I have a similar problem wiht my 15inch Ti PB G4 - the fan is running most of the time even on battery. Ths is using the battery and decreasing the time i can use it on battery. Made a nonsence of getting a new one when I upgraded to 10.3.

A few developers over the weekend dug out the reason that the first gen 12-incher is fanning all of the time. Apple has reset the temperature at which the fan will start, probably to cut down on the number of warrantee repairs they are experiencing due to poor heat management in the first version of this model.

I've got a first-gen 12" as well and have noticed the fan running a lot more often when plugged in. I don't generally load the CPU enough to get the fan running at all, so this is unusual.

I installed 10.3.2 and the battery update at the same time, so I can't help tease that one apart.

Eric,

Let us know if this continues. So far I have only been hearing of this problem with first generation 12-inchers and possibly some older TiBook models...

Well, now the fan on my 2nd generation 12" PB is running almost all of the time when AC is plugged in. I am not sure when it started as I was playing music all day and I didn't notice it.

Thanks for that post, Ben. I too installed the Battery Update 1.1 earlier in the day yesterday, before installing 10.3.2. Did you install the battery update before or after upgrading to the new OS?

I'm running 10.3.2 on a first-generation 12" PowerBook G4, and I've been on both AC power and battery with no problems. My fan does not run all the time.

I did apply the Battery update that came out earlier, however.

No evidence of this on mine. Then again, I've spent most of my time since the upgrade in a rather cold machine shop, and the normally-toasty left palm rest is not even warm to the touch.

Eric,

Yeah, I have heard that heat management is better in the new 12-incher. Of course, the fan seldom runs on my first-generation 12-incher, or at least it used to seldom run until 10.3.2. In the past the machine had to reach a temperature in the 140 degree range, using the Temperature Monitor freeware to measure the temp. Now the machine runs its fan no matter how hot it is running. Last night my machine was just 118 degrees inside and it still had the fan whirring away...

I think I'm going to wait a bit on updating my AL15 from 10.3.1. Not that my confidence is shaken, but of late the updates have seen to be a tad flaky.

I have a new 12" PB with DVI and I have not had the fan come at all since the update. I know they made some changes to the new 12" for heat and I wonder if that's why my fan rarely runs.

My wife's 12-inch PowerBook has been doing this for weeks and I'm not sure why. She's also seen a problem where Software Update finds nothing until you reset ignored updates, even though she's not setting updates for ignore. We updated to 10.3.2 last night and the fan was still running this morning.

She leaves the screen open most nights as CivIII crashes when she wakes from sleep. I'm not sure if that makes a difference.

I had read another person's report that his 12" PB's fan was now running non-stop... yeah that baby gets hot, and maybe this is Apple's "fix"?
