Welcome! This board is for general discussion of the "sequential_nmbrs" group log. It is NOT for picture feedback, please use the relevant guestbook if you want to comment on a picture.

Hmmm. Numbered list are going to be a bit difficult to manage, since we have banned lately other photos for having other numbers inside.
> Re. rule 2: it should be possible to ask somebody to upload a > pic on your behalf, it has been done in the past, but the author >of the picture must be credited and must have authorized the upload.
That would be the only time to post something from another author.
> Rule 3 is ok IMHO it has been there from the beginning. I would > like to know what you mean with "and the likes" though.
"And the likes" would mean "and similar things".
We could try without the go banner. Then only HOLD banners?
Hugo.

Well if we make new rules or overhaul existing ones, pictures from the past are no precedence. It should be clearly pointed out how many numbers are allowed to be on the picture or, if there are more, the number submitted must play a special role in the composition (see 37 as an example)
I would say only HOLD banners, yes. We had that in the past as well.

These are the rules so far:
General Rules:
1. Stand alone number: It has to be a standalone number and it must be evident in the photo. This means the number must not be a part of a larger number.
2. Original photos: The fotologger who uploads the photo must be the one who shot the photo, that means it has to be the author (no scans from magazines or photos from the web). Any fotologer can ask another fotologer to upload a photo on his/her behalf, the author of the picture must be credited and must have authorized the upload (authorized by asking the uploader).
3. Thumbnail rule: The number must be visible or take a FAIR AMOUNT of area of the photo. That is the number MUST BE the subject of the photo and it must be evident from the thumbnail. If it cannot be seen in the thumbnail then it won`t be valid.
3. The numbers must be from a different source each time. This means that no sequential numbers from hotel rooms (within the same hotel), or dressing rooms, etc. Numbers from pages and similar things are totally out of question.
4. Repetitions: No repeated numbers allowed. If a repetition occurs the first valid number is the one that stays.
5. No made-up numbers: Numbers uploaded are preferred to be from a banner, a sign, etc. No handwritten numbers, computer generated, documents, etc.
6. Only the numbers in sequence will be valid. No numbers uploaded in advance will be valid.
7. A fotologer is allowed to upload as many numbers as she/he wants per day (according to these rules) up to a maximum of 10 numbers per 100 (this rule has been added because there are people who have a huge collection of sequential numbers already), but it is not allowed to upload two or more CONTINUOUS numbers from the same fotologer. The intention of this rule is to give everybody the same chance to participate.
No GO banners, only HOLD banner. The HOLD banners will appear any time a rearrangement is needed.

"Numbers from pages and similar things are totally out of question."
Misunderstanding :-) I know what "and the likes" means, what I meant was it would be nice to have another example besides of "numbers of pages" - what else would fall under that rule? Menu tables for example?

Detail from an insurance broker`s shopwindow in my street, shot a few weeks ago. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Guestbook
bytepusher @ 2003-10-08 08:12 said: Sorry Olivia but I think the burn on license plates should count for even fake license plates... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- limone @ 2003-10-08 08:43 said: Actually license plates were not really burnt. We always said we just should not go for the easy catch, so the license plate should have something special. It`s not that you see a license plate exposed in a shopwindow each day, with exactly the number you need... like I said earlier, if we do that, we may not allow housenumbers as well. And we haven`t had a license plate for quite a long time. And this is a license plate for a small motorbike which we didn`t have at all yet. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- limone @ 2003-10-08 08:46 said: P.S.: The burning of license plates was suggested at one time, but never made it into the rules, exactly because of this discussion. Just for the fun of it I will prepare stats from 1-100 for the different numbered objects, so we see which objects have been used most so far.
I have uploaded an alternative 199 to 2late, but I would like this one to stay. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- bytepusher @ 2003-10-08 08:51 said: Sorry, I am mis-remembering, I thought they did get burned. But don`t worry, the rules will be easier for the next 100 anyway. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- limone @ 2003-10-08 08:54 said: correction: stats from 1-200. I`m just at it, I`m curious what the result will be. :-) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- jvcbrasil @ 2003-10-08 20:06 said: Sorry, Lim.. but they did get burned.. i know, because i`ve translated it.. somedays later, it desappeared.. But i agree they must not be burned.. hard to find! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- limone @ 2003-10-09 03:49 said: They did NOT get burned, it was always only a suggestion, and not a good one, if I may add. It was never approved by all mods that`s why it was only there for a short time. I didn`t even remember they were in the list - Hugo, how long have they been there? I think only for one day because I intervened immediately...

Since I will most probably be sleeping at 22:00 fotolog time (which is 04:00 my time) I upload the 197 right away. If somebody should happen to have a 197, feel free to upload it anyway, we can restore the sequence, but otherwise I would suggest to move on.
I hope it`s ok for the rest of the mod team, too, if not, let me know. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Guestbook

It is not necessary to be in the f/f list of sequential_nmbrs to upload a photo. The f/f comment restriction is to keep the log clean while the 200 uploading time is in course. But you can upload your 200 photo.

@all: Note that the green banner is intentionally always on top of the left column - to make sure that people can read the announcement.
@hukes: I noticed the f/f leads to confusion - sorry. I thought it was a good idea so the admin could still leave administrative messages, but it can be switched on in case such a message is necessary.

saved discussion from hold_223:
10/23/03 Please hold your 223. 218 and 219 were posted by the same fotologger. In the past we have agreed that if there`s no valid submission for more than 48 hours it is possible to take a submission despite of the 10/100 or the no subsequent 2 numbers rule. Usually this is the case if the number is from a person who has posted the last active number.
Strictly spoken, this would only have been possible after 218 had been up for 48 hours - so I`m passing the question to the other mods. Shall we carry on or restart with GO 219?

saved discussion from go_223: 10/24/03 From http://www.fotolog.net/limone/GO 223. OK. Seems the majority (also of the mods although Hugo votes for a rollback) wants to carry on. Note: don`t make a rule of it. The usual procedure is: after a 48 hours break without upload a number may be uploaded as joker which would usually be against the 10/100 or "no 2 subsequent posts" rule. This was not the case here, it would have been if 217 and 218 had been from the same person, not 218 and 219. And remember: if you really really want to get a certain number into the sequence it may be a clever idea to ask if somebody can help you out and upload it for you in case you are not near the computer. Hugo, I hope it`s ok for you. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Guestbook jpinho @ 2003-10-24 13:49 said: @limone rulez! @sleepwalker, you are dismissed!Thanx. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- addadada @ 2003-10-24 13:54 said: hahaha...jpinho....! addadada plays the joker...hey, did i ever tell everyone i was in the BATMAN comic book...really!... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- addadada @ 2003-10-24 13:55 said: now do we have to wait 48 hours for a damm 223 cause everyone is at the grocery store? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- jvc @ 2003-10-24 14:01 said: i`m sorry.. but this is ridiculous.. u are throwing the rules into the garbage.. i`m here to have fun.. and i will still do it. of course.. but. this is still ridiculous.. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- jvc @ 2003-10-24 14:03 said: i only saw jp and pat agreeing with it.. that makes 2.. neither adda agreeded.. I will post my 221 to 2late if necessary and ask if somebody wants to submit it in case I`m not there if there`s a rollback, but I really don`t want several days of discussion here, that`s not the spirit of the log. The "no 2 subsequent posts" rule was there before the 10/100 rule, to prevent that one fotologger dominates the submissions. However, from what I understand the 10/100 rule prevents such a domination anyway so I wonder if the "no 2 subsequent posts" rule is up to date anyway... if you like, this can be discussed in the discussion board: http://www.quicktopic.com/24/H/fKH7g24Gb28-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- limone @ 2003-10-24 14:17 said: @jvc: I don`t think that we will have chaos that way because the last word on the rules has always the mod. That may explain why you get the impression that people who always defended the rules are now defending to break them as you put it. I don`t totally agree with that, though, because in that case it was open to interpretation, pat expressed it very well. At one point, somebody wrote in the comments that we sound like a bunch of lawyers, and he was right. And I had the impression that a lot of the fun that lived here for the first 100 numbers was about to be buried under lengthy rules discussion, and people were rather discussing rule-compliance than the beauty of a picture. Have a look at the ruler 180, there`s part of the discussion. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- limone @ 2003-10-24 17:13 said: Personally, I was never the one who wanted too strict rules, and I had always to defend my numbers which were sometimes considered too small and I wanted them like that because of the overall composition of the image. And I started to miss the "innocent" spirit of the early days. So what I am doing here is to get a little of this spirit back. It`s not easy though, because that doesn`t mean that the doors should be open to cheating or abuse of that "freedom", as it sometimes happened in the past. For example, stolen images will never stay here if we find out about them. Or fake numbers, made-up numbers, anything that`s not in the spirit of the hunt. Hope that could clarify it a little.

