Hi Just a quick note to say hi and pitch shamelessly. Indie artists know that successful MP3 bloggers can be influential in promoting their music, thats why your mail box is full to overflowing every morning. Antiqcool are no different in that respect but if you do like any of the tracks on myspace or garageband and want to feature them in your blog we would of course be very grateful and one good turn deserves another so let us know how we can help. Maybe we could compose and record a free bumper for a radio station or podcast you know of. My apologies for the slightly form message....I hope to spend more time on Tofu Hut soon. Cheers Pete http://www.antiqcool.co.uk

Hi, nice collection of links. Feel free to add my latest project to it: http://whatsthatnoise.org. It's geared towards rare and obscure indie, lo-fi, punk, and experimental music. I also have a Daily MP3 Blogs Aggregator, which will include further customization options soon, including the option to add any feed you like to your personal selection of included blogs.

I had a Bill Withers LP with a song that included the lyrics "Talking to me crazy trying to make me think I'm insane." (I thought). I no longer have the album and can't find that song anywhere. Am I the crazy one, or does that song exist?

hey John,
I adore the Harmonettes, they made a huge impression on me from the day I first heard them (with Doug)in Alabama, with Linda on lead singing Jesus On My Mind - exquisite,unique,jaw-dropping. I last saw them when they reformed briefly in 1999 when my choir was on a program with them in, I believe, Bessemer. Thanks for spreading the word.

Hi, I just stumbled across this site, and it's totally awesome. But I'm curious what yall think about this stuff. is this the kind of music you listen to all the time, or is it kinda more like a hobby? how often do you post mp3s? does the site change very often?

very worthwhile effort on the polk miller material.
you needn't worry about being p.c., the audience you're worried about offending isn't listening.
academic pricing is troublesome, but otherwise it wouldn't be published at at all in the states.
every worthy thing is not profitable.

Dear Tofu,
I've been seeing other meat substitutes. Tempeh can be good if it's steamed and left to marinate for a day, yes, it's true, but TVP makes a good and quick addition to chilis, and seitan (floured and sauteed) goes well in pot pies.
I'm sorry. Really I am. I'm afraid it's just not going to work.

Is Tofu considered a vegetable??? My friends and I are trying to decide who to vote for congress in the 2006 elections. We live in the 10th congressional district of California (Alameda, Contra Costa, Solano, and Sacramento Counties). There isn't much offline info available about the candidates. Their names are Darcy Linn http://www.darcylinn.com , Jeff Ketelson http://www.k4a.net , and Ellen Tauscher http://www.ellentauscher.com . Any advice would be helpful. thanks.

Hi, Thanks for supplying new music on your blog. I like finding out about new talent. I listened to Theo Bleckmann and Teacher's Pet is cute. I'm not feeling Chim Chim Cheree. though. Overall, I don't see what's so great about this guy. Maybe I would have to see him live to appreciate him. He's not bad, he's just not intriguing to me. Oh well.
Keep up the good work.

Hey there, My names Jill and I work at a small Indie label in Toronto called Paper Bag Records. I just came across your site and thought that you might want to check out one of our bands our latest signing called Tokyo Police Club. You can listen to MP3s on their MySpace page: http://www.myspace.com/tokyopoliceclub Judging by some of the bands that you list on your site, youll probably like them. Ill leave the liking or not liking up to you, of course, but isnt it always better to like than to not like? I guess only if something is good…and they are. Thanks! -Jill

A week ago I started my own completely pretentious and arrogant mp3 music-type blogspot sort of thing. It'll be mostly about indie-related bands, but several different genre's will be represented here and it's mostly just to promote artists I really like, rant about music industry type stuff and talk about concerts I've been going to. Feel free to check it out. http://itsnotthebandihateitstheirfans.blogspot.com

Hi, I finally managed to set up a blog on 80s music, with a focus on the early 80s. I already posted some concert pix and some (not live) songs, this will change! As soon as I get a tape player I will have lots of concerts from the first half of the 80s to put online! If you need info on german bands from that era, feel free to contact (or link) me! Greetings from Germany Jörg http://not-rock-on.blogspot.com/

Insofar as I barely understand it, here's the address that blogger is giving me for a feed; it's an atom feed and not RSS. http://tofuhut.blogspot.com/atom.xmlDoes that answer the question? If not, let me know and I'll do my best to get the proper thing up. Wish I were more technically apt with this nonsense...

I was looking for information on Dorothy Love Coates and the Gospel Harmonette's when I ran across your page. I enjoyed reading the post from March of 2005 about the Gospel Harmonettes. Although they are a different group of singers than I was looking for, I am interested in hearing their music. If you can reply that would be great. My e-mail is BrandonandLindsay@yahoo.com. Thanks.

