Hi Beverley, My daughters have been looking at this site as they are relatives of the Coppings in Rawdon. My husband was the great, great, great grandson of George Copping who came to Canada from England in 1812. It goes down the line as such: George Copping William Copping Samuel Eli Copping Laura Copping--- married Charles Thornton Mary Thornton---married Errol Edgley Richard Edgley---married me Emily Edgley (Patterson) I thought you might be interested in this. I have in my possession the Family Tree from 1812 to 1904 and also a copy of the Diary. (typed copy) The original copy of the diary (which was hand written by George Copping) was found in an outhouse on the farm in Rawdon and salvaged. So that could explain why some of the years are missing. The copy I have was willed to my son by Jean Thornton (Laura Coppings daughter). My husband is now buried in the Christ Church cemetery at the foot of Laura Copping's grave. Emily Edgley If you wish to get in touch with me you may do so at emilyp@sympatico.ca

I have roots in Rawdon, with the family names Gray, Swift, Pigott, Lewis. John Gray (b 1791 in England) married Jane Fiechany (b 1796 Scotland) in Montreal at the St. Gabriel Presbyterian Church on 16 Nov 1821 and they raised their family in Rawdon. John & Jane are buried in Rawdon...somewhere. James Gray (John's son) is mentioned in the Copping Diaries. James eventually moved to Minnesota about 1870. If anyone has any information on these families in Rawdon, it would be appreciated!

Beverly, I think what happened here is that my private email to you was not received because your server thought it was spam. I was not crazy about posting my email address on this guestbook because I saw how all the spammers have hijacked the Rawdon Historical Society group website. Anyway, I am sorry for the misunderstanding. Just let me say how grateful I am for all the information that is available on your website. Thanks!

I am trying to trace down my ancestry and have found that my great uncle was born in Rawdon in 1859. His name was Robert Blair. He had a brother Thomas. His father's name was also Thomas and his mother's name was Ester. I believe that Thomas senior was born in England and his mother Ester was born in Ireland. Does anyone know how I can find out more about these people? I would greatly appreciate any help or information I can get on these people. Thankyou everyone.

For Barbara & Carl & all those other ex-Rawdoners who spent their youth here, I thought it might be of interest to you that yet another symbol of those "good old days" has been demolished. The 5th Avenue Theatre was taken down last week. I admit that it has long been abandonned & left to rack & ruin, but there were many good times in that theatre (many of which we might be better not to discus in public). It was purchsed by the Caisse Pop which is in expansion & the space is to be used for parking. While this building held many memories architecturally it was not of any real historical value, we have lost a few other buildings that have changed the small town look & feeling. The two most recent are red brick house on the corner of 4th and Church & the house next to the English school on Metcalfe. Barbara's comments about parking lots is quite true.

Hello Beverly, I too am glad to find this site. I spent many summers in St. Julienne, and at the beach in Rawdon. Some of my Catholic Ancesters are buried in Rawdon. Unfortunately a few years ago I went to visit the cemetery in Rawdon to get some information on my ancesters, only to find out that many of the headstones in that cemetery were buldozed over a cliff into the river below. Obviously I couldn't get any information there and I was told by the clerk in the Church across the street that there was a problem there also. I'm not sure exactly what happened, but I was wondering if maybe you have information or access to Catholic records there.
Please let me know if you can help in any way.

I enjoyed this site immensely. I use to spend my summers in Rawdon visiting relatives. There are a number of relatives buried in the cemetery of that small Anglican church. Including the surnames of Wright, Way, Campbell & Rothdram.

Is there anyone that can help me with information about the Denton family that were in Rawdon in 1847 and 1848. Daniel Denton and his wife (Esther) had 3 sons (that is known) and they were James Denton (Baptized 5/15/1848 at the Wesleyan Methodist Church by Rev. J. Blair), the other son's are John and Levi. Does anyone know anything about this family? I know that Levi and James are showing up in the 1880 census in Michigan but I assume the others stayed in Rawdon. Thanks for anyone's help.

I moved to Quebec City 7 years ago, and I am intrigued by the migration and opening up of the frontiers in Quebec. As a self-taught student of history, I have found that churches in a historical sense have played a major role as a social and cultural centre. With communties starting, growing and dying in some cases, the church is the legacy of their passing. As I study Quebec local histories, I am shocked that there isn't a provincial registry of ALL the churches in Quebec. There are sites for genealogy and lost contacts, which are meant to be money makers, but there isn't a listing of communities, their churches and dates as a provincial registy. To meet this need, I have started to create a database that I will post on the Web free of charge. If anyone would like to contribute information about their local churches, I will gladly include the information.
PLease email me at ftaylor13@sympatico.ca.
Thank you

/m106This is in reponse to Jackie. (message 106). My gg grandfather was John Denton. His parents were Daniel and Esther Denton who settled in Canada. Esther went to Michigan with her sons, presumably after Daniel died. Many of the descendents of Daniel and Esther Denton remain on the farms that they began in the 1870's, now in Isabella County Michigan. North of Mt. Pleasant.
