Yehoshua feted

Brilliant Israeli author A.B. Yehoshua is awarded a prize in Italy. I haven't read this book but Mr Mani is one of the smartest books I've ever encountered. Yehoshua is slated to win another prize at an unnamed festival in Manatoba, Canada wherever that is. Anybody out there know anything about this?

You better not move to Israel! The statement about the CFB was brilliant!

This is what passes for news?

I'm moving to Israel. Israeli literary supplements are undergoing changes.

"We can't change reality; that's why we became writers."
The Independent profiles Israeli writer Etgar Keret.

"I don't feel a representative of my generation," he says. "I feel an example of it. There could be a settler my age, or an ultra-Orthodox my age or an Arab -- all these groups are my readers. I have had fan letters from both settlers and Arabs. The anxiety, the feeling of an uncertain future, the struggle to grasp what your identity is, is common to all of us."

Copyright issues, Israeli style

The copyright on popular Israeli poet Haim Nahman Bialik's work ran out at the beginning of the year... what happens now? Well, first of all, I faint to think that a culture cares enough about poetry to be speculating. My copyright should run out right about the time my great grandchildren are finally paying off my debts.

"In our part of the world, the lines between fantasy, invention, documentation and confession are not necessarily as sharp, as they are in other places."

Three Israeli writers profiled in NYT.**