Dear Friends
1)Since last week I had observed the numbers around me and could verify that: 1-100= very easy to find 101-250= easy to find 251-350 = difficult to find 351 …= very difficult to find
2) The new fotologers that updated valid numbers to seq_numb were rares, They upload 1 and never more…..
3) The most part of the new fotologers only said: nice, wow, interesting, ……
4) The most part of the numbers was uploaded by 10 crazy guys
5) The interval time between 2 numbers trends to increase day by day, with some exception like 250, 260, 270,….
In my opinion, the above means that the end of seq_numba is coming fast or due to the difficulty to find numbers or people, like us, will give up due to lost the fun.
We need to think about the rules in order to have one more flexible and easy, this way we have a long life.

You can get much closer with a macro specific lens, this is simply a matter of the limits of the focus range of the glass in the lens and manual focus with a SLR is also somewhat easier since the focus through the viewfinder actually works. So to shoot something like this it becomes very difficult, you must back up far enough that zooming results in the grainyness you see here.... Now I`m not wedded to this number if someone has a 238 that pat would like then go ahead. I`d also like to know what camera you`re using bytepusher. My story: I used to be unsatisfied with the autofocus on my Fuji A300 (macro down to 10cm) and the auto and manual focus on the Canon A70 (limit 5cm) for much the same reasons. On the Canon where I have manual control I thought closing the aperture to F8 would help since then an exact focus isn`t such a big issue. However the exposure time increased so much that camera shake became a problem. Things improved quite a bit when I started using a tripod with the timer on the camera, eliminating the camera shake. Using the timer is very important as it gets rid of the shake when the button is pressed. Oh, and I too *always* use the camera on maximum resolution. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- patisfaction @ 2003-10-31 20:16 said: @dada: thnx 4 da propz on 208, but i like da rejected 208 @ 2late or 184 [from same source] much more! but what about el numero ocho?! ^_^ @jim: yr rite alwayz max reso! still haven`t tried a tripod yet, gotta do it.. i have a p&s cam with an AF macrosetting 2.. so it is possible!

Proposed REWORDED English Rules for sequential_numberz
These are the same rules we have been playing under (I hope) just reworded to be a little clearer, especially for new players.
The objective of this game is to find and photograph unique numbers and post them here in sequential order. The competitive aspect of the game is to be the first person to post a particular number.
Rules: 1) Numbers must be FOUND a) No number that the photographer created to photograph is permitted. Additionally no number that by appearance looks like it could have been created by the photographer is allowed, in particular this means no: i) Hand written (including graffiti) numbers unless it is otherwise clear from the context that they had to be pre-existing ii) Computer printouts and typed documents, unless it is otherwise clear from the context that they had to be pre-existing iii) Digital displays where the user can enter numbers (calculators, cell phones, microwave ovens, TVs etc) b) Numbers must be presented as found. No digital manipulation of the subject number is permitted. Cropping and placing insets to show context are allowed as is anything that does not change the main number. 2) Numbers must be PHOTOGRAPHED by the entrant a) Entries must be pictures that you have taken yourself (this is also a requirement of the fotolog terms of service). Pictures taken by someone else are not acceptable and will be deleted. This includes scans of photos out of books or magazines and pictures from the web. 3) The entry must be a photo of ONE NUMBER a) The number must stand alone in the picture and it must be evident from the composition that the number is the subject of the picture. By stand alone we mean that the number cannot be part of a larger contiguous number, in particular extra zeros to the left of the number are not permitted. b) If other numbers appear in the photo they must be clearly less prominent (i.e. smaller and otherwise visually distinct from the subject number) and they must have a clear space separating them from the subject number. c) The subject number must be clearly visible when the picture is reduced to fotolog thumbnail size (100 x 75 pixels). 4) The number must be UNIQUE a) Once a number has been used from a source another number from that source is prohibited unless it is visually substantially different. For example, once a hotel door number has been posted, any other door number from that hotel is not permitted; any other number that substantially resembles that number (i.e. same colour, typeface and background) cannot be used even if it is collected from a different source. b) In the case of car license plates, only one license plate per jurisdiction is permitted. 5) In order to make the game an appropriate level of difficulty some number sources are prohibited as being too easy: a) Numbers from books (page, chapter, figure numbers etc.) b) Numbers from maps c) Numbers from any numbered list (crossword clues, best of lists etc.) 6) In order to keep the game open to many players we limit the number of numbers a single player can post. a) No player can post two numbers in a row. b) No player can post more than 10 of the numbers in a block of 100 numbers (e.g. 100-200 etc). 7) In order to keep the game moving if 36 hours pass without a number being posted then anyone who is prohibited from posting a number by rule #6 can post. A posting made after a 36 hour wait where the users was not covered by rule #6 does not confer any other privileges, specifically if a user has not already posted 10 numbers a posting after 36 hours still counts towards their count of 10 numbers. This is done to prevent users from intentionally delaying postings to earn more future slots thus slowing down the game. 8) When you see a number posted, you can post the next number, there is no need to wait for a banner or other notification 9) If the moderator must delete a number for a rules violation then that number and all of the subsequent numbers are deleted and the game starts over at the last valid number before the violation. Therefore be sure to watch the game in case you need to replay a number. 10) These rules have evolved over time and in the past some numbers may have been posted that no longer fit the current rules. Old numbers that exist outside of the current rules will be allowed to stand but they do not set a precedent for the future, all postings must adhere to the rules as written at the time of posting.

Thanks, bytepusher.
I think the rules are clear the way you rewrote them. Maybe, we mods were so immerse in the rules that for us they were clear enough.
Let's see what the other mods think.

Good initiative bytepusher.
New rules look fine to me.
If everyone agrees with new rules I can help translate it to portuguese.
Nevertheless, I believe that too many rules may make new participants afraid to participate. In order to avoid this, we should only put something like:
# If in doubt about any one of the above paragraphs just post your number, the mods will be the judge.
Other issue that people always complain when I am playing poker is that I made a lot of rules and this slows down the games discussing the rules, but I believe that we already did a lot of this in the past 100 number. To have all the common sense rules written now seen as a good thing.

Sounds like a good idea, basically, just a few comments:
> 2) Numbers must be PHOTOGRAPHED by the entrant > a) Entries must be pictures that you have taken yourself (this is also a > requirement of the fotolog terms of service). Pictures taken by someone > else are not acceptable and will be deleted. This includes scans of > photos out of books or magazines and pictures from the web.
It should be possible to upload a number for a friend who is not able to upload the number in time, though - while giving him/her credit, of course. But the friend must have asked for the upload.
> a) Once a number has been used from a source another number from > that source is prohibited unless it is visually substantially > different. For example, once a hotel door number has been posted, > any other door number from that hotel is not permitted; any other > number that substantially resembles that number (i.e. same > colour, typeface and background) cannot be used even if it is > collected from a different source.
That could become difficult esp. with license plates. The typeface for license plates is always the same within one country, at least in my country.
> b) In the case of car license plates, only one license > plate per jurisdiction is permitted.
What does "jurisdiction" mean? Country? City? I would rather limit the number of plate pictures per participant and 100s. We need them to fill the gaps, since it's more and more difficult to find numbers anyway.
As soon as we agreed on the new rules, we need a translation into Portuguese, plus I was asked to provide a German version.

I have two questions:
1. About numbers from books, ok it's prohibited page, chapter, figure numbers etc. But if the number appear in the middle of the text? Can I post?
2. Why it's not accepted left zeros? In Brasil, the license plates have 4 numbers, and so they are all invalid until 1000! For example, just now, my license plate is 0287, and I can't use it, and the game is stopped because no one have the 287! I think a 0287 = 287, why not? Well, thats my opinion...

For numbers in text, this would be OK as long as it does not cause a problem with the rule about typed documents, so you ghave to be able to see that it is not a typed or computer printed document, so for example the 179 that is a price from a catalogue would be OK because you can see that this was not just a laser printout. If you can't tell the difference between something from a book and something the could have been printed on a laser printer then it's no good.

