Welcome to the Board. This is real simple to use. Problably the easiest when subscribing it to get the email when it's transmitted instead of getting it once a day, for the purposes of JVFD anyway.
Great start to a new era for the dept today.

Hey some good news to share. Yesterday, after alerting Left Hand of Hot spot near Ball Gulch close to Fairview Peak, Chief Niquist of Left Hand came up to the house (twice). We spoke a little about the fire for which he was very thankful of me alerting them to the spot. Anyway, he himself mentioned that we could organize a burn up at my house in the name of training. He gave me his card and asked me to call him whenever to discuss it in more detail. Secondly, I just received info from Fire Chief John Benson of Boulder Mountain Fire District who is also offering us training as well. He will contacting the Commanders with further info.

All the momentum is awesome. Thanks to all. Since I have my wildland Red Card, Now I'd love to get some wildland Sawyer (chainsaw) training. I think it would come in real handy for any significant wildland event. If any of our Chiefs hear about any opportunity for Wildalnd Sawyer training, please know I would definately attend. Thanks, Charles Swarts

Bill, I would say it depends on what you plan on doing with it. I have a Stihl Farm Boss with a 20 inch bar and agressive non safety chain-need to buy Kevlar protection pants with the chain otherwise you can;t get it. This saw handles any trees I have. Bill look into purchasing the Stihl electric chain sharpener-it's worth every penny.

Thanks for the info, Jim. The Farm Boss is Stihl's most popular model. I was wondering if the 20" bar would be big enough, so it's good to hear it is. I did not know that there was a difference in chains. There are 2 types of bars, one has a sprocket at the end of the bar - recommendations? http://www.stihlusa.com/chainsaws/guidebars.html You made the second recommendation I've received about safety pants or chaps; must be a very good idea. What type of saws are used for fire fighting? Should this be a consideration?

You know some of the saws I have seen fire fighters use are no different from mine. Of course some are, again it depends on the territory you're in. For example, the Farm Boss would be useless in California-the pine out there can be massive. Here it is acceptable. The 20 in bar is about as large as you want to go on that saw at this altitude. Some saws will go up to 24 and 26 inches. I have heard about the bar you spoke of but never seriously looked into it. I highly recomment safety pants-they have already kept me out of the hospital.

Oops I don't know if there is a major difference for saws in a fire. Remember you have to hike it around so in some respect don't make it too big. My saw drops small/medium trees and branches virtually on contact, largest of trees will take two minutes with a sharp chain.

Last evening the Jamestown VFD EMS Team met for a 1/2 hour business meeting followed by a 1 1/2 hour training with Pridemark Ambulance on Spinal Injuries and on-scene treatment. During December we will be doing an orientation for any new members. JaVayne Metzger joined our group last night. We will be doing a CPR Recertification in January 2004 on a Tuesday evening from 6-10 pm with Claudia (Lefthand EMS Chief). Any fire dept. member can recertify with this group. Please contact me asap if you are interested. We also wanted to have an entire JVFD Christmas Party on Friday, December 12th. Potluck and BYOB. Does anyone want to have it at their house? It would be for JVFD volunteers (families welcome). Thanks. Colleen

Hey Bill, I just bought a new Stihl. If I remember correctly it's called an 039 Pro-got it wth a 20 inch bar. This saw has a bit more testosterone than my old Farm Boss. If you are looking to purchase a saw still, consider something with a little more get up and go-the difference is huge.

A whole new Firehall with brand new Wildland, tanker and other equip getting built nearby? Perhaps... Drew Chase, whom I work with, has a tree-service and fire-mitigation company which he has run for years, has been on Hot Shot crews, and teaches fallers and wildland chainsaw operation. He has told me about something he is trying to do with his company. He is looking to invest allmost $1million into a new facility that would be a dual purpose situation. He is looking to build a three-bay firehall, with a couple of type 6, a couple of brush trucks, and a special cherry-picking tree trimmin truck (I forget the name). His idea is to use the facility to house and support his mitigation and tree service, and to "lease-out" and contract out his guys to respond to wildland situations when they arise. He is very serious about this. He has met with the city of Loveland trying to work out a deal where they would help get him the land. He has found a 3 acre parcell that woul d meet his needs, but its very very expensive there at the base of the Big Tompson. Yesterday he said, you know, I should try to build it up in the mountains... you know of any property up there and what it goes for per acre? I told him I wasnt sure. As to guessing at cost he needs 3 acres to build on and needs it ideally to be under 150K. His idea is to also build his home on the same parcell. He wants to live in the mountains anyways he said and has come to realize the rpemium he would need to pay in the plains is not worth it. His mitigation crew is booked solid, and most of those guys are wildland firefighters. He sees his crews getiing hired out to fight fires allover CO, and envisions building lodging for firefighters in his new hall. So, how about Left Hand gets the boot from our Hall, we let Drew have a new 50 year lease on half of it, and we split the cost of building a killer facillity that lets him do his thing and better suits our equipment! Well, I know thats probably impossible, but any of you know of three acres anywhere up our canyon where such a business/resource could possible be built? He is utterly serious about this and I would love to point him at a nice location right around our town somewhere!

