I used to live in Rawdon in, I believe, 1951/52. We lived on Church St, right across from the Anglican Church cemetery. Some people I remember are the Cameron brothers (Edwin & Robert), Teddy Christopher, the Grant sisters. I went to the English elementary school. I also remember the Ouimets that had a grocery store on Metcalfe St. We had moved from Joliette and after Rawdon, we moved to Toronto. My mother had died in Joliette, and in Rawdon, we had a wonderful live in housekeper by the name of Olive Scroggie, a life time Rawdon resident. I often think of Rawdon and of some wonderful memories. The principal of our school was a Mr. Ferguson, who was the father of the very famous jazz musician, Maynard Ferguson. I wonder if anybody still remembers me. I now live in Toronto, am 68 yrs old, and my email address is robert388@sympatico.ca One of these days I would dearly love to go back and have a look around the town.

Hello! I am descended from Cornelius Gannon and Eleanor Murray who emigrated from Ireland and came to Rawdon in the early 1800s. His son James Gannon married Ann Skelly--they both died in 1901 and are buried at Ste Julienne. It's so nice to see photos of the area and other information such as the Copping Diaries--it really brings it all to life for me! Wonderful site!

HE BUILT A COTTAGE IN VILLAGE AND THEN HE AND HIS WARTIME BUDDIES BUILT THE FIRST COTTAGES ON LAC CLAIR AND THEY ARE STILL STANDING . I BOUGHT THE RAWDON THEATRE ABOUT 25 YRS AGO WHEN IT WAS A DISCO - USED IT FOR A WAREHOUSE AND SOLD IT RECENTLY TO THE BANK NEXT DOOR WHO TORE IT DOWN FOR A PARKING LOT . I AM JUST NOW SELLING THE OLD SPEAKER AND AMP FROM BACKSTAGE TO A COLLECTOR . WE USED TO RENT A COTTAGE AT GRATTAN LAKE IN THE SUMMERS BACK IN THE 1950'S . LOTS OF GREAT MEMORIES OF A SUPER VILLAGE .WONDERED WHAT HAPPENED TO ALL THE BUILDINGS AND INVENTORY AT CANADIANA VILLAGE THAT WAS OWNED BY THE MOORE FAMILY .AND DOES ANYONE HAVE INFORMATION ABOUT THE ROWAN FAMILY WHO I BELIEVE PLANTED A LOT OF THE TALL PINE TREES NOW ON MOST STREETS IN THE VILLAGE .

Hi all,
I'm researching the names Burgess, Green and Chalmers in the Rawdon area.
My great grandmother was Alice Louise Adeline Burgess born about 1868 and daughter of (as far as I know) Thomas Burgess and Ellen Chalmers. Thomas was the son of Edward Burgess and Bridget Green who were early residents of Rawdon. Thomas and Ellen seem to have died before 1880.
I visited Rawdon a few times when I was young and have nothing but fond memories of the place.
Email me at KenWHam@yahoo.com if you wish to contact me.

I am looking for my Great-grandmother, Mary MOORE born 1841 Quebec.
Her father was Hubert MOORE born 1811 in Ireland.
There was a Thomas Hubert MOORE born in Rawdon in 1847 to a Hubert MOORE & Jane (CUNNINGHAM) ?
Can anyone help ?
Mary MOORE married (circa 1865) William HARPER from England.
They then lived in Montreal & are buried in Mont Royale Cemetery.
Hubert MOORE was with them in Montreal on the 1891 census, a widower.
Much appreciation. Thanks

I have ancestors from Rawdon. Aristide Chevaudier dit Lepine born May 25 1849 and baptised at Parish Marie Reine du Monde. His parents were Apollinaire Chevaudier dit Lepine and Eleonore Beausoleil. The last name may listed as just Lepine. Aristide married Zoe Loiselle in 1877 and moved to Michigan about 1874.
Your website is GREAT! I can't travel to Rawdon, so it is nice to finally know some things about the history.
If anyone has any information on these people, it would kindly be appreciated!!!!

Hello Rawdon! I left in 1979 and finally got back for a visit and good look around in May of this year. I was so pleased to find that despite the growth and changes - Rawdon still had that special appeal for me that I always loved. Hope to retire back there some day, it has always been a very special place to me and I have missed it always.

