The interesting thing to me about the concept of discourse is it reminds me how communication frames our concept of reality. It's another analytical tool for trying to understand culture, definetly not the only approach. You should definetly use a wholistic approach when trying to analyze something as undefinable as culture. But for me, I don't see it as a party trick.