Please do not take this home as I am responsible for the cassette and requested her to drop it off so I can watch it again. Thanks!! Wild Land Fire Training.
May 11th though the 16th. Sorry no more details have been provided from Boulder Rural. I have been told there are two different classes. One you can take during the regular work week and then the weekend class. Both classes will combine over the weekend for the controlled burn at Calwood Ranch. Soon as I get more info-hours-I'll post.

New Pack Sets-if you have a new pack set, and you follow my earlier instructions, you'll notice it may be set to low, hitting the "C" button again will but it to high. The tx means transmission, so when it is on high it will transmit with about 5 watts. If you are trying to communicate with Boulder Communications and it is on low they might not hear you. I will be working on setting up a communications test with Boulder on our pack sets. I'd like to get 4 or 5 people to spread out across JT on the day of the test so we can figure out if there is anywhere in town limits where we cannot communicate with Communications. Date TBA.

NEXT JVFD TRAINING will be on Wednesday evening the 18th of February at 7PM at the Fire Hall. Please make note on your calendars. This training will replace the normal 2nd Saturday Training (would have been the upcoming one.)
We will keep the training to an hour. We'll cover two different things. Bring your bunker gear for a donning and doffing session. The goal is to get the procedure down under two minutes. We'll also cover the basic response procedures. This will include handours of response protocal and also the page with the fire hydrant locations.
Let's get a good turnout on this one. Pass the word around. Thanks.

With apologies, I'm posting here that we will again be modifying our Training Program for this month.
We had planned on having an hour long evening Training in town here on Wednesday the 18th, 2 days from now. I had not realized that the Forest Service Mitigation Meeting was also scheduled for the same night. We would like as many members of JVFD to attend this meeting as possible. It, along with the Meeting with the Colorado State Forest Service on Friday will be our Trainings for this month.
Here are the descriptions and schedules for the two meetings: US Forest Service will have a public meeting on the South Zone Fuels Reduction of the James Creek Fuels Reduction Project. 18 FEBRUARY 2004, 6:30-8:00 PM Hours Tahosa High Adventure Camp, 173 County Road 96, Ward CO.
and on Friday: The meeting, 20 FEBRUARY 04, 6:30 pm. will be an introduction to Corey Secher and Bob Bundy, Staff at the Colorado State Forest Service along with their facilitator, Deonne VanderWoude of the Student Conservation Corps(Through CSU Forestry).
It would be great to see a good turnout on Wednesday. I suggest that any that are able to attend meet at the Fire Hall at 6:10 PM to carpool to Camp Tahosa. This meeting has a real bearing on the Town and should be useful as a Fire Dept as well.
As far as the meeting on Friday, this may be considered mandatory for any JVFD members. It will be at 6:30 at the Town Hall.
These two meetings will be adequate for this month. Our next Practical Training will be the 2nd Saturday in March, the 13th. Sorry about the confusion over this. Please try and attend these meetings, they will be useful/necessary for our Dept.
We can coordinate carpooling plans here on the QT Board also.

James Creek Fuels Reduction Project meeting is tomorrow night at Camp Tahosa. The James Creek Watershed Initiative has been proactively involved in this process during fall 2003 and has submitted a comment letter on the plan during the initial scoping period, October 13, 2003. You can refer to articles in the last JCWI newsletter ("Design Phase near Completion" by Mark Martin, USFS; "JCWI Submits Comments"; and "Indian Peaks Group Comments") or if you'd like a copy of the comment letter I can provide you with this before the meeting. Comments and suggestions obtained by the Forest Service during the initial scoping period last fall were put into the plan and alternatives that will be presented to us tomorrow evening. The JCWI approach is on a landscape scale with respects to watershed health. The Town of Jamestown did not submit a formal letter to the USFS during that initial scoping period. Another opportunity exists for submitting comments during the official 30-day review period after the Environmental Assessment (EA) is completed. JCWI and members of our Board of Directors will be at the meeting Wed.

