Maybe you missed what just happened in CA, but this is where moderates did indeed score a major political victory. The right wing extremists (anti-choice, anti-freedom, anti-anti-anti) had a candidate in Tom McClintock who only took 13% of the popular vote. The left wing extremists (anti-Iraq, national health care, living wage) had two candidates in Bustamante and Camejo, who got just over 30% of the vote.
The guy in the middle (pro-choice, revisit prop 13 and didn't pledge "no new taxes") won overwhelmingly. It wasn't even close.
Despite the plea from the right wing (Vote for Tom, or go to HELL!). Despite the pleas from the newspapers op-ed columns (Vote for Cruz!). Arnold won. And his transition team is a collection of all points of view. Not bad!
