911 happend in 2000,while Iraq war in 2003.
Mr Rumsfeld called Saddam his friend, while, it was because they both has a common demon rival -IRAN.Churchill also called Stalin friend, for they must work together to fight Nazi. You are suggesting Churchill are not sincere?I must to say:You are too young and sometimes naive.
Many Iraqi civilians were killed by the war. They are miserable and innocent. But we must not forget: SD killed more and killed intentionly.Doctor's mishandles are really so terriable that for avoiding mistake,we must pretend the cancer doesnot exist and do nothing?
As for assisanation of SD,US has tried many times but failed. They did't done their job well,I think.
Finally, You too agree with getting rid of SM? ....)
Zhao Zheng-Fu  31
08-13-2004 06:00 AM ET (US)
Dear Mr Chen,

first of all you didn't answer my questions: why is the world now more dangerous only for a short time? Someone (I think it was Brian) said this war creates terrorists and I think he is right. If you define the terrorists as cancer, the cancer will spread. Second: you asked a good question. "Who is cancer, who is patient?" You say Saddam Hussein is cancer. He didn't change in the last 20 years, so he was cancer before. The US government didn't care. They supported him in his war against Iran. Mr Rumsfeld was in Baghdad before and called Saddam his friend.

The patient is the innocent Iraqi people. We can agree on this I think. Lots of them are already dead. What kind of doctor is this? If Saddam is cancer, why not just remove him (by the way: who decides who is cancer?). For this we don't need thousands of soldiers. We are so proud of the intelligence services. They could have killed Saddam easily if they wanted to. They didn't. Did you ever think about the reason for this?
Richard Chen  30
08-12-2004 09:48 PM ET (US)
Mr zhao
Ok,"removing cancer by killing the patient."But who is cancer, who is patient? I think Suddam Hussein is most dangerous cancer. He has severely damaged the body of Iraq and would keep damaming it if we do nothing to stop him.Why fellow like you are always blameing the doctor, you are suggesting we should stay aside and seeing the patient dying? Please tell me how, peacefully and mercifully, you would removing the cancer?
Zhao Zheng-Fu  29
08-12-2004 07:10 PM ET (US)
Xiao Chen:

Why only in short term? How and when will the term end? An operation doesn't damage the whole body but this war does. Its like removing cancer by killing the patient.
Richard Chen  28
08-12-2004 06:35 AM ET (US)
 TO Mr ZHAO

The world is more dangerous, maybe, but only in short term,as for long term,Bush's policy made the world safer. You can make the point clear by average Iraqi's attitude to the collapes of Suddam Hussein. It likes you caught cancer, you would take the risk to bear a operation or let the cancer be,to make you die 3-4years later?
Zhao Zheng-Fu  27
08-12-2004 05:46 AM ET (US)
Xiao Chen:

the world is more dangerous now than a few years ago - thanks to the US military. If mainland China would invade Taiwan now, the US has no moral argument against it. Being Chinese doesn't mean you (or me) know more about freedom than others.
Richard Chen  26
08-11-2004 09:48 AM ET (US)

I truly believe that Kevin and the other US soldiers think they are doing the right thing - it also sounds like you believe what you say. I respect that but if I would show gratitude to the US soldiers in Iraq it would send them the wrong message (to continue this senseless war). I am sure that it doesn't make your or my life any safer (on the contrary: this war produces terrorists) to invade a country and kill more than 11,000 civilians. I don't talk about terrorists - I talk about people like you and me. We already mentioned all the dead and wounded US soldiers.

That you feel safer because you believe sources like the one you referred to is good for you - but for what price? How about some safety for the regular guy in Iraq? That's probably not so important for you.... (I hope I'm incorrect).

Just one more word regarding the "think tank" forum. You call it a comprehensive site because there are references to the NYT, AFP and others. OK - if this is an indicator please visit

http://www.aljazeera.com/

They also refer to Reuters, AFP, Washington Times etc. I don't say that I believe everything they write but you also shouldn't believe everything this think tank publishes.

My philosophy is simply gratitude to the military for protecting me from terrorists. I'm sorry you're not grateful.

You denied any "link" between Iraq and terrorism, so I gave you one of many sites discussing Ansar al Islam. It is a comprehensive site, referencing the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, Agence France-Presse, the New Yorker and Newsweek - hardly sources with a pro-war bias.

