linda, since the youngest k&k will fix a cat is 12 weeks old your mama cat should be dry of milk by then. the kittens can stop nursing anytime between 6-8 weeks old. once you see the kittens eating on their own the kittens don't need to nurse anymore. but they will if mama cat lets them, which mama probably will. you might have to seperte the kittens from mom for mama cat to dry her milk. it is best for mom to dry up her milk for two weeks before she gets fixed after nursing. she can still get fixed if she has milk, but it is better if she is dry. looks like the october clinic will work for you.

Thanks for your reply. Just wondering though, since she will still be nursing her kittens some, if that will matter? Hopefully by that time, they will be eating somewhat on their own. Should I keep her seperated from them for a couple of days after the surgery?

Thank you so much Kitz& Katz for spaying our kitten this past weekend. This was the first time we used your service and everything and everyone was wonderful! The kitten did super after the operation and we would recommend this foundation to anyone. Please know how important your service is to our community here in Hanover. Kitz&Katz allowed us to give yet another stray cat a good home. Thanks again!

Thank you for allowing me to share my story. In 2000 for my birthday I wanted a calico kitten. We searched everywhere and couldn't find one. Someone suggested we try Kitz & Katz that at that time had a shelter in the strip mall in Hanover near where Family First Health is. So we went there and checked the kitten room. No calico. The lady there suggested we look in the "adult cat" room that perhaps I would find a cat to my liking. I saw several cute cats, a female tortie who had given birth to kittens 2 weeks earlier she really wasn't interested in being observed. I saw a cute black and white cat they called Oreo, well while they were trying to catch "Oreo" I sat down on a carpeted benched they had built in. The next thing I knew a small brown tabby cat had jumped into my lap and settled herself down. She had been laying in the front window trying to be oblivious to all the commotion that was going on. I held her up and she hugged me, she loved to be held and would cling to your right shoulder. The lady there told me they called her "lovebug" because she hugged everyone. How could I resist this small brown thing looking up at me? I picked her, and actually picked her up after the 48 hour waiting period. When she saw me come in she came right up to me and jumped up to be held. We named her Bailey. Bailey's been with us since that time, she'd been a true blessing to me. She sticks by my side when I'm sick, she always gives me hugs and comes whenever she's called. She encouraged me to adopt 3 more strays, so our happy home includes four beautiful cats all who are fixed and front declawed. Bailey is the oldest and queen, she has 2 sisters and a brother now. I want to thank Kitz & Katz for giving me the opportunity to adopt this precious bundle of fur. Keep doing what you are doing it's a true blessing to the community.

If you click go on the Kitz and Katz website there are links to SNAP and PAWS website. They have spay neuter clinics every month. K&K is only able to do around 6 a year because they are such a small group of volunteers. I heard Sunday's clinic went well fixing over 100 cats. WOW! What a great thing they do.

Amy,
You were not rash at all. I am so glad you and hubby are keeping your two kittens. Some people take their pets to the SPCA when monies become tight. I do hope you find reasonable spay/neuter very soon. I had two tame males fixed at the Kitz & Katz clinic on Sunday. They were busy, busy. Wow, those volunteers are so friendly and efficient. And PAWS fixed two of my ferals last Friday. Paws is such a lifesaver for ferals, since most ferals are of mystery sex, especially medium long hair ones. Cannot tell if male of female. Looking at the papers on all four , all done by Dr. Matthew Murphy. Bless you Dr. Murphy I also hope our local vets are not heading towards hard times.

Thanks for the info. Sorry to be so rash. My husband and I both lost jobs(thanks to the economy) right before out kittens turned 6 months old. So we have been trying to play catch up and the $192 my vet charges me is out of the question. I have a male and a female(more concerned about the female considering I have two new visitors to my home lately), so I need to get her done as soon as possible. I will check out the programs. Thanks again.

Pam The dates are usually not announced until the end of the year or the beginning of next year. As soon as they find out it will be posted on the Kitz and Katz website. K&K is a very popular program. I'm sure they appreciate your compliment! I know they are only a handful of all volunteers that organize this service for the public. People get frustrated that they can't get in the clinics. If more people could volunteer they could possibly hold more clinics through out the year. With the 6 or so clinics that are held each year the appointments literally are booked in just hours. The key is to get on their website as early as possible the first day they begin taking appointments and grab a spot, which could mean booking it at 1 in the morning. I have gotten in at the last minute by repeatedly checking their website to see if anyone canceled. I have noticed the last couple of days before the clinic is to be held people will cancel. Good luck!

Amy Are there any other programs in the Hanover area? No, not that I aware of. If you live in Adam's County PAWS will give you a discount certificate towards a participating vet. The York SPCA has a low cost program I think. SNAP might be worth the trip. I understand you have a busy schedule and don't want to drive to another town. But if you are looking for a low cost fix that might be your only option. Good luck!

Amy, You can contact acpals http://acpals.com/You can get a certificate that your local vet. will honor. A $40.00 discount for female cat. I have used it already at Clearview for ferals. Dropped cat off in morning and picked cat up later in day. Total cost was around $50.00 I believe with discount. Was a while ago though. Just call ACPALS. Also when trapping a feral, you can start a week before appointment. Feral will be ok for a week intrap. I sometimes even start earlier upto two weeks and then wire two traps together lengthwise. Enough room for a small litterbox at one end plus food/water on the other and sleeping blanket in center plus cover over top. Hope this helps..

I tried Snap but I can not drive to Harrisburg or Mechanicsburg. I can't schedule it with the SPCA because not knowing what my schedule will be and not having the ability to schedule your own appointment. I have a female thats needs done before she goes into heat.

