Let it snowTired of the end-of-year lists and Christmas shopping? Why not relax with a little snowball fight or hey, just shovel some snow (both are flash games that have nothing to do with books... or ninjas.). Home

I have heard rumours that there will be a new video game/film adaptation.
Pong: the movie. Will Smith & Tom Cruise provide star as Paddle A & B. Danny Devito is slated to play the ball.

I swore I wouldn't let it happen then and I won't let it happen now! R2! Ready the hyperdrive and plot a course for... um... destiny? Home

Oh yeah, as if everyone will be a surgeon one day. Every few years we get a book that celebrates something about pop culture (usually something that makes a lot of money) and the following year the book is forgotten. Every new technology is supposed to revolutionize our life, and after a few years, something else replaces it.
Pop culture makes us smarter? This is, of course, referring to most Americans who, according to their owns surveys, can't name one government department or their own Vice President, can't identify their home state on a map, and think that the sun revolves around the earth. This also refers to the same country whose children rank last among industrialized countries in math and science.
And all that celebration of video games, in a world where only around 25 percent of the global population has access to basic needs like electricity (never mind food and shelter).
So how does pop culture make us smarter? Easy! Americans control significant industries in video games, pop music, movies, and television shows, and sell these to everyone else. Isn't that a smart thing to do?
After that, let's wait a few more years, then someone else will write a book (or video game?) about how ______ (insert new product to sell here) makes us smarter.

Pop culture is making us smarter? Ay caramba!Steven Johnson's Everything Bad is Good for You raises some interesting points. Plus, I just like the sentiment. Give me glass a scotch and hand me that PS2 controller... I have work to do. I had been batting around an idea for a book of collected essays. I knew I wanted the opening to be about video games because I had this sense people were not understanding, on some basic level, how hard they are. A lot of people still think video games are like Pac-Man. And I was going to do a bunch of other contrarian pieces. I thought, well, Ill do something about television, because television has become so much better and nobody talks about that. In fact, in the States theres been this huge debate about television. Its between two sides: one side thinks television, and pop culture in general, is so bad the Feds need to intervene; the other side just thinks pop culture is bad. When I started refuting [those positions], what was supposed to be a collection of disjointed essays actually turned into the most linear of my books. (Best opening line ever: "Although he wears a turtleneck sweater under a blazer in his author photo, Steven Johnson is actually a pretty smart guy.") Home

Book Lovers' Trivial PursuitBookslut reviews Book Lovers' Trivial Pursuit and recommends it for the uber-geeks only. While none of us knew which university Blue attends while spying on Black and White in Paul Auster's Ghost (A: Brown), we all agree that Smoke was a great movie. It's reminiscences like this (in addition to slagging the competition) that make the game work. Overall, I feel vexed, but I enjoy feeling vexed. I think the game has a fine balance of contemporary and classic, at least for English grads who still read the review section. Home

Yoga Death MatchJim Munroe turns his hand to filmmaking. Very funny. I've just finished making a video about the similarities between the ancient Hindu art of spiritual discipline and the rather more modern art of online gaming. Watch the higher self rack up high scores getting to the next level of consciousness in the transcendentally physical world of Half-Life 2: Deathmatch! It's a little over four minutes and change, keep reading for the download links and screenshots. Home

I heard a fly buzz, so I shot itVideo games just got a whole lot hotter, baby. The Game Design Challenge returns for a second year of innovative and provocative on-the-spot game design. Last year, the Game Design Challenge asked three veteran designers to present a concept for a game that told a love story. This year, returning Game Design Challenge champion Will Wright returns to face off against two new competitors. The theme? Design a game around a highly unusual license the poetry of Emily Dickinson. I am so there that my wrists and thumbs are hurting already. (From Clive) Home

Fight Club: the video gameFor losers who can't fight. Maybe if you can forget that the fighting system is not only derivative but boring, and the game breaks just about every rule of Fight Club (inexcusable) you may squeeze some precious minutes of enjoyment out of it. Until you realize that Fight Club stars Brad Pitt and Edward Norton (wisely) left themselves out of the game, and Fight Club novelist Chuck Palahniuk told the developers he wanted no involvement in any way, shape or form in its creation.
