Hello, we have a Carl Perkins funded project that involves transitioning GED students into college (credit) technical programs. We have been up and running for about 9 months or so. What tips, ideas, resources might you have for beginners like us. Also, do you have knowledge of anyone else who is working specifically to transition ABE/GED students into technical credit programs. You can email me back at craig.follins@hccs.edu
Thanks

Hi Craig, Our programs really work with students who have already received their GED's. I would encourage you to look through the college transition web site: http://www.collegetransition.org/We have many resources posted on counseling and curriculum for nontraditional adult learners. Here are some quick tips though: 1) get familiar with the college's placement test 2) know the gaps between the GED test and the placement test 3) include skills such as note taking skills, study skills, time and stress managment skills 4) include general college survival skills such as getting around the campus (locating the library, the tutoring center, financial aid office)and knowing vocabulary (bursar, registrar). Many of these ideas can be found on our web site. I would also encourage you to join the National College Transition Network (NCTN). Its goal is to support ABE staff, programs and states in establishing and strengthening ABE-to-college transition services through technical assistance, professional development, collegial sharing, advocacy and increased visibility for this critical sector of the adult basic education system. To JOIN click on: www.collegetransition.org/join.html Hope this helps.

****NEW WEB SITE FOR ADULT STUDENTS***** We recently launched a web site to help adult learners nagivate the process of going to college. www.collegeforadults.org will guide first time adults who are ready for college through the process of applying to college and being successful while enrolled. The website is set up like a college campus, with buildings representing the sort of departments and classrooms a student would find on a college campus. Each building contains classes to help the student understand the admissions process, find money to pay for tuition, fees, and supplies, and brush up on reading, writing, and math. The student will also find tips to make the whole college experience the best it can be. Of course, it's free! http://www.collegeforadults.org

The National College Transition Network made a strong impression at the Annual COABE Conference in Houston, Texas. Nearly all of the presentations were standing room only. If you were unable to attend COABE this year or if you were unable to find a spot in the room - don't worry all of the presentations have been posted: http://www.collegetransition.org/profdev/strands/2006.htmlIf you have any questions or would like to request additional materials, please contact me drao@worlded.org or Cynthia Zafft czafft@worlded.org Thanks, Deepa

Deepa, I really like the new web pages for adult students with transition information. I hope you don't mind that I provided a link to it from my web site. I think it is very, very useful.