Kitz and Katz does not offer pre-operative blood work. This means we cannot detect any underlying health conditions that may complicate your cat's surgery.
If, for any reason, you feel your cat is not healthy enough to undergo surgery, Please TAKE THEM TO YOUR NORMAL VET.

We just got a new kitten yesterday he is 6 weeks 4 days old, the pet shop gave me this address for spaying and Neutering, I'm surprised we can get it done so young, my question is how early do males start spraying...I don't want this to happen for he is an inside cat.

I need everyone in the Littlestown area to keep their eyes open for my bird! I live on South Columbus Ave, near South Queen Street. He is a cockatiel, gray with orange circles on his cheeks and a yellow mohawk. His name is Tweet. If you happen to hear a bird whistling the "Andy Griffin" tune, that is him!!! he has only been gone for a couple hours,so hopefully he hasn't had time to hook up with the bad birds! He is my baby!!! He follows me through the house all the time!!! Please help!!!! If you see or hear him, please call me, I don't carewhat time of night it is!!!!

I was fortunate enough to get my young female cats in for the next clinic on Feb 24. But the older of the two ( she is about 10 months old) is now in heat. She has been walking around the house yelling about it day and night..anyway, does her cycle make a spay procedure any more risky. I have heard with dogs in can cause excessive bleeding. I would hate to pass up this chance to get her spayed- not to mention risk her getting out and getting pregnant. Can anyone tell me how long a heat cycle usually lasts and if it could effect her surgery in 6 days?? thanks!

Here is a picture of timmy, please keep an eye out for him.We have reason to believe that he may have been trapped and relocated outside of town.He will try and find shelter in a barn or shed with the upcoming frigid cold weather. He may still have colored Christmas bells on his neck and he does come to the name Timmy. We are heartbroken and just want him back.

Hello, Let her have the babies,(hope not to many)and let her feed then until they are at least six to eight weeks old.She should dry out so to say for at least ten days-two weeks before her spaying. The kittens only need to be 3-4 months for their spay/neuter.I don't recommend ads for free kittens or small animals unless you can check up on them.Friends and relatives, coworkers that you know is the way to go.K&K has 4 clinics coming up that the mom and kittens can be done at so don't wait until itsto late please.

I was looking for information on spaying. My rescued female was reportedly already spayed and declawed, so said the vet. Well she went into heat and got outside and came back two days later. You guessed it, she is now very pregnant! How long do I have to wait after kittens are born to get her spayed and where can I safely find homes for these kittens? I don't have the resources to keep them. How early can I take them away from their mom? I was hoping to come to one of the spay clinics.

I have let this go on long enough. This board is currently temporarily closed until further notice. All post are removed back to a reset point. It will be reopened at a future date.
This board was indented for Kitz and Katz help related discussions. Not past issues and quibbling between new and old spca board members and workers.
One more post on the subject will close this board down permanently. Which would be a shame for the people and cats for which this board was Intended.
I am asking nicely please do not ruin it for the rest of us.

I need to find homes for two, 4 month old female kittens ASAP. They were vet checked and are current on vaccinations and I will pay for the cost of spaying. One is gray/white and the other is a tortie (gray/tan). Both are very sweet and friendly and get along well with other cats. They are really attached to each other and it would be nice to see them get a home together if possible. These kittens were born to a stray mother that was finally spayed and we are keeping her but I really need to find homes for the kittens before they get much older. I will only give to someone that will provide a full-time indoor home for them. Please email me at skcsac@adelphia.net if you would like more information or photos.

Julie: The shelters and rescues are full and please don't give the cat to someone you don't no.Get a dog house and keep it as an outside cat.It sounds like it will try and find its way back so if you give it away again it may try and find its way back to its home and get hit on the road or shot at.It is hunting season and it happens. We have outside cats and they prefer it that way.We give them plenty of food, warm water and a nice house with carpet or straw if you like.It beats them getting lost or hit.And don't be surprized if you still have allergies after all this,We see it over and over again.

I've got a big problem and I need help. I recently found out that I have a severe allergy towards my cats, which explains my servere astmas for the past 5 years. I had 3 cats, 2 of which I found an excellent home for and the 1 I though had a home right down the road from us. Heidi is very scared of people, but she does show her face from time to time and will let my husband pet her occassionally. Last night I awoke at 1am to sounds of a cat in our home. Heidi, my cat, decided to run away from home down the road and since it was windy the basement door blew open and in she came. We have her in our basement with litter pan, food and water for the time being, but she needs to be out ASAP, as I feel bad for keeping her in the basement since I cannot let her up in the house since we are still trying to clean it. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm leary about shelters because I need to know she will be in a home, but I'm running out of options. She's fixed of course and has all her shots up to date and declawed. It's hard to catch her though.

I'm trying to find homes for 3 kittens born to a stray mother. They are sweet, friendly and healthy 10 week old (1 male black&white, 2 females grey/white & tortie). They have had their first distemper vaccine, tested negative for Fel. Leuk/Hiv, dewormed, flea treatment and using litter box very well. I need to find homes ASAP and hoping to keep them from going to the shelter. I'm keeping the mother and cannot keep babies. If interested please email skcsac@adelphia.net

I need help finding homes for 2 adult cats. I am moving to Southern Virginia and cannot take my cats with me. This is not a choice I make easily but find it very difficult. I have Nikki and Lucky. Nikki was given to me by choice and I rescued Lucky after he was hit by a vehicle in McSherrystown. They are both wonderful cats but not attached to one another so they can go to separate homes. Both are declawed and Spayed & Neutered. Both are very lovable and love to sleep in bed with you. They are both also used to being around large dogs. I am leaving the end of September and need to find homes soon. If anyone knows anyone who would want either one or would be willing to take care of them until homes are found I would be more than happy to help with food, vet bills ect.

