Student 18:
yes

Ronald:
see figure 5.5. You also have to say what the result of the call will be. A reasonable alternative to the notation used in figure 5.5 is acceptable. Make your answer clear and precise.

Is it okay to answer 8.2 similarly to Figure 5.5?

For number 8.2, is it necessary to draw the snapshots like in a previous problem or can we just put it in a pragraph (or a list of steps taken) that illustrates the recursion.

Mickey -- yes.

Mr. Demar -- for each use of a variable, you need to say which declaration it corresponds to.

I'm a little confused with the wording "activation" in 8.2. Are we supposed to answer how the recursion takes place?

To clarify:

If the function terminates just give the return value.

If it does not terminate write a paragraph explaining what happens and why it does not terminate.

It's asking what happens when you call e.g. fact(-1). So you should explain what happens in this case, in particular whether or not fact(-1) terminates.

For exercise 8.3 it asks what happens when the defined function is applied to the argument-1. So, for example, fact(n) becomes fact(n-1) and replace all instances of n w/ n-1 in the definition of fact()? Thanks for any clarifications.

I just had my laptop taken from the lecture room tonight (2/24). With my data on it, it's worth much more to me than to the person who has it now. Information leading to its return will be generously rewarded, no questions asked. Please contact me via email, the webboard, or my CS department mailbox (in the grad student lounge, 4th floor AP&M), or contact Julie Connor in the CSE department office. Thanks for your help.
