With Saddam Hussein caught, one question bothering many people is, who's next?

kEVIN,
I'm a former journalst, now teaching at the Univesrity of Las Vegas. May I have your permission to have my students study your blog- and comapre /contrast your role vis a vis the 'old school broadcast role'? This is just for classroom use.
Any hints you could give me to where your live report are logged would be grateful. I want them to lean how to write across all media - and your blog is one of the bext examples.

Please be assured any reference to you or your blog will be done in a school setting - for info purposes only. No ripping off your copy for a competitor. It's the clearest example I have to show them,of the convergence of media/ let ,me know if there's a problem/. PS. If you need an intern/associate - I'm there. Can fix broken tripods and am skilled at making remote sat shots work!

Thank you thank you thank you for this article. The picture where the soldier is guiding the blindfolded prisoner (the one with the gate in the way), that soldier is my husband Justin. He called me this morning and told me to look for the article and the pic, and I can't stop looking at it. This is the first time our daughter and I have "seen" him in 8 months. Bless everyone over there, and thanks again for a great story (and pictures!!!!). And if there's any way for me to buy a copy of this pic, please let me know!

Thank you for writing such an informative and responsible piece. It seems like the only thing presented by mainstream media is the sensational while the real story is in the everyday details of the work and lives of our soldiers and the Iraqi people, which I can only find out about via the internet. I am glad our soldiers are there working hard to bring freedom peace and security to a nation and a people who over the ages have given so much to humanity and have suffered so much inhumanity at the hands of that powermad psychotic murderer saddam. WMD's or not taking out saddam was absolutely the right thing to do. If it's not an ethical violation for you, please let our troops know and the Iraqi people that you interact with know that we are proud of them and praying for them. As for you, we are proud of you and pray for you also. Your work is so important. Keep on sending back the facts and keep your head down. God Speed.

Great pictures and story. I especially like the photo of the surface to air missles and your description of them being scattered across the desert like Pixie Stix...

It's good MSNBC has you there, sharing your perspectives. We've not been getting many details since the confict "ended" the day GWB landed so grandiosly on the aircraft carrier and declared himself the hero and victor.

Take care.

Thank you for the compelling coverage Kevin!

By the way, they aren't "240 barrel fed squad assault weapons." I think you may be referring to the M240 belt-fed machine gun, or the M249 squad assault weapon in belt-fed mode rather than magazine-fed. ( See http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/systems/ground/m240g.htm and http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/systems/ground/m249.htm respectively.) It would be pretty hard for any firearm to expell any projectile not in the barrel, so I think you meant to distinguish this as being a belt-fed weapon system rather than a magazine-fed rifle.

Distinguishing between the two is important for the story because the M240 isn't something these guys will run in shooting--they would set up somewhere outside to provide covering fire. The M249 is much smaller and is capable of being fired while standing, although in belt-fed mode this would be awkward.

I have a friend who's a combat engineer with the 299th, who says that if you want to send supplies, they like powdered Gatorade or other drink mixes, plus "pogie bait" -- trail mix, beef jerkey, dried fruit, things that you can carry in a pocket.

I'm really wondering if the Iraki would choose to go back with Saddam or prefer the yankee ?? But you're not in irak and you are not an Iraki so you don't have my answer, Kevin can , at leat ask the question for me.

hey pea, what makes you an authority on the subject?

are YOU a yankee embed? or are you just a cowardly little boy who didn't get to play with the other boys and their contact sports?

i like how he equates fox news to someone who is actually in iraq reporting what they see - what that tells me is that the mainstream media is indeed leftist and biased and that the truth is coming from fox news.

that is, if, pea knows something we don't. but of course he's not in iraq, he's just a jaded little boy.

I wonder how these soldiers feel about having to be gentle with people who moments previous wanted to see their blood spilled all over the landscape? Would they have gently laughed?