I am sure that they are males. They actually interacted well together today though. Like you said they are probably about 5-6 weeks, so it would be rare that they would kill them? I probably don't need to cage to catch them. And the one my neighbor said that he had gotten neutered already. My daughters have been interacting with them for some time. So basically they were smelling and licking there behind to identify there sex? Do you think that since the cats have been coming in the garage that they will "learn" to accept them? The male cats have been coming in and out of the garage where they are since I have had them with no "problem".

Kitty, You are right about an unneutered male killing a small male kitten if they are not the father.Rare, but it does happen but only with real wee ones.Did not want to scare Vickie, but I have seen the evidence with a male kitten that was about one week old.Male lions do the same.. Vickie, are you sure those cats are males. Cats are a little bit like dogs, they always smell the behind to identify another cat. Males with not take a kitten under wings though IMO. ALso if one is not neutered, PAWS are super for feral/semi feral cats. Kitz & Katz directed me to them on my feral outside population and most got caught. They (Paws) supplied the traps. Difficult to make appointments for a Kitz & Katz clinic on ferals since you donot know if,when or how many you will catch.

I don't have the cats outside in the barn as of yet they are inside. Like I said before that I do have two males that are around and that I have left the gargage door open and physcially watched them around the kittens. They seem to be ok I guess. My daughter actually left them out with them down there today and they "the male cats" started to lick the kittens eyes and there "behinds?" . I did not see any of signs of "fighting". I guess that is good. I know the neighbor said that he did catch it and that he is spayed, but the other one I don't think is.The two male cats seem to be friendly and gentle. So maybe???? they will take the kittens under there wing??? So actually I can get the kittens spayed with kitz katz in September or October.

Vickie, The food you put out could also be eaten by an opossum or even an raccoon. Not necessarily cats.THey are way too young for spaying. Most vets will not spay at that early an age. It is the anesthesia that worries them on small animals, not the operation. They like to see some weight on them. I assume you are already have a vet since you have a dog. Questions on spaying age , should be directed to your vet. Do you have the cage outside already?

Serijna, I don't believe that I have any leaving in the barn right now. I go out every day and look and nothing except the food is GONE! I know of two male that come around that are actually friendly with me but a little timid. If you think they are about 5/6 weeks old do you think another 2 weeks is to soonm since they are so little and if the other two males that do come around you think. Do you think if I put the cage that I have them in now in the barn would be a good idea so they get used to there new enviornment? (Don't worry, the cage I have them in is an extra large dog cage fully opened)And maybe the cats would get used to them slowlybefore "letting them go"? Do you think I should get them spayed first? Sorry for all the questions but I really just want to do the right thing!

Vickie, I just measured the kittens I have and they are 11 to 12 inches long and 9 weeks old. So I suspect yours are around 5/6 weeks and should weight at least 1 lb. You gave them all the right stuff, pedialyte is especially a lifesaver for sickly kittens.Just plain milk would have given them deadly diarrhea. The internet is so super with all that info at your fingertips. If you are planning to keep them, I would take them to a vet for a check up. So many kittens have round worms and vet has safe worming medecin( Nemex). Are you sure you donot have cats living in your barn already since you put food out? Can you introduce them to the other cats outside and stay around/watch for a while? Wait at least another 2 weeks though. Except for two unneutered males, cats rarely hurts each other. "Fights" I have observed mainly consisted of staring down and growling plus an occasionally whack of a paw. Or chasing/escorting an unwelcome strange adult out of their territory.

Sorry, I meant the size of the inside of my hand. I have a digital scale and when I put them on it doesn't register. I did measure them, they are about 81/2 to 9 inches long standing up from the top of there head where there ears are to the end of there behind where the tail begins. There ears and eyes were open when I did find them and I did feed them through a syringe only because they were so hungry, I made the cat milk recipe that you find on the internet with pedialite, baby food, evaporateed milk, etc because they looked so terrible. However I put a little bit of warm water on the kitten chow and they ate that right away also "like that was there first meal" it was sad. They are very playful now and go in the litter pan to the bathroom. ( Actually they went in the litter pan the second day I had them). I just want to get them spayed as soon as I can because it looks like I am going to be keeping them. Did you have any advise about the other cats in the area? (barn cats) Do you think they will learn to "defend themselves"? I am just worried that once I do put them in the barn that some of the other cats that come down or over for food may not like them they may not like them. The last thing I want is for them to get into fights and one get hurt.......

Oh, gosh Vickie. So hard to tell without seeing them. Where their eyes fully open and ears erect when you found them. Did they start eating solid food (kitten chow) right away. A little bit bigger than your palm sounds awfully small. Did you have to bottle fed them first? I am guessing around 3/4 weeks based on the size you described. Can you weight them and let us know?

Kitty,
What a super idea to call people with ads for free pets. I simply never thought about it. I will certainly get on the phone. BTW, what is the reason for these ads anyway. It is cheaper than taking an animal to the SPCA where they require a (oxymoron)mandatory donation or maybe homebound people.? Furthermore, are those kind of ads not kind of dangerous anyway. You never know, who you are inviting into your house. We live in a dangerous society IMO. Sorry, if I sound paranoid. .