But this "link" is not really the point. Whether or not "linked" to Saddam or even Al Qaeda, Ansar al Islam are terrorists, and my family is safer with them contained. You're right that I can never thank Kevin and his friends enough.
Brian  23

I got your philosophy: who kills first is right. You don't need proof and you certainly don't need people who are looking for the truth. The "informative" link you gave leads to a page of people who are as trustworthy as any terrorist's website would be.

But let's talk about "gratitude". If you care about our troops and America you shouldn't support to send these kids to hell and offer them "gratitude" in return. They are the ones who get killed - they may come back disabeled. If they come back at all we give them a medal and say "thank you" and leave them for the rest of their lives in a wheelchair. And the really sad part is: it's totally in vain. Well, maybe not totally - maybe the guys who run this forum you referred to reach their goal of a lower price of oil [that's what they say at their site] and other "American interests". Great - then it will be cheaper for us to visit the graves of the killed heroes to show our gratitude.

If someone is pointing a gun at me, I'm going to shoot him before he shoots me. There ain't going to be a trial, and I'm not going to insist on "proof" of terrorist credentials.

Here is an informative link regarding Ansar al Islam, and their connections to Iraq, Saddam and Iran:

How about some gratitude for our military?

thank you for your reply. Let me ask you one thing: if someone would put you on trial and tell the judge that you are "likely linked" to some bad guys who "almost certainly" acted with your approval... would you consider it just to shoot you?

This is just to show you that you argue only with assumptions. It's even clearer when you say "they were plotting our destruction before we got them first". How do you know? Because Mr Bush told you? Wake up, please - you're 40. The funny thing is that I believe that you are really that naive. You assume that I read the New York Times and it becomes reality to you - you assume that there are links between Iraq and al Qaeda and it becomes reality to you.

Do you really believe that the families of killed Iraqis (terrorists and non terrorists) will praise America for the "freedom" they got? Or isn't it more likely that they will hate America and some of them will become "terrorists", too? Do you call this protecting America?

And beware: too much oxygen of freedom may cause brain damage.

Brian -
We Americans indeed owe our military a great debt for protecting us from another terrorist attack on our own soil. Your New York Times doesn't tell you about the Ansar al Islam in the northern part of Iraq -- these were deadly terrorists likely linked to al Qaeda and almost certainly operating with the approval of Saddam Hussein, and they were plotting our destruction before we got them first. Its election season dude - don't be such a sucker for the mainstream media!
Take a deep breath -- suck in the oxygen of freedom -- and then thank the men and women of our military for the opportunity!

Kevin you did a great job. Ipulled it as a reference tool in fact for my writing class. I hope you don't mind. Keep safe Young Bro. Remember the bullets fly both ways and buttons do get in the way. Would really like to talk when you get back Man at fvozenilek@cleodusa.net, or anytime you might want to or need to. I did my time in hell too. Be blessed.

To Sgt.Rock:

most Koreans don't support sending troops to Iraq because they know what war is. It just brings misery and death to people. You shouldn't be proud of Korea's involvement in Vietnam. Even Americans know today that it was wrong to fight this war. It is so sad that these mistakes are made again and again. Your statement "Koreans do not take prisoners." is a disgrace for all Koreans. Use your brain and try to talk and act like a human being.

joe joe -- please explain how the US military in Iraq can protect your family from another 9/11. I'm sorry to say this but we are creating much more terrorists through this war than ever before. I can't believe that there are still people who believe that there was a link between 9/11 and Iraq.

HI Kevin,
I am an Indian and I do not like what Bush and Blair are doing in Iraq. But I do feel for the men and women who are facing so much shit that its unbelievable. I hope and I pray to GOD that soon one day all this will be over and the men and women will go back to their homes in one piece. War is such a shitty thing ... ?????????

I'm astonished! I will never pretend I understand how it must be, how these young soldiers/marines must feel or what is right or wrong about the war. I just want these brave men and women to return safely to their families and for those that don't, I don't want their death to be in vain. I'm proud of our military and your view point here has opened my eyes ever more! thanks for sharing a viewpoint other than the f*ckn news media who want to dehumanize this war.

Dean,

I agree with you entirely, it's nice to see a media person covering what's really important to us and Kevin you are doing a tremendous job!

