I'm sorry to say that the BABY TOWNER SHOWER will have to be postponed due to the hostess being SICK with this awful flu. Stay tuned for a new date in the near future OR after our sweet boy graces this earth with his presence! Please spread the word and once again, I'm so sorry!

No RSVP necessary...just come spread the love and join us in welcoming this new, special addition to our Jimtown Family!

I added an on/off switch to 4251 (the Honeywell truck) that must be connected to start the truck. It also needs to be turned off when we put the truck back in the station. It is a knife switch located on the battery. When it in the off position we should leave the hood open so we don't forget to close it!

Volunteers Needed

I need the following volunteers to help out with the Fire Ball:
- people to commit to bringing appetizers/desserts
- people to commit to bringing wine

I'm hoping to raise a bit of money for the department at the Firemen's Ball. So far we have about $1500 in donations for the silent auction and raffle.

Please email me at tschoedinger@hotmail.com or call 303.544.1361 if you can volunteer. All proceed for this event support both Fire & EMS.

           Driving Safety Tips

This comes from FireRescue1.com

1. Leave the station in a safe manner
Mount the apparatus quickly, be seated and belted before the apparatus moves. We've all heard, "It takes too long to dress outside," or "They want to know why it took us so long to roll out …" How about actually getting to the rig a little quicker for starters? Recent test footage clearly indicates unbelted firefighters become projectiles themselves, endangering belted firefighters in the process. So the old, "It's my butt, not yours" cliché does not fly anymore!

2. Drivers: Wait for the bay doors to fully open
This item alone has fractured many fire department budgets and delayed or cancelled countless fire department responses. Drivers: you should be the calm one here, fully in control of your emotions. Make sure that door is fully up before you pull out the door as bar lights and bay door repairs are very costly! Garage door companies love us, ask any fire chief.

3. Drive defensively and professionally at reasonable speeds
You are being watched — have you checked out YouTube lately? We are constantly being observed nowadays. In this era of technology, everyone has some type of picture-taking device; mini-camcorders, cell phones, palm pilots … What's next? Pictures don't lie, do they ...?

4. Know where you are going
Blasting down the road not knowing where you are going is asinine. This should be determined before you leave the station — not after. How about a GPS device for the rig? They are relatively cheap, easily installed and easy to use. A local retailer may even be willing to donate one for a little publicity or a photo opportunity?

5. Always use all required warning devices on emergency runs
It's the law. If it is not a true emergency, respond as such. 911 tapes will definitively prove that first arriving units advised all others to disregard — why where you still responding emergency traffic when your mishap occurred? That's what the lawyer will ask you when you have been involved in a wreck after being told to disregard.

6. Don't exceed your department's maximum speed limit policy
Every seasoned veteran knows it really does not make that much difference in your arrival time. Know your policy and follow it. Significantly lower speeds as dictated by traffic, weather, darkness or a bad roadway.

7. Completely stop at all red lights and stop signs
There is no valid excuse for not doing this every time! There is no further discussion warranted here.

8. Don't drive recklessly or with due regard for other drivers
By doing so, you give the appearance of an idiot — because you are an idiot. Don't be that person!

9. Don't take any chances with negative right-of-way intersections
This is scary to think about, let alone doing it. Departmental SOPs/SOGs should address this. If not, your common sense should.

10. Don't intimidate or scare other drivers out of your way
Never attempt to plow traffic with your air-horns; refer back to number seven if needed. This type of driver projects an extremely unprofessional image, which gives the entire fire department a bad name. It is a fire officer's responsibility to deal with this behavior immediately when notified of such irresponsible and dangerous actions.

Hey gang,

the Engine Boss class that Rob, Cameron and I just took gave me some good info about truck inventory sheets and inspections. I will be working on those items in the next few days and we can discuss our next training if you like.

I did see a few things that we should all be aware of. One 4250 was parked and it was left in reverse. This can be dangerous for the next person who starts it. Also, the hubs for the 4x4 were locked. I am not so sure this is a good idea. I'd keep them unlocked until you need four wheel drive. Remember it's a FORD...

We also have some small brass keys that should not be removed from 4250's key chain for any reason. I will discuss that our next meeting.

4251 was totally dead. I threw a quick charge on it.

4220- EMS may have a left fron tire issue. It seems to be going flat. I will address that tomorrow.

4240- appears ok but will go through it tomorrow.

If anyone wants to get involved let me know.