Vickie, Did not know you had a dog. I used to have dogs when I could get around more easily. Many years ago I took another stray dog in and when it got into the house, it went straight after a kitten. A firm "no" stopped her right away. And after supervised behavior she never bothered a kitten/cat anymore. Dogs are so eager to please their master. Your mixed breed has very strong inbred hunting insticts though but basically a very gentle dog. Not sure if you could bring the kittens into the house and train your dog that it displeases you to hurt/harass kittens. Always supervised ofcourse.Am not an expert but dogs are so smart and willing to please. Young kittens get a lot of acquired knowledge from their moms as I have observed as to how to avoid certain animals, including dogs. Your kittens , sans mom's training, will probably just walk upto a dog in good faith. Am so sorry, I cannot be more of help. Adult females quite often do adopt kittens other than their own, even if spayed adults. If you cannot find a good home for them, taking them to your neighbor's cats might work. But the most important thing is getting them spayed ofcourse if you decide to keep them..In my household of many cats, I have noticed that adult females get friendly with kittens that are similar in color to them . Made my 16 year old son say that cats are racists.

vickie:We try and get them spayed before they go into heat which means don't wait until they are 6 months or it may be to late.K&K clinics are Sept. Oct.Nov. as you can see on the web site. But if it means saving the lives of kittens and cats call PAWS @ 957-8122 box #3 or 732-5377 Box#5.These two have clinics over the months K&K does not. Each one you do will save countless lives.I feel as though we should call some of these people that run the ads for free kittens, bunnies, puppies and so on and tell them to be very careful who they give the animals to.Well,I did call one guy once that was giving away an dog he had for years.he thought the dog would be happier with more room to run and I told him I'd bet the dog would be happier to stay with him after all these years.I think he kept it.

Serijna. Thanks for the advise, the only worry is that I do have a bassett-beagle which is 7 years old and he has killed a kitten before.Do you have any advise that you could give me in to when and how to introduce the kitten or older kitten(?) to the barn? Will they learn for example not to go in my yard because the dog is in there (probably barking at them)? How about other cats in the area? (I know my neighbor behind me has plenty of barn cats that do come down to get food because I always put food out for them. I even put a "doggy door" on my shed so they could go in and out as they please. Any advise will be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks for all of your help!!!

Vickie, Barn cats earn their keep. If you store any items in your outbuildings that can be chewed on, barn cats effectively keep rodents under control. Ditto if you have a small garden. I feed a small feral population. Hubby was against it first but now welcomes it. No more damage to items stored in the barn, his small vineyard does not have young plants killed anymore and no more netting required. Only plusses, no negatives. Kitty, most of my cats are spayed ,neutered. I have a trap set permanently but only the ones that are already fixed go in it. Three semi ferals( they come real close to me but no touching allowed) elusive females go nowhere near it. I have been looking at a Tomahawk Duraflex net and wonder if that would help to catch the "hard to catch" cats. Have no experience with it though. Plus they are expensive but then taking kittens to the SPCA, occasional a vet visit, KMR , terramycin etc is more expensive.

Oh Kitty! I did not realize that people would feed them to snakes and the thought of a pit bull even makes me MORE sick to my stomach!! Are the places that you had listed do they put the kittens down if they can't find a home (since if may be so many?) I just can't come to terms at this point giving them to anyone!I just can't imagine people being so sick to do this but you are right they are many of them out there! I never would have thought of that because I TRY to think that people looking f or an animal would have a good heart. It may just come to it that I will half to keep the cats myself maybe as barn cats since I do have 3 1/2 acres and shelter buildings for them. But I will have to come and get them spayed. THAT IS A MUST! I really agree with you it is all of our responsibilty to do this. That is why we have so so so many kittens! I really can't tell how old they are at this point...they are bigger than my palm now, they are eating kitten chow, eyes open, playing...etc. I know they are both females so I don't want to take the chance in one getting pregnant. Your next spayed will be in September 2006? If I do indeed keep them I do not eant them to get pregnant!

Oh,Kitty. You are so right. You have to be so careful to whom you give a free animal. Cat, kitty, puppy, pet rabbit, pet rat, pet ferret, hamster etc. I made the same error years ago. I know for a fact a person that has a Komodo dragon who hunts around for free pet animals. Ditto for snakes.Plus the sadistic type of people.Anyway, could you post the places that are safe to surrender an animal to. I currently have nine kittens between 8 and 10 weeks old and will start taking them gradually to the Adams county SPCA. True, they want $35.00 for each one I take over(plus I always call ahead to ensure they have room), but it is worth my peace of mind. Five of the kittens are very special, since the semi feral mother deposited them(at about 3 weeks old over a 6 day period) on my second floor back porch and proceeded to come in the house to take care of them. But that is an other long amazing story.

Hello, I am in need of finding homes for two Beautiful, adorable kittens. We actually found them living in a truck cap when our family "rescued" them and brought them home and nursed them back to life. They look to be very healthy at this point and loves to play!! They are 2 little girls with gray and some tan markings. It is very hard to describe. They I must say have the most beautiful markings color on a cat that I every have seen. If anyone could PLEASE help me or know of anyone that is looking for kittens and that will give them a good home please email me live4hmc@yahoo.com or give me a call 443-522-9607.

katy ~ Yes, we were able to find a baby that fit perfect for my Princess. We love her more than words can express. Why do you ask, do you have a kitten that you need to find a home for? You can email me at bestbougie@yahoo.com if you would like. The kitten that was given to us was a poor very sad small young gal that just needed some TLC and food and now she is such a large part of our family. Take care and let me know if you need to find a home or what is going on.

I lost a long grey haired kitten last week and I saw her and went running down the street to get her and someone drove off with her. Might this be my baby? I was coming in the door with both of my nieces (both under 2) and she darted out the door. you can email me at princess_of_the_lost@yahoo.com

I want to add that I found this kitten in Littlestown in case anyone knows of someone who may have lost her. I always watch the Evening Sun for lost and found pets and have not seen any describing her. I will call the SPCA's tomorrow with her description. Any advice would be appreciated if I can not find the owner or anyone who is interested in giving her a good home.

