As I said in my original story, folks; it's clear that the GSM Association isn't revealing any more than it has to about this. But the Association has acknowledged that it's become an issue.
How big an issue, we can only judge if they share that data with us. So far, they've decided to keep coy. But I can understand how the delay between getting accepted as a revenue sharer and getting complaints from customers could be a very long one.

Thinking about this a bit more - you can't initiate a gprs session from the network anyway - the handset has to do it. So simply pinging the IP address of a phone wouldn't solicit a reply unless the phone was already in an active gprs session, and in that case the user is going to be looking at the phone anyway and controlling what it is doing.
Come on Guy, do some research on this and get back to us.

Can you be more specific about the method of 'attack'?
It seems to me that this is just a case of sending traffic to connected handsets in order to increase customer bills. If a trusted partner does this then the telco simply terminates their relationship with them. No respectable service provider would engage in such an activity as they risk ruining their reputation and business.
Most mobile operators employ network address translation on connections from the handset to the Internet. This prevents externally originated attacks.

How many operators offer revenue share of GRPS traffic ? Yes, the hacker could use this method (if it works) to stick charges onto the users' bills, but the hackers won't see any revenue from that.