# 300 contest rules - English and German Could somebody please translate it into Portuguese? =========================================================== OK, here are the rules for the contest: The contest will have three phases: phase 1: submission period (48 hours) phase 2: voting period (48 hours) phase 3: vote counting period and announcement of the winner PHASE 1/Submission period: Duration: 48 hours Starting time: will be indicated through a "#300 contest: upload your 300" banner uploaded by one of the mods Please upload your #300 submission. Rules for the submissions are: - pictures must comply with the sequential_nmbrs rules (see "about"), most importantly: they must be your own work. If you submit a picture for another fotologger, it must be with his/her consent and stated clearly in the description. - only one submission per fotologger. If you submit more than one, only the first submission will count, other submissions will be deleted. - participating fotologs must be at least one week old (just to ensure that people don't open new logs to get more than one submission in) - Note: you can participate even if you have used your 10/100 quota, also if you have submitted #299 or plan to submit #301. During phase 1, commenting will not be possible. For discussions, please use the QT discussion board linked under the f/f list: http://www.quicktopic.com/24/H/fKH7g24Gb28PHASE 2/Voting period: Duration: 48 hours Starting time: will be indicated through a "#300 contest: cast your votes" banner uploaded by one of the mods. (Difference to previous contests: Votes entered after 48 hours, but before upload of the banner will be valid.) Commenting will be re-enabled right after uploading the banner. The first comment by the mod who uploaded the banner will serve as timestamp for the banner. The rules for voting: - Only one vote per fotologger - You cannot vote for your own picture - Cast your vote by writing a comment "I vote for this one" under the picture of your choice Other comments will be deleted. You can still use the discussion board for other comments or picture discussions: http://www.quicktopic.com/24/H/fKH7g24Gb28PHASE 3/Vote counting period: Duration: as long as it takes to count the votes ;-) Starting time: will be indicated through a "#300 contest: voting is closed" banner. Commenting will be disabled during phase 3. Please use the discussion board for comments or picture discussions: http://www.quicktopic.com/24/H/fKH7g24Gb28After the votes are tallied, we will announce the winner. The winning #300 will stay. The others will be deleted - if you want your #300 to stay, please upload it after the contest to http://www.fotolog.net/2late. If you have more than one #300, please also upload it to 2late. And, one of the most important questions: WHAT WILL BE THE PRIZE?? First of all, fame, of course. Second, the winner will get a higher quota for uploading pictures: 15/100. Which means, (s)he can upload up to 15 numbers between 301 and 399 instead of usually 10. (Why this rule? I vote for this one".

These are the rules for the contest: # 300 contest rules =========================================================== OK, here are the rules for the contest: The contest will have three phases: phase 1: submission period (48 hours) phase 2: voting period (48 hours) phase 3: vote counting period and announcement of the winner PHASE 1/Submission period: Duration: 48 hours Starting time: will be indicated through a "#300 contest: upload your 300" banner uploaded by one of the mods Please upload your #300 submission.

@leolecal: difficult. In the past it would not have been valid. According to the "evolved" rules, a handwritten number is valid if it is clear from the context that the number can't have been manipulated by the photographer (see jvc's pavement picture for example)

Re. the comment under Pat's submission. I have posted the comment issue which apparently leads to confusion when it's on f/f only to the official Fotolog board: http://pub22.ezboard.com/ffotologfrm9.show...ge?topicID=28.topicI really don't know what to do to avoid this confusion. If we close commenting altogether during upload, all comments become invisible, also the timestamp and older discussions. Also, people might think they are not allowed to upload a picture at all. So, when in doubt, please ask! Unfortunately we do not have the possible to add an information banner that's always visible on all pages, and apparently it's not enough to explain it in the rules ... ???

Question to all: Example: If you want to vote for this picture: http://www.fotolog.net/sequential_nmbrs/?photo_id=3580386please write "I vote for this one" Otherwise I cannot tell if your comment is a vote or not. Thank you! ======================================================== How to handle the other votes? I had to ask Babelfish to understand some of them, and I can't do that with all comments, plus it was set clearly in the rules. I think "this one gets my vote" or similar is ok too, but it has to be clear from the wording that it is a vote.

My idea: if we campaign for people to vote for our photos then I'd say we have to accept the negative (i.e. we run the risk of losing voting space from unwanted comments) as well as the positive consequences. I think it makes the contest more interesting too.
Note: I campaigned on my flog & have lost voting space because of miscast votes.

too late! but in the past we have deleted non-vote comments anyway, especially comments with inappropriate language.
Here's an excerpt of the contest rules:
- Only one vote per fotologger - You cannot vote for your own picture - Cast your vote by writing a comment "I vote for this one" under the picture of your choice
Other comments will be deleted. You can still use the discussion board for other comments or picture discussions:

like I said, too late, and it was stated in advance that none voting comments will be deleted, under any picture. I just can't permanently check all comments, so it is necessary that people point out when comments need to be deleted.
By the way, are here any volunteers for a mod job? I will definitely not return after my holiday break, and it seems that it is important that we have a mod from Brazil too.
Jpinho is not the only one who is campaigning like this, btw. ;-)
One important reason why non-votes have to be deleted is to prevent sabotage. Otherwise people could just flood a guestbook to prevent that a certain picture wins - and I mean ANY guestbook. As long as we don't have a decent poll system, we have to stick to this one - unless we switch to voting by e-mail for the next contest (like fotocats does), but this will be the job of other people then. ;-)
In general, it seems it would be a better idea to exclude campaigning for the next contest (in the sense of leaving comments in other people's guestbooks asking them to vote. I think using the own log to add a link to the competition is something different) because it's rather a popularity contest than a photography contest then. Just my 2 cents.
Unless it's supposed to be a popularity contest. ;-)

Dear Seq_Numba Friends In the last #200 contest I complain a lot about campaigns made by other fotologers, in my opinion no campaign must be permitted and NO thumbs with the contest numbers should be showed at left side. Only must be permitted in our flogs : Please vote at #300 contest : http://www.fotolog.net/seq_nmbrs. This is a fair election!!! Can you imagine Mrs. SINISTRA, participating of #300 contest and doing the same of Pat??? Sinistra would be the winner, of course… Pat has a beautiful fotolog and crowded of comments and friends , when he upload VOTE FOR ME he has a big advantage ! Pat and Lampiao uploaded the same photo….please see how many votes each one have….a 300D Digi Rebel…Why this difference??? When the #200 contest was over , I decided to show to my friends how to be a winner with a trash 300….I decided to make a story ( Rasta man), to become myself a ridiculous guy ( marketing appeal ), and to do an aggressive campaign…yes a spamming a lot….I spent about 3 hours asking people to vote for me ( in the same way Pat asking people to vote for him at his flog) and I win. I used a lot of dirty tricks (but do not cheat…)- only imagination and a ridiculous photo with a marketing appeal for those crazy day…. ….but I am not comfortable with this, J-Rasta-Pinho is the winner not Jpinho…. Dear friends, I do not want to be the winner and the glory, I only want that next #400 contest a fair campaign where all of us have the same chance. In my opinion the winner goes to Mr. JIMSK with his beautiful, artistic, original and firing #299+1 matches. Jimsk do not make an aggressive campaign like me and Pat. His #300 isnt Digitals machines, Road signs, House numbers…… OK Mod , you decide……….You can choose any other #300 , not mine #300, because I only want to joke and to show how easy is to be the winner….. ;)) jpinho ( not J-rasta-Pinho) Hey Limone, do not count my votes , will be lost of time….hehehehehe

OK jpinho, I see your point.
Re. the thumbnails: I understand what you mean, but if this were true, addadada's pic would have much more votes than it currently has. Plus, it has never been an issue in the 100 and 200 contest, and I wonder why.
You know what I think? The most fair system would probably if submissions are sent to the mod by e-mail, and put in anonymously. This way, only the picture itself gets the vote, and after voting is over, the photographers behind the pictures are being revealed. Of course this would exclude signatures in pictures, and some styles are just unique, but nevertheless it would take the personal element out a little.
All this experience should certainly influence the process for #400, but like I said, I won't be involved anymore. It's time for the mod team to get some new fresh blood. Hugo seems to be away currently, I hope he's doing well, so maybe the log will go into a creative break after Christmas - unless there are other people who can support the mod team (super8 is not available on a regular basis either). Time enough to get things straight an also to form a new team (with the consent of Hugo, of course).

Re. leolecal's 300: it is valid, we had discussed this right after his submission. It falls under the new rules that handwritten numbers are ok if it is clear from the context that they can't have been made up by the photographer.
re. thumbs: I have shuffled the thumbs now (by changing file dates) to give some other pics exposure on the left side. Too bad I didn't have this idea earlier. Plus, voting time is extended for another 24 hours.
As for justice in contests: well, most contests are not really fair, when it comes to that. One way would be to have an independent jury of people who know lots about photography, and of course, also about the rules of s_n.
Come to think of it, maybe a shootout would have been better. ;-))
P.S.: Yes, I saw sinistra's vote yesterday already :-)
By the way, I would have voted for your picture WITHOUT ANY CAMPAIGN right after you submitted it just because I thought it was creative and funny, if I hadn't reserved my vote for kmc's pic, which is still my favorite because of the very nice subject, although it could be improved a little in the photographic aspect (other format, and stronger zoom).

I do not think that it is a fair contest if you are allowed to post the same picture in your own flog and make advertisement for it. I think it is better to send the pics to the mod and let him post them, so nobody knows whose pic it is.