Hi
I just found a kitten. She looks like an angora and is very friendly. Her ribs were showing and she was so hungry. I have her in my basement but can't keep her because I have a cat who doesn't get along with other cats. I don't want to take her to the SPCA and would like to get her a good home. I haven't seen any ads for a lost kitten and am afraid she was dumped. I can be contacted at npoist@adelphia.net.

Thank you Kitty for your suggestions. I am still checking around for a brother or sister for my Princess and am still very unfamiliar with the different organizations that rescue animals. I check the merchandiser everytime it comes out but have had no luck with finding a sibbling for her. I will contact Paws to see if they might have a kitten in need of a loving home also. I also have Appalacian keeping a eye out for a brother or a sister for my baby girl. My Princess is just as much a part of my family as my husband and my children but we feel that she is in need of a brother or a sister to keep her company when we go out.

Thank you for your suggestion. Just so you know, I did adopt my Princess from Appalacian and did as you say "lay out money for her" also, there is not any amount of money that I can put on her since she has bought such joy to my home. I do not recall even using the word "free' but it certainly does not in anyway suggest that we are in anyway a inadequate home for any animal. For me its not what you pay for the animal but its the love that you give it in which, we give plenty. Also, I would not suggest you just giving your animals to just anyone due to the fact that you should do a background investigation or at least check them somehow (as the rescue center did with me and everyone that adopts)to see if they are a suitable fit for your kitten. By the way, I Have checked back with the same RESCUE center where we got our baby from and no place has kittens which is why i placed my request. Also, there are many people that let the cats run around outside and do not spade them and they get "unwanted" pregnancies that they were not prepared for and try to get them to loving and caring homes.

Why donot you go to the Adams County SPCA. They have some wonderful cats up for adoption. I have some kittens up for adoption but I will not give a free kitten to a person that I donot know or just slightly know. I take my adoptable kittens to the Adams county SPCA. In my warped mind, I think that a kitten will get a better home if the new owner has to lay some money out for it. Besides at the SPCA they have been checked for any health problems. Getting a free kitten that could carry some infectious disease, could make your current cat sick.

Neutering a cat extends its life span by two or three years.
Cats respond most readily to names that end in an "ee" sound.
Don't give kitty raw egg white. Raw egg whites contain an enzyme that breaks down the vitamin biotin, which is essential to cat health.
Folklore has it that the tabby cat got the M on the forehead as a gesture of thanks from Mary, the mother of Jesus. She gave this to the kitties to show her appreciation for the kitties purring the baby to sleep.
Cats can successfully navigate through mazes in complete darkness, but lose that ability if their whiskers are cut off (they wander aimlessly).
After being petted, sometimes you will see a cat cleaning himself. He is trying to get the "person" smell off.
Non-pedigree cats have an higher incidence of tabby markings than pedigree cats. Non-pedigree cats are also more often more robust than highly bred cats.
A cat's brain is more similar to a human's brain than that of a dog.
Black cat superstitions originated in America. In Asia and England, a black cat is considered lucky.

I must join in the Paws praise and two of the Paws "angels" Mauri and Carol whom I met. But also high praise for this board that directed me to them. Most of my outside ferals got fixed in January thru them. There must be hundreds of kittens that will not be born this spring(and into a harsh short life) because of them. We are truly lucky to live in this area with such dedicated animal groups for ferals.

Just an update. Thanks for the PAWS/Mauri number for the injured stray cat. I was able to pen him up on my porch and Mauri picked him up yesterday and took him for treatment. His leg wasn't broken after all, it was badly infected from a bite. They also neutered him, give him all his shots, etc. PAWS is fantastic! My first experience with them. Mauri brought him back here to my pen. I think the little guy's tame-able and I hope to find him an indoor home soon. After all he's been through, he deserves that. Would keep him myself but I've already got 5 housecats, plus my outside (neutered)ferals.

Paws I believe started Cpaa,Should all be the same.CPAA is what it says,an alliance of groups together for the animals ie,cats&dogs.Don't give up on that mom,you can get her.The spca has over 100 cats and kittens at this point so thats why it is so important to spay and neuter each and everyone we can get.

Have a question on donations. Recently made a donation on line via paypal.( had a good Ebay auction). Thought I was donating to PAWS mobile spay/neutering van. However, when I checked my account it said Central Pennsylvania Animal Alliance. Did I goof or it that a kind of a umbrella group for all the the great animal groups in this area. Bummer, one of my outside cats is pregnant but still so much better than last year at this time with many pregnant cats. Think the best approach is trying to catch them at about 4 weeks. Keep them inside for two months and then off to the Adams county SPCA with a $35.00 donation for each. And keep trying to catch the mom.

I would say call Mauri @957-8122,Box#3 or 308-0279.They may be able to help trap it and help it.It would be nice if you would take it back as an outside cat. They would have it neutered and shots when it came back.Give them a call and help this poor animal ASAP.

Need advice. There's stray cat around. (No, not for that long. All the strays that come here get neutered ASAP.) A week ago, he was on my porch, obviously injured. I can't get close enough to pet him. Possibly a broken leg. I fed him that day and tried to catch him, almost had him (to try and get help) but he got away. Even cats with broken legs go fast if they're frightened! Did not see him for a week. My heart was breaking because I just knew he was somewhere dying. Well, he came up on my porch again today. Still limping, leg draining pus. I gave him some food with a penicillin pill from one of my housecats in. Now he's gone again. I doubt I'll ever be able to catch him after last week. If I could get him in a pen, is there a vet or anyone I can call who'd come and get him and get him help or put humanely to sleep? Any advice is appreciated.