Man, I've really been gone for a little while here! Some quick responses:
Noah, that IS the playmobil set I was talking about! Nice detective work! I suppose I might've imagined the snifter. Maybe it's just that he seemed like an alcoholic to me?
Path, again: your kind words and generous contributions are beyond belief. Thenk yew vewy mudge.
To everyone hyping, I'm trying to keep track of it and am at work on revising the blogroll.
The music from the hard drive never returned and I'm only slowly reloading the old backup... but only because I'm so constantly inundated with new music everyday. I hope all of you are just as blessed!
I'll try and see you soon?

Regarding your Playmobil post (10/11/05): You said you were looking for a pic of the depressed man set - is this it? http://store.playmobilusa.com/is-bin/INTER...Puppenhaus_us&PLS=0I see a lot of the items you mention, although no brandy snifter. Recently, when I asked my brother what to get my nephew for his 3rd birthday, my brother said Playmobil and it reminded me of your post. When I went to the store, I found all sorts of great bank robbers (with stolen bundles of Euros, of course) but couldn't help buying him the construction workers w/ porta-john: http://store.playmobilusa.com/is-bin/INTER...US_storefront&PLS=0As always, thanks for the great spiffy.

I shoulda done this long ago, but when I checked into the tofu hut today, you were doing blue grass! Shades of my 60s, folk music background. So, I sent you some money because I could. Have you done Flatt & Scruggs, as well? I always thought they were better than the Monroes, in spite of their having had a famous tv theme song.
And, are there any legal downloads of good bluegrass? It's such good morning music, and my old lp stuff is long gone. And, the only thing I really want in return is a copy of the picture of you begging for funds. Cutest thing ever.
I hope you're doing well.

Has anyone heard Horse Fabulous the second album by Liverpool-based band The Stands? www.the-stands.com I can not believe how incredible this album is. Their label Echo Records folded the month the album was released and it got virtually no promotion but it has got to be the best thing released last year. To call it derivitive really misses the trick: John Peel said it sounds like 'all of your favorite bands playing at one time.' Apparently lead singer Howie Payne broke the band up right after the album came out and went into seclusion. It seems to be gathering a weird cult following. Does anyone know anything about this? Here are some downloads: http://ickmusic.blogspot.com/2006/01/sunday-with-stands.html

Thursday night's R.Star show at Joe's Pub was a blowout success! The show was sold out and a crowd of approximately 80-100 people crowded outside where scalpers benefited from the overwhelming demand.
R.Star included three strings players to perform an unforgettable "Losing Your Memory," and former Stage (Maverick Records) bandmate Justin Parker pounded the Djembe during R.Star's chilling acoustic cover of "Head Like a Hole" (Nine Inch Nails).
If you missed the show, please join us for R.Star's next show on January 17th at Pianos. The New York Times has started listing R.Star's shows, and we would greatly appreciate your hometown press support as well.

Funny you should link to that weird PKD-like "You have the power to change your life", or I should get it only now, when there's something in the papers about a man lying about having lost a daughter in the tsunami... hard to keep up with all these types of fake news!
Let's hope yr hard disc probs are another kind of fake news - the data people get it all back. I think it's pretty sure they can, but the cost is prohibitive.. tell us, we need to know - we all go there, and have maybe been there..

Thanks for the memories. As a child (I'm 66) my family had an old wind up Victrola (record player for you young guys) and some old 78RPM records (No, I don't know where they are now.). The only song I can remember from the is "Feet Don't You Fail Me".
I got a good laugh over your ambivalence on the word "huggin'" in the second verse you posted. I think I nearly wore the record out trying to make sure what that word was.....I think it was more graphic than "huggin'".
Thanks again.

Pablo told me about this write up and i went and looked for it before someone told me where. its been years since i thought about that time/ music. but , yeah, it was an incredible time for musicians in ZYC. i was also involved, at the time, with a proto-punk/funk band called "The Dance" which released 2 albums on Statik Records out of London. in the years since J. Walters death pablo and i have kept in touch and are seriously considering a joint recording project in the near future. but NOTHING will replace that certain conglomeration of social times and musical inspiration as was that band . The new format will be an ongoing history of 50's R&B, starting in 1950 and going through the years up through '59. Once I get there (I'm not sure yet how long that's going to take), we may go back to pre-50's or do something else completely different. I hope that a few of the regular visitors I picked up earlier this year are still checking in. I'd toss up another song as a little bonus like I did with the Little Willie John last time, but I'm working on a backup computer right now and can't get to my mp3's. Once my computer issues are worked out, I'll be relaunching with some great stuff, so please do keep coming back. If anyone is out there, feel free to say hi in the comments section, it's nice to hear from other lovers of THE REAL THING!

