I think this was actually really effective- especially since it was with a smaller group of people so that we could discuss it with more depth. I had fun. Thanks

just got done with the chat....liked it but i can't type as fast as i think. i thought it was good to be able to converse this way but i prefer the good ol' classroom to high technology, call me old fashioned. i am glad to have discussed the slavery article in this forum, however, because i think it definitly could get a little messy if discussing in person. HAPPY TURKEY DAY

I thought the chat room was a good experience. It was a good way to discuss material outside of the classroom in a new setting. It was also neat to hear the opinions of students that I do not normally get to discuss things with in class. The articles were good choices as well because they raised a lot of good points and were good for discussion. This was a good idea and I wouldn't mind doing it again.

It was nice to be in a smaller group and to hear the thoughts of people other than those in my class. It was difficult at times to follow along because the conversation was so fast-paced. When people said things at the same time, I would scroll back up to read what they had said, missing the things they were saying at that moment. But all in all, this was an interesting way to discuss the articles. Thanks

I hope that I am posting this in the right place...I just signed off from the first chat session which took place on Sunday night Nov. 23 at 6:00. I really enjoyed having an online chat session with people from our rhetoric classes. I liked the small number of people in the chat room, because we could really respond back and forth to eachother and not get lost in the messages. Personally, it was easier for me to talk in this chat room. I find it sometimes difficult to speak what I am thinking, but when I can write my thoughts down first, I am able to edit them. Therefore, we all benefit because I don't say something stupid! I think that the chat room was a good idea for our class, even just as an experience. I enjoyed hearing what everyone thought about the articles too. It was good to get some different view points but also to hear my own thoughts backed up by others. Thanks for having this alternative!

I liked the chat because it is at a more conveniet time and we dont have to go to class. However, overall I didn't like it because it takes too long to type what you want to say and you can't respond to comments because other people interject and whatever you were talking about before kind of gets lost in the mix.

I enjoyed our "online class." It is nice to try new things and not have to change out of my P.J.'s! Overall, I think I like the classroom better because the conversation is typically focused on one topic and only one person speaks at a time. It seemed difficult to get a message across in the chat room. I did enjoy it though. Thanks!

overall i thought the chat room was a good idea... it was interesting to hear other peoples' opinions... not just from my class. i definately feel pretty strongly about how the US government is abusing its power... like with patriot acts and whatnot... we brushed upon the issue in the chat room but it seemed that no one really wanted to discuss how our government is heading towards communism... which i guess i semi-understand because a lot of people have a sort of blind dedication to things that they have always known. well thats enough ranting... i hope everyone has a good break...

I liked the chatroom idea because it was convenient, but other than that, it was hard to get a thought in before the topic changed and it was kind of chaotic. I guess I generally prefer the classroom discussions, but it was nice for something different!

I enjoyed the chat session and feel that we should do it again. I found that I was much more attentive than I perhaps would have been in a classroom setting. The only thing that I disliked was that the postings went by too fast for me to think about them and respond intelligently to.

I agree, the chat was very convenient, but hard to stay on topic. Class discussions are more organized. I think the chat also allowed all of us to be a little more free with our thoughts, maybe because there is some sense of anonymity. It was definitely a nice change. Thanks Dr. Fisanick for letting us do this rather than having class on Tuesday!

The chatroom was fun and easy, and many issues were discussed in a short period of time. Ideas can be said faster in this kind of setting, rtaher than a raise your hand setting.

I liked how convenient it was and how I have an extra holiday to spend with my family!
THANKS!

This was an excellent idea, Dr. Fisanick. We definitely covered a ton of issues; the only real trouble was keeping up with everyone else typing. I had a good time and this is a great idea for future classes.

This was a great idea. I feel that it gave everyone a chance to say what they were thinking, rather than having to wait (until the comments were already outdated so-to-speak). The chat is definitely something to repeat! : )

I really liked this format for discussion. It let everyone voice their opinions and a lot more was discussed this way. It was hard at times to follow though cause there were so many people talking at the same time and sometimes about different things. A very good idea though.

i felt that the chat room was a fine substitute for a class period. the pace was brisk and exciting. i would definitely support another chat room class time!

Overall, I felt the chat went well. I had a hard time keeping up with some people---I'm technologically defunct. But other than that, it was similar to a classroom discussion--you had your usual group of people who always participate in class take command of the chat session, and the usu. group of by-standers remaining fairly idle in the chat........a common trend??

Wow! That was fast, but fun! It allowed everyone to get involved and participate in the discussion. We had more discussion in 30 minutes than we get in our whole 8:30 class period! I definately think it is worth doing again.

In the beginning there were so many people talking at once that i could not get a word in edge-wise. In class we all talk one at a time but in the chat everyone can just talk whenever and all at once and it was hard to keep up with what everyone was saying. But all in all i felt more free to say what i wanted to say b/c i didn't have people staring at me and i didn't feel so inhibited in my speech. Overall i think it was a fun change of pace and i would definitely do it again!

