Minutes from Meeting Tuesday April 28th

In attendance:
Rose Anna Wade (Watauga)
Christina Pennington (Ashe)
Amy Worley (Wilkes)
Karen Perry (Wilkes) - middle grades
Jill Docherty (Caldwell)
Tracie McLemore Salinas (ASU)
Debbie Crocker (ASU)

We welcomed our newest member, Jill Docherty, of Caldwell County. There was some discussion on the history of the group and its current work.
We looked at some of the potential new technologies for the group, including Ning, and discussed how we currently use technology in the group. We determined that we would like to merge the two QuickTopic groups into a single Math PLC and to continue using QuickTopic as the primary means of communication. We will experiment with others on the side for a while to see what possibilities seem to fit with our group's needs.
The group reconvened for supper and discussed planning for the upcoming year as well as new developments in Mathematics in NC (essential standards, etc.)

Please let me know if you would like a webcam before the summer. We will probably be using these next year for some of our PLC meetings so you might want to request one now so that you can practice with it.

If we will be using the webcams for PLC meetings, I will need one please. : )

Also, Linda will you please add the middle school PLC group to the high school math PLC quick topic group so that we get the notes etc . . . now that the groups have combined into one?

Thank you,
Loretta Thomas

Linda,

So sorry. I know it is probably too late. I was out of town yesterday without internet access.
The primary discussions focused on the Integrated Math Sequence. Several members brought the texts they use in class and Tracie Salinas brought examples of Integrated Math texts to the meeting. Discussions included whether the series was designed for upper or lower level students, the push for the series in some districts, and concerns over testing issues. A current graduate student in mathematics, Jennifer W., shared her personal experiences having been a student in an integrated math student. Amy Maxey, from West Forsyth High School, shared some information and take questions about Integrated Mathematics at our meeting on Tuesday, March 24 to a group of 10, 4 were guests from Watauga County schools and were not regular members. We looked at some of the potential new technologies for the group, including Ning, and discussed how we currently use technology in the group. We determined that we would like to merge the two QuickTopic groups into a single Math PLC and to continue using QuickTopic as the primary means of communication.
We did look at vertical alignment issues, as has been a common theme for the past few years. Additionally, we looked at the potential changes in the math education (9-12) curriculum at ASU and discussed those changes.
In general most meetings were attended by 6-10 people. With Ashe, Avery, Watuaga, Wilkes, and Burke counties being consistently represented. ASU was represented by Dr. Salinas and/or Dr. Crocker for all meetings.

This post may be of interest to you. Please contact Anita Kitchens for more info as we did not include the attachment

Dear Colleagues,

My name is Anita Kitchens and I am in the Department of Mathematical Sciences and the director of Math Camp at ASU. We have a Burroughs Wellcome grant that offers 12 students a very enriching experience in mathematics. We are trying to show students mathematics in more depth and encourage collaborative work with teachers from our MELT program (Mathematics Education Leadership Training).

Getting the word out is really the hardest part, it seems. What I am looking for are high school-age students (very mature and advanced late middle school may also work) who are willing to think mathematics. The dates are July 13-16, and then problem sets extend through the next year. The student is paid $500 for the effort. Also home-schooled students are most definitely encouraged to consider this opportunity (And if you are in the home-school circle could you please get the word out to others who home-school).

I am writing you because you may have faculty with children who may qualify and this is an excellent opportunity. You also may have students doing research who may have younger siblings who may be interested. Attached is a flier with more info. For questions you may reply to me with this email or write to jonesd@appstate who is co-director.

Thanks for your help in getting the word out.
AK
