In Warren Ellis's science fiction graphic novel series, Transmetropolitan, Listeners are people who wander around all day wearing bulky camera gear, broadcasting whatever they see and getting paid for what's interesting, conducting interviews. Freelancers.
You wonder why the equipment is bulky - maybe mobile access coverage in the U.S. doesn't get any better in the indeterminate length of time between the present and when Transmetropolitan happens - and what proportion of interesting stuff happens on the street, anyway.
But amateur camcorder video on news bulletins is long since commonplace. Phone video is available now. Maybe if I actually watched television news more often - I tend to listen to BBC Radio 4, it makes violent stories less intense.