Just for the record: if the picture itself is bad or boring, a campaign won't help. See my own 300 for reference. ;-) I used an alternative version of it to announce the 300 contest without giving a direct link to my own submission (bearing in mind what we had discussed the last time), and the result was that the only vote it got at all so far was posted in my own flog. ;-) (Only after that I added the link to my pic).
But I'm all for the anonymous contest version because then we can be sure that it's only about the photos and not about the people behind them. :-)

I tell you... ... even if you spend a lot of time considering your rules... ... and even if you take a lot of time to put them in more than one language... ... and even if you put them up wayyyyyyyyy ahead of time so folks can digest them... ... you'll still get a lot of complaints and misunderstandings! Here's the rules for the Your City Holiday Lights Festival Contest: http://www.fotolog.net/your_city/?photo_id=3150943And believe it or not, I've already had more than 20 submissions even though the contest doesn't officially start until December 28! One rule that I'm most emphatic about is that pictures may not be placed on a contestant's own log until AFTER voting is over. I get quite a few complaints about it, but you know the way I look at it is, if you want the prize, by Gum you'd better follow the rules as they stand. (arms crossed, foot stamp, hair toss!) I have no problem with people scaring up votes. Indeed one reason I host such events is to drive traffic to the group f'logs I manage. You know I had more thoughts to share with you but my three-year-old is pitching a fit. argh

Been out all day and just got back from a very (very!) late night party and found this discussion. I'd just like to say what I think.
I really don't see any problem in jpinho campaigning for his current photo - it's within the current rules. Besides any other aspects he obviously spent a lot of time and effort on his entry. We all know how much time he (and others) dedicates to this group and how deserving it would be if he won the competition and could thereby send 15 instead of 10 photos in the next phase. There are few of us (and I doubt I'm one of them) who could submit 15 worthwhile photos to the group and help to keep it alive. The only thing it does show, and I'm just repeating what others have said, is that the rules probably should be changed for the next contest. And if the rules are changed to prohibit campaigning, I agree that campaigning in users' own guestbooks should be excluded - the more "popular" people (whatever that means) would have an unfair advantage.
Got to go - the wife is saying I should go sleep at this hour! Peace etc.

OK, guys, one question: I posted the rules for the contest in advance. Why didn't we discuss and remind of such possible problems BEFORE the contest started?? And I don't mean the discussion right after the 200 contest - this was months ago and as far as I'm concerned I didn't remember or even was aware that campaigning could be such a problem (plus, see TeraGram's comment, in other contests it is even encouraged). There was absolutely no feedback to the rules posted here and in s_n.
I will later upload a banner, but the counting will be done by another mod a little later, so plz be patient.
And let me just say this: IMHO each of the current Top 3 deserves to be the winner, they are all regulars of s_n and all make good pictures.
Don't be too serious about the 15/100 quota, there's the 36 hours joker anyway, so what the heck. If there's no new pic after 36 hours, one could (theoretically) upload 50 pics to the group... ;-))
As for the popularity topic: I think we covered this already with the suggestion of anonymous submissions by mail and revealing the identities of the photographers AFTER voting period. This is a new idea with came up with this contest.
However, let me add a thought about campaigning in general: As I pointed out earlier, a boring or even bad picture won't get many votes, no matter if there's campaigning or not. So, to be successful with a campaign, you have to put some effort and creativity both into your submission and your campaign.
Of course, if you are famous AND good it's easier (see Sinistra example), but I would bet if the submissions are anonymous, the results would not be that much different. But to be sure, you have to try and experiment. :-)

jvc: I consider most of the people whose photos I know & like here, through their fotologs and group logs, "friends". Just for the register, I have (incredibly) never met jpinho though we live close by and share an interest in sailing and photography. I empathize with him. In the same way, I love many of your photos, and your valuable contributions to volta_ao_mundo and consider yourself as much a "friend" as jpinho. (Note that I did not vote for jpinho's photo this time round and posted a previous message here which, if the suggestion in it had been implemented, would have prejudiced jpinho's vote). For much the same reasons I consider Pat and limone "friends", and hope that these feelings are reciprocated (even if Xmas weren't just round the corner!)
I think what's important is that the 300 contest has brought us some great photos and is improving all of us in terms of imagination and photography. Frankly, I'll be happy whatever the result (even if jpinho wins!)
Peace etc.

jm, u know i like u very much here in s_n, in VAM and in your own flog. I loved your shot, specially because of the caption.. but being sincere and looking for the votes gave from us, regulars in s_n.. in my opinion (no.. in s_n regulars opinion) the best ones were the ones from Rodrigov (votes from me, you, pat and kmc), the great truck 300 from kmc From Lim, zwigmar, Byte and leolecal and mine (i got votes from adda, leolecal -voted 2times!!- and rodrigov)
i was just tired of seeing jp saying that your was the best when not even he voted for u..
in my opinion, if the election was fair, using anonymous shots, kmc or rodrigov would be the winners..
I apologize.. i did think u are friends from sailing.
Frankly, i'd be happy if kmc's or rodigov's were the winner, never if jp was the one

OK, proposed new rules taking into account the comments, it's been really fun the last couple weeks with lots of numbers and no rules problems until today.
Mods can you please take a final look at these and decide if we want to make them official? We will need translations obviously.
Proposed reworded Rules for sequential_numberz
These are the same rules we have been playing under (I hope) just reworded to be a little clearer, especially for new players.
The objective of this game is to find and photograph unique numbers and post them here in sequential order. The competitive aspect of the game is to be the first person to post a particular number. If you are a new player you do not need to read these rules in detail immediately but please at least skim read rules 1-6 before posting.
This includes scans of photos out of books or magazines and pictures from the web. b) The only permitted exception is that you can arrange for another fotologger to post an entry by proxy if you know you will be away, this must be announced by the poster in the photo description, for the purposes of rule 6 the posted number is treated as if it came from the entrant not the proxy poster. For example, once a hotel door number has been posted, any other door number from that hotel is not permitted; any other number that substantially resembles that number (i.e. same colour, typeface and background) cannot be used even if it is collected from a different source. b) In the case of car license plates, only one license plate per player per block of 100 numbers (e.g. 100-199) is permitted. 11) All postings and guestbook comments must adhere to the fotolog terms of service which includes a prohibition on profanity. The first time a poster violates the TOS on sequential_numberz the offending material will be deleted by the moderators and the poster will be asked not to repeat the violation. Second offenses will result in a ban from the game for some period up to permanent at the discretion of the moderators and a report to the fotolog admins. 12) Interpretation and enforcement of the rules is at the sole discretion of the volunteer moderators here, they created the game and put a lot of effort into making it work, so their word on any matter is the law, a single polite counter-proposal is permitted if you disagree but anything else could be grounds for a ban so be nice.

These are the rules for the contest: # 400 contest rules IMPORTANT ADDITION FOR CONTESTANTS FOR THE #400 CONTEST: NO CAMPAIGNING ALLOWED! This means: if you participate in the contest you may inform people about the contest in your own fotolog. You cannot upload your contest submission to your own fotolog (or any other fotolog other than sequential_nmbrs). You cannot ask people to vote for your picture and/or put the URL for your contest submission in your own flog. Spamming other peoples guestbooks is not allowed. Participants who do not respect this rule will have their submission deleted. This rule is meant to give each participant equal chances, especially less popular participants. =========================================================== OK, here are the rules for the contest: The contest will have three phases: phase 1: submission period (96 hours) phase 2: voting period (96 hours) phase 3: vote counting period and announcement of the winner PHASE 1/Submission period: Duration: 96 hours Starting time: will be indicated through a "#400 contest: upload your 400" banner uploaded by one of the mods Please upload your #400 submission. - participating fotologs must be at least one week old (just to ensure that people don't open new logs to get more than one submission in) - Note: you can participate even if you have used your 10/100 quota, also if you have submitted #399 or plan to submit #401. During phase 1, commenting will not be possible. For discussions, please use the QT discussion board linked under the f/f list: http://www.quicktopic.com/24/H/fKH7g24Gb28PHASE 2/Voting period: Duration: 96 hours Starting time: will be indicated through a "#400 contest: cast your vote" banner uploaded by one of the mods. (Difference to previous contests: Votes entered after 96 hours, but before upload of the banner will be valid.) Commenting will be re-enabled right after uploading the banner. The first comment by the mod who uploaded the banner will serve as timestamp for the banner. The rules for voting: - Only one vote per fotologger - You cannot vote for your own picture - Cast your vote by writing a comment "I vote for this one" under the picture of your choice Other comments will be deleted. You can still use the discussion board for other comments or picture discussions: http://www.quicktopic.com/24/H/fKH7g24Gb28PHASE 3/Vote counting period: Duration: as long as it takes to count the votes ;-) Starting time: will be indicated through a "#400 contest: voting is closed" banner. Commenting will be disabled during phase 3. Please use the discussion board for comments or picture discussions: http://www.quicktopic.com/24/H/fKH7g24Gb28After the votes are tallied, we will announce the winner. The winning #400 will stay. The others will be deleted - if you want your #400 to stay, please upload it after the contest to http://www.fotolog.net/2late. If you have more than one #400, please also upload it to 2late. And, one of the most important questions: WHAT WILL BE THE PRIZE?? First of all, fame, of course. Second, the winner will get a higher quota for uploading pictures: 15/100. Which means, (s)he can upload up to 15 numbers between 401 and 499 instead of usually 10. (Why this rule? I vote for this one".

um... re. rodrigo's metric ribbon... it's a great pic, but if I recall that correctly we had said that rulers are out because they offer too many choices of numbers... I'm sure there's a 100, a 200 and a 300 on that ribbon too??