I just heard B.B. King sing "I don't get around much any more" with Duke Ellington's band. He didn't even play guitar but I loved it. Anyone know where I could get this recording?

enjoyed the tunes and info....very sweet and innocent, almost childlike in the simplicity. Right now I think we all need things a little less complicated and less chaotic .Porch rocking, toe tapping and lemonade are oldies that are still golden...the classics last through all the fads...Nashville feels the pain of NOLA and the gulf shores. Hi Neil, You all actually think that I 've hidden or slept over or out ot drink, But , NO. I vever Hide from myself or my riends keep lifttin'me up, I know lwhat was hapened t to my PC last night . It's not from them, all from you, and listen Neil, - I never use the word "Please" no more, Today -
Lastnight, Me and my parents - especially my father, finally we were apart. I bealive that You could understand what I'm talkin' about. Last 5days sat infront of my PC, and talked, discussed with you, - without sleepin' without eatin', without workin'. So I tryed to explained what I've been doin via this PC, with the "Languege" they might be able to understand. But, I mistook. I've realized that just like I said before you, "The worrds actually kill someone" Guess I am the real murder. My parents is really really worry 'bout my helth - Body, mental. My father- now lost his job, this is true. My mother- everyday 9 to5 workin, almost 60years old. But Mother cooked every day for family with her realiy tired body. Now, I'm typin' to you, all day long with my father is next to my room. No wonder, he really think 'bout my self "What's my sun doin' with PC? " All I wanted is feeling better my family with what I've learned by my self. Guitar,Hip-Hop creating I wasn't "DJ", English, PC but Internet, stilllearning, I don't know much... Guitar- when I was 12, my dream was succer player, my friend had great skills and he finally, No, Stop talikin'to him. anyway, Iwas really depressed but music saved me, and choose to play guitar. Now, I found my mistake, my lie, Who bought "Guitar"? My father did, Not my money. This room that I'm typin' to you, Who bought? - My parents. I am really stupid. Neil, Today I gotta go to my Doctor, already booked, justa a minuite, I'll ccall him now, Thanks for waitin'. Give me 3hours for me. I like the question you posed today (about favorite commercial jingles.) It made me consider a number of seperate questions, including the, "why does it bug me so much when a band I really enjoy suddenly sells a song to some corporation to promote SUVs, or shampoo or canned soup?" Case in point, I am a big Stereophonics fan and sort of enjoyed the fact I was immensely satisfied with a band that was barely noticed on this side of the Atlantic... low and behold, one day while watching somethign or other, there is "High As The Ceiling" promoting some Nissan(?) SUV. I suppose they have a right to sell there material and broaden their audience... but still it irks me. On a simlar note, I probably wouldn't have discovered "Breathe" by Telepopmusik had they not been so formidably featured in those Mitsubishi commercials from a couple years back, so I suppose I am, 1. a hypocrite and 2. proving why some of these acts should use commercials as a secondary distribution network. Second point, I read an article recently that was talking about the jingle being a dead art, as it is cheaper nowdays to use existing music (especially by artists who are trying to break into new markets) in lieu of hiring jingle writers to specifically pen a diddy about a product. Thus the sudden influx of Britpop and Electronic acts into the advertising space. Anyway, best jingle on it's own? In LA there is a company called Empire Carpets, and their diddy must have been written in the late 1940s or 1950s. (It just features the phone number, and company name sung accapella in that 40s manner.) "800-588-2300 Empire"... talk about legs, they still use it today. Anyone who has lived in LA for anytime at all will know exactly what commercial I am talking about... So there ya go.

i don't really get offended by the lyrics themselves as it is a writers expression of their anger, aggressiveness and emotion. i do get offended and taken aback when a moron takes the lyrics as truth and fact and act out on what the message is saying to them. people should know the difference between a single person's feelings and thoughts as art or expression and what the truth is really about. they are not the same!

Hello. was just googling to see if anyone had mentioned the survey online and came across the comments below.
mac_daddy- i used surveymonkey because it seemed to be the easiest way to produce a survey quickly- for whatever reason, my uni didn't have any dedicated facilities to do such a thing online. i did include a contact address with the survey (mp3blogproject@gmail.com)- the reason i didn't use my uni address l.pawley@uea.ac.uk is because it was easier to keep the correspondence related to this project seperate from my personal correspondence. sorry if the survey caused any concern, but i'm a little resentful at somebody deciding it was bogus and posting that in public.
Tuwa- i appreciate your point about some of the questions, in retrospect there should have been more 'don't know' options in there in particular. Yes, it should absolutely be the right of respondents to be inspect survey data- once the survey is closed (and as mentioned in my initial emails and in the survey's last page) i'll be posting the results online for anyone who wants to have a look. the final thesis will also be published online in september, under a creative commons licence.
Apologies if anyone got the impression they were been emailed by a particularly sneaky marketeer/RIAA type. i can only protest my innocence and offer to send some of my highly questionable under-grad essays to anyone requiring more evidence! thanks to everyone who's taken part so far for their help and comments