I am in the process of getting numerous feral cats spayed/neutered at the York County SPCA. I have been doing them 3 to 5 at a time since December. 3 of the earlier ones that I had done are losing a lot of hair. The SPCA requires a rabies shot for their SOS (Spay Our Strays) program. I've read that a possible cause for hair loss can be a rabies shot. This has been a very expensive undertaking for me, but I've inherited a farm where they come to the barn to be fed and I want them taken care of. I DON'T want them to lose all their hair! Any economical advice that might help? I've read that the homeopathic Thuja can be used, but being they are pretty wild, it's hard to get the required 3 doses each 12 hours apart. It can't be given with food.

Got all my ferals done except for some smarty pants ,about 5 or 6 ones. Still have traps set but am catching only the ones that were done already. Still working on getting them tamer. Although, I beleive they will never be adoptable cats. Funny thing, I noticed, if you tame feral kittens, they will generally be nice to everybody. If you have luck with taming adult ferals they are still be spooked by everybody else. Frustrating since some of them I can even pet, but no picking up please or coming at them with two hands. Sooner or later I will catch them though. Hard to make appointments if you are not sure if you have a cat ready.Pawsofpa did most of them, they are great for feral cats(cats you have to trap). My house cats have all been fixed a while ago.

Hi Jessica,
Having your cat neutered is commendable and show you care for your cat. As to declawing, are you sure you want to do that. Do you know what is involved. It is expensive plus there are much more humane less expensive alternatives. It is ofcourse your choice. Personally , I would never have a cat declawed. I consider it barbaric and a mutilation. It is illegal in most of Western Europe, where I hail from. It is however a very profitable business for some vet clinics in the USA and brings in plenty of bucks. Most honourable vets will try to discourage it however, unless you a hemophiliac.

I have a orange tabby female ( named snowball) that is a very loving cat we have to move and can not take her with us. It is killing me to let her go she is my best friend. She is 7 years old she has been spaided and declawed. She don't like kids won't hurt them just goes and hides while they are there. She prefers women. She sleeps on top of the covers with me every night and sits in my lap every chance she gets She doesn't go out side she was found in a snow storm 7 yrs ago and I really think she remembers and is afraid if she goes out the door it will happen again. I really would love to find her a good home before feb 14 or 15th. Call me at 630 1846 Thanks so much I will cry when she leaves but I will feel better knowing she will have a good home. I truely love her and there is no way the landlord will let us have her. She is clean and uses her box. She like wet and dry food and loves to lick ice cream bowls only if it is vanilla never chocolate. Please some one come and give her a good home.

Update. One feral spayed last week by Clearview animal Hospital. Eight cats trapped in cages that I have downstairs right now. Pawsof PA will pick them up later today for their feral/stray clinic tomorrow. Probably have about 20 more to go. Gosh, I feel so good. Finally can look forward towards spring again and a lot less little ones to catch.Anybody feeding a feral colony , pls pls do the same thing.

I would like to thank Kitz and Katz for that valuable phone number(957-8122) as it applies to feral/stray cats.Such wonderful people there. I have done many things so wrong in the past due to ignorance since I started feeding the feral cat population. About three years ago I got a complaint filed against me as a neighborhood nuisance because of the outside cat population. The animal control officer that came over simply stated that I had to get rid of some cats or start getting heavy fines. Never said a word about organizations that will help with spaying/neutering. Basically said, if you feed them you own them. My husband did catch some ferals in a homemade trap and took them over to the Adams county SPCA.I cried my heart out since I was sending them to a certain death. They were not adoptable. After a few deliveries to the SPCA, I told them no more or I would kill myself(yes, animal people are nuts) He then trapped a couple (mostly males) and dropped them off at farms(also very WRONG). I still went thru horrible crying spells. For the past years, I have been trying to catch all the small kittens before they became feral and kept them in my house for fully taming.Generally lost one in five due to disease(another heartbreak), even after taking the sick ones to vet(expensive). Still went thru crying spells after I finally took them to the SPCA, although they now were fully adoptable. Hard to give them up after bottle feeding and getting to know them. No two are alike in character.Everytime when I saw a feral pregnant outside, my heart sank again, just hated to see them pregnant. Go thru the catching them again, have some die and have to give them up again. Was sure that any trapped feral would be killed if contacting any animal group( I really thought , I was the only animal nut in the world). So my answer was to grab as many kittens to keep the cat population down. Did not think that any vet would even touch a feral. Yes, I was really stupid.Gosh, how much have I learned since that time. Still wonder(actually hopping mad) why the animal control officer did not give me more info about controlling the feral cat population. Or even Adams County SPCA. All they had was a "prevent a litter assistance program" with a max of two cats a year for neutering/spaying. Thank heavens for my computer to get this dummy with the program. Still wonder why the animal control officer and the SPCA did not inform me of all those wonderful programs in existence for nuts like me. Was that by design or ignorance.

Americadeaf,
I will be happy to keep your cat for a while till you find another apartment. IMO, you really donot have any other option than to find another apartment. Afterall if the lease has "no pets", you should have considered that before moving in. My hubby has a few apartments in York, but according to him, small children do more damage than pets.

GORRELL MAY BE EVICTED.
Today I received an email from the manager of The Residence at Hanover Shoe of Hanover PA. It reads, "I've just been informed by my maintenance staff that they found a cat again in your apartment. I am going to seek eviction since this is a reoccuring lease violation from you and you seem to think that you can continuously bring the cat(s) back into the apartment. NO PETS ARE ALLOWED!"
Do you have any idea to prevent this eviction?
Thank you in advance for your support.
Howard Gorrell
PS: My cat, Lucky, is very aging at 15 years old and is the last one of the Gorrell's 10-cat members over 20 years.