Yes Lim.. we've (Rodrigo and i) discussed about it.. I said it was not valid and tried to proove with the rules.. but there's nothing in the rules about it. (where did RULERS went for?) So.. we cannot invalidate it. But i do think we can ask Rodrigo to shoot something else if he can, and put it in the rules.
by the other side.. Rodrigo and i think that if rulers are not valid, so house numbers should not be either, because they are part of a metric system or a norma sequence (at least here, the house numbers follow meters between the doors, and in Brasilia, they are sequencial: 1,2,3,4,5,....).

I think Rodrigo's foto is out of rules. One of my shots was labeled of invalid because had more than one number with same size of the number in context (#370). In this case we can see one #9, a #1 and a #2 with same size of #400.

Jimsk has reason. My first upload to seq_numb was a 120, from a measuring tape and was considered out of rules.
one of burnt options was scale....
I did upload a compass number ( 135 ) and was considered out of rulez too -> scale!
Sorry, but this 400 isn´t valid! ;0)

They are still there in the Portuguese version, as I just noticed. We had a discussion about rulers when there was a beautiful shot with a somewhat antique ruler, that's the only time when they could have disappeared but I tend to believe that it was just by mistake while doing the update.
P.S.: oh well I thought "rotulos" = "rulers" but apparently it's not. I cannot imagine that we took them out on purpose... did we?

@jvc: in the end almost every number is part of a list, no matter if it's a house number, a model number, a license plate... if we burn those too we will probably never reach the 500 mark... ;-)
The point with rulers was that it is just too easy to take a pic of a number on a ruler, just like it is with book pages. To take a pic of a house number, you have at least to go out and walk or drive a little bit until you get the desired number. And the higher they get the harder it is to find one.
On the other hand, a measuring tape with a 400 on it is not that easy to find either.

Hy fellows. I do agree with rodrigo. Firstly, the 400 is in evidence. It is in focus and in red. And you will agree with me that is more difficult to do this kind of shot then shoot house numbers. I disagree with Limone. Its not that difficult to photograph house numbers. To make a valid scale shot it should be the right scale and a lot of work. I think Rodrigo spent a lot of shots and light setups to find the correct one. It doesnt occur with a house number. I think its a good occasion to put in the table the discussion of the difficult of the shot. Its easy to found a scale to shot. But its not easy to make this shot a valid shot. I think that the rules must incentive good shots. Not the contrary. What do you think ? ;-)

I agree with both lampiao and jvc (is that possible? :P).
I think that the shot is really good (point for rodrigov) but it's something that was in the rules before and, for some reason, it's not there anymore. I mean, one of the burnt options is 'no rules or scales allowed'. I agre with that, but in the other hand, i think this is a contest, therefore, it should be valid (you can vote for it or not).
As we were talking about the rules before the contest, i think of an idea for the next one: invite some others fotologgers to judge the pics. First of all, stablish criterias (focus, composition, subject, 'unique shot', etc) and let famous photographers (that have a fotolog) to judge. I think with that nobody is going to doubt the result (i mean, there will be no excuses to complain about).
It's just an idea. ;P

@leolecal: it's an idea but I think it makes things too complicated. Currently the audience is the judge (in German the word would be "Publikumspreis", word-by-word-translation "audience prize") and so people know which pic others like most.
A professional jury knows nothing about the spirit of s_n, this means the criteria would probably be completely different from what we usually like in s_n.
Plus, I really don't know who's going to do that extra work (inviting people, establishing criteria...)
@lampiao: the problem is another one. The rule should say something like "if you do a scale shot, make sure it's a really good one", but then, how do you define "good"? Speaking from my POV, it's more effort for me to go out (especially in the cold we have right now here) and search for a higher street number (we don't have many of these high street numbers) than to take a pic of something I find in my own home.
If we make a rule or an exception, we also have to know how to react when we get a really low quality submission.
@jpinho:
"for me it seems to be a 40 and a 0 (the other numbers are 9 and 1..)"
um... actually I see it the same way. There's a clearly visible line between the 2 zeroes, so it's actually 40|0.

well about the doubt about if it's a 400 or 40 and 0, i can photograph all the ribbon to show that at every 10 cm there's a number like 10, 20, 30,...90,...140,...400 and all them have the " | " in the middle of the nºs like: 1|0(ten),..., 11|0(a hundred and ten,... 40|0(four hundred centimeters). you know that trace is to indicate the exactly place of the measure...i thought every single ribbon in the metric system was like that...sorry!
maybe we could make a fast voting between us to know if my 400 stay or get out of the contest.

re. torre_a's voting: alright it's suspicious but the rule that a flog must be around for one week to participate applies to uploading a photo, not to casting a vote, so it's not against the rules, at least not for the rules for the #400 contest. (I don't say it's good but actually we cannot argue with the rules in that case... :-/ )

Fact is that we don`t have a regular mod currently, so either we find at least one new mod who can be there on a regular basis and help out or we have to stop the whole thing until Hugo returns.
The voting time had been extended for one day since Fotolog was so awfully slow during the last days that many people couldn`t connect to the site or leave a vote, also it was not possible to check the pages for valid votes. This has been discussed in the QT board.
Oh btw, ANYBODY CAN COUNT VOTES AND PREPARE STATS (thanks for the last stats btw :-) ). So, instead of just whining, what about doing something constructive and helping out, when it`s obvious that some help is needed?
Yeah, that sounds pissed and it`s intentional. This is a community project, so it would be nice to see the community behave like one - the mods don`t have any benefit from the contest, the contests are there because you want them, but if this project shall survive, participating in it is a bit more than writing comments and uploading photos.

thanks, lchico! rodrigov is valid, though, we had discussed this.
I cannot connect at all to fotolog right now and have to go to bed now (it's close to 1 after midnight over here).
Anybody else trouble connecting? re. proceeding after 400: the 401 was not valid, too small. As I said, I have not much time currently, so all I can do is delete an invalid upload here and then, but there's no time for long rebuilds. However, you don't need a mod for discussing images or rebuilding a sequence by doing re-uploads, that could be a community thing as well... right?

what about this new 421? is it a printout or not?
the rules say: burnt option
"Typed documents (Printouts like receipts, tickets or similar are acceptable if the source is trusted and the person that posted it is a sequential_numbrs regular. regular means: must have a minimum of 5 accepted numbers in the sequence.)"

Hi, I want to be a good participant, but I have two questions. Are decimal points ok? Say that gas goes to 6.49 per gallon (God forbid), would that count as 649? Other question, supposed there are a bunch of numbers on a sign, like 6.49, 7.20 and 5.30; can I just pick the number that I want to use for sequential and sort of void the others that might be seen in my photo? Or should I try to zoom in so close that no other numbers show? Thank-you. Delina with Pixelation, Abundance, Equine & Angles.

These are common point discussed before..
The numbers in commas, points and so ever are not valid. Just try to read it. Instead of six hundred and forty nine it's a six point forty nine, so not valid.
About many numbers, the important thing is: is the number you want to show the subject of the picture? i mean, you can have small numbers on it, but the 'wanted number' should not be part of a bigger number. I guess using the zoom is always better.
Well, this is my opinion.. let the other mods pronounce theirs. ;)

yes...per rule #9...If the moderator must delete a number for a rules violation then that number and all of the subsequent numbers are deleted and the game starts over at the last valid number before the violation. Therefore be sure to watch the game in case you need to replay a number.

Credd, I hope you get some discussion in and do something special with 500. I thought it would just be everybody that wanted to could post a 500 as sort of a celebratory thing, no win, no lose, just 500s. Or maybe the best looking 500, or most original or whatever. I like the former idea better than the latter. I have a 501 I was wanting to post but didn't think we were in danger of starting 501 yet. Well, we'll see. I'll be watching for new instructions. :0)

Hi, I have a question about the 400 series that just ended. I got 10 valid numbers. Do I get to do 15/100 next time for the 500s, or only if I win the 500 contest? Is who gets the most valid numbers out of 100 a contest? If the only contest is just at the hundreds mark, then why were people teasing about only have "1" and others had "4" etc. I remain confused.

