"winterkills" "dukw" hi, paul. sometimes the late season hatchlings are not ready for release if an early winter arrives. the conservation officers sometimes insist we release them. in those cases we "release" them and simply re-admit them to the rehab with a new case number and release them in spring :-) Edited 06-18-2013 05:30 PM

we don't usually trap the ducks, though we may pen up a nest that has eggs. when the eggs hatch we net the mom, who will not usually try to fly away. then it's a scramble to catch all the pre-counted babies. ducklings go in one box, mother in another or she will mash them. if we are short some pre-counted babies we step back until the boxed peepers cause the stragglers to betray themselves. if there are less than 14 ducklings we swing by the rehab to add a few orphans to the family, as long as they are the same age and strength. on release, the ducklings go in the lake first and we let the mom see them before her release. she will usually fly out about 30 feet to land in the water. the ducklings usually leave a wake as they swim to be reunited :-)