JVFD...sorry that the slash pile is getting abused. I'm all for opening it only during designated times when someone can watch what people bring, help make it manageable upon arrival and easy to burn, and otherwise keep those who feel the urge to dump their CRAP away! Remember, dumpster day is only 6 months from now! If real COUCH DUMPER doesn't get rid of it within the next week, let us know if we can help because WE SERIOUSLY APPRECIATE ALL YOU DO!                    Division Of WildLife Contact
I spoke to our Division of WildLife contact (I will put his info below) and mentioned to him some of the issues Jamestown has had recently with a bear. I also mentioned the mountain lion that has been seen in town on main street. Right now they will not do anything because they have not received any complaints. I filed one this morning. Let me stress that if you see a lion in town walking around, unafraid, or is acting aggressive, please report it. If you have a bear that is causing problems or acting agressive, please report it. If they get enough complaints, they will come up and try to deal with the animal. If you do not report it, nothing can be done.

I was talking with Quinter last night as he was finishing mowing the park (thanks Q!) and we were thinking it would make a lot of sense to water down the park prior to the festivities of the 4th. I'm wondering if it might make sense to try and do that tomorrow night? We could take 4240 and walk along behing it spraying down the park. We could also do something wednesday morning. What do you think? It shouldn't take long with the capacity of 4240. Just a thought.

So who is committed to going to the pyro training tomorrow? I’m going to have to change some plans but I think I can make it. I’m not very excited about driving out on my own though. Any other carpool folks? I’d be going from Boulder. Sounds like we’d have to leave by 5. The training shouldn’t take more than an hour to hour and half as far as I understand it.

I think we need to have a head count by noon. If we’re not going to have a reasonable turnout we might have to reconsider. So please respond to this email asap.

Anything to add Jim?

A special thanks to those that responded to yesterday's EMS call. It was a good response and teamwork. We will go over the call at our next training on Monday, June 25, 7 PM at firehall.

The EMS vehicle will be out of service beginning today. It will be in the shop and will post when it's back in service. The EMS equipment will be on a table inside the firehall. We will use the old protocol of responding with equipment in personal cars until the vehicle gets fixed.

So is there a plan to do the pack test tomorrow? We were talking about 8 right? Anyone else? Also to confirm, we can do either of these? "Arduous Level: 3 miles in 45 minutes and 45 seconds with a 45-pound pack, or run 1.5 miles in 12 minutes." It sure seems like the 1.5 mile run will be the most obvious. We doing it?

Are we still planning on a burn tomorrow. Should be good provided the winds have subsided.

Let's put together a plan for tomorrow.

It wasn't necessarily the Board that canceled the fireworks. There was some discussion that many JVFD members would be on vacation/out of Town on the 4th. Keep in mind, we can invite other VFD's to participate in lighting fireworks and act as spotters, such as we've done in the past. We've given them free breakfast and shirts. It's also good PR and would give them an opportunity to see our new and improved fire department, etc. Fireworks do increase the profits as well! I believe we've learned from our error a couple years ago and can insist on getting new tubes with the mortars. (My two cents.)

It's also important that during the summer months, that I'm kept informed of those on the JVFD who are out of town and who's available in the event of a fire (structure or wildland). We can always notify other departments that we are short-handed.

Thanks for all you do JVFD/EMS!

Mary Ellen just wrote me that the Town Board was canceling the fireworks because there were not going to be enough JVFD in town. I hadn’t heard anything of this. I know that there was some interest in seeing about a fireworks training so I was thinking there would have been interest in having them this year. As far as the training, I talked to Stonebraker who had a training about a month ago. They didn’t contact us because they knew we’d done a short training last year and didn’t think that we’d need it again. If there was interest in doing it again we could go down for another short (1hr or so) training with them sometime in the next month.

As far as whether we’re putting on the fireworks or not, I don’t know. I am a bit frustrated that we have to revisit this every year. There is clearly some anxiety over this and I’m wondering if it’s worth it. I also know that most folks in town are seriously disappointed when we fail to have them. I don’t see the problem with having them. We’ve always had a good crew and have worked out some issues. Then again, there’s always the stress over the fire danger and making that call. Last year for example we were pressured into deciding early and then in the last week had enough rain to make it more than safe had we gone ahead.

Any ideas? Thoughts?