******** OK, here are the rules for the contest: The contest will have three phases: phase 1: submission period (96 hours) phase 2: voting period (72 hours) phase 3: vote counting period and announcement of the winner PHASE 1/Submission period: Duration: 96 hours Starting time: will be indicated through a "#600 contest: upload your 600" banner uploaded by one of the mods Please upload your #600 submission. - participating fotologs must be at least one week old (just to ensure that people don't open new logs to get more than one submission in) - Note: you can participate even if you have used your 10/100 quota, also if you have submitted #599 or plan to submit #601. During phase 1, commenting will not be possible. For discussions, please use the QT discussion board linked under the f/f list: http://www.quicktopic.com/24/H/fKH7g24Gb28PHASE 2/Voting period: Duration: 72 hours Starting time: will be indicated through a "#600 contest: cast your vote" banner uploaded by one of the mods. (Difference to previous contests: Votes entered after 72 hours, but before upload of the banner will be valid.) Commenting will be re-enabled right after uploading the banner. The first comment by the mod who uploaded the banner will serve as timestamp for the banner. The rules for voting: - Only one vote per fotologger - You cannot vote for your own picture - Cast your vote by writing a comment "I vote for this one" under the picture of your choice Other comments will be deleted. You can still use the discussion board for other comments or picture discussions: http://www.quicktopic.com/24/H/fKH7g24Gb28PHASE 3/Vote counting period: Duration: as long as it takes to count the votes ;-) Starting time: will be indicated through a "#600 contest: voting is closed" banner. Commenting will be disabled during phase 3. Please use the discussion board for comments or picture discussions: http://www.quicktopic.com/24/H/fKH7g24Gb28After the votes are tallied, we will announce the winner. The winning #600 will stay. The others will be deleted - if you want your #600 to stay, please upload it after the contest to http://www.fotolog.net/2late. If you have more than one #600, please also upload it to 2late. And, one of the most important questions: WHAT WILL BE THE PRIZE?? First of all, fame, of course. Second, the winner will get a higher quota for uploading pictures: 15/100. Which means, (s)he can upload up to 15 numbers between 601 and 699 instead of usually 10. (Why this rule? I vote for this one".

Thank-you so much, therichard, for exposing this one. I just logged on and realized it looked very much as if it were not the work of the submitter. I looked through his/her flog and found ego shots, a stolen sharpei image and someone giving the finger... not exactly the type of photos I would think someone who was able to do the airplane and people shot would do. But I couldn't prove it and you did. Color it gone... (an expression meaning consider it deleted) Thanks again.

I browsed through her flog and I thought: well, maybe her father has an airplane industry and he's the kind that does everything for the daughter who is very spoiled and recently had a bad argument with him and who knows how fell into the sequential number fotolog and decided to participate in the contest to test how much her father loves her, and he stoped the assembly line for his little girl to make a nice picture and win a contest he never heard of...
but then I decided to google it... in portuguese: numero 600
how sad I was to find out my story wasn't true...

Good morning to tatianaf, jimsk, therichard and dimilinchen who posted on 2late. It is probably afternoon where you are. Anyway, I am having posting withdrawals (Ha Ha) because the guestbook is closed during the submission phase of the contest. Don't worry if you get a little warning. Apparently it pops up when the guestbook is closed. Anyway, nice to see all your smiling faces. :0) ~Delina

Thank you Delina! I knew the guestbook was closed, it was written at the rules (message 257). Btw /silver_fox was not a week old when he uploaded: http://www.fotolog.net/sequential_nmbrs/?photo_id=8055876his picture from /silverfox is much better anyway. I hope he doesn't get mad about this!! Nothing personal!!Even if we are here just for fun, rules are rules and we have to follow them!! :)

Hi tatianaf. I couldn't imagine what you meant that silver_fox wasn't yet a week old, because I knew I had helped him with a picture way more than a week ago. I figured out he has 2 flogs silverfox and silver_fox. But even the newest one is July 1st and he posted the picture July 8th, so that is a week. As long as he doesn't try to enter under both names, I think he'll be OK. He was a really good sport about his license plate getting booted off, and it would seem he is interested in following the rules. You have S_N's best interests at heart, and that is good. It is late at night here where I am, and I haven't looked yet. I need to go see who posted what in the last hours. ~Delina

therichard, Yes I could remove the don't post it yet, but get it ready banner, but then I would need to move all the many comments to the "comment depository" and I can't read them to copy and paste them, and I can't post them to the depository until the comments are back on. If I turn the comments back on for a time, so I can do that work, then people could comment that shouldn't be able to right now; and it could be a big mess, if some got angry why they didn't get through and others did. :0) I'm hoping it is pretty obvious that the 600 contest has actually started. We're getting some entries. Thanks for your contributions both in pictures and in comments. ~Delina

Delina, in case the picture I uploaded is not valid, I can upload a new one. From what I read in the "about", it seems to ok. I just had a little doubt on the "stand alone" rule: my number is not part of another number, but there's another number in that picture. I can crop and re-upload in case it's not valid. let me know.

Fotolog is *full* of problems at the moment. All the comments on all the photos of the "d" guestbooks have vanished (hopefully temporarily) and many other guestbooks (including those beginning with "j" such as my own, but see also those beginning with z and 2) are wrongly reported as being "backed up".
Curiously enough, the last time this happened was when... sequential numbers ran the 500 competition ;-)

Basically, everybody, yes, there are some major problems with our group on Fotolog right now. We moderators are essentially paralyzed to do much but wait. I have written to Fotolog 3 times, and they say they are still working on it.
So maybe we go take some other numbers, and maybe we browse around with many of the nice flogs. It is beautiful weather, but a little hot, here where I am in Oregon.

"Do not type anything other than "I vote for this one" under the 600 you like best. If you comment about liking it, disliking it, or any other things, your vote will not count. You must vote for someone else other than yourself."

Richard.. yes.. something went out of control since Limone quit this work here.. Then, the game was with NO control.. but with a very nice help from credd.. but she also quit. THings were going completely uncontrolled.. the mods delleted a 470 WITH NO explanation... they simply deleted. No one assumed the action..
ok.. then Pat, A MOD, posted a ridiculous 475.. never accepted.. EVERYBODY said it was invalid.. ut.. as there was no mod.. the ridiculous number stayed.. but i don't. I quit waiting for a mod to delete the ridiculous 475. nobody did NOTHING.. maybe they have fear of Pat.. i don't understand. actually.. we couldn't find ANY mod.
One thay, Pat recognized the error.. and uploaded a ONLY 475 banner.. but then.. deleted it.. and things stayed as it was..

Delina became mod and SUPRISE.. became the most agressive, nervous, and agressive mod i ever saw here.. but ALWAYS only doing what Pat says.. ALWAYS.. as she doesn't have any self thinking.. acting like a robot.. review the messages.
he says: blurry.. she deletes.. he says "my shot is good' she keeps
but ok.. i'm out only reading agressive words from delina.. like the last on at the last post @ seq_numba.. JEOPARDIZE something..
she forget that we only was trying to help.. see te discussion biear how many shot i said it was taken from the internet.. like u did here.. and she answer things like "SHUT UP.. than this contest came.. and winners from the last contest didn't participate.. because every one is FULL of these agressive and non sense mods that do only what they want and not what is written on the rules.. where's me (winner of 500)? Lampiao (of 400?) jpinho (quitter winner of 300)?? all quit.. and also Rodrigov, a regular since the 200's here
WE ALL HAVE AGREEDED that the 6 spaces at the left MUST BE FILLED WITH BANNERS..
THIS IS USED SINCE THE 300 CONTEST
this is to be fair. what happened is that everybody wsa waiting to be the last to post.. just to have the shot with more expusure.. like Yours and Pat's have here
but SURPRISE.. in this contest.. they did nothing.. and we only remembered the mods.. (see the message i post)like "hey mods.. fill the 6 spaces with banners"and we receive one more agressive and ridiculous answer from this sick delina..
bah.. and we got no answer..
and .. oh.. i didn't talka about problems with jpinho.. with popdesign.. with rodrigov.. whit some people that appeared, tried to help the game and receive "nice" words from the "mods"..
oh.. i must remember you all.. i'm from the 100's here.. i've translated the rules to portuguese.. and i miss the time of Hugo and limone.. oh, how i miss it.

But it's easy to see why these ridiculous mods (the same that leave this game more than 3 days stopped and with not valid shots posted with NO action.. and now only be rude when the regular oops.. ex-regular. try to help and remember the rules to the ones that must knew).. so. ot's easy to see why they "forgot" to post 6 banners to cover the last shots as we all agreeded to do fot the contests (we did it for the 300, 400, 500)..
of course.. pat's shot and delina's shot have the advantadge of beying superexposed.. they will not do anything..