Hi everyone, I bought a few things for JVFD today. Two hand brooms, a push broom, rags, cleaner, sandpaper and some boiled linseed oil. Please be sure to use the brooms to clean the station a bit when you are done with training. Also, I have a project with the sandpaper and linseed oil. We have two pike poles (look like long wooden poles with hooks on them). These need to be sanded and linseed oil applied. The rags containing linseed oil MUST BE stored correctly otherwise they may spontaneously combust (yes it is funny we will be treating some of our wooden handle hand tools with this but the tools won't burn, the rags might). If you want to sign up for this let me or another commander know and we will direct you on proper usage and disposal of rags. Thanks.

Jim,
I am not aware of the equipment sign up you are referring to. Bonnie and I are signed up for the wild land training and will need 'something'! Is this what you are referring to? roger

Hi Roger, actually an equipment group was formed after the fire so that we can help ID equipment needs, maintenance on trucks, mechanicall or electrical as well as what do we have versus what do we need for wild land and structure fires. I have a list of people on this group (thanks Tara) and would like to set up a meeting of the minds with the following people: Arne Metzger Bill Duncan Chris Kendal Kelly MacInnis Nolan Farmer Roger Wagner Rudiger Schmidt Tim Penny.

Since I have not gotten any response from people on the equipment team, I am asking for volunteers to show up this Sunday afternoon for about an hour to catalog existing wild land gear. We need to know exactly what materials are missing or lacking so they may be purchased before the wild land class starts. I expect people who will be taking this class to be those responding. Any and all volunteers please respond to me at jim.martella@vspan.com

1st Notice to all JVFD Firefighters!!!, we have a regularly scheduled training this coming Saturday at 0900 (AM). We request, nay insist, that all attend unless you have a damn good excuse (lost a limb, having a baby, etc) for missing out.
We'll be doing some response procedure reviews, a bit of radio review, and driving training. Finally we'll go out and do some engineering and hydrant hookup work. We've missed a couple of trainings here so it would be great to see a good turnout to carry us into springtime.
I'll be sending out another reminder later in the week.
Thanks, David

RE:My assessment of Big Red 4201
As many of you know there have been some maintenance issues with 4201. I personally got involved in JVFD initially for maintenance help. I have learned a lot working with Matt on 4201, but I think it has gained a bad rep. Let me set the record straight:
1. 4201 broke down during Overland due to a procedural error, however, an error probably I would have made in the heat of battle. Wait 3min. for air to release the breaks. (air brakes are fail safe, no air = brakes on). I am investigating relief. 2. The plumbing problems we are now experiencing are due to a PIPE FREEZE NOT OLD AGE. A NEW TRUCK OFF THE LOT WOULD NOW BE EXPERIENCING THE SAME. 3. I have learned techniques to fix this thing by the school of hard knuckle knocks 4. This truck has GREAT PUMP CAPACITY very useful for in town and border situations with hydrant hook-up. 5. We are used to it. 6. I like the hose length carrying capability and pump pressure (400 HP Mack) for fringe areas. (My house would need 800 feet.) 7. Big draw back is maneuverability to fringe locations and fire hall that is all.

A few good points for everyone tolisten to. One, the equipment, whether it be a truck or wild land gear MUST be put back into service after every training, that means if you run the truck to nearly empty, you have to go buy gasoline for it-or arrange for someone to purchase gasoline. It doesnt do us any good to have a truck to respond with if the tank is empty-think about it. Number two, the station was a disaster after Saturdays training, there was mud all over the place including all over big red. This has got to come to a stop people. When you leave the station, it should be clean and all equipment must be back in service and ready to go. If you need to sweep the place, sweep it.
On another note and sorry if I seem a little bent-Im really not, just trying to make some changes and get rid of bad habits!!!!!!!!!!!! The wild land gear situation is pretty much on par with everything else. That is to say we have some equipment in service and most of it out of service because of the very same scenario I describe above. Most of our helmets have been cannibalized, taken apart, straps are broken, shrouds are off or missing, all the new wild land gloves have disappeared, packs are empty, batteries are old, lights are half functioning, we are out of flares, the clothing we have is not sufficient for all members because we do not have certain sizes.
The point I am trying to make is, all this can be fixed but everyone has to be on the same page with equipment and its status (let me clarify that-in service status). I will put out a complete inventory of wild land gear by this evening. We will need to buy flares, batteries, gloves, clothes, head lamps and possibly even some hand tools. Can anyone contact Justin to find out what tool requirements we will have? Do we need to bring any along or are they supplied? How many per person, what type? We have more than a month to get this all straightened out. Lets not wait till the last week to make sure all trainees are ready and fully equipped. By the way, I have noticed that lots of people in FF1 class have already bought their wild land boots so they have a little time to break them in before that class starts-new boots are gonna kill your feet. Think about purchasing soon.
Thanks for reading this email. Its not personal criticism, we just have to strive to be better at what we do and how we do it.
Thanks
Jim