There was some discussion about sending someone(s) to the firework class this coming saturday. If there is still interest here is some info and registration stuff, http://www.rmpg.org/documents/PGICertInfo07.html

We talked about 1 to 3 people going if they wanted. I'm not able to. I don't think this is necessary for us to be comfortable doing the show but it certainly wouldn't hurt. Registration was supposed to be done by yesterday but I think they'd still be okay with a late one. Contact them and Mary Ellen about it if you want to do it. Again, it's this Saturday the 5th.

Congratulations Rob! And thanks for the extremely relevant training on Saturday. I'm glad I put the women in my household up to the wood gathering detail and was able to make the training. I appreciate the classroom refreshers and the opportunity to apply it, and the logical flow of the lesson planning that will lead up to some great practicals later this spring. It was also good to see Ben and Drew there, and Jena's interest... good to see new faces and continued recruitment. Goodness knows as I age and get more decrepit I might need somebody to help carry my fire pack and schlep ladders :-)

I'm having a bit of a conflict with the training this week as I'd really like to get some of the wood that BoCo Open Space is selling at the Blue Jay on Saturday. I would guess there's a few other folks interested too. It would suck to have a bunch of "outta towners" get first dibs. They say it'll be from 9 to 4. I don't think they've got a huge amount to sell and it should be really nice wood for a good price. Should we think of starting later? Postponing? Stop whining? Ideas?

January 3, 2007

To Whom It May Concern:

In 2005 members of several Boulder County Youth Corps teams, with assistance and supervision from the Boulder County Parks and Open Space department, the Boulder County Wildfire Mitigation Coordinator, and the Colorado State Forest Service Front Range Fuels Treatment Partnership forester, conducted forest management and wildfire mitigation work on the Blue Jay Mine property near Jamestown.

As a result of this work, a number of forest by-products were produced, among them approximately 185 slash piles and residual fuelwood product. These materials were cut in the summer of 2005. During the fall/winter of 2006, most of the slash piles were burned during or immediately following snow events, eliminating the material as a source of fuel for wildfires. The logs, however, have remained on site.

Ordinarily, these log decks would be sold to a single contractor as firewood, but as there exists a local desire for firewood in the community of Jamestown, the BCWMG, in conjunction with BCPOS and the CSFS will be holding a public fire wood sale. Details of this sale follow:

Date: Saturday, February 10, 2007 Weather permitting

9:00am to 4:00pm

Cost: $20.00 per cord CHECKS ONLY Payable to “Boulder County”

You must load your own wood

Please contact Eric Folwell, BCPOS Forestry Specialist with questions at 303-678-6290

Sincerely

Thanks everyone for showing to todays training. I was really happy to see the turnout we had!!!!! I wanted to send you a quick email about a few items.

1) We had a pretty darn good response for the house fire on Mesa St.
2) We also know we need to develope and distribute are SOP's.
3) I did speak briefly with Colleen and we are going to work this out as well with EMS!!!
4) Jeff (someone please pass this on to him) is going to take care of looking into chains and will let me know his findings.
5) Tara and Matt will be working on organizing our current SOP's and will have copies for review for everyone for our next training (if you get electrnic versions please forward!!!).
6) Rob K will be trying to contact Boulder Rural about getting a copy of their FF1 training slides.
7) Arne will be working on finding a supplier for more JVFD Volunteer stickers for your vehicles.

There is one other item, I think we should have a command meeting sometime before the end of the month during the week in the evening. I am open to suggestions. If there are none I will suggest a time and place.

Any FF1's want to volunteer to give next month's training? Please let me know.

Thanks again

Hi gang,

there is training this Saturday 9AM sharp. We will be starting our structure fire classes as part of our winter curriculum. This does mean we will have classroom and hands on. Class will pretty much be like this moving forward in the winter months.

As a disclaimer, I think this is just a start. That is to say after two classes you will not be a structure fire fighter-is a book a book if there are only two pages? Yes grasshopper, you must ponder deep within yourself....ooops back to fire fighting.

As I was saying, this is a start but I also think it is interesting enough to get you more involved in training, fire is a science and that, you will learn-but only if you show up on a regular basis. Personally I am excited about this and in my opinion this is long over due. I will not make you do anything I would not do myself, I will not yet put you in a dangerous position (maybe some day when we get the burn trailer up in town things may get harry for you) and best of all, you will learn how to fight a structure fire SAFELY.

A few items I would like to add to my spam and that I would like you to keep in mind moving forward.