I just talked to a wonderful person from Kitz & Katz that replied to my phone msg in box 1. All I have to do is call when I set up an appointment at Clearview Animal Hospital.Am covered for the first two appointments by ACPALS.Since it is wintertime, want to try one at a time(a week) first because of post surgery care. Although Clearview will take a stray/feral anytime and do the operation when they get to it, I want to minimize waiting time by making an appointment. Keeping a stray/feral in a cage must be very traumatic. The shorter the time, the better.Clearview(a great animal hospital, all the vets are super) is always very busy when I take one of my house cats in.Besides they will keep the cat for a bit after the surgery for observation. I called the other number but my phone does not have long distance(have a teenage son)and my husband had the cell phone with him so I forgot.Do you think I still should call. Seems Kitz & Katz has it very well covered. Should I have a rabies shot done too for the ferals. Looking at my print out for next apptms of my house cats, rabies shots are now good for three years. For Xmas, I got a wall plaque from my daughter that says " Cats are like potato chips, you can't have just one". probably applies to a lot of folks reading this msg board.

Gosh, some great sites that were posted.Read most of the night some articles by a Dr.Obenski, hilarious but true(an American James Herriot but with much more humor).Gosh, why do people think that Vets should be practically free of charge. They have to run a profitable business. Have a family to support, etc, etc. They invested mucho monies in their education. Compare their services with the price of a plumber, car mechanic etc. Not even mentioning an MD, you can add two zero's to a similar procedure for a human. Ofcourse, they donot have the high malpractice insurance premium. Anyway, made an appointment for my first female feral with Clearview Animal Hospital for Jan 13 Friday. Little bit confused first when they said I first have to take in the cat for shots and check up. Giggled, because you never know when you catch a feral again. When I mentioned ACPALS(have two certificates, you only get two a year), they changed their tune and said I can bring in a cat whenever I can catch it. Got no answer on ear clipping though. I hope they do that. Anyway , hope to do one a week and try to get females first. Have a couple of females that are not too feral. They all had kittens on my back porch at different times and I took the kittens in the house at about four weeks and managed to get the female in the house for feeding kittens by letting the kittens get a little bit hungry and make noise.Mother cats will go thru hell I believe, to get to their hungry kittens. I want to catch each feral though one day before the spaying appointment, so I can keep them off food and just water. Have a large cat domain cage that I have used for semi feral kittens. So much better prior to the operation if they have an empty stomach.. Have about 25 to 30 ferals to go. The mobile clinic is really not much of an option. Too many cats to do. Besides at $84.00 for spaying minus $30.00 from ACPALS, it is not that bad on the pocket book. Besides , I find it very hard to give up a purrball after having it for 8 weeks or so. Not mentioning the few that die and leave me a basket case for a few days.Plus cost of KMR powder, pedialyte each hour when upset tummy or runs etc. Also beating out another cat of adoption when taking kitty over to the Adams county SPCA(at 35.00 a kitten). I refuse to give my kittens away for free. Think they will get a better home thru the SPCA where people have to pay to get a cat/kitten. I left a message, box 1, on Kitz Katz for more neuter/spay help for the ferals that I feed each day in addition to my 12 house cats. I have warming dishes outside for water and once a day canned food. Always have dry food outside, opossums dig into that too. When the canned food is gone, one smart cat is always rolled up into the warming dish. Sorry , this post is so long. Love all animals, but cats are something else. No two alike in character. Have a comment though on low cost neuter/spay. They are really set up for domesticated cats with those limits. Not really for a feral colony. Serijna

You just want to spay and neuter all the cats you can catch.I trapped mine and then released them into a garage for a day or two. They could stay in a small cage or a shed or whatever just as long as they are warm.If they are in a cage cover it.They will be fine.Call the # I gave out before, they do strays and ferels. You need to beat the Spring kitten season.

While a vasectomy renders a male cat sterile, it does not affect testosterone levels as long as the spermatic artery is kept intact. A vasectomized cat, in other words, can mate, but cannot father kittens. This procedure is rarely used for domestic male cats, because a vasectomized male cat would still have territorial issues, still perhaps be prone to fighting other cats to protect that territory, still wander and try to get outside in search of a mate, and still spray urine that has a very strong odor. Vasectomy is still a valid alternative for population control in feral cat colonies, however.

Hi again,
Sorry, did not want to confuse anybody. Thought that a feral vasectomy male cat could keep the kitten population down more effectively than a castrated male.Besides ,still have to see an actual fight between two males. All the ones I have seen are having staring and vocal contests. However, am talking about outside feral cats(that I put food outside for) to get spayed/neutered. My pet house cats are all spayed or neutered. The cages I have seen at the SPCA are not very big to keep a feral cat in for a couple of days after having been spayed/neutered. How do people handle feral cats?

Not sure what you are asking here, but both male and female should be spayed or neutered ASAP.Keeps them from spraying, fighting and most important keeps them from having or fathering kittens. The clinic dates are listed below and hope to see you at at least one of them. The vet recommends they be kept in till the next day.I like to keep them in at least a couple days to heal a little. You may also want to call 957-8122 for some help with the spaying & neutering.

