Here are two possum pictures

http://biology.clc.uc.edu/graphics/taxonom...e%20Opossum%204.JPG

and

http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http:/...safe%3Doff%26sa%3DN

and here’s some info on possums

http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/huntwild/wild/species/oposum/

Now here’s a rat

http://212.84.179.117/i/Rat.jpg

The creature in question is clearly an opossum. It’s really pretty clear. You can even make out a slight prehensile curve at the end of its tail.

Not a rat. Too big. Tail's too thick. It's an opossum.

Its a RAT (that is what my late father would have called anything that looked like that!) What I would like to see is(a) the look on her face when she notices it (b) when the photographer says back, back, just a little more.
then stop look at that..... she does not look as if she has a sense of humour or is the type to be messed with.

opposum?

Well the question really is why did they use the dead animal in the background for the photo shoot? My guess, anything to keep the viewers eyes off the model and the expected fashion police raid.

Could be a big fat rat. Domesticated ones have tails like that. Or.. it's an opposum or an Australian ring-tailed possum. But i'd bet on a rat

I also believe it is an opposum. Maybe it wondered there looking for food? And hey, the one who should have noticed the corpse should have been the person taking the pictures. The girl posing has her back to the corpse, there is no way she can see it unless she turns around. Don't you think so?
Mike Wilson  64
03-14-2005 09:57 AM ET (US)
The creature appears to be an opposum, but I'm not sure why it's in a "costal marine environment." It's so close to the girl that she must know about it. Not sure why she would stand next to such a thing if it is dead.

This looks like an Atlantic Ocean scene. Best bet is that it is a marine mammal -- a seal.
Jill Anton  42
03-03-2005 09:39 AM ET (US)
The scene appears to be a beach. However, the creature appears to be a mammal that does not belong in a beach environment. I agree, this is very mysterious.

It is interesting to contemplate what the animal is, but more importantly, why is it even in the photo? Is the woman aware of it? Did she have anything to do with the creature's death?

" How do you stop opossums ? " I don't know. Looks like they got the ' x ' behind lovely Sin. Must work on marsupials, because ' x ' is a marsupial ( but not a opossum )

Think about Sin. Where does it look like she's from ? You can see in ' The Big Photoshoot ' here that the photographer is taking the pictures from an angle above her. That's so you can't see so easily that she's wide as a door ! Particularly in the hips !

I agree with Chef, it is most probably a rat. I worked with opossums long ago in a children's zoo, and I'd be extremely surprized to find an opossum that close to the water (which I'm presuming to be salt water).

The animal is clearly some kind of mammal. It is strange that it is in the photo. But I'm more interested in the woman. She will probably never know that you have made her "famous" worldwide, simply by asking about the photo.
Robin Schuh  24
04-21-2004 11:05 AM ET (US)
I have stared at this photo for quite some time. I think the real question is not what the animal is, but how is it related to the woman? For example, does she know that it is behind her?
Guy D  23

What do you mean behind her? That is definitely a possum crawling into her ear!

It's not an American possum. Those are more silve and have less leg hair than that. Perhaps an Australian opossom, then?

Another good question -- is the woman "aware" that a dead animal is on the rocks? If so, did she have something to do with it?