1) We are working on limited time (this is only a 3 hour class once a month!!!!).
2) Mayhem and interruptions will be frowned upon. We really need to use our time wisely.
3) Start thinking about being a team.No I did not say start thinking about the "A Team."
4) Think about your safety and the safety of those on your team.
5) Please be respectful of those people teaching the class. The more sidebar conversations you have, the less the others learn.
6) Be on time, traffic, bus delays, train schedules and flight arrivals tend not to be a problem in Jamestown.
7) Be ready for fun.

I look forward to this weekend!!

                        December Training

This December, we as a department are going to start our structure fire training class. Things will be a bit different compared to what we have done in the past for training. For the first time we will see class presentations about structure fire, fire behavior, safety, organization, Incident Command etc. The second half of class will be dedicated to hands on practice of fire fighting principles just covered in class and not limited to the above.
Training will be different, some of you may not like it, but please be patient, the ultimate goal in all of this is to make us a better trained and educated department in all aspects of fire fighting. It will take your time, your dedication, focus and willingness to participate as a department member to really make us succeed as an Emergency Services Organization. How was that for a run on sentence?
I look forward to this change, I think we need to embrace it as best we can as volunteers and I hope you find it a worthy endeavor for you and for the rest of the community.

The EMS vehicle is parked in the other bay. We thought it might be easier for EMS personnel to open that door-it's much liter. Please note that garage door will lock and should be kept locked. To open, inside there is a white pin just about the inside garage door handle. You much push on it (listen fpr click) and then you can turn the garage door handle to open. Ken Lenarcic also went dpwn to work on the battery and make sure it is snug. Thanks Ken.
Hopefully this week sometime we will be able to take the truck down for logos.

Hi Everyone,

I have confirmed with Bill Powers that we are on for this Saturday at 9AM sharp for a visit and presentation at the 911 Com center off of 33rd St. If you have ever been down to get a new license plate-it is directly across the street from that. Parking is somewhat limited, so I encourage you to car pool. Bill said we can also park in the lot for the Boulder County Clerk, which is exactly where you go for a license plate on 33rd-sort of behind King Soopers.

This is a great ooportunity to meet the Director of Communications for Boulder, sit next to 911 operators and see how they do their job, see the emergency operations command center, Bill will also be giving a presentation on communications protocols, you may ask all the questions you like-I very much encourage anyone who is on EMS and the VFD to attand this training. We only get to go here once inawhile and if you have never been-you'll be sorry you missed it!!!

This Saturday Oct 14, 2006 9AM sharp in Boulder. Please be on time as we will be entering a locked facility sharply at 9AM.

If you have any questions, please let me know-otherwise, I will see all of you there at 9AM sharp. Please pass this on to anyone on EMS whom I have missed.

Thanks

To those in need of CEU's, Chris O'Brien of Boulder Rural has said it's fine for Jamestown folks to attend their EMS trainings. They have two training opportunities in October, which may be of interest to people:
Wednesday, 10/11, 7-9 PM – Stroke
Wednesday, 10/25, 6-9 PM – Shock
Both trainings are at Boulder Rural’s station at Jay and Diagonal
He would appreoacieate a headcount, so contact me if you're intersted.
Chris was also nice enough to donate a bunch of fire and EMS magazines, some of which have online CEU programs advertised. They're upstairs at the firehall.

EMS Team:
1. EMS training is Monday, October 23, 2006 at 7 PM at the fire Hall.

2. Everyone needs to have 12 CEUs by the end of this year to stay on the EMS Team as required by BCH. Pridemark will have provided us with 11 training sessions and 15.5 CEUs by the end of the year if you attended all the trainings in town. This means that in order to get the 12 you had to only miss 2 trainings.

If you are under the 12 for the year it is up to you to call other fire departments and get in on their Pridemark training dates. Ed Gage is looking into this, so email or call him. Since we are providing the trainings here in town, any additional expense is not covered by the town (except for CPR). Please don't wait till the end of October to figure this out because you are running out of time. Many departments don't train in December. Call Nederland, Boulder Rural, Gold Hill to see if you can get into their trainings.

I don't believe I ever saw it Jim. You're obviously not talking about the large Orange Rechargable lights that we've had for some time? It's extremely hard to believe that this one has already grown wings and disappeared. I would hope that if someone really did mistakingly walk out with it that it will be returned to the department anonomously if nothing else.

On that note, if we're really feeling like there's a security problem at the Dept we might consider changing the lock box code and passing it out to current members only.

Does anyone recall a large black spotlight and bag that had a charger in it? It is brand new, was at the fire department and is now AWOL.