I am living in Australia now. Would love to hear from any old friends that may still be around, will be back for another longer visit in 2010

Hi Bev,
As far as I can tell from the records down here, the Rawdon is in Quebec. I have a copy of a Burial Transfer Permit showing that my g'father signed to have Fanny Scales sent to Rawdon, P.Q. for interment. She died Apr. 14, 1887 at the age of 35 in Champlain, NY. I think she may have been born in Rawdon
    Thanks for your reply.

Hi Beverly,

Thank you for all the hard work you do in keeping the history of Rawdon alive. I haven't been to Rawdon since my grandmother passed away a year and a half ago (Aggie Campbell) but it's always going to be a place that I love - I spent many weekends and summers and holidays at her house and miss Rawdon very much. It makes me sad to see so much of the area being so drastically changed.

If I come across any old photos I will let you know!

Re: Warren Kenny tracing GGGG grandfather William Cowper, said to have been a Curate at Rawdon after 10 April 1808 Ordination.

There was never an Anglican curate at Rawdon, Quebec named Cowper. The first priest of any Christian faith was J. E. Burton who began his ministry at Terrebonne, Rawdon and district in 1821.

Perhaps he was at Rawdon, NS or in Hastings County, Ontario.

Hi,
I'm tracing my GGGG grandfather who was said to have been a Curate in Rawdon sometime after April 1808. His name was William Cowper, and after his Ordination on 10 April 1808, he was alledgely appointed as a Curate in Rawdon. Dispite extensive enquiries with Lambeth Palace, and other C of E Offices, I've not been able to confirm his appointment to Rawdon. Strangely, I know prior to his appointment he lived in Drypool near Hull, and his wife died there in June of 1808, which seems to imply he was sent back to Drypool rather than Rawdon. Can anyone help?
Thank you

My wife is a descendant of the late 18th century HOLMES, MELROSE, and WEIR families of Rawdon. We are anxious to correspond with any other descendants of these families.
Several years ago we visited Rawdon in the fall. What a gorgeous area! We have also visited these families' roots in Ireland and Scotland.

My GGGGG Grandparents were John Corcoran and Bridget Edwards, presumably of Crossmolina, Co. Mayo. As far as I can determine, they stayed in Ireland. Three of their boys and one grandson worked for the Hudson Bay Company. Presumably John and Bridget died in Ireland, because their sons settled in Rawdon and brought over the rest of their siblings in the early 1800s.

My GGGG Grandfather was James Corcoran (1788-1873), born in Crossmolina, Co. Mayo, Ireland. He was married to Bridget (1788-1855), also presumably born in Ireland. I have not been able to determine her maiden name. She is always listed as Bridget Corcoran.

My GGG Grandfather was John Corcoran, who was married to Catherine McDonald (or McDonnell). I have no dates for either of them.

My GG Grandfather was Patrick Corcoran, b. 1837 in Rawdon. He was married to Mary Markey, b. 1840 presumably also in Rawdon.

My Great Grandmother was Mary Ann Corcoran (1863-1948), born in St-Ambroise-de-Kildare. Her husband was Arthur Fleury (1862-1941), also of St-Ambroise.

My Corcorans married a lot of different families in Rawdon, St-Alphonse, Ste-Melanie, St-Ambroise-de-Kildare and St-Jacques-de-l’Achigan. Some of the names are Daly, Mulligan, Brien-Deroche, McGurrin, Kelly, Landry, Cassidy, Gagnon, Flynn, Rowan, Mullen and Cannon – and those are only the ones of which I am aware!

I can be contacted at cully@videotron.ca - I would love to hear from anybody connected to my Corcorans.

This is in reponse to Jackie. (message 106). My gg grandfather was John Denton. His parents were Daniel and Esther Denton who settled in Canada. Esther went to Michigan with her sons, presumably after Daniel died. Many of the descendents of Daniel and Esther Denton remain on the farms that they began in the 1870's, now in Isabella County Michigan. North of Mt. Pleasant.

