In trying to clear out my email today, I noticed that we now have a box for SPAM mail. Well I opened it and found 40 + so called SPAM mail that I had never seen. What is so funny, I had 22 emails which were NOT SPAM---to include about 15 that you guys had been sending each other. The others were ASCD, John Norton's Middle Grades Update articles, and Southern Forum for Middle School Reform!!!! Don't know what was objectable about any of these, but I have contacted our technology department to let them know not to SPAM you. I apologize for not responding!! Viagra spam I can do without....but not messages from the Council! Have a great weekend! Betty

The Governing Board meeting was Monday and they expressed these as Partnership needs in their counties:

-Reading Comprehension
-Reading strategies for the classroom
-Fluency for beginning, emergent, and high school readers
-Bringing in nationally know authors such as Ruby Payne (Framework for Poverty) and Tim Rosinskey (fluency)
-EC and NCLB (How do we help them?)

I asked that they discuss those needs with you before you come to the meeting on Friday. At the next GB meeting they want an accounting of how funds were spent this year and what we will be asking for next year. Please come to the meeting with specific ideas for planning. This will be a planning meeting.

If you reply to this message please click on the blue link and go to the site first. If you want to tell me whether you are attending or not please email me at mccalisterlm@appstate.edu I have already heard from most of you.

Reading is essential, but we should plan for other content areas as well.

At the last meeting we decided to plan a Ruby Payne workshop. Several counties are very interested in this including Watauga and Avery. The workshop is the introductory workshop (two days). This workshop has to be attended before we can send someone to the "train-the trainers" workshop. Watauga has already talked with trainers about a date for June 17 & 18 and they are holding those dates until the CC has made a decision. My recommendation would be to go ahead with this so that districts can make plans. Please respond to this site if there is discussion that we all need to be involved in or email me.I will let them know what we decide by Thursday.

Anyone we've talked to who has attended the Framework for Poverty Workshops has been very enthusiastic about the quality and information and strategies gained from the sessions. It is quite expensive for a single school system to fund the workshops, but the CC could manage it. They allow 200 participants. If this is to happen on June 17 & 18, it will have to be booked promptly before we lose the dates.

I went to a Ruby Payne workshop last week in Charlotte and it was fabulous! I reccommend that we move forward with lining up trainings.

I have heard nothing but good things about Ruby Payne's framework. I am interested in participating and I know that some of our principals have also expressed an interest.

Linda,

We decided as a group today that we will use all the slots we are allotted for Ruby Payne on June 17 and 18 (thanks Watauga!). Our people are all very positive about their experience with "Frameworks for Poverty."

Yes,
I do feel we need to do this. I did get an overview of this a few weeks ago and it was good!!