Another point about keeping the fire hall clean.... The EMS needs to use a portion of the metal table/cabinet during every EMS call. We take the bags out of the white cabinet and put them on top of the table. So that means that we need about 5 feet of the table (closest to the door) to stay clear and clean at all times. Our equipment needs to stay clean and some things are packaged sterile. Please consider this need when you use that table and not keep greasy or dirty fire equipment on that end. We all are going to have to pull together as a team to make it all work. - Colleen PS - Thank you to all the fire/ems folks for the new effort in building such a great team!

FOR THOSE SIGNED UP FOR WILDLAND FIRE TRAINING AT CAL-WOOD: Once it's determined what wildland gear (including pants/shirts) is needed, I will put in an order at the CSFS. The boots can be purchased at the Red Wing Store in Boulder on 28th and Arapahoe (west off of Arapahoe on North side). Tell the sales rep that you are with the JVFD for the 15% discount. I will see if they will give us a group discount over the 15% and the JVFD may help pay for all or half. If you've already bought your boots, keep the receipt and wear them 24/7!!

Jim,
I was looking at the laundry tag for the wildland shirt I got last Sunday and noticed that it is made of Indura cotton and not Nomex. Not sure if it is a 'legal' shirt, and how many others may be made of Indura. Mine is a size large if we need to get Nomex versions.

Larimer County News Release
CONTACT: Craig Kern, Larimer County Sheriff's Office (970) 498-5189 or 5207
DATE: March 31, 2004
SUBJECT: Picnic Rock Fire 033104/0730 UPDATE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
This morning the fire is estimated at 400-500 acres with windy, gusts to 33 mph and temperatures expected from 73 to78 degrees. The fire is still burning mostly in grass and brush, but some timber is becoming involved. Eight (8) homes have been evacuated, another dozen have been placed on alert and are being closely monitored. County Road 29C has been closed. Fire fighter safety and structure protection are primary concerns. Two (2) air tankers with slurry are expected soon from Wyoming and North Carolina, two (2) helicopters from Fort Collins and Boulder will be continuing bucket drops, and a Type 2 overhead team will be arriving soon with four (4) Type 2 hand crews on order. Currently the following have personnel ( approx. 40) and equipment involved with suppressing the fire: Larimer County Emergency Services, Poudre Fire Authority, Boulder Wildland Fire Team, U.S. Forest Service, Wellington and Loveland Fire Departments. It is very important that all media with air equipment, (helicopters, etc.) know that a Temporary Flight Restriction "T.F.R." is in effect until further notice and only the 'Command Post' can allow any deviations due to the fact that 2 fixed wing aircraft and 2 helicopters will be in the air fighting the fire. There is no containment or any estimates at this time. Please consult the updates at 970-498-5500.

Notice to all JVFD Firefighters. There will be a regularly scheduled TRAINING THIS SATURDAY (4/10) AT 9AM. Please attend or let someone know that you'll be absent.
What I'd like to do is basic truck/pump training again but add to the equation the use and theory of the Porta-Pond. There has also been some discussion about burning slash, maybe at this coming training. We'll keep you posted.
Congratulations to everyone that's subscribed to the Bulletin Board. I see 21 Subscribers now so we're doing better. It make life much easier, thanks.

