I had a friend in the Pentagon, who served in a "sensitive" position and was privy to back-channel information. He informed me that a deal had been cut when our POWs returned from North Vietnam that none of the POWs would be tried for treason for conduct unbecoming. Their reasoning was based on not wanting to cause further national grief over the war. Nixon wanted Vietnam forgotten.

There are a number of "schools of thought" on the issue. Some of the returning POWs wanted their fellow POWs who had colaborated with the North Vietnamese punished. They were convinced that for the good of the nation they should back off--also it seems like everyone breaks evenually or has something they are ashambed over after being a POW for five and six years. (That is for everyone except honorable warriors like Rocky Versace.)

Having said that, I have problems with Senator McCain when he and Senator Kerry returned to Vietam to "normalize" relations with them for Clinton. Photographs of McCain revisiting his prison with his son and hugging the Vietnamese who was in charge of torturing him--bother me. (Mancurian Candidate?)

McCain HAD to of been a major target for the North Vietamese to break--especially his father and grandfather both having been powerful navy admirals. Also--they had many YEARS to break him.

The fact is he is one of North Vietnam's BEST friends in the senate and that REALLY bothers me, especially when I was one of those types who actually had a hand grenade taped to my web gear--that was for me in the event I was wounded. It is difficult for any of us to say what we would have done--but I KNOW I would NEVER hug the man who had tortured me for five yaers--but then again, I would have never returned to my prison WITH my son!

We know there were American traitors who monitored radios for the North Vietnamese and even LEAD NVA patrols in I Corps.. What ever happened to them?