That looks like a legitimate survey to me. That said: some of the questions are very poor (e.g. assuming "yes" or "no" when "I don't know" could as easily apply) (has anyone criticized me for ethics violations? how should I know?]). Also, in at least one case the survey-taker assumed an action would have only one cause or condition when it might have several (e.g. posting some files legally and some illegally). Including contact information is always a plus when doing research; without it, I wonder if Loz Pawley thinks his respondents have truly given informed consent. It should be the respondents' right to look up the results of the research they've taken part in, even if they can't identify themselves in the writeup (and, in many cases, to prevent doing harm to the respondents, you'd really not want them to be able to). Loz Pawley apparently lives in the U.K. near Brixton, and does have an affection for music: see http://www.purr.org.uk/jetioaa.html; also see http://www.martinhannett.co.uk/frame.htm and click on "guest book" (they've buggered the site so you can't link to it directly without getting forwarded back--rude, rude, rude).

Bloggers beware as I received the following email from someone called Loz Pawley@mp3project here it is -------------------------------------------------------------- Hi- I'm writing to you because as far as I can tell, you run/write for an mp3 blog. Thanks, I like them a lot. So much in fact, that I'm writing my Master's thesis on them, trying to work out if mp3 blogs have an emerging ethics, what relationship you guys have/want to have to the music industry, and basically why you do what you do. In order to do this, I'm asking you all to spend about 10 minutes filling in an online survey giving some details/opinions about your music-blogging activities. When the results are in, I'll publish them online and invite feedback as I'm writing up the project. Hopefully, the eventual work will be a good resource with regards the changing content/role of the mp3 blog, and give people a bit of insight into how the community as a whole is thinking. the survey can be found here: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=248531093899if you can spare me a bit of time to take part, I'd be incredibly grateful. the last page of the survey lets you remain anonymous if you wish, so your privacy is assured. any questions please feel free to contact me at mp3blogproject@gmail.com . Thanks for your time Loz Pawley mp3blogproject@gmail.com ------------------------------------------------------------ No doubt this is bogus and if you take a look at the survey questions there is no way this is a student completing a Thesis. Reasons why not to trust them. 1. No mention of where they are studying 2. The email address is not from their college/uni 3. The questions are based at surveymonkey.com, which anyone can do. Personally I think it's someone trawling for marketing info or dare I say it's someone from the RIAA. So my advice music bloggers don't reply and don't fill out nthe questionnaire.

Hi, I've been following your blog for quite a while now, but I was too lazy or distracted to link you up until now. You're now officially linked up from http://www.knobtweakers.net/. Knobtweakers is relatively new, but it quickly climbed up the ranks, and it's now perhaps one of the top 10 Mp3 blogs in terms of audience and influence. PR6 in Google (just like Tofu Hut). Enjoy the link, and please link back if you like the site. =)