I moved to Quebec City 7 years ago, and I am intrigued by the migration and opening up of the frontiers in Quebec. As a self-taught student of history, I have found that churches in a historical sense have played a major role as a social and cultural centre. With communties starting, growing and dying in some cases, the church is the legacy of their passing.
As I study Quebec local histories, I am shocked that there isn't a provincial registry of ALL the churches in Quebec. There are sites for genealogy and lost contacts, which are meant to be money makers, but there isn't a listing of communities, their churches and dates as a provincial registy. To meet this need, I have started to create a database that I will post on the Web free of charge. If anyone would like to contribute information about their local churches, I will gladly include the information.

 PLease email me at ftaylor13@sympatico.ca.

Thank you

Is there anyone that can help me with information about the Denton family that were in Rawdon in 1847 and 1848. Daniel Denton and his wife (Esther) had 3 sons (that is known) and they were James Denton (Baptized 5/15/1848 at the Wesleyan Methodist Church by Rev. J. Blair), the other son's are John and Levi. Does anyone know anything about this family? I know that Levi and James are showing up in the 1880 census in Michigan but I assume the others stayed in Rawdon. Thanks for anyone's help.

Hello Beverly, I too am glad to find this site. I spent many summers in St. Julienne, and at the beach in Rawdon. Some of my Catholic Ancesters are buried in Rawdon. Unfortunately a few years ago I went to visit the cemetery in Rawdon to get some information on my ancesters, only to find out that many of the headstones in that cemetery were buldozed over a cliff into the river below. Obviously I couldn't get any information there and I was told by the clerk in the Church across the street that there was a problem there also. I'm not sure exactly what happened, but I was wondering if maybe you have information or access to Catholic records there.

Please let me know if you can help in any way.

For Barbara & Carl & all those other ex-Rawdoners who spent their youth here, I thought it might be of interest to you that yet another symbol of those "good old days" has been demolished. The 5th Avenue Theatre was taken down last week. I admit that it has long been abandonned & left to rack & ruin, but there were many good times in that theatre (many of which we might be better not to discus in public). It was purchsed by the Caisse Pop which is in expansion & the space is to be used for parking.
While this building held many memories architecturally it was not of any real historical value, we have lost a few other buildings that have changed the small town look & feeling. The two most recent are red brick house on the corner of 4th and Church & the house next to the English school on Metcalfe. Barbara's comments about parking lots is quite true.

I have roots in Rawdon, with the family names Gray, Swift, Pigott, Lewis. John Gray (b 1791 in England) married Jane Fiechany (b 1796 Scotland) in Montreal at the St. Gabriel Presbyterian Church on 16 Nov 1821 and they raised their family in Rawdon. John & Jane are buried in Rawdon...somewhere. James Gray (John's son) is mentioned in the Copping Diaries. James eventually moved to Minnesota about 1870. If anyone has any information on these families in Rawdon, it would be appreciated!

Hi Beverley,
My daughters have been looking at this site as they are relatives of the Coppings in Rawdon. My husband was the great, great, great grandson of George Copping who came to Canada from England in 1812. It goes down the line as such:
George Copping
William Copping
Samuel Eli Copping
Laura Copping--- married Charles Thornton
Mary Thornton---married Errol Edgley
Richard Edgley---married me Emily Edgley (Patterson)
I thought you might be interested in this. I have in my possession the Family Tree from 1812 to 1904 and also a copy of the Diary. (typed copy)
The original copy of the diary (which was hand written by George Copping) was found in an outhouse on the farm in Rawdon and salvaged. So that could explain why some of the years are missing. The copy I have was willed to my son by Jean Thornton (Laura Coppings daughter). My husband is now buried in the Christ Church cemetery at the foot of Laura Copping's grave. Emily Edgley

A few years ago I posted to this guestbook, asking for information on the Samuel Thompson family. Here is what I have recently found. My parents are Barb and Cliff Johnston, my Dad passed away in Dec 2004, My mother (Barb) worked for many years at both Thistle Manor and Heather Hospital, which I see is now a hotel...gosh how things change. Thanks for the opportunity to visit Rawdon virtually!!!

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah Rawdon, for those of you who continue to live there, please know that you have a piece of paradise, so take care of it.
Dont turn it into a paved parking lot with all the trees gone and the river messed up.
I left Rawdon almost 40 years ago, but my heart is still up there on the mountain with the cross overlooking our village.
sure hope I do hear from y'all.

