I have been a resident of this area (Page Ave/Estuary Ct) since 1978. All at the hand of City Counsel: I have seen the unabated encroachment of developers overtake the natural beauty of the beach front. I have seen developers profit from quick, substandard construction (in many cases) of condos (not well inspected by City inspectors, I might add), I have seen the allowed expansion without much consideration to the natural infrastructure... and now we are faced with more... and City Counsel has to deliberate on a purchase of open space??? Essentially, our taxes are facilitating this morphing of our community due to the failure of CC to hear and respect our collective voices! I think we should place an injunction against any further development by charging that the appropriate infrastructure to support the traffic patterns is not being considered. We should petition the Commonwealth and Federal government that this over-development is causing traffic safety hazards as far out as the 64-Northhamption Blvd North exit, as well as the Northhampton Blvd/Shore Drive East exit. If you consider population density and and the fact that commuter traffic is typically comprised of single drivers, addition of [estimate] 1500 units in the Shore Drive corridor would conceivably add 1500+ cars. When was the last time you were caught in the "driving rebellion" that occurs in these two areas due to drivers cutting in line. The engineering of road access should be the responsibility of the developers; couple it to the cost of developing the properties. We have TWO choke points for traffic engineering and no potential solution on the horizon. When it does come, it will be funded by tax dollars... herein lies the issue. Developers, at the hand of CC are permitted to over develop. They profit and walk away. We are left with traffic issues, not to mention destruction of natural resources, and will eventually have a tax base increase to pay for the reconfiguration of access due to over development... Get the point? Who knows a good lawyer and has a video camera to video document the morning and evening log jam (aka business commute). Can anyone chase down the metrics of accidents created due to traffic backing up on 64? CC has thumbed their nose at the residents (and Navy) on more than one occasion on develepment related issues. It is time we send a message and a) Stop them in their tracks , b) vote them out of office. Open to dialogue, Ken

Setting aside land for a natural park is a wonderful legacy to leave for all of those that love our city. It is one that cannot be measured in dollars and cents, but in the pleasure it will bring for years to come.

"Our community needs to be protected from over-development. Some open space needs o be preserved. Thanks for considering the future."

"do not make our neighborhood a crazy place, since the city boat ramp it is bad enough let our dogs play on the sand flats and children , why destroy what god gave us.katie"

"Thank you for all your efforts!"

"The Shore Drive area is approaching a point at which it is fully developed with very little open space.Do the right thing now, before it is too late."

"I support the Council's original idea to find a way to purchase at LEAST 25 acres, 39 would be better, for open space along Shore Drive."

"There is too much construction taken place and not enough green spaces. We want construction haulted before our city turns into an eye-sore like Ocean View was (before they started to clean it up!) Help to prevent our city from being a unappealing to all. Sincerely, Anne [xxxxx]"

"If we want to help keep the Lynnhaven River and Chesapeake Bay improving in quality, we need to keep as much open space as possible along the shoreline."

"Protect this land for the enjoyment and quality of life of our future generations."

"My wife and I "WOULD NOT OBJECT" to an increase in property taxes for this project. If the funds were used to purchase the mentioned property."

"Please, lets save our open spaces!"

"pls purchase 39 acres for preservation"

"VB City council urged to purchase Pleasure House Point"

"I would like to encourage the VA City Council to purchase the 39 acres. I makes me very angry and extremely sad to see every last bit of open space being taken away. And for what? What an ugly place this is becoming to live in. I'm sure you've heard the song "don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you've got till it's gone. Today's paridise, put up a parking lot." Please save our open space City Council. Our community and future community needs your help."

Yet more comments from the online Petition:

"Please help save the Open Space on Marlin Bay Drive."

"PLEASE, PLEASE no more condos on shore drive."

"I would like the entire parcel to be a park, but 25 acres is much better than none! There are too few preserved open spaces along Shore Drive and in NE Virginia Beach...and I say that knowing that First Landing State Park is nearby."