Hey Mitch. You have to pay to access a hosting service. You upload the songs from your computer via FTP to the hosting service's server, where people will download the songs. You'll be given a website that will hold all your files and you can then reference the URL for each individual file, either on pages hosted by said hosting service or on any other page (say, blogspot). Hosting runs between about a hundred bucks for a year or about fifteen bucks per month for something like 30 gigs of bandwidth (bandwidth equals the amount of times that the file is downloaded times the size of the file, capice?). I use Racknine for my hosting (they're over on the right of my page) and am quite happy; there's all manner of good and cheap hosting out there. Best of luck hacking it out and let me know when you finally have a page up!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: New! Anthem for Peace song by Greg Jones climbing global charts as accolades mount! Cleveland, OHIO (USA) "WOW'...'BEAUTIFUL'...' possibly the most important musical message of today'! These are a few of the responses regarding the hot new Maxi-Single CD recording entitled GOD BLESS THE WORLD-WHILE YOU BLESS AMERICA (A.K.A.... Not Just America) written, produced and performed by Cleveland, Ohio native GREG JONES. With a We are the World 'feel', this special release is a unique blend of AC, easy listening, soul and inspiration combined with a powerful message of peace and harmony. A section of the song's lyrics reads 'God bless the world...not just America...God Bless the whole wide world...so our kids can live in harmony...God bless the world'! The Maxi-Single, released by ORVILLE RECORDS is garnering exciting response through top digital music websites in the U.S, Britain, Finland, Germany and recently entered the Australian Easy Listening Top 100 Music Charts at #8 with a bullet! Also, the anthem entered the UK Soft Rock Top 100 Music Charts at #7 and then climbed to #2!! Orville Records also recently inked a deal with two of the world's largest web distributors, MusicNet and AMG for additional web distribution through top music sites such as AOL MusicNet, Yahoo Launch, Virgin Digital, FYE Download, MSN Music, ClearChannel, Amazon and others. In addition, GOD BLESS THE WORLD is currently being 'spotlighted' on Vitaminics International in Denmark, Netherlands and Sweden. Jones has also been 'Artist of the Week' on the ever-popular,world reknown SonicGarden Music site for the past number of weeks ! Internet radio giant, Live365, the world's largest network of online radio stations, has signed on and is 'special featuring' GOD BLESS THE WORLD through close to 2000 web radio stations worldwide. Commercial radio is fast catching wind of this special release and is next in line while experts are declaring GOD BLESS THE WORLD-While You Bless America a future classic! With over 200 unreleased songs under his belt, songwriter Greg Jones explains his inspiration for this special recording. 'I would turn on the news each day and see how so many world leaders resort to war as a means of settling conflict, as if human life is expendable. It would make me sick. They always say that if you want to see a change you have to do something, whatever you can, even when you're just one person. I've always been inspired by the powerful messages of greats like John Lennon, Bono and Bob Dylan so I did what I could do. I wrote a song. Jones selected one of the hottest new studios in Cleveland, Ohio, Ante Up Audio to record this special project. The anthem was co-produced and engineered by old friend Bruce Seifert, who has recorded with Jones in the past, and music tracks performed by Michael Seifert (his son) who further enhanced Jones' music. Both Bruce and Michael are highly acclaimed Award Winners in the music industry. 'We go back over 20 years. Michael used to run around Bruce's studio touching all the knobs on the board when he was like five years old. It was just great working with them again, states Jones. Promoting a song of Peace isn't normally very easy. You have a few folks out here believe it or not who are actually anti-peace. That's why it is up to those of us who are pro-peace, to do everything we can to promote the musical message of Peace. I'm so very thankful for the response worldwide that the anthem is receiving. It's great how so many people just love the song ... and the snowball effect has been incredible!' ***This is a special release in that a portion of proceeds will go to spouses of lost troops through Red Cross. For more info contact Orville Records via e-mail at orvillerecords@aol.com or call 216/486-9688. Visit:www.godblesstheworldonline.com # # -30- # # To see more do AOL or Google search...type-in 'greg jones anthem for worldwide peace'. Thank You! p.s. Can the wonderful world of blog help us spread the message?

I write for a blog called Crooked Timber(www.crookedtimber.org). Most of our posts are about politics or academia, but we occasionally write about music and the arts. Tomorrow, I'm going to write a thread about music, and I thought that it might be nice to ask my favorite mp3 bloggers to play along with our regular gang of commenters. (I've invited about ten other mp3 bloggers; I don't know if any will respond.) You probably get a lot of these sorts of invitations, and there's absolutely no obligation to respond, but it might be fun. If you respond on your blog, I'll be very happy to put up a link.
The question that I'm going to ask will go something like this:
"Imagine that I've been asked to start a new satellite radio station. We'll be playing songs that should have been huge hits, but weren't. I'm looking for songs from any period that you liked the first time you heard them, songs that are immediately catchy and pleasurable, songs that would please your coworkers rather than the clerk at the local independent record store. The artists could be obscure or famous, but the songs should not be in regular rotation on terrestrial radio stations.
There are a lot of buried 'Hey Ya!'s, 'Tainted Love's, and 'You Shook Me All Night Long's out there. Help us find them. Bonus points if you can think of a popular song that more-or-less shares the appeal of your obscure song."
Anyway. If you would like to participate, I'd love to have any contribution; if you don't have the time, you should know that I'm a big fan of Tofu Hut.
You can write me back at Ted.Barlow at gmail.com.
Best,
Ted Barlow

new to this all...and as much as I try to look at other music blogs, the only name that pops out in my head is 'Tofu Hut' and so I've been coming back.
I read below a mention of Mogwai. I'd like to say that they're the forefathers of post-rock, but that's not true --it may be close, but definitely not fact. I'd also like to say they are reigning in the orchestral/cinematic realm. Also not true. However, they are mind-bendingly gorgeous and compelling. I love everything about them. As you said, not as cute as Interpol, but charming, silly and warm all in one. If you like them, try Explosions in the Sky and A Silver Mt. Zion. Maybe I'm being presumptuous because you already seem to know this? But I figured it's worth a shot!
warmly, kp x

