The Pig's Back in the PenIn honour of Rush's return to the airwaves, we point you to the classic comic by Patrick Farley. It's a bit dated now, but still pretty funny. Home

Programming NoteRadio Nomad, with host novelist André Alexis, premieres on CBC Radio One, 99.1 in Toronto, Monday, January 19th at 8 pm. André is one of the most intelligent, well-spoken, educated, inquisitive, and down-right awesome people I know, so I hope you'll all tune in. Home

Don't forget Lillian Allen's Wordbeat, right afterwards...
Among other things, she featured a mini-doc by George Elliot Clarke about the oral tradition and poetry.

Alexis needn't worry about his voice; that was the best part, resonating at bass, growling out about Bruce Chatwin, and then really growling. I thought he took some interesting risks and that the show held together. I especially liked the spectre of Chatwin, though the kids were a little freaked, believing that adults don't believe -- the eyebrows went up indeed. Alexis clearly has an eclecticism; it might have been nice to hear longer segments of the music he chose.

Canadian Identity exploredNoah Richler takes a stab at what makes us us in a 10 part series airing on CBC radio's Ideas. McClelland and Stewart will follow it up with a book based on the series as well as a DVD for school purposes and Hasbro will be creating a line of pull string dolls that say erudite things like, "I thought it lacked texture, didn't you, Muffy?" and "I wish all our literature had less bush and more wacked." That whale is out there, manMobyLives radio and its proprietor, the ever-cool Dennis Loy Johnson, get some much deserved good press. That radio show is the highlight of my work day. No wise cracks about the quality of my day. Or the quality of my work. Home

MobyRadio continues If you've been as addicted to MobyLives Radio as I have, you've noted DLJ and the crew adding funny bits to the programming as they relax into the experience. Yesterday was a banner day, with a great "littritcha in translation" bit where they ran a piece of Anna Karenina through an online translator and read it in a deadpan fashion (does DLJ do anything that isn't deadpan?). Also notable is uber-poet David Lehman's funny poem on reviewing. I'll be appearing weekly starting this week, so if you have suggestions for CanLit news stories to cover, please email me. Home

Georgecast I'm on the Moby podcast today doing a Canada report. Who knew there was so little news? I have to get used to this format. Does my voice really sound like that? Home