Sounds as if your brothers division could use a whole lot of support for their efforts in Iraq. I belong to an organization called "4thetroops" in which we do just that, support our heroes who are enduring so much on our behalf with supportive letters, cards and much need care package items. If you can get word to your brother and let him know about the website 4thetroops.net we actually encourage soldiers and their units to sign up for support. In addition there are 300 of us who have officially adopted these soldiers into our families and provide them with encouragement and motivation to help them endure and complete their mission. We also have formed a support group for family members of military personnel and just plain folks like myself who enjoy bringing a smile to a hard working soldiers day.

I hope that you will take the time to visit this website yourself and will be able to get the word out to your brother and encourage anyone in Sadr City to sign up. We welcome our soldiers with open arms.

Kevin,

You are doing a wonderful job. Pleasure to read and see what the troops are really going through. Not sure I can watch anymore network tv cast. There all trying to change the same tire.

Got a little brother in Sadr City with the 1st Cav 2-5. Leon Casey Strickland. More like my son. Would be great to at least see a picture a of him.

Why can't the media cover the real story. The solders. These guys are the real deal. Politicians are not. Take Care Dean Strickland

Good to hear the great news on the front lines and personal observations. Please note that the good people of So. Korea are observing the final goodbye to a fallen citizen at the hands of the terrorist. The point of his capture and death was to deter the South Korean government from sending additional troops (3000) to Iraq. The reasons for this action by the terrorist may not be obvious to many people unfamilure with the Korean military. Having served with the famous Blue Dragon brigade in Vietnam I can attest to there resolve and capabilities. The Blue Dragons of the Royal Korean Marines (RoK Marines) were the most feared force by the Viet Cong. They had a reputation of no quarter and strick law enforcement thru out their area of responsibilities. These unrulely war lords and hoodlums playing terroriest in Iraq have taken notice and do want the Koreans to come the Iraq. When the Rock Marines arrive life as they know it will be over. I one mortar is fired into a camp of Koreans they will seek and destroy to no end untill the whole village or town is standing tall on the streets and will tell where the bad guys are, came from, or went. Koreans do not take prisoners.

It is a pleasure to read your coverage of how our military is doing in Iraq. Your comments really are true felt for me. My son is currently serving as a Marine in the AlAnbar province as a combat engineer doing EOD. As much as I worry about him and those he is with every day, I am encouraged to read about the escapes that they make like you desribe in your article. Thank you for your courage and honesty in reporting the action. All of it.

Just followed the link, and those guys at blackfive are crazy. They're the kind of sheep that let men like Bush and his neocon friends pursue their power-mad agenda. They're actually deluded enough to think they're there to spread "freedom" to the Iraqis (what happened to WMD's I wonder). One idiot was actually complaining how ungrateful the Iraqis are!

Truly this is the kind of reporting that the average American needs to see at least once a week. When we send these guys to fight a war, when a politician says it necessary for them to be there, we absolutely need to know what can happen to the soldiers and how the soldiers themselves feel about what kinds of things happen to them while they're there. I agree with your sentiments, Kevin, when you told the Capt. Bronx about why it was necessary for the media to report on these things. I wish our politicians felt the same way.

I just finished reading http://www.blackfive.net/main/2004/04/taking_chance.html, a blog about a Marine coming home to his final resting place in the middle of America, when I found this story of what it is like in the middle of a convoy that is under attack (the Marine was killed in a convoy incident). Interesting to see the swagger needed by these brave men and women (in the Kevin Sites piece) and then respect given to them when they fall (in the blackfive.net) piece. Glad no one was hurt in Kevin's incident, and my sympathies go out to the fallen.

Till when're these Marines going to constantly dice with death in this manner. I'm very much worried by the fact that if the situation on the ground continue like this, very few of America's sons and daughters will leave to enjoy Iraq's PETRODOLLARS.

There is need to change the strategy in a bid to instal the so called democratic gorvenment in Iraq. Otherwise, the Marines' actions will leave a legacy of violence amongst different religious groups, though they appear to be united with the advent of a common enemy.

May the voice of reason prevail in both Blair and Bush. Let God illuminate his light to these two messrs so that they can stop their madness without delay.

Thank heavens you and the Marines are OK. I hope you have a chance to post more often. My son-in-law is a translator/interpreter, coming home next week for a temporary visit after being in Iraq for over a year. He's signing up for another year there because of the money, but I'm very concerned for him. It's getting mroe and more dangerous...