Hi gang, many thanks to all of you who participated in the Wild Land Fire training last week at Cal Wood. It was nice to know in front of all the local, state and federal agencies, we had the largest presence!
Actually, I was hoping that anyone who showed up at the training could take some time to go back to the station and sharpen a tool, place a cover on it so it is ready to be put back into service. All you need is ten minutes!!
In the future, this must become automatic, regardless of the equipment used. Why? It makes you more familiar with the equipment and maintenace, you get used to taking responsibility for the equipment you use. Also, you never know just how soon you will really need to use equipment-any of our equipment for that matter.
Please make an effort to step up to the plate, take responsibilty, be an active part of the department, help us service our community when we need to-put all equipment back into a ready state so at any moment night or day, we can respond, quickly, efficiently and with proper tools and safety.
Thanks
Assistant Chief Martella

I did 3 Pulaski's the other night and they are a lot more than a few minutes each (and I only did the axe side, the grub sides are in pretty bad shape.) Hey all, something that has nothing to do with fire-fighting but does have a lot to do with the town. There are two(2)(too) end of the year school plays/events. The first is tonight, Finn MacCool at the School Gym at 6PM. It will be about a 1/2hr event. The other is tomorrow night at the Town Hall at 7PM, a play "My Father's Dragon" and then ther will be a slide show. It would be great to see some town folk out there supporting the school and the kids.

The newer Motorola pager I have has 2 knob controls: On/Off/Volume and Channel Select( ABCD). Channel A is our relevant channel. I keep it tuned to A. Channel D is Boulder County - and gets everything. B&C are inactive. The small round button on top the channel select (ABCD) knob "clears" calls, that is, if there's a call (tone) on A, A acts like D, and you hear all of Bouder 'til the button's pushed. It's valuable to keep it "uncleared" so you can know about other agencies, backup, etc. To the outer (distal) side of the channel select knob , there's a larger button, which doesn't stick out. This is a memory buffer that replays the words in the call. It's unclear to me if this can be recalled multiple time, or if the buffer clears after one replay. The small clear button certainly clears this buffer. The pager chrips when the batteries are low, and also chirps when you turn it on. The chirps are shorter in duration than the tones. My charger does not work, so my batteries (2 aaa) die every 3 weeks. The manual does not explain these things, and is very poor indeed. Jim Martella asked me to post this message.
He is interested in doing another slash burn next Saturday morning, starting at 9:00AM. He sees this as a 'community service' rather than a training session, so he is recruiting volunteers from the JVFD. We will set up the same way as we did last Saturday. If enough folks volunteer we will tell town folks they can bring their slash to the burn area.
Please contact Jim if you are willing to be a 'volunteer'.

Slash Burn Hi everyone, some of you may read Roger's posted message for me. Again I would like to emphasize this will not be a required attendance for training, however, the hours will count toward your yearly requirements. The burn would be a great idea, we would be performing a service to the community, we get training (people will be switching jobs so whatever you did the last training you will be doing a different job!!) So if you want to drive the tender truck and do the water dump-you can! We need at least 6-8 volunteers to make this burn happen, we have a good window with all this moisture and it should take less time than the last one. Anyone interested please RSVP to jmartella@hotmail.com
Thanks!!
Jim

Apologies to all for the SPAM that's been coming through. I didn't think that the QT was suseptible to that crap. They can get anywhere, like cockroaches. I'll keep trying to delete them as I find them.

This is an FYI regarding rain events that may occur over the next few days and what to watch for. As the ground warms up, watch for excessive run-off, particularly from Porphyry Mtn., Overland areas. If a thunder cloud stalls over these areas, be alert with regards to flooding in Town. Keep eye(s)out on culverts (damming) and stream flow, particularly from Little Jim. (Brought to you by our former Fire Chief, Tim O'Dair.)Extra sand bags in town shed. I may be out of Town this Thursday-Sunday...Mary Ellen

LOST
We are missing two new MacLeods we used Sunday at the flood. There really is no need to loose any tools on a local response. If you have seen these two tools, please return them to the station.

We need to think a little about the July 4th Events. We'll certaily be driving 4201 in the Parade (please co-pilots, limited use of the sirens), how about 4250? Anyone want to head up that part of the event? Are we going to be using trucks at the park? Tug of War soaking?
Also, I'm going to need help with fireworks. We'll need to transport and assemble the mortars, do the firing, a few for crowd control and cleaning it up. Ideally there will be maybe ten folks available as necessary. For the actual firework operation my only requirment is sobriety, so please make it easy and don't show up beer-ed up. Otherwise, firing is a real kick in the arse. We'd need your commitment from about 7:30 to 10ish? Please email me or call if you're into helping. David 459-0203 david@jimtown.org
