Black Buying Power Changing PublishingBlack authors forced to self-publish their initial efforts are getting picked up by some big companies. Random House, William Morrow, Ballantine, and others are developing Black imprints. When I was in New York, I often saw street vendors specializing in books for Black readers. The line ups were deep, but the books themselves often had that self-published look (the one you get when you let your cousin design the cover...) I remember thinking, aren't the publishing folk noticing this? There are twenty people crowded around a table selling awful looking books. Put a decent cover on those and some publicity behind it and... voila. Home

From 1936 to 1938, over 2,300 former slaves from across the American South were interviewed by writers and journalists under the aegis of the Works Progress Administration. These former slaves, most born in the last years of the slave regime or during the Civil War, provided first-hand accounts of their experiences on plantations, in cities, and on small farms. Black Chick-LitWith a rise in demand for books with black characters, settings, and themes, I suppose this was inevitable.* Like its white counterpart, black chick-lit often centers on single women with dream jobs, precariously balancing the personal and professional. Similarly, too, these new authors write with insiders' knowledge about the glamorous worlds they chronicle. Neither racially charged nor didactic, these books seem meant to be read on sandy shores from Sag Harbor to St.-Tropez. The protagonists, educated and decidedly middle to upper class, effortlessly mingle with both black and white characters. Love, not privilege, is the only real speed bump. Oh, so it's fantasy, not romance... Home

Write what you know?Should minority writers be steering clear of writing about minority issues? ...it seems that writers who happen to be members of minority groups are getting pigeonholed. I think it has become understood and expected, at least by book editors and English teachers and perhaps by society as a whole, that minorities write about minorities and that white people write about everything else. With very rare exceptions, any essay about a nonracial issue - such as history, politics, science or nature - comes from a Caucasian. Home

Just UsInspired by their childhood's dearth of black role models, a married couple creates a publishing empire for their family and community. "I knew growing up there was a big void, there was no way that any group of people could live on this earth for hundreds and thousands of years and not making any important contributions or not have good stories to tell about their existence. It just did not make sense to me. All of the history, all of the wonderful literature I read was about white people and about the European culture. And so what they really says to those who are left out, and we were certainly left out, that your people really have not done anything or they would be included." Home

The storefront workshopChicago continues to examine its black literary heritage with a brief article on a small but influential workshop. OBAC writers produced the city's greatest flowering of black literature since the Chicago Renaissance in the 1930s. Both movements sprang to life during periods of social upheaval: the Depression and the civil rights movement. The group's workshops were lead by the late Hoyt Fuller, editor of Negro Digest, later Black World. Membership dues paid the storefront rent, and meetings were open to the public. Participants read from their works in order of arrival, with visitors going first. Home

Streetlit on sale in HarlemAs one might expect, the article is a tad condescending: from the headline, to the concentration on the bookseller's wardrobe, to the constant mentions of graphic content, to nasty jab in the last line. If only they could give her the moneyA Phillis Wheatley letter, dated 1776, written from the slave-poet to a her friend, Obour Tanner, is set to go on the auction block. Swann is confident it is genuine. "We not only had it authenticated by a Wheatley scholar, but also analyzed the handwriting, the paper and the ink," Mr. Markowitz said. "You can tell a period letter by the way the ink lies on the paper, the fluid style and the paper itself." Swann will put the letter on view on Thursday at 104 East 25th Street and estimates it will sell for $80,000 to $120,000. (Christie's sold the last Wheatley manuscript that came up at auction - a four-page, 1773 poem titled "Ocean" - for $68,500 in 1998.) Nothing more depressing than posthumous fame. Home

Finally, we can put this to bedA book dispelling black sexuality by one brave black man. Apparently, there aren't a lot of resources to turn to for this kind of comparison. Poulson-Bryant quotes an article he found on the Internet site, the-penis.com, as saying the average black penis size is 6.25 to 8 inches in length and 2 inches in diameter, compared to 5.5 to 6 inches in length and 1.5 inches in diameter for whites. At any rate, the fact that he didn't live up to the stereotype was a source of deep embarrassment for Poulson-Bryant, who wrote, "Why the shame? What had seeped into my consciousness about my emotional self that could be so affected by a quantitative judgment about my physical self?" Poulson-Bryant must feel so very alone. Home