Oh plz folks... calm down a little, will you? Moderating a high level group is always stressing, and JVC, I realize there are some things you are not happy with, but on the other hand: you were asked to join the mod team and said you can't because you have already enough work with your other group logs, if I recall that correctly. Fine... but plz accept that the folks who are doing the work here have to do it the way they consider to be the best, everybody has the chance to join the mod team and to influence the decisions. I know that there can always be different opinions, but believe me, it is actually very difficult to moderate a group like this and making everybody happy at the same time. It takes a lot of energy, and I can absolutely understand if people sometimes have to make quick decisions w/o long explanation. The alternative would probably be no moderation at all, and that would be the end of the group.
Just my 2 cents...
P.S.: I have voted for Delina's shot w/o even knowing it was hers because I had forgotten that she's pixelation. I just liked the cute story behind it and just wished that I could post the explanation with my vote w/o making it invalid. I agree that there should be additional banners - but I accept the decision of the people who are doing the work here currently.

Yes, limone.. i understand you.. and yes. i know it's not pulitzer (whatever this prize is)
I just can't accept a mod that take a pic off and put a photo taken by himself - with no explanation
I just can't accept the arrogance and agressive words from Delina.
I just can't accept that the group made a rule.. and the mods doesn't follow (the 6 banners rule)
I jus't can't accept a mod that post 2 invalid shots like the one that had a dot and a slash.. and that 475
as i, jpinho, rodrigov and the otthers were only playing.. we are all out.. we'll play something else.
we don't accept these mods.

JVC, I'm new to the game, I just posted one number so far, the 591, plus the 600 for the contest. I don't know what happened in the past, you might even be right, but I just don't agree with and don't accept your way of dealing with the problem. If you have some issues to be cleared out with the modz, keep it between you and them. Don't use the event - the contest - to make a personal statement. Because there are many involved other than the modz, and they might have nothing to do with you and your problems and/or don't agree with you and your "gang" of followers (aka jpinho and rodrigov). By trying to interfere with the results of the contest you are disrespecting me and many others that want to play a fair game. You don't approve of the way modz manage the game, talk to them. You still don't agree and don't want to play the game? Fine, don't play the game. I don't care, since you keep it between you and them. All right?
By the way, Yoda is a Jedi Knight, the Master.

/m288 Rodrigov Hi, Your point that the rules made it sound as if you couldn't post anything except "I vote for this one" under the 600 picture you were voting for, but that other places to post might be OK, was a valid point. It did sound that way. Posting under the banner, however, provided an inconsistent amount of attention to anyone who posted there, perhaps with campaigning for the picture they liked, or perhaps with scolding the moderators or fotolog about some grudge. Or as one person did, posting about a completely different topic when they have been banned from positng at S_N at all. We have this discussion board, and we have the comment depository. You were being polite. Some people were not. Your comment was not deleted. It was moved to the comment depository.

/m288 Rodrigov I just realized that I didn't address part of your comments which can be seen by clicking on the /m288. You were saying it was unfair about the banners not covering the entire left column of the page; so that the people who posted toward the very end got to be on the front page, perhaps an unfair advantage. I know for a fact that during some of the last 300, 400 & 500 contests that there were people who posted right toward the end, apparently to get that advantage. I saw them in the 500 for sure. It was not all banners at the beginning. It maybe became all banners later, but I remember wondering what if people waited too long, and technical problems kept them from getting in, they would get caught in their own trap. For the record the last 4 entries in 500 were patisfaction, lampiao, jvc & zwigmar. 400 contest last 4 were lampiao, jimsky, neptuno & rodrigov. 300 contest were addadada, patisfaction, lampiao & jvc. You can surmise any number of scenarios from that information. It doesn't really prove or disprove much. As far as all banners, I think it looks boring. It is a lot of work, and has to be all removed later. I am NOT the only moderator. I am just the most active one. There are other moderators who can take a little poll, and if all banners win, they can do them. ~Delina

/m302 tatianaf Hi Tati, Rodrigov and I volunteered to be moderators at almost the same time. I didn't really know him and he didn't really know me; so it wasn't a competition. I thought we both might get accepted. Instead, I was accepted and he wasn't. I do not know why. You would have to ask Rodrigov what they told him, or ask the other moderators. I had nothing whatsoever to do with why he nver became a moderator. Some people seem to think that we moderators are on some nefarious power trip. I just enjoyed playing the game and had the time and ability to do some moderating; so I volunteered. I have never told anyone on this group to "Shut up". That is not my style. Of course when I was brand new, I tried to comply with the moderator who seemed to be the most active at the time, Patisfaction. As I grew more accustomed to my role here, I haven't always agreed with all the other modz, but we take little polls & try to be fair. Sometimes, if someone is out of line, we don't take a poll, we just use our own judgement. We are a group of volunteers.

The Richard.. U see i'm not at this game anymore despite many claims that i return.. not me, not jp, not rodrigov, not lampiao. podesign.. and many others that don't agree with these mods. I'm really sorry if you understand wrong. Who is not playing fair are the mods. i'm not participating at this contest. I have a 600, that i think is really nice and put at 2late (u can seee it there). i'm soo sad, because i was keeping this 600 for the contest. What i'm trying to show here is that these mods are THE ONES that are not following the rules that THE GROUP made altogether. You can check i'm the one that is trying to have a fair play here! Just click here: http://www.fotolog.net/sequential_nmbrs/?photo_id=5605801ang go clicking on NEXT button 6 times.. you will see that the spaces on the left MUST be filled with banners. THe reason is clear.. the one that posted the last pictures (oh.. what a coincidence: PAT and DELINA DID!!!!! ), have a huge advantadge! And u can see clearly that they are not playing fair because in ANY moment they answered my complains!!! Why??? because they have no answer!! I don't have anything personal with them.. U don't know.. but pat and i are friends and toggether mods of /eye for months.. i'm a fan of his shots. But i really got ungry with his attitudes here. He posted an invalid shot.. everybody complained! EVERY.. and he NEVER said a word or showed the full shot. continue..

Continuing. read the below message firs, The Richard: U can see here, that when a shot is suspicious like this one: http://www.fotolog.net/sequential_nmbrs/?photo_id=5106009the group ask the photographer to show the complete picture to make sure that the shot is really valid. And Lampiao did it: http://www.fotolog.net/2late/?photo_id=5280162so.. what we ask for Pat??? To show the full pic.. HE NEVER SHOWED IT ans as he was the ONLY mod here..(not participating as a mod.. but unfortunately a mod) he simply ignored our complains.. so i quit the game to put some pressure. but he never even said a word! We, THE GROUP are really OFFENDED with the person that we really thought must be the one to give the example! But NOTHING! now.. again w/ this contest.. they are wrong not putting the banners.. but they are the only mods that appear (pat called some mods.. after the 400 contest.. but they seem to be dead.) But as i (even quitting the game i love!) like a fair play.. i begged them to put the banner.. Do you know what was the answer i got from them??????? NOTHING NOTHING oh.. i'm wrong.. i received an agressive message from this lady with captions.. seemed for me that she is yelling at me 9and for me it really sounded like a "SHUT UP, U BAD F*ING GUY"). look at it: "sequential_nmbrs @ 2004-07-15 17:21 said: I AM SERIOUS! YOU COMMENT HERE, and YOU JEOPARDIZE YOUR VOTE! " And why did pat called this lady and not accepted rodrigov and others? Rodrigov is playing here for much more time! Toooo strange!!! maybe because pat knows he will follow the rules. Pat is not the owner of this game.. so.. i really want Hukes to say a world about this. I want Pat out as a mod. he can't be a mod here. He's SO impartial.. man, he took shots from rodrigov and jpinho WITHOUT an acceptable excuse to post his own shot. THis is not fair.. he'll do it with you, and you'll became very ungry! and i don't want to see you, a seriuos player, and a fantastic photographer, ungry as i and some others are. understood?

THen Rodrigov, jp and that lady offered to be mods.. the group wanted Rodrigov.. we know him from long time.. he's a pro.. and honest.. u can see the nice popdesign furious with Pat because he f**d with her.. and.. u'll see who has the reason here. and ask everybody (u have a list of the regulars @ /2late. that are not anymore u know now why..) how was the game before.. and now.. which do they prefer.. they will say for sure limone's time.. with no pat dong whatever he wants.. and no that lady.

I admit that, as a moderator, I have been quite absent of the 600s' issue. But I have already had several discussions about other issues with /credd (and one time with - yes! - patisfaction), giving opinions on them and what should be done.
About the banners' issue, IT IS A RULE AND SHOULD BE FOLLOWED AS SUCH. If one feels lazy about making and uploading banners, it should ask for other moderator to do such work.
Here I leave my personal contact for further discussions, including moderation discussions. If any mod ever need me to make and/or upload banners, do not hesitate in contacting me. MSN/e-mail: vitor.dias@terra.com.br

If you would ask me which time I preferred most I would say the early days of sequential_numbers, and I mean REALLY EARLY (no. 1-100). But nothing ever stays the way it is, neither the fotolog community not this group, and glorifying good old times is not really a solution. ;-)
I don't know why rodrigov was not accepted as moderator, in fact I'm not even sure if this was intentional.

