We live and learn Duncan!
I launch at either Ventura/Oxnard and when next I'm at the submarine base (am still in the Navy) at Point Loma plan to take the boat with me and sail Mission Bay.
Today is a day off so plan to launch at Ventura and take my daughter with me - along with a 44 gallon drum of strawberry margarita! :-)
"Fair winds!"

Michael:

That is exacty what happened to me on the 2nd launch! I will try the knot and the different position. Earlier in a message I saw a warning about the rudder, almost did that also on the second launch. Lucky, I was backing up... out of Queensway in no wind.
Hope you will enjoy your boat. I am planning to wear mine out. I live 12 minutes from Queensway Launch. Duncan

Hello Duncan,
I'm still a rookie Potter 15 owner but have learned something new from each launching.
On my first two launches when I hoisted the main sail the topping lift line ended up on the wrong (starboard) side of the sail and prevented it from going all the way up - very inconvenient! I've found that looping this line around the boom just behind the vang is more convenient for me. This method still keeps the boom up/horizontal and is easier to get to and secure on the port side cleat after the main is hoisted.
Also, if you haven't already found out; make sure the rudder is ALL THE WAY DOWN and secured otherwise it may lift and hit the outboard prop when you go hard over to port.
I'm sure the more experienced Potters on board can provide the benefit of their experience.

Thank You: Both

I had a bit of a hassle with the TL single handing, because I did not remove it, hoping for an easier take down. I will try the knot idea next time!

I like Jonathans way, I frequently forget to take my topping lift off until I'm under sail and find it hampering things. It can be a pain to get off when single handing. The boat doesn't want to stay luffed up while you do it and if you reach out and grab the boom to pull it in to get at the clip you have basically trimmed the sail and away she goes.

I place a knot where the topping lift should be relative to the cleat for securing the boom. Then I add three turns around the cleat of length&#A0;to give the necessary slack for sailing, and secure at that length with hitches on the cleat. Then when through sailing I take my three turns around the base of the cleat which brings my knot back&#A0;to the cleat and is the correct length for furling the main. Advice request:

In sailing the P15. Do you leave your topping lift attached, or attached to the mast base while sailing?

Thanks

Beth and Mick.....Looking forward to meeting you guys at Mission Bay Yacht Club next weekend. Matt and I were at the club this afternoon and talked about next weekend, so keep looking at this message site for the latest information. There were a bunch of boats out in the bay today, they had Snipe and Santana-20 racing going on, besides the folks who just like to sail. I'll give you guys fair warning too.....this is a fun group and you'll likely get hooked!

Hey Denny are you out there??? Didn't you have the same problem with your prop? I thought I remembered you posting some pictures about it.

Hi all,

We are new Potter owners in San Diego and would like to meet all of you this coming weekend. Took the boat out today and weather was great. Had problems with our motor. Runs great at home but when on the bay the propeller is not engaging for some reason. We had to recently replace a pin and are wondering if perhaps we did not install that properly. Any ideas? MISSION BAY PLANS: We got some Good News for Mrs. Howie today, HOORAYYY.

She still has some healing up to do so we won’t be bringing a boat to San Diego. Instead we have reservations at the Bahia for Saturday night. We will drive down early on Saturday to be in town for breakfast and drive home Sunday afternoon. Looking forward to seeing everyone and really appreciate the efforts of Don & Matt for pulling this whole thing together.

Harry sent me a very interesting article that he wrote entitled " Winter Solstice Moon". The article describes how three couples, sailing Potters, enjoyed a moon lit sail some time ago.

I enjoyed reading it and I believe you will also!

Harry is a very talented writer, as well as an outstanding sailor!

It's going to take a mess of money to get this boat back in shape
