The Department of Theatre, Film and Creative Writing at the University of British Columbia invites applications for the following part-time instructional position:

Nonfiction Instructor

The successful candidate will teach at the Graduate level in the Optional Residency MFA Program in Creative Writing. The successful candidate must be a working writer, have expertise in nonfiction writing, in particular literary essays and magazine writing, and have teaching and professional publishing experience, preferably including two or more books. Instructors are expected to teach at least one workshop of up to twelve students, as well as being available for individual student project supervision. Instructors will teach at a distance, other than the summer residency, and are not required to live in or near Vancouver.

The Department of Theatre, Film and Creative Writing at UBC is unique in Canada, with 28 full-time faculty and numerous part-time faculty and guest artists. Each of the Department's Programs has a national and international reputation for excellence, strong undergraduate and graduate degrees, and is a significant centre for research and production.

The Optional Residency MFA Program is a groundbreaking distance-education version of the existing residential MFA degree, the first in Canada. Students study by distance education during the September – April academic year, and attend a ten day residency each summer on the UBC campus.

All faculty positions are subject to funding. The University of British Columbia hires on the basis of merit and is committed to employment equity. We encourage all qualified persons to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents of Canada will be given priority.

Those interested should submit a letter of application, a current CV (including email address and telephone numbers) and a published example of their work (no more than 25 pages) by email to Andrew Gray angray(at)interchange.ubc.ca. Complete applications must be received by May 26, 2006. Work will begin with some participation in the July 2006 residency, and continue with teaching in September 2006 for the regular academic year.

I don't have any details except what's on the website. I found the posting by accident while looking for something else on the website. There doesn't seem to be any info about the current writer in residence, so it might be a new position for them.

hi janine, do you know if they are looking for someone who will do specific programs--such as run a reading series, workshop with students, and so forth--or if they are looking for someone to just be there as a resource/presence, and write. thanks for any info. cheers,

The catch is there's only two latte shops in the library -- and only one vegetarian pizza place! Scandalous!

There are, however, two more latte shops right outside the library....

Oh yes, and you'll have to face a winter without snow.

All in all, very unattractive.

Established Canadian small press site (hailed by many as the best web journal in Canada) The Danforth Review is up for grabs. Founder and editor Michael Bryson is moving on and he's reading proposals from parties interested in taking it over. My plea to you, if you do get it: don't screw it up.

The Department of Theatre, Film and Creative Writing at the University of British Columbia invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the writing of poetry. An MFA or related graduate degree, or an MA or PhD with a major component in Creative Writing, is essential. The candidate should have a record of excellence in teaching in Creative Writing, a significant publication record which should include no less than three books of poetry, and an impressive history of public readings.

The candidate should have a genuine interest in a wide variety of poetic styles and techniques in order to deal with the diversity of work from students at the graduate and undergraduate levels in the Creative Writing Program at UBC. A demonstrated capacity to translate work from other literary traditions and an ability to use translation as a tool for the development of writing techniques would be useful: previously this position has involved teaching literary translation. A further interest or experience in editing and managing a literary magazine would be an asset because the successful candidate might eventually be expected to contribute as Advisory Editor to our literary magazine, PRISM international.

We offer workshops in the writing of poetry, fiction, non-fiction, children’s literature, literary translation, screen & TV, stageplay, lyric and libretto, and radio play and features. Please consult the Program website www.creativewriting.ubc.ca for details.

This position is subject to funding, and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Applicants should send a letter of application along with their curriculum vitae (including e-mail address and telephone numbers), list of publications, teaching experience, readings and all related experience, and should forward three reference letters from national, and, ideally, international, sources (including at least one from a senior academic) to Chair, Search Committee for Poetry, Creative Writing Program, The University of British Columbia, Buchanan E-462 –1866 Main Mall, Vancouver, BC, Canada, V6T 1Z1. If sending by courier the address is Buchanan E-462 – 1866 East Mall, Vancouver, BC, Canada V6T 1Z2. Complete applications and letters must be received by 28th January, 2004. The position start date is January 1st, 2005.

The University of British Columbia hires on the basis of merit and is committed to employment equity. We encourage all qualified persons to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents of Canada will be given priority. Applications should identify citizenship and immigration status.