Dear Forky,
Just wanted to drop you a line. I program a radio show every other week on KAOS (here's the plug: www.kaosradio.org). It's on Tuesday nights at 11pm over here (which would be Wednesday mornings at 2am in Jersey). I assume you've either heard of, or are quite heavily involved with, WFMU, which in my opinion is the greatest station in the nation, including the one I work at.
Anyway, I wanted to thank you for posting such an exhaustive mp3 blog list on Monkeyfilter, and can't tell you how many long hours I've spent since November 15 just crawling through the plumage. Mp3 blogs have made me excited about music again, and have given me a lot of outstanding material for the radio show, as well as something to share with other audio super-geeks as myself. I'm thrilled that the hidden history of pop and rock music is being kept alive through sites like The Tofu Hut and the ones you referred.
Anyhoo, just felt like sending you a fan letter. Thanks for the great work, and please keep it up! It's led me to a lot of great places lately, and I hope it'll keep the vacation going.
Take care and happy holidays.

I have a blog. I know you don't care. Maybe you would if you read it. Focusing on Canadian bands you probably haven't heard of yet (for now), you can be cooler then pitchfork and find out about the new Arcade Fire today. or tommorow. or even the day after that.

Help! I am looking for a recording of Glenn Gould\'s \"So you want to write a fugue?\" to download, preferably gratis as I am low on funds. Gould is sort of a hero of mine and I would really love to have this recording. Thanks so much.

hello mr./mrs. tofu and/or residents of the tofu hut.. i looked all around the place and didn't see a "no solicitors" sign or a scary tofu dog, so i'd like to introduce myself... my name is blue t-shirt, and my product (which is totally free of cost and obligation) is http://www.bluetshirt.ca/ . most importantly, it hosts a collection of my mp3s. i make electronic music of a familiar style, but with a unique perspective. i'm really at ends when it comes to describing it, but people are often surprised how easy it is to enjoy. i extend an invitation to everyone out in internet-land to visit the site and download the delicious delights displayed. for a short while (i.e. indefinitely), preview the 3-dimensional guestbook of the 22nd century - the scatterboard! go see what all the fussin's about TODAY! Enjoy! peace and love, blue t-shirt

Hi, Tofu Guy -- Thanks for sticking me on your blogroll. I guess I'll wind up in your messy eclectic section. I got inspired by this whole MP3 blogging thing after I did my first-ever-at-age-37 DJ set at Burning Man. I purposefully played NO ELECTRONICA (not that there's anything wrong with that...) and a whole host of people thought it was amazing and begged me for CDs. You can see the set at http://www.entroporium.com/bmanset.htm. So in the end, I think that's what my blog will look like, that kinda stuff in slow motion over weeks & weeks. I'm just trying to spread the word about my favorites and my 35+ years of obsessive listening. If you have suggestions, I'd be glad to hear them. I hope I can keep you as entertained as you've done for me. By the by, you're "How To MP3Blog" list is dead-on. I'd come to a lot of the same conclusions, and it was nice to see that I was in the ballpark. How soon until the Attorney General starts going through the aggregators and busting us one by one? Cheers, Shawn

Hi there
I'm a Newbie
If you are interested in extended versions, (fan)remixes, rarities & links from the 70's, 80's & 90's (mostly) check out my new blog at dreamtimemix.blogspot.com
Right now I host an extended version of David Bowie's "This Is Not America" (my own "remix" - mostly sourced from the Disconet Version)
I post only every week or two as I only have 10MB of Hosting available right now and most of the tracks fill this up rather quickly.
Hope You find something
Cheers
...and thanx for sharing all the great music

Bad: HR4077 Passed the House http://downhillbattle.org/node/view/358HR 4077 passed in the House this afternoon. This major label dream-law would send people to jail for sharing 1,000 songs, or just one unreleased album. That's right, up to 5 years in jail for sharing one album. Please write your congressperson and demand that this change. It is not in the Senate yet. Do some research kiddos and make sure this does not pass into law.

hey john! nice stuff up there... a couple of things. 1. my favorite Rosetta Tharpe song is Everybody's Gonna Have a Wonderful Time Up There, with the aptly named Dependable Boys in the background. you got that one? 2. You credit a writer for Why I like Roosevelt, but i remember dad saying that there is a dispute about the authorship: two different guys claim it. were you aware of this? 3. how do i post a comment directly to a particular music post? love you. jols

Well, hopefully its just me that bores you…. a tool rod working stiff who posted a political rant on a music message board in which the word poppycock was used. Im bored too though. Bored of the predictability of college campuses, music blogs, right wing radio…etc. No matter where I go, I can predict the ideas, views and philosophies like a wind up doll. Just gets crusty. Its like Vince McMan controls American discourse. I dont go around posting this crap every where I go and obviously its not some kind of original idea either. Just that I had spent the day on college campus and then listened to talk radio on the way home. So penguin-walk your ass back to suburbia or So Ho and make sure the other birds are of the same feather.