Wow, that went by quick! Some of you guys type really fast! I thought I did, until we did this chat. Well, I agree with most of you that it did make it very difficult to discuss the topics because some people were able to get their opinions sent faster than others. There were a couple of times when someone beat me to it. It was definitely very different and did present a very different atmosphere, but I would not be opposed to doing this again. Thanks to Christina for letting us do this. And to everyone, have a happy Thanksgiving! Snow turkeys. LOL :)

I thought this live chat session was a great idea. It allowed everyone to talk openly about the articles, without hesitation. I thought it was easy to keep up with everyone else, and that we accomplished a lot in such a short time. It was a great idea, and worked out well. I would definitely do this again!

i was panicking at first because before I had a coherent argument thought out, my last sentence was cut off. There were so many people making comments at the same time I didnt know if it was rude to cut someone short of his/her argument. Other than that, the chat made the class discussion relatively quick since instead of waiting politely for somebody else to finish in class, we all pretty much spoke at once. It was a good discussion, considering most of the people I chatted with was not of my class. Made it quite interesting.

This chat room was a good idea. It was a nice change of pace. I definitely wanted to type things that other people beat me to -- bastards! Ha...kidding. I just need to work on my speed (if anyone's interested in daily keyboard excercises, let me know, I take this stuff seriously). Our 3 pm chat got fairly involved while discussing the slavery issue. I think the chat was a good substitute for class. At times it was difficult to follow with everyone giving their opinion at the same time, and Id either get beat to my point or the topic had changed before Id finished typing. But it was nice to chat with people from other classes and in a free and relaxed environment. I wouldnt mind doing it again.

I thought the chat room was okay. I found it harder to participate, especially at first because everyone was talking and the conversation was all over the place, hard for me to follow. It was nice though to be able to go to the jennicam website as we talked about it. The slavery discussion was the best, and I was just lost with the other two because people kept jumping from one article to the next. It was a great idea and I recomend it for next year!

I really enjoyed it! I don't have im, so this was really fun for me! And it seems by the time you get done talking, everyine is talking about something new! I am glad I get to sleep in tomorrow, but I actually enjoy our class, and the things we read! See ya and Happy Thanksgiving!

I really enjoyed the small group we had and I heard some great arguments and ideas from everyone (in fact, I'd say that I heard more people's ideas in the chat than I ever did in class). Using the chat room had its rough spots, such as that it was hard to follow, but all in all, I say it went wonderfully.

I found the chat to be an interesting way to talk about our readings. The only problem was that it was sometimes hard to follow and to comment on some things because of all the information people added. But overall, I think that it was a good substitute and would be willing to do it again, anytime.

I liked the chat, my only problem was following the conversation sometimes. Without physical contact it was hard to tell who i was talking with and what was going on. Sometimes it felt like text was just flying up the screen and i couldn't keep up with it. The experience was definitely fun with everyone from the other classes because I'm used to my class's opinions. We've got a very vocal class, but this was refreshing. Overall, though, I'm a fan of in-class dialogue as compared to chat rooms. Maybe with more time spent in a room like this i'd get better at it!

I missed the chat because I was ill, but looking at everyones post...I wished I could have done it. Alough, as some others have said, I dont know if I could keep up with the really fast typers. I also wondered if I would have been able to make my point as well with the chat as oppose to in classs, because it might be hard to write your thoughts. In class, ideas sort of flow when you talk aloud.

I was only able to attend one of the chat sessions for a little bit because of schedule conflicts, but what I experienced I really enjoyed. I agree that it was difficult to keep up with the conversation, especially since you could never be absolutely sure who was saying what about what topic. But I think the online chat sessions allowed everyone, shy or not, to voice their opinion with some what of a feeling of anonymity. But all in all, I'd rather be in class, discussing the topics in person. Maybe I'm just a little technologically slow.

I missed all of the sessions because I was out of town this weekend protesting, but it sounds like I would have enjoyed it. It seems like there was a lot of information covered and opinions stated in the short chat period. The only problem seemed to be the coherence of the conversation and being able to state his/her ideas and thoughts. I'd like to give this a try.

I missed the chat because my computer was not detecting my java scripts, but from what i have heard from those that did make it, it seems that it allowed people to speak more freely about their opinions. I also think that during the colder days it would be nice to be able to attend class via chatroom, though it seems it is a little too confusing for some people to do this more than occasionally.

I really enjoyed the chat. I got to hear from people who normally don't talk in class, so it was nice to hear some new and different opinions. Also, it seemed to flow very well, even though at times i would get behind on the topic and my comment would come in a little late. Overall, I thought it was a good experience and put everyone on the same level for discussion. I would advise doing this in the future.

I had an exam I was studying for so I didn't have a chance to take part in the chat. From the messages I read it sounds like the chat had its pro's and con's. It sounds like people like the anonimity the chat provided, but with so many people responding at the same time the fastest typist was the only one that had their point heard. It sounded like a lot of fun. I'm sorry I missed it.