I'm looking for my brother, birth name Clifford Donald Sean Kearns, he may have been called Sean at the time of adoption. In March of 1972 you were placed with your adoptive family. This family already had two children, you would have been the third and youngest. You were born on January 5/1966 in Sept Ills, Quebec at Notre Dam de L'espirance hospital. At the age of seven you underwent successful surgery for an undescended testicle. Your family is looking for you, I'm your older sister, we don't want to hurt any one, we just to make sure your okay.

Ireland to Quebec in 1827 to check things out and then returned to bring his wife, brother and families to somewhere in Quebec?? The ship Despatch they were on hit rocks in Newfoundland when they were about a day away from the port of Quebec and so they ended up in Halifax + Nova Scotia because the wives would never set foot on another ship!!

My dad, Melvyn "Dick" Morel (d., November 3, 1999) retired to Lookout Park (near Masonville) after a 38-year career with Bell Canada. His father used to take the family to Rawdon on summer holidays back in the '30's, and my Dad targeted Rawdon as his retirement destination early in his career.

I came across your site by accident, but find it to be quite interesting. I knew that Rawdon went back some years, but wasn't fully aware of its origins.

The people who put the site together are to be congratulated for their effort.

My mother has eighty years old. For his birthday, I made a research about her father and mother. Around 1939, they had a house on Mason Road,in Rawdon. I found last week this information and I brought her at Rawdon to see this place. My question is: do someone knows something about an
accident in 1939: his father had been shot by accident during hunting activity and he died. Her mother died the year after. She was a young girl. All the children lost any information. I want to discover the nationality of his father John Bobby. We think he is Polonais, but not for sure. Thank you for your attention.

My grandmother was a Mason. Blanche Annie was her maiden name. She lived in Rawdon and then moved to Montreal when she did her nursing degree at the Montreal General Hospital in the 1920's where she met my Grandfather - Dr. Jim Dance. Anyone who would have information about my grandmother's family would be great.

I am researching the Gray family. They came from Ireland , and I believe that the wife's name may have been Maragret. From what I can gather, they were not Catholic. They would have settled in Rawdon sometime before 1830.

My direct ancestor is Thomas Gray b. 1830, who married Mary Jane Kerr/Carr. They had 13 children that I am aware of, including Robert Gray b. 1868.

Anyone who has any Gray family history from Rawdon, Quebec would be of much help: roehea@yahoo.com

This is a great site. I am researching the "Kinshella" family name. My Great Great Great Grandfather Thomas Kinshella is said to have settled in Rawdon. He was born Jan 11 1798 in Ireland and died Feb 21 1879 in Rawdon. He is said to have immigrated from Ireland in 1817 and got his Ticket of occupation on the front 1/2 Lot of Lot 14 range 8 comprising 100 acres on Oct 1 1824. 1825 census of Rawdon lists a Thomas Hinchley Thomas Kinsella sometimes spelled Hinchela. There are many Kinshella's listed in the church records of St Patricks of Rawdon. I have some copies of snap shots my cousin took of some gravestones in the cemetary, where the surname was spelled Kinsella. If anyone has any information on Thomas I would appreciate hearing from them. E Mail bkinshella@aol.com

I think this site is just great. I am researching my husbands' ancestors who were among the first to come to Rawdon, John McEwen and his wife Bridgett Donellan and children of which there many but their daughter Margaret McEwen married John Peyton, son of Henry and Mary Ann (Finley) Peyton in 1850 and they had the following two sons, James Payton born 1851 and John Reynolds Peyton in 1852. After that date I seem to have lost this family until James Payton turned up in Massey, Sudbury County, Ontario married to Marie Louise Bisson daughter of Horace and Pheobe Bisson. I know that John and his wife and Henry and his wife are all buried in the Anglican Cemetery in town. I sure would like to find out what happened to John and Margaret Payton. I have never been able to locate the second son, John Reynolds Peyton either. I hope to visit again in Rawdon someday soon perhaps when the weather is warmer. This site is vey nice and I will be back to visit it each week. Hoping someone else is researching the Peyton, McEwen, Thomas Robinson son of Thomas Robinson, and the William Burns Families. They are all intertwined together along with the Smiley's also.

Very interesting and informative site. I am researching WINTERS & GASS families who were in the area in the early 1880's before moving further west to the Renfrew County area of Ontario.