FDR was a great president. I rate him the best followed by Abraham Lincoln, then Ronald Reagan. Each changed the USA or the world.
John Kerry is the poorest, possible person the Democrats could run for President.
Bush will win in a landslide.

Hey, my name is Steven May & Im a rabidly anybody but bushite musician. I recently put my feelings about the shrub into a song. Its called Yabba Dubya Doo, and it features Dubbin Dubya and myself sharing vocal duties. (Dubya saying inspirational things like your enemy is not surrounding your country, your enemy is ruling your country. -- all Dubya snippets come from his 2003 State of the Union address) If I had to pigeon-hole the style Id say rap/rock, but I dont have to so try to forget....... The song is available for free download and dissemination @ www.yabbadubyadoo.com . Please, take a minute and give it a listen. I have faith youll like it. Its a catchy ditty and has a lot to say (in rap/rhyme cadences) about all the things that scare the shit out of me (& a FEW others I know) about the last 4 years...and the terrifying prospect of 4 more under Son of Bush and his handlers. Give it a listen. You wont be sorry....promise.
In solidarity, -Steven May (of Dubbin Dubya & the Steven Mays)

New here and absolutely love what you do...minus your shortsighted position on Iraq. I know this is not a political forum, but I just can't help it. I am for the liberation of people from evil and murderous despots anywhere in the world; even ones that got a disgusting American "reach around" in the 80's. I mean, why not link a site complaining of German civilians killed during World War II? How come everyone these days who has the vision to create great art or the aesthetic courage to introduce amazing art forms ironically spews the same tired take on politics? Even worse, why are they so against discourse and exchange of ideas on the issue? I cant go to anywhere without hearing the same poppycock. As a sidebar, why are college towns so lacking of intellectual diversity? Am I a Republican? Will my friends disown me? What channel is Fox News? Im shutting the blinds right now.

I just remembered a well-known french "drunk" song that you might want to check out. It's from Noir Désir, whose songs are sometimes in english as it's the case here. The album is called "Tostaky" ("Tostaky" is a shortcut for "Todo esta Aqui" - ie. "everything is here") and the song is wisely called "Sober Song" ...

This is one of my favorite music blogs. I can tell that you put a lot of thought into the song selections you make rather than turning it this into a big free-fer-all of the latest tunes (which I do enjoy from other blogs, but this is a wonderful change of pace and adds some variety to my listening experience). Especially loved Langston Hughes, The Golden Gate Jubilee Quartet, Kitty Gallagher, and the Bulgarian Women's Choir out of all I've heard here so far. Thanks so much for doing this!

You have a great site. I like how you organize the tracks by themes, which allows you to post a wide variety of genres, thereby drawing connections between seemingly disparate styles of music. I loved the Abbey Lincoln track; I had never heard her before and I am definitely going to track down some of her records. It was great to compare her track with the Coltrane version. Very informative.
Keep up the great work.

Big fan of the blog. Stop by, sample and listen a couple times a week. Nice change of pace from most mp3 blogs, laden with electronica and flavor of the week indie bands. Keep up the good work.

Sorry i would have written earlier but just figured out where to leave a message. i love your blog and visit nearly every day , mainly to see what great music file you have uploaded as i am a sucker for such things. i love the accapella stuff but prefer novelty songs so anything with yodelling and chicken noises is always good. I have a link on my blog to yours. http://floberlob.blogspot.com/go and have a look.havent figured out how to upload music files yet but will eventually i'm sure. any tips greatly appreciated.

I heart David Cross. He's dreamy and those clips from his show are totally boss. Not only am I entirely envious of what sounds like an amazing show, but I don't normally talk like this; frankly, don't know why I've started. Something in the water? ALSO, happy happy birthday. Hope it too was boss (2 days late, and that despite your rockin' mom's reminder. where is my head these days?)

Hi all. New to the blogging with mp3 goodies scene and just saying hi. Great site. Also wanted to add I tried to send forksclovetofu a tune earlier and a request for the "messed up" cd through dropload, but have no idea if I did it correctly since I've never used it before. I'll check back now and again, this stuff gets addicting!

Tofu Hut Man, you are the god of the music blogs. So I'm loving this Peter Dizozza stuff - not something I would ever have heard had I not downloaded it from you. BUT! It reminds me of an incredible Minneapolis band that I think is even more incredible - they're called A Series of Clicks and Beeps. They sound like Peter would if he had some prog musicians behind him - and the tunes are fantastic. Here is their website: http://www.aseriesofclicksandbeeps.com/. Download their 3-song demo - every one is a keeper. I've met them once but have no personal connection, in case you're wondering. OK - keep up the great work.

