BOONE—Appalachian State University has unveiled a Web site designed to help members of the region learn about the various educational, economic development, cultural and community service outreach programs available to them.

Appalachian has more than 80 programs, centers, institutes and initiatives that engage in community outreach and partnership activities.

The searchable Web site, www.community.appstate.edu, evolved from and replaces the Directory of Community Service, Cultural and Educational Outreach and Economic Development published in late 2007 by the Office of the Chancellor.

“This Web site, designed specifically with the regional community in mind, is an invaluable resource for those seeking information about university services and programs that support economic development and outreach related to education, cultural activities and health services,” said Chancellor Kenneth E. Peacock.

Please send this your math and science teachers. Math will be included at some point. Thanks

The National Science Foundation has awarded The University of Tennessee - Knoxville a $16 million grant to support the creation of NIMBioS (National Institute for Mathematical and Biological Synthesis). NIMBioS will bring together mathematicians and biologists from around the world to investigate a variety of problems, including disease spread and population modeling. Having NIMBioS so near western North Carolina is particularly beneficial in that the institute is offering a variety of outreach opportunities for teachers of science and mathematics. Teachers can participate in programs that facilitate collaboration with researchers or can go to the Great Smoky Mountain National Park for field-related professional development. Teachers and curriculum officers are encouraged to visit the site http://www.nimbios.org/education/education for more information.

Below is a description of the work the Language Arts PLC did this year with the leadership of Tracy Smith. This is a great example of collaboration in the groups to inform instruction as well as professional development for the teachers in the PLC.

Developed a syllabus for a college middle school course at ASU, “Literacy, Language and Culture in the Middle Grades”. Gathered input and evaluated possible texts for the course. We believe pre-service teachers need more realistic views of the diverse learners and their needs in a middle grades classroom. Created student profiles and put them together in a “virtual classroom” which could be used by pre-service teachers to develop lessons.

Working on an article submitted to the NCMSJ this summer outlining our project.

I will be in Greensboro at the Smart Start Conference, so I will be unable to attend. Hopefully, Keith, Bobby or Holly will be there.