Atenciosamente
rodrigov

Group.. this is the last time you'll see my words trying to protect the group (i never did it for me, as u can see i'm not participating since i won the 500 contest, because of abusive behavior from the mods). That lady-mod really showed she is learning with the president of her country, passing through democracy and the group rights. Now she threat me with the desativation of my fotolog. And stablished CENSORSHIP! Desautorized me to comment at the fotolog i have much more participation then her. Ok.. i accept her authority (that EVEN her don't know why she received. just like the president of her country).
So.. there's only one thing to do. i'll get out and never return.
But as the mods desautorized me to comment, I desauthorise this flog to keep my pictures in it archive
So, you, mods, have 48 hours to delete EACH picture sent by me. Delete them Immediately.
Thank you and good bye. and congrats to Pat.. he did all perfect and is the winner of the contest, finally... (will he really accept it?)

wow!!! pretty heated discussions going on in here!
i agreed to be a mod in the 400s...and i have seen a LOT of changes going on since then. as a mod...i tried taking my 'duties' seriously and would read thru the rules to assure i was being fair to all involved.
i just got back into town...and read thru all the discussions going on for the past week, and have to agree with a lot that was said.
my 'unsolicited' advice to the current (and future) modz...perform democratically. no 'one' person should make decisions for the group...that, after all, is a monarchy!
if there are ANY questions regarding the validity of a photo...put it to a vote...and follow the rules of the game. that is the only way this group can capture some of its integrity back!
maybe when i get a little more time...i'll be able to participate. until then...
ciao!
my 2 cents!

credd,
the problem is: getting majority votes and discussing everything with the community is VERY time consuming. I doubt there is anybody who can spend this much time on the flog. I notice that currently there are already impatient comments again why things are not moving forward, but mods have a job and a life like anybody else. When the log was new, the rules were very simple and there was only one mod, and this one mod was deleting off topics without asking because the rules were clear. Nobody ever doubted that. It is almost impossible to please everybody, there will always be one person complaining.
And about democratic performance: if 10 people gave comments on a pic, 6 said it's ok and 4 said it's not ok where do you draw the line? if you keep the pic because 6 people said it's ok will there be one who says "you should have asked 15 people instead of 10"?
Tough cookies and a VERY wide field... my opinion is that the whole game is still way too complicated to stay manageable with all the rules - I couldn't even say which pic is valid or not since I've lost track, esp. re. the limitations like max. number of license plates et al.

I don't endorse or authorize anybody to use my name in any sort of letter/manifesto/complain/protest against the moderators of Sequential Numbers group fotolog. If I eventually find out my name endorsing any sort of document without my previous authorization - for any reason - I'll consider it an abuse and report it to fotolog administration.

Hello Delina! One more time I would like to say that it was really good that you've accepted dimilinche's idea about this open discussion. It's good that we've started with the rules but you know that we had a moderators problem. You can't do the job alone and for us it seems that you are the only mod that seq#s has. I hope we can talk about that soon.

I didn't disagree about changing the modz from time to time. I disagree that the modz couldn't post. I think it would be to boring to be a mod and not be able to post. For me it doesn't matter if it's going to change each 100 or not, it matter that they have to be honest and fair!! But I defnitly think that we need more modz!!
What was decided about license plates? 3/10?

No one answer me at Seq_numb, so i'll try here.
Dear mods and Hukes, we all want a fair and enjoyable game, so some doubts could be cleared to me and the others users. I would like to know why Pat deleted the 470 and the last jpinho bus nº, why the mods told to /samaluca and /jvc to never appear or post here again and if this is right , why the mods asked the fotolog admins to deactivate /jpinho and why some comments posted here have been deleted without explanation.... i guess only after all these questions get clear the users of seq_numbs will feel comfortable and safe to play here.

/rodrigov, Your impatience with asking questions that require a lot of thought and most likely lengthy answers, and many of them is pretty clear. It is not that I didn't answer. It is that I didn't answer "yet". I just spent a long time answering the parts that I intend to answer. que discussão de baixo nível. o dono da foto tem razão e motivo para estar zangado com o rapazinho das sequências. e se perguntar não é acusar, aqui vai: senhora moderadora diga por favor - faz frequentemente jogo sujo neste flog? - não é uma pessoa íntegra? - consta que tem tendências e práticas pedófilas. é verdade? - não percebi bem, mas parece racista. é? etc etc etc

OK, we tried to do this once before and some of the suggestions made it into the rules. Other's didn't.
Unfortunately the rules as they are now are so confusingly written that it is clearly difficult for a new player to understand them. So, again I would like to propose a COMPLETE RE-WRITE of the rules to make them clear to understand. The idea is not to change any of the rules, just to write them out more clarly.
Proposed reworded Rules for sequential_nmbrs
The objective of this game is to FIND and PHOTOGRAPH unique numbers in the real world (not cyberspace) and post them here in sequential order. The competitive aspect of the game is to be the first person to post a particular number. If you are a new player you do not need to read the detailed rules but you must read the 6 simple rules below.
Summary rules 1) Numbers must be FOUND in the real world (not cyberspace), not created. 2) Numbers must be PHOTOGRAPHED by the entrant 3) The photograph must be clear and in FOCUS and you must be able to see the number in the thumbnail. 4) The entry must be a photo of ONE NUMBER 5) The number must be UNIQUE 6) In general players cannot post two numbers in a row
Detailed Rules: 1) Numbers must be FOUND (outside of cyberspace) a) No number that the photographer created to photograph is permitted. If it looks too much like it could have been created by the photographer we have to assume that it was, in particular this means no: i) Hand written (including graffiti) numbers unless it is otherwise clear from the context that they had to be pre-existing ii) Computer printouts and typed documents, unless it is otherwise clear from the context that they had to be pre-existing iii) Computer or Digital displays where the user can enter numbers (calculators, cell phones, microwave ovens, TVs etc) or otherwise control the number (e.g. by stopping a timer) b) Numbers must be presented as found.
Taking a picture of your monitor is not an acceptable way to avoid this rule. b) You can arrange for another fotologger to post an entry by proxy if you know you will be away, this must be announced by the poster in the photo description, for the purposes of rule 6 the posted number is treated as if it came from the entrant not the proxy poster.
3) The photograph must be in FOCUS a) Blurry, shakey or out of focus pictures are not acceptable, the number must be clear b) The subject number must be CLEARLY VISIBLE when the picture is reduced to fotolog thumbnail size (100 x 75 pixels). c) If a photograph is cropped to an unusual shape (i.e. not 3x5 aspect ratio) then the number must still be clear in the thumbnail for it to count.
4) The entry must be a photo of ONE NUMBER a) The number must stand alone in the picture and it must be evident from the composition that the number is the subject of the picture.
5) The number must be UNIQUE a) Once a number has been used from a source another number from that source is prohibited unless it is visually substantially different.
6) In order to make the game an appropriate level of difficulty some number sources are prohibited as being too easy: a) Numbers from books (page, chapter, figure numbers etc.) b) Numbers from maps c) Numbers from any numbered list (crossword clues, best of lists etc.)
7) In order to keep the game open to many players we limit the number of numbers a single player can post. a) No player can post two numbers in a row. b) No player can post more than 10 of the numbers in a block of 100 numbers (e.g. 100-200 etc). 8) In order to keep the game moving if 36 hours pass without a number being posted then anyone who is prohibited from posting a number by rule #6 can post.
9) When you see a number posted, you can post the next number, there is no need to wait for a banner or other notification
10) If the moderator must delete a number for a rules violation then that number and all of the subsequent numbers are deleted and the game starts over at the last valid number before the violation. Therefore be sure to watch the game in case you need to replay a number.
11) These rules have evolved over time and in the past some numbers may have been posted that no longer fit the current rules. Old numbers that exist outside of the current rules will be allowed to stand but they do not set a precedent for the future, all postings must adhere to the rules
12) The moderators will sometimes have to make judgement calls (e.g. if a picture looks too much like it may have been created). If you disagree you may post ONE polite and factual rebuttal to the moderators decision, any rudeness can result in banning from the game or complaints to the fotolog admin. It's just a game don't be a jerk.

Noted, 3 per person
What do we need to do to move forward on this, if that is in fact what we want to do. The mods have to buy off obviously and I guess we need someone to make a clear Portuguese version too.
The number of bad numbers it takes to get a good number I think means we need to fix the APPEARANCE and ORGANIZATION of the rules not make new rules.