Maybe you could also complain to Apple about not having .ogg support for iTunes.
A word of warning: there is a 3rd-party plugin for ogg support for iTunes. Do not try it. I tried it with only a few hundred oggs, and it crashed my compy. It (the plugin) is very slow & inefficient (winamp handles thousands of oggs and mp3s without a problem).

Nice Tuvan music. FYI, though: throat-singing isn't unique to Tuva. The Canadian Inuit also sing this way. Actually, it is a wonderful thing to see in perfromance, as two people (usually women, it seems to me) stand face to face, with noses less than inches apart, and sing together in long improvisational performances. Fantastic.

Hm, none of the throat-singing links work.
Also, some rather late comments. Looved the Lagaan tracks and Baaba Maal's. Turns out I had looked for some of Baaba Maal's CDs in my town before, but I'm not exactly in a metropolitan area & couldn't find any. Maal's approach to guitar reminds me of Ali Farka Toure's, but I think Maal's is somehow more accessible, though the music is also less traditional (/because/ it is?)

Thanks so much for the Bulgarian choral pieces. I've loved that style of singing for a long time - if you want to hear more, there are some pieces in Isao Takahata's 1991 film "Only Yesterday", and on Yoko Kanno's 1998 album "Song to Fly".

John, I don't know Hibbler or several of the other artists you have listed and will be in touch shortly about trading for that CD. I'm curious.

Yes, on second listen, definitely not Annie Ross. The tone's very close to Blossom Dearie, but sounds different to me - a little lower and flatter. The jive tape is available to all and sundry; just shoot me a message at johbus@allmusic.com with something / anything to trade. Ditto your thoughts on the Four Vagabonds; one of my other favorites are the Three Keys. They have a volume on the Classics label (1932-1933) that's very wonderful. Speaking of political and hep as hell with smooth vocal flow and swingin' sounds, I almost thought you described Al Hibbler! (Okay, not so smooth...) I'd love to see him get his due too; check out a few of his early-'50s classics like Stormy Weather, Honeysuckle Rose, Summertime, Ol' Man River or On a Slow Boat to China (he has two nice volumes on Classics). Keep up the great work!

Yeah, that Annie/Pleasure Sings album is referenced in the site as the disc most of these tracks are pulled from. Still, I don't think that's Annie Ross on that track; the vocal stylings are different from what I'm used to from her. I'll be posting Annie's two big hits later on; interested readers can compare the tracks to see what they think. Four Vagabonds (possibly my favorite band), Ink Spots and Mills Brothers highlights will also show up here afore too long. What would I have to do to get a copy of that mix, John? Looks pretty good.

I believe the vocalist with King Pleasure is Annie Ross; she shared a 1952 album with him, though most are separate performances from what I remember. The site looks great from what I've seen so far. I love jazz and I love vocalese, but jive is what's really getting me going right now, so if you'll forgive the space, here's my ultimate jive tape:
1) Oooh! Look-A-There, Ain't She Pretty The Charioteers 2) Fit as a Fiddle The Three Keys 3) Swing Gate Swing The Four Ink Spots 4) Stop That Dancin' Up There Harry "The Hipster" Gibson 5) "Murder" He Says The Four Vagabonds 6) Nobody's Sweetheart The Mills Brothers 7) Nuts to You The Cats and the Fiddle 8) It Takes a Long Tall Brown Skin Gal The Four Blues 9) Keep a Knockin' Nora & Dell 10) Saturday Night Fish Fry Pearl Bailey & Moms Mabley 11) Darktown Strutters' Ball Loumell Morgan Trio 12) Let the Good Times Roll Louis Jordan 13) I Like to Riff King Cole Trio 14) Dinah The Cole Brothers 15) Undecided The Dandridge Sisters 16) Sentimental Gentleman from Georgia The Boswell Sisters 17) The Lady's in Love With You Slim & Slam 18) Bow-Wow-Wow Deek Watson & the Brown Dots 19) Hit That Jive Jack King Cole Trio 20) Vamoose The Striders 21) What Did He Say The Deep River Boys 22) Jumpin' Out The Four Aces 23) Dry Bones The Delta Rhythm Boys

Cannonball Adderley has this number called "Experience in E" which starts off at a slow simmer but gets quite good. the music at the end of /L.A. Confidential/ (as they drive off) is similar in sound, key, phrasing, etc., but is not it.
I first heard the tune on vinyl at the college I used to attend and I've never forgotten it, but I've been unable to find the same recording since then. There is a live recording available on CD, but it's not the same. :-) Worth looking into.