Hi, Have some questions for this board. Am a certified animal/cat nut with 12 cats in the house and feed many strays /ferals outside. Want to embark on getting all the strays /ferals outside neutered/spayed before next spring. Each spring and summer , I try to catch any kitten before they become feral. At about three months old, I take them to the SPCA Adams County shelter and pay $35.00 each kitten for them to take it. That exludes any vet bills for a problem kitty in between. Just took two kittens today to Clearview Animal hospital. One for check up after one eye was removed, one for fat belly problem. Should have asked vet these questions.Anyway, when neutering a male(castrating) you can also select to have a vasectomy. A vasectomy takes the female out of heat.Would that not make more sense than neutering for feral male cat?. Also when having a female feral cat spayed in winter, how long should they be under observation before releasing out again. In my experience , once a cat is used to being outside, they might come in occasionally but prefer to be outside most of the time.

Kristen I would love to take your cat...however I am a teenager with a 13 week old kitten and a 2 year old golden retriever. So, we aren't the quietest household. My suggestion to you is to put an ad in the merchandiser. We had to do the same thing for my mix breed dog once. We got a ton of calls! Just put in free to a good home and then a description. This way you can meet the people she is going home with :)
I also have a question. I have a kitten, and my mom wants me to get her declawed. Now, I have heard mixed opinons about declawing. She is an indoor cat, and has clawed my family before...both on perpose and not. My Dad says I shouldn't, and my Mom is pratically ordering me to!! What should I do?

Hello everyone!
I am a fellow animal lover and have a question for you. My grandmother was just diagnosed with macular degeneration and is losing her eyesight. She has a beautiful long haired black and white cat that is 10 years old. My grandmother is no longer able to take care of her due to the sight loss and all of her immediate family are not able to take the cat in due to other pets in the home. This cat needs a quiet home, preferably with an older person or someone without children. We refuse to take her to the humane society. Can anyone give any suggestions or know of anyone who wants "sadie"? Thank you!! Please e-mail me at kriten80@aol.com

In search of a GOOD HOME! We have 3 wonderful, people friendly, good with kids cats that need a new home. I am allergic and since the birth of my son, my allergies have worsened. We rescued them--female calico 3 years ago, 2 male orange tabby 2 1/2 years ago. We bottle fed the males (only 4 weeks when we found them). They are spayed/neutered, up to date on shots, well cared for and declawed. We love them and want them to be in a good, safe place!

Spay Day USA is 2/22/05,Ten years ago it was estimated 10-12 million cats and dogs were being euthanized each year, now the # is 4 million,so spay & neuter does work if we all do our part. This info.taken from Animal Guardian.

Erin, Also at Petco they host an Animal Shelter almost every weekend. I am in the process of adopting a 4 week old kitten. You will have to go through an aplication process. This is to make sure the kitten is going to a good home. They will ask how many hours the kitten will be home alone, how many other animals you have in the household and vet records for those animals. This is to make sure all animals are up to date on all shots. These kittens you adopt may never be declawed and must be spayed or nuetured. If you decide you do not want the cat at any time throughout his/her life you must return the cat to the organization. This is to prevent from animals being discarded on the side of the road. The cost is $75.00. This money goes for the kittens first year shots, blood work and spay or nueturing. The organization is Animal Rescue, Inc. Their Website is www.animalrescueinc.org. You are able to take a look at picutes of the cats and the description will tell you their name, age and if they are good with children ect. Good luck in your findings.

Erin, You can find cats/kittens in the merchandiser under the Freebies section or Pet/Animals section. You can also check the bulletin boards at local Vets or Pet stores such as Petco, etc. You might want to take into consideration that while the SPCA charges $100 I believe this covers getting the cat fixed and it's initial care. Getting the cat free and then taking it to your vet will cost you that much or more easily. Some other shelters you can look into is the Helen Krouse Foundation in Dillsburg. 697-3377, Animal Rescue in Shrewburry. 993-3232, or Appalachian Cat Rescue in Hanover. (has cats at Pet Valu in Hanover) 476-2094.

I was curious as to if anyone could point me in the right direction for a kitten about 15 weeks or older? I am around Hanover and the SPCA wants $100 for a kitten. I really didnt want to spend that much right off the bat.

Just wanted to say that I thought the story about Pfc. Hammer, the Iraqi cat was really neat. My wife and I are are avid cat lovers. We have a very unique cat that has us trained very well. He's been training us for the past twelve years and we would'nt have it any other way. He's family! Kudos to the organization that helped Hammer to come home with its owner. Nice story.

Tabby Gets Military Rank After Iraq Tour By The Associated Press
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Fort Carson Staff Sgt. Rick Bousfield of the 3rd Brigade Combat Team had a mission: Saving Pvt. Hammer.
Pfc. Hammer is an Iraqi tabby cat the unit adopted after he was born last fall at a base in Balad, 50 miles north of Baghdad.
When Bousfield found out his unit was leaving Iraq (news - web sites) in March, he decided he couldn't leave a member of his team behind.
"He has been through mortar attacks," said Bousfield, a 19-year Army veteran. "He'd jump and get scared liked the rest of us. He is kind of like one of our own."
Pfc. Hammer got his name from the unit that adopted him, Team Hammer. Soldiers would tuck Hammer in their body armor during artillery attacks, and in return, Hammer chased mice in the mess hall.
"He was a stress therapist," Bousfield said. "The guys would come back in tired and stressed. Hammer would come back and bug the heck out of you. He wiped away some worries."
The kitten earned his rank after nabbing five mice. When Bousfield learned his unit was going, he sent an e-mail to Alley Cat Allies, a national clearinghouse of information on stray cats, asking for help bringing Hammer along.
Alley Cat Allies raised $2,500 for Hammer's shots, sterilization, paperwork and a plane ride to the United States.
Hammer left Iraq with his unit in March, then flew from Kuwait to San Francisco in cargo-class. He traveled first class with an Alley Cat Allies volunteer to Denver.
Bousfield met the kitten at the airport.