"Please save some open space, and stop the destruction of Shore Drive. Do we really need any more condo's on "Condo Alley." Let's stop Shore Drive from becoming the next Oceanview!!"

"The site is perfect for a passive recreational park. So many people live so close to the Lynnhaven waterway but don't have good access to it. Our City Council should realize when it's gone, it's gone. More private waterfront homes, it that really the highest and best use?"

"City Council--The value of our community will be dramatically improved by preserving and showcasing it's natural beauty. Please avoid the irreverisble damage that will be caused if this property is developed."

"The west side of Lessiner Bridge should never look like the east side[.]"

"Please consider- we need to preserve open space[.]"

[D]eveloping shore drive will eventually ruin our beaches and deminish our quality of life. The last thing we need on shore drive is more people and more traffic.

"If we don't save it now, it'll soon be too late for the beauty of nature to be preserved, sad thought..... however - it is NOT too late - to make difference....please purchase the land for nature, and not the almighty dollar!"

"I live in Mariner's Landing so this subject is very close to my heart. I pray that you will buy this land and preserve it. We truly don't need more housing here. Please have it in your hearts to do this for our community. Thank you and God Bless."

"Please lets stop this over growth on Shore Drive area. The traffic is becoming to the point many people who have lived here over 20 years want to move away. I am stunned by the number of awful condo's the city council has allowed in very small spaces. We need park land and places for the kids to play. Plus its seems that city council does not keep their promised about our Shore Drive community."

"A natural habitat park is a much needed addition to the large amounts of multi-family housing developments along the Shore dr corridor."

"We have been gifted in this area with one of the richest and most scenic natural habitats for wildlife on the entire Chesapeake Bay. Area reidents and tourist alike deserve continued or enhanced access to this asset. We have an obligation to God, man and nature to be good stewards with this world renown treasure. Fort Lauderdale does not become it."

"Please purchase the 25 acres for a natural park.Thank you."

"The Shore Drive corridor is being horribly overdeveloped. This property is in close proximity to the bay and additional development will certainly have negative environmental impacts on the bay and Lynnhaven River. Shore drive is the Gateway to Virginia Beach from the North. An ugly, overbuilt, crowded road will leave a negative impression on visitors."

"I am supporting efforts to limit development of the few remaining natural area in the Shore Drive area. Also I support efforts to preserve our natural resources and not let developers destroy all of our trees. This area is already loaded with high density development and traffic congestion."

"We are losing trees and open space too fastr. Pleasse make this purchase!!!!"

"I live on the east side of Lesner Bridge, recently dubbed Condo Canyon by the Pilot. Please remember that "smart development" must include patches of green along with the population dense areas. If you allow Shore Drive to lose the beachy village atmosphere we all enjoy, property values and the tax base will both decline. Bad for everyone!"

"I strongly encourage the purchase of this land so the citizens of Hampton Roads can enjoy the last of the natural beauty of this area. The greed of the developers and some of the corrupt politicians in Virginia Beach has destroyed this once lovely beach town. There's more to life than the "Tax Base"! Leave something for the future generations. McKlesky has enough money to last a thousand lifetimes !"

In the three years that my wife and I have lived in Ocean Park, I have seen what appears to be unchecked development - something is being crammed into every last inch of space everywhere I look every day. The look and feel of Ocean Park is what brought me here, and in three short years that look and feel has disappeared. The furious development I have witnessed will ultimately decrease the property values of this entire community, and will most certainly continue to destroy the integrity of this community. Virginia Beach doesn't need two Oceanfronts!

If we are to maintain our standard of life/living in this community, the city must balance green space w/ development. This is an excellent opportunity for balance. JTN

A thoughtful and sensible proposal that balances commercial/residential development and residential needs.

from the online Petition Comment Section:

"We are relatively new residents to the Ocean Park area. However, the congestion on Shore Drive with the current population loading is significant - more than we had in Northern Virginia. Adding significantly more people in this area will make it worse, and destroy one of the only natural scenes in the area. Please show us that the Council is not controlled by the developers. Many thanks for your consideration."