Ghetto litI'm not going to comment on this.... With an extra spring in my step, I walked into the "African-American Literature" section - and what I saw there thoroughly embarrassed and disgusted me. On shelf after shelf, in bookcase after bookcase, all that I could see was lurid book jackets displaying all forms of brown flesh, usually half-naked and in some erotic pose, often accompanied by guns and other symbols of criminal life. I felt as if I was walking into a pornography shop, except in this case the smut is being produced by and for my people, and it is called "literature." Home

I just discovered a web site that has a survey about black male sexuality. This seems to be an under discussed topic and it is good that there seems to be black scholars and academicians who are opening this discourse. This woman, Sadie Sheafe, MSW, LCSW has a web site, www.usamensnetwork.com that has a sex survey for black males. She is a doctoral student in clinical sexology. I would encourage all of the black men to take it and for all of the black women to encourage the men in their life to do the same. I emailed her and she said that there is a web site under construction for black women.

Alert for all travellers to North America: Abuse of Human Rights and Privacy Violations: Racially intolerant white canadian cops and security and their henchmen claim to be despots; following parasitically in the footsteps of their american counterparts, and wilfully engage in their racial profiling of non-whites, in racial harassment of non-whites, and in racially dehumanizing attempts to racially harass non-whites through intimidating physically, mentally, and spiritually; portraying their racial hatred of non-whites through causing wilfull and dehumanizing disturbance to non-whites through using illegal wall-see-through technologies and audio-bugs on non-whites' homes; through listening and watching through the walls of non-whites' rented and owned homes, and through their internet and private telephones. The perpetuators of these evil deeds do this from their cars using illegal equipment slyly given to them by the unworthy cops, and then accelerating their cars loudly and intimidatingly near non-whites' homes and driving intimidatingly in presence of non-whites on streets, making threatening u-turns, driving intimidatingly right up and over sidewalks when a non-white is on the sidewalk, and throwing their ugly bullying weight around, in their shameless acts of cowardice. It is all done slyly, supposedly smartly, however, they cannot fool all the people all the time. The cops also participate themselves to wail their sirens abusively everytime non-whites move and talk inside their rented and owned homes in daily routine living, in addition to having their henchmen, and often, using their non-white gutless henchmen in cars, transport, shopping centers, neighborhoods, etc, to commit these ugly harassing racially profiling deeds at all times day and night. Using non-whites to engage in racial harassment of other non-whites is an obnoxiously evil sinister humanely disgraceful intelligent move of the whites well-known for their ugly divide and rule tactics through their non-white henchmen. It's a shameful disgrace when the so called protectors of law turn into abusers of law themselves and throw the weight of their uniforms and law around as cowards. So, they and their henchmen, appear to be very law respecting on the outside; however, they network cowardly to commit sly acts of provocation to non-whites all the time, which is supposed to be legally acceptable. Is watching through walls of non-whites homes, bugging their homes, working in networking syndicates against them, committing human rights and privacy violations against them, supposedly lawful for the whites? Who makes those laws that favor only the whites? The law itself has racism in its clauses. The ugly inner dirt of the perpetuators of these evil deeds of racism do not deserve to step into religious institutions for their ugly deeds - such as, if you ain't white, you ain't right? Oh! Really? Nicely dressed, beautiful people, magnificient concrete jungles, clean roads and lawns, sweet polite talkers on the outside, full of ugly stench in their souls, that is the cause of these racist policies that are outrightly biased against non-whites. What a shame! Most of these ugly acts of dehumanizing racial profiling depict the cowardice of the doers of these deeds in the real sense, and are done at the behind the scenes insistence of the racially intolerant white cops through their frontline stooges. However, without physical evidence, the white cops, security, societies, and their henchmen are laughing sinisterly at their heinous deeds and the legal system seems to support this evil through its inability to take action without physical evidence. Their racial profiling penetrates public transport systems, shops and stores to do all they can to make the non-whites feel unwelcome in their dehumanizing acts of racial profiling against non-whites and those who don't conform to their nonsense. The white cops, security, and white communities use their henchmen who do just as they are told and from behind the safety cushion of their oil-guzzling, pollution creating, often dark-glassed vehicles to intimidate and harass non-whites in obnoxious racial profiling that reflects the immoral, despotic, and cowardly behaviour of racially intolerant white cops, security, communities and their dumb henchmen who do just as they are told, fuelled as they are in their racial frenzy, thanks to the racially manipulative corporate controlled media. Racism stems from social attitudes that are perpetuated by racist societies, the media, the authoritarians, and the peers. It's time to say, shame on all those who perpetuate racism and racist attitudes. Thank you. |