In your photo album of the St Joh's Anglican Cemetery, there is a photo of the Stafford-Winters grave marker, but the bottomof the stone is broken off. Does anyone know what the bottom of the stone ie "In her ??th year" says? I have a feeling that Sarah Winters may be a sister to my gg grandfatherRobert Winters.

Hello, I spent my first nine years growing up in Rawdon. My family emigrated from Ireland in the 1830's to Rawdon. My ancestory had a farm with a mill on the outskirts. I believe that my grandfather (Albert) and great grandfather (Ambrose) were either reeves or mayors of the town. My father Stanley was a land surveyor and had his business in the town hall from approx 1962-1969. He then went into a partnership and we moved to Ste Agathe. There are still three surviving daughters (Eileen, Clare and Eleanor) and one son (Peter) from Albert Rowan. They are all in Ottawa. Two sons have passed away, my father Stanley in 1976 and Gerald in 1992. The majority of the Rowan's are buried at Eglise St. Patrice in town.

In any case, I plan on visiting soon as I am frequently on business in Montreal,, have not been to Rawdon in quite a while.... great memories and of course my roots are there.

I believe I registered a few years back but perhaps that has expired.

Keep up the great work,,, it is very refreshing to be able to get on the net and converse.

I visited Rawdon for the first time 3 years ago to research the Aelick/Ealick/Ellig/Eligh/Elig family name. First known ancestor, Elias, was born there in 1821. I don't known when they left, and can find no record of them in Rawdon. My McCauley family also came from Ireland/Scotland to Rawdon, then down to Grey County and the Manitoulin. Would love to hear from anyone concerning these families. My email is m.aelick@sympatico.ca.

I loved the town of Rawdon. We camped there and enjoyed touring the area and having coffee in the sidewalk cafe in the evening. Found the people friendly and the staff at the Town Office very helpful.

Hi everyone, Came across this site a year ago and check in to see what's new and take a trip down memory lane every so often. In the 50s we had a cottage in the Crystal Heights area of Rawdon and spent all our idealic summers up there. I only remember certain names (I was only a kid back then)...the Parkinsons, Beverly Desjardan, Hughes, among others. Perhaps someone reading this will remember our name...Boughey? I have taken trips up to Crystal Heights over the past 10 - 20 years; the field where there were only a few cottage and mostly grass, where we'd pick wild strawberries is now all homes and roads...but much remains the same. I love Rawdon... my memories of our summers there are the sweetest I have!

Hi folks! I am a member of the Hamilton family that lived in the Rawdon area for a long time! I am currently conducting research on my family (father Newton, grandfather Samuel (Emily) Hamilton. Many of my relatives are buried in the United Church cemetary. My mother Margaret was, I believe, the first President of the Rawdon Legion Ladies Auxiliary. I am looking for sources of family history to put together a small family history book for my son Alex who (I think) is the last male descendant in our family. Anyone have some good places where I can look for information on English speaking families in the Rawdon area? (my father was bilingual but unfortunatly I am not)Any help greatly appreciated.
I am planning to visit Rawdon next summer to visit the old family farm on the Rawdon river.

Hi, I hope to visit soon as we have traced my husband's ancestor to Rawdon in 1856 and would like to find out more about them and the area. The family name was Manchester and they went west to Manitoba.

I was in Rawdon 2 years ago and fell in love with it. Thanks to Daniel Parkinson, I have found much of my family there. I will visit this site often as I may be able to fill the missing links. Blessings, Shirley

I am forever indebted to the RHS -- they put me back in touch with my GRAY family there. I've enjoyed getting to know about the places my grandparents and great-grandparents grew up.

Hi Bev, I come to this website once a week to see if there is anything new. I am still in hot pursuit of the O'Connors. I feel that the answer to where they came from in Limerick is in Rawdon. I have found so many answers there that I know somewhere the answer to that question is there too. If there is any O'Connor searchers out there please contact me. I LOVE THIS SITE!!!!!!!! Beth

Hello, I am looking for information on an historical site I think was called Canadiana. It may have been in or around the town of Rawdon, Quebec. This tourist attraction was similar to that of Upper Canada Village where antique buildings and artifacts were displayed. Do you have any information regarding this tourist attraction?
Thanks for your help in this matter.
