Pinter the Pincer

Harold Pinter goes Doberman, using his Nobel speech to lacerate the US/UK foreign policy nightmare. Bless him.

No homecoming for Harold

An ill Pinter can't attend the Nobel ceremony, but will deliver the lecture in December.

Ex-gang leader, Nobel nominee set to be executed

Stanley Tookie Williams is sentenced to die December 13. He wants freedom pie for his last meal.

The Los Angeles County district attorney's office has nine days to file papers opposing clemency. Schwarzenegger can then schedule a hearing before the state Board of Prison Terms, which would recommend whether he should reduce Williams' sentence to life without the possibility of parole.

Schwarzenegger has denied both clemency applications he has considered, most recently that of Donald Beardslee of Redwood City, who was executed by lethal injection in January for the murders of two young women in 1981.

Doesn't look great, here.

I thought you could tell that Oryx and Crake wasn't really written from a scientifically educated perspective... and there's a personally unforgivable Asian-prostitute stereotype in there as well (she's done stereotyping, with Asians, before)... though the book does touch upon some good points and the male voice was completely convincing. Of course everyone has long lists of Who Should've Won the Nobel Instead... Atwood just isn't on mine, although I still read everything she puts out. Good for Pinter, though.

Harold Pinter, Nobel Laureate

I did not see that one coming, but there's a choice we can all be happy with. You know, except for those of us who aren't.

What's going on with the Nobel?

Intrigue! Shenanigans! One of the judges has resigned over the lit choice... from last year. Calling Elfriede Jelinek's work "a mass of text shovelled together without artistic structure", Knut Ahnlund stepped down this week in protest. That may be the case, from what I've read, but... um, way to jump right on that, Knutie. (Maybe he's also upset that this year's award isn't going to a Canadian. Or, maybe he's upset that it is...)

In Canada, indeed. What author comes to mind when reading this breaking science news? It's so Oryx and Crake. So relevant.

And speaking of awards

Are the Swedes at sixes and sevens over Orhan Pamuk? Dudes!? Forget that Turkey! Your next winner is in Canada!
